Former employee of Hamrick's
Brenda Steadman Ballenger, 55, of 622 Edgewater Drive, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare.
A native of Gaffney, she was the wife of Mike Ballenger and daughter of Marjorie Robbs Steadman and the late Bill Steadman. She was a former employee of Hamrick's and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Also surviving are a son, Michael Ballenger Jr. of Gaffney; a daughter, Crystal Ballenger of the home; and three sisters, Marjorie Ann Lambright, Lynn Hill and Gwen Sanders, all of Gaffney.
Arrangements are incomplete. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge.
Anna E. McCraw
Retired from Fiber Ind.
Anna Sue Elmore McCraw, 81, of 708 Union St., died today, Monday, June 14, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare.
A native of Gaffney, she was the widow of Morgan McCraw Sr. and daughter of the late Albert D. Elmore and the late Annie Laurie Alexander Elmore. She was retired from Fiber Industries and was a member of Grassy Pond Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Laura Keller of Gaffney, Anna Lisa McCraw of Belmont, N.C., and Susan Ulmer and her husband, Chris, of Columbia; a son, Morgan McCraw Jr. of Gaffney; a sister, Mary Smith of Lenoir, N.C.; and two grandsons, Taylor Kite and his wife, Terri, and Bryan Kite.
The family is at the residence.

J. Buford Painter
Farmer who loved the land
CHESNEE – James Buford Painter, 82, formerly of Chesnee, died Thursday, June10, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Spartanburg County, he was the widower of Myrtle Smith Painter and son of the late James Willie and Clara Willingham Painter. He was a member of Arrowwood Baptist Church, where was a former deacon. He was a farmer who truly loved the land. He was very proud of the produce that he raised and loved sharing it with his friends and neighbors.
Surviving are a daughter, Ann Painter James of Chesnee; one granddaughter; and three brothers, Howard Painter, Gene Painter and John Ed Painter, all of Chesnee.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Arrowwood Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. James Crocker and Fae Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disaster Relief Chainsaw Unit, Arrowwood Baptist Church, 1410 Hwy. 11, Chesnee, S.C. 29323.

Alonso Weaver
Alonso Lamar Weaver, 25, of 1506 Williamson Road, Kingstown, N.C., died Friday, June 11, 2004, at 5:45 p.m. in Columbia Care Center, Columbia.
Son of Bernard F. Weaver and Dianne Johnson Weaver, he was a native of Cleveland County, N.C., and 1998 graduate of Burns High School.
Also surviving are a son, Alonso Lamar Weaver Jr. of Shelby; four brothers, Jonathan T. Johnson of Kingstown, Rodney D. Johnson of Cherryville, Bernard A. Weaver of Shelby and Avis M. Weaver of Charlotte; grandparents, John Johnson of Shelby and Earlene Weaver of Kingstown; and great-grandmother, Mattie Elder of Kingstown.

W. Jimmy Martin
Gaffney City Councilman
W. Jimmy Martin Sr., 71, died Thursday evening, June 10, 2004, at his home after a brief illness.
Mr. Martin was a native of Pacolet and had lived most of his life in Gaffney. He was the son of the late Lee and Zelma Martin of Pacolet and was the widower of Louisa Wilson Martin.
Mr. Martin attended schools in Pacolet. After school, he was a corporal in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at Fort Jackson in Columbia. He was a retired car salesman. He began his career as partner in Jimmy and Wades Used Cars in Gaffney and then worked with Stephenson Ford in Gaffney and Ronnie Burns Ford in Chesnee.
He was a sitting member of the Gaffney City Council and served for almost 16 years. He had served as Gaffney's Mayor Pro Tem several terms and was president of the Gaffney Development Corporation.
Mr. Martin was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, a Mason, a member of the Gaffney Rotary Club, a member of the Gaffney B.P.O.E. Elks, a member of American Legion Post 109, a charter member of the Gaffney Sertoma Club and was a strong supporter and advocate of the Cherokee County Services to the Aging.
Surviving are a son-in-law and daughter, Charlie and Judy Martin Robinson of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Joanie Martin and David and Vickie Martin of Gaffney; four grandchildren, Brady Martin of Nashville, Tenn., John David Harris and Will Martin of Gaffney and Stephanie Harris of Clemson; two step-grandsons and their wives, SFC Robert and Samantha Kerns and Brian and Jennifer Kerns of Sanford, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Austin Kerns and Jordan Kerns of Sanford, N.C.
Mr. Martin was also preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn June Martin, of Gaffney and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Services will be held Saturday at Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Stuart Kersey, Dr. J.W. Sanders and Dr. Clyde Thomas. His body will lie in state for viewing at the church from 5:30-6:45 p.m. The celebration of his life will begin at 7 p.m. and the family will receive friends and host a reception immediately following the service in the Family Life Center at Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church. His burial will be private.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Lamar Hammett, Rodney Burns, Louis Sossamon, Jack Millwood, Mandret Wilkins, Joe Martin, Carl Robinson, Lucius Whittenburg and Bill Bramlett. There will be a seating of honor for the Gaffney City Council, Cherokee County Council and the employees of the City of Gaffney.
Memorials may be made to the Louisa W. Martin Nursing Scholarship or a charity of one's choice.

Edith M. Banks
Preschool teacher at Piedmont Community Actions
Edith Elizabeth McMurray Banks, 54, of 209 Eden Drive, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Gaffney, she was the wife of Stephen Joel Banks and daughter of Pearl Mae Blanton McMurray of Gaffney and the late Henry Lewis McMurray. She was a preschool teacher at Piedmont Community Actions-Head Start and a member of Berry Memorial Baptist Church. She was a loving Mama and Grandmother.
Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two daughters, Paula Marie Banks and Buffy Renea Banks, both of Gaffney; two sisters, Edna Stallard of Waterloo and Hazel Humphries of Gaffney; four brothers, Winfred McMurray, Henry McMurray, James Lynn McMurray and Billy McMurray, all of Gaffney; and two grandchildren, Devon Ray McAbee and Harley Madyson McAbee.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert Ivey. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Brian Keith Sullivan, Jackie Banks, Jamie Banks, Dennis Hamm, David Hamm and Drew Allen.
The family is at the home.

Mabel H. Carter

Mabel Louise Harris Carter, 93, of 4606 Union Hwy., died Thursday, June 10, 2004, in Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.
A native of Harris, N.C., she was the widow of Virgil E. Carter and daughter of the late William Gamble Harris and the late Epsie Lattimore Harris. She was a homemaker and member of Buford Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Robert L. Carter of Greenville; four daughters, Jean Carter Raborn of Charlotte, Mary Carter McCraw of Spartanburg, Margaret Carter Rossa of Englewood, Fla., and Susan Carter McFadden of Fort Lawn; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Buford Street United Methodist Church, 120 E. Buford St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340; or to the charity of one's choice.

Edley R. Millwood
Cherokee County native
BLACKSBURG – Edley "Eddie" Ray Millwood, 58, formerly of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Ernest Junior and Carrie Mae Hamrick Millwood.
Surviving are a daughter, Angela Kay Fields of Belmont, N.C.; four sisters, Louise M. Vandier of Spartanburg, Betty Millwood of Shelby, Louzalia "Pee Wee" Radica of Grover and Mary M. Davis of Bessemer City, N.C.; a brother, Billy Hamrick of Charlotte; and four grandchildren.
Cryptside services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Clingman Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Richard Moorhead, Patrick Moorhead, Scott Patterson, Mike Patterson, Chris Cobb and Milton Carlton.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at the funeral home and at other times they will be at the Radica residence, 142 Hicks Road, Grover.

James E. Wood
Mechanic
James Edward Wood, 64, of White Oak Apartments, Apt. 9, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at his home.
Son of Rosa Lee Wood Smith of Gaffney and Charles Hollis Sr. of Gaffney, he was a native of Cherokee County and a member of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. He was reared by his grandparents, the late Baxter and Vennie P. Wood. For 30 years, he worked as a mechanic. Returning to Gaffney 11 years ago, he was employed by Johnny Little Service Station as a mechanic.
Also surviving are two daughters, Minnie Lowery and Karen Pailin of Baltimore, Md.; a son, Derrick Johnson of Baltimore; two sisters, Ruthie Rodgers and Nancy Knuckles of Gaffney; and two brothers, Lindsey Smith and Fred Smith of Gaffney.
Service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Grady Hollis, Louis Lockhart, Terry Wood, James Hollis, Clinton E. Manning, Junior Kirby, Dean Allen and Herman D. Wood.
Flower bearers will be Priscilla H. Lockhart, Tuesday Fearn, Lois S. Wood, Margaret Hollis, Nina Robinson, Nellie J. Smith and Thomasina Smith.
The family is at the home of his aunt, Lillia W. Manning, 118 Connecticut Ave.

Mahala J. James
Cherokee County native
CHESTER – Services for Mahala Jordan James, 80, of 168 Center St., will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Metropolitan AME Zion Church, conducted by the Revs. Sharon B. Jenkins, Carl A. Glen and Eldren Morrison.
Mrs. James died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Chester County Hospital. A native of Cherokee County, she was born Feb. 7, 1924, to the late Arthur Jordan Sr. and Mahala Dawkins Jordan. She was a 1945 graduate of S.C. State University and was also a graduate of Granard High School. She was a member of Metropolitan AME Zion Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Louis James Jr.; a brother, Arthur Jordan Jr.; and two sisters, Wynters H. Sesley and Elizabeth Davidson.
Surviving are her husband, Eddie Louis James Sr.; two sons, Robert Kenneth James Sr. and Thomas Benny James Sr., both of Chester; a granddaughter; a grandson reared in the home, Robert Kenneth James Jr. of Rota, Spain; and three others grandsons.
The family will receive friends at the residence in Chester.
Memorials may be made to the Metropolitan AME Zion Church Building Fund, 182 York St., Chester.
The body may be viewed from 3-9 p.m. Saturday and will lie in state at 2 p.m. until the hour of service.
