He attended both Venice and Santa Monica High Schools, graduating in 1951 from “Samo High.” He joined the United States Air Force in 1952 during the Korean Conflict and completed his tour of duty at Shaw AFB, near Sumter. Trained as a violinist, his teacher at Peabody persuaded him to change to viola, and he soon became first-chair member of the school orchestra. In 1960, Jake brought Vernon to California, and began working for the Hueneme School District, a position he held for 33 years. During his tenure at Hueneme, he became a Fulbright Scholar, obtaining a teacher exchange position with Dumfries School District in Dumfriesshrie, Scotland. The family traveled to Scotland with Jake and lived in Lockerbie, Scotland from 1976 to 1977. During this time he played violin with the Strathspray Fiddle and Reel Society. While living in Scotland, he discovered he had relatives in Lisbon, Portugal and in 1989, he and Vernon visited them. Jacob was a charter member of the Ventura County Symphony Orchestra, playing under the baton of the late Frank Salazar. When on Sabbatical (1969-1970) at George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn., he played viola with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra under Thor Johnson. In recent years, he has played with the Long Bay Symphony of Myrtle Beach, under the direction of Charles Jones Evans.
