Carlos McGuire
Carlos Odell McGuire, 43, of 204 Florida Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
born in West Virginia, he was a son of Verna Lee McGuire and the late Leonard Algie McGuire. He was formerly employed by Quality Chrysler and Ace Tree Service.
Survivors include his mother of the home; two sons, Christopher Shawn McGuire and Casey Wayne McGuire, both of the home; four sisters, Delores Martin, Shirley Whitmire and Kathy McGuire, all of West Virginia and Connie McGuire of the home; three brothers, William McGuire of Hodges, Rodney McGuire and Robert McGuire, both of West Virginia; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. today at Oakbrook Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. James Young.
The family is at the home of his brother, William McGuire, 130 Pineridge Drive, Lot 10, Hodges.

Susan Bailey Powell
MCCORMICK – Susan Bailey Powell, 82, of Rt. 1 McCormick died Thursday, December 16, 2004 at the Hospice House of the Upstate. She was first married
to the late Clyde L. Faggart and then to the late Rufus B. Powell. Mrs. Powell was born in Elberton, GA to the late Dr. D.V. and Susan Mildred Stephens Bailey.
Being very active was something Mrs. Powell enjoyed; she was an active member of the McCormick United Methodist Church, a member and volunteer to many organizations such as the Eastern Star, John De La Howe School, American Red Cross, Hospice of the Piedmont, and the McCormick County Health Department.
Surviving Mrs. Powell is her son, Robert “Bob” Faggart of Abbeville, and a step-son, Mike Powell of Abbeville, a daughter, Susan F. Long of Anderson and a step-daughter, Patsy Thomason of Abbeville, a brother, Col. Jack S. Bailey, Ret. of Augusta, GA, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 2:00PM Sunday, December 26, 2004 at the McCormick United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service.

Edith Theresa Metze Smathers, 76, of 105 Biltmore St., widow of Frank Edward Smathers, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
born in White Rock, she was a daughter of the late Seber and Eula Eleazer Metze. She was a retired seamstress with Colson Manufacturing.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen S. Landers of Greenwood; four sons, Lonnie Smathers, Jerry Smathers, Kenny Smathers and George Smathers, all of Greenwood; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. today at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Randy Ouzts and Richard Saxon. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is 10-11 today at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of Jerry and Debbie Smathers, 114 Valley Road in Spring Valley.

Jesse F. Bolden Sr.
Jesse F. Bolden Sr., 76, of 105 Campbell Ave., husband of Essie Mae Minyard Bolden, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Johnnie and Annie Baylor Bolden. He was a machine operator with Greenwood Mills and a member of Marshall Chapel Baptist Church and Walker Chapel Community Club.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jessie Bolden Jr. and Kirk L. Bolden, both of Greenwood; two daughters, Mrs. Ervin (Mattie M.) Andrews of Fountain Inn and Lillie R. Bolden of Greenwood; two sisters, Mamie Creswell and Mrs. David (Lillie M.) Jones, both of Greenwood; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Lewis Hudson
Greenwood – Lewis Hudson, 78, formerly of 405 E. Henrietta Avenue, widower of Mary Gambrell Hudson, died Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at the Anderson Area Medical Center.
born in Hodges, he was a son of the late Joe Lee and Mary Gaddis Hudson. He was the retired owner of Hudson’s Barber Shop of Cambridge Avenue and was a US Army veteran of World War II. He was a member and past commander of V.F.W. Post 8131 and was a member of Providence Baptist Church, where he was recognized as the member with the longest membership.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Whitaker.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mike (Eleanor) Rhodes of Hodges and Mrs. Ben (Donna) Parham of Greenwood; two sons, Vernon “Bud” Hudson of Snellville, GA and Doug R. Hudson and his wife, Lisa, of Hodges; two sisters, Mayme Holland of Ware Shoals and Dorothy Hodges of Hodges and five grandchildren, Angela H. Watson, Andrew Rhodes, Samantha Hudson, Amanda Hudson and Jeffrey Parham.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Todd Johnson and Mr. Justin Stanley officiating.
Honorary escort will be Rudolph Price, Benny Stevens, Wayne Wilson and Wayne Still.
The family will receive friends at Harley Funeral Home on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

CAMDEN, SC — A memorial service for John Clinton Shell Jr., 87, will be held on Sunday, December 26, 2004 at 4:00 PM in St. Paul United Methodist Church in Ninety Six. John Clinton Shell Jr., of Camden, SC, and formerly of Ninety Six, SC, died on Tuesday, December 21, 2004. He was the husband of Louanne Marshall Shell, to whom he was married
for 54 years.
born in Laurens, SC, on March 12, 1917, Mr. Shell was a son of the late John Clinton Shell Sr., and Margaret Miller Shell. A 1938 honor graduate of Clemson A&M College, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the prestigious Legion of Merit Medal for his work in the Armed Forces Induction Service. He completed his active duty with the rank of Major.
Mr. Shell was a retired Plant Superintendent for Uniroyal, Inc. in Winnsboro, SC and Shelbyville, TN. He served on the Advisory Board of the Greenwood Salvation Army for approximately 15 years and was named a Life Member in April 2001. A Lions Club member for over 30 years, Mr. Shell served on the Board of Directors of the Ninety Six Lions Club, received its 1987 Man of the Year Award, and was named a Melvin Jones Fellow in May, 2001. He was active in United Way Campaigns, the Meals on Wheels program, the HOST program at Ninety Six Elementary School, and served on the Board of Directors of Elmwood cemetery Association. He also served on the Ninety Six Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and was its President in 1988-1989. While on the Chamber board, he designed the “Welcome to Ninety Six” sign and the 1996 commemorative automobile plate.
Most recently a member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church in Camden, Mr. Shell had been an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Ninety Six, where he served on the Administrative Board, the Council on Ministries, and the Finance Committee. He served as President of the Men’s Club, delegate to the Annual Conference, Lay Leader, Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Jeffcoat Bible Class and the church choir.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his son and daughter-in-law, Virginia (Jensy) Marshall Shell Reda and Daniel Reda of Adairsville, Ga.; two grandchildren, Catherine Collier Shell and John Clinton Shell IV of Camden; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Richard G. Shell of Laurens; nieces and nephews. Mr. Shell was predeceased by his brother, Richard Griffin Shell of Laurens in 2000.

DUE WEST — Eddie Gordon, 85, of 24 Johnson St., widower of Margaret Gordon, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004 at Beauford Memorial Hospital in Beauford.
He was a son of the late George and Marie Gordon.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Gloria) Anderson of Memphis, Tenn.; and Mrs. Shahid (Chanel) Belcher of Beaufort; two sisters, Edith Cunningham and Dorothy Gordon, both of Albany, N.Y.; and a brother, John Gordon of New York.

ABBEVILLE — Baby Boy Gray, infant son of Marodika Gray and Thomas Ford, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Survivors include his parents; maternal grandparents, Doris Starks and Effson Bryant Jr.; and paternal grandparents, Johnnie Mae Ford and Thomas Lee Tatum.
Services are 10 a.m. today at Abbeville & White Mortuary, conducted by Elder O.A. Klugh, assisted by the Rev. Darran Jones. Burial is in St. Paul A.M.E. Church cemetery.

BRADLEY — Claude Wideman, 50, of 5305 Highway 221 S., husband of Renate Wideman, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004 at his home.
He served in the Army and worked as a landscaper after his tour of duty in Germany.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Claude Wideman Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C.; a daughter, Tecoya Wideman of Germany; his mother, Mary Frances Wideman of Bradley; a sister, Sarah A. Wideman of Greenwood; five brothers, Calvin P. Wideman and Robert E. Wideman, both of Fayetteville, Joseph Wideman of Hodges, John Thomas Wideman of Bradley and James McArthur Wideman of Washington, D.C.

Rachel Byers, 81, of 422 Marion Avenue, died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at 12:14 a.m. at Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden.
Daughter of the late Wright Byers, Sr. and the late Rachel Baxter Byers, she was a native of Cherokee County. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Limestone Manufacturing Company.
She is survived by one son, Robert Lee Byers of Gaffney; two sisters, Ms. Idella Byers and Mrs. Vernell Dawkins of Baltimore, Md.; seven grandchildren, Larry Byers of Gastonia, N.C. and reared in the home, Douglas C. Byers and James Bernard Byers of the home, Mrs. Donna Ree Crosby and Ms. Claudette Byers both of Gaffney, Victor Cauldwell Byers and Ms. Angela Nicole Curry of Gastonia; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr., Dr. Michael Birdges, the Reverend Lawrence Davidson and the Reverend Pittman Harris officiating.
Internment will follow in Oakland cemetery.
She will lie instate at Bethel Baptist Church on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
