ALCOLU — Bertha “Sue” Harrison Hickman Jones, 81, died Sunday, July 28, 2002.
Born June 11, 1921, in Alcolu, Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Harrison and Mary Vertell Tomlin Harrison. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Little Mt. Zion Church in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1994, she returned home and joined Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, where she attended regularly until the time of her illness. She retired from Danilow Pastry Inc. of Brooklyn.
She was first married to the late James Hickman and later married to the late Isaiah Jones.
Survivors include a daughter, Celestine Myers of Alcolu; a niece raised as a daughter, Shirley Evins and her husband, Deacon Hazel Evins, of Alcolu; a brother, Robert Harrison and his wife, Mary, of Hamden, Conn.; two sisters, Mattie T. Evans and Louise Singleton and her husband, Bill, both of Alcolu; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. Dennis Brock, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Thursday.
Men of the church will serve as pallbearers.
Ladies of the church will serve as floral bearers.
The family will receive friends at the home of her niece and husband, Shirley Taylor Evins and Deacon Hazel Evins, 5782 Brogdon Road, Alcolu.

John H. “Jack” McDaniel, 77, widower of Annie Mae Myers McDaniel, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at his home.
Born Oct. 21, 1924, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Marcus Spann and Annie McDaniel. In his youth, he joined Barnettsville Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member. He attended Lee County public schools and served his community through leadership work in various organizations.
Survivors include four sons, John Herman McDaniel and Edward McDaniel, both of Sumter, James Colel McDaniel of Fairburn, Ga., and Elijah Anthony McDaniel of Woodrow; three daughters, Loretta Myers Wilson of Paris, France, Ella Denise Graham of Dalzell and Johnnie Mae McDaniel of the home; a brother, James Buster McDaniel of Baltimore; four sisters, Algie Mae Myers and Rosa Lee Spann, both of New Jersey, Emma Mickens of Dalzell and Ella Mae Mark of Woodrow; a very special aunt, Emma McDaniel of Sumter; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Barnettsville Baptist Church, Bishopville, with the Rev. Wayne Montgomery, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday. The funeral procession will leave at 10:20 a.m. from the home, 20 Victor Drive.
Trustees, grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Veneda P. Sutton, 83, widow of Heyward S. Sutton, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Poplar Bluff, Mo., she was a daughter of the late Jess Franklin Preast and Grace Irene Dean Preast. She was a member of Lemira Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a son, Larry A. Sutton of Sumter; a daughter, Patricia A. Livingston of El Paso, Texas; six sisters, Lillie Hill of Bishopville, Claire Junkin of Myrtle Beach, and Helen Austin, Minnie Bolyn, Jessie Lucas and Shirley Mathis, all of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace LaNell.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Eller and the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

SYLACAUGA, Ala. — Lena Mae Dates Calhoun, 82, widow of Payton Funderburg and Charlie Calhoun, died Sunday, July 28, 2002.
Born Sept. 22, 1919, in Talladega County, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Dovie Lee Dates and Eli Garrett. She was a faithful member of Tallassahatchie Missionary Baptist Church, Childersburg, Ala.
Survivors include three sons, James Dates of Childersburg, and Lee Edward Dates and Clarence Dates and his wife, Gracie, both of Columbus, Ga.; two daughters, Christine Nettles and her husband, George, of Childersburg and Annie Brock and her husband, Nate, of Sumter; a brother, R.T. Dates of Childersburg; a sister, Annie Evans of Childersburg; 27 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews, nieces and cousins.
She was preceded in death by two sons, J.T. Funderburg and Walter Dates.

WEDGEFIELD — Jean Elizabeth Hughes Dixon, 70, wife of William Lonnie Dixon, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at her home.
Born in Cope, she was a daughter of the late George T. Hughes and Emma Agnes Antley Hughes. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Survivors besides her husband of 51 years of Wedgefield include two sons, Stephen Barry Dixon of Irmo and George Michael Dixon of Seneca; three daughters, Janet Marie Dixon of Seneca, Judith Amy Smith of York and Margaret Anita Marsh of Hendersonville, N.C.; two sisters, Margaret Truette Felder of Bowman and Jacquelin Louise Moyer of Orangeburg; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sumter Cemetery with the Revs. Louis Jameson and Bill Rogers officiating.

WEDGEFIELD — Harvey Lee Green Sr., 85, husband of Ethel Richardson Green, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center.
Born Dec. 7, 1916, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Henry and Mary James Green. He attended Sumter County public schools. He was a member of Wayman Chapel AME Church. He was a civil service employee at Shaw Air Force Base for a number of years and was a progressive farmer. He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors besides his wife of 56 years include three sons, Julius Green and his wife, Shirley, and Harvey Lee Green Jr. and his wife, Susie, both of Sumter, and Raymond Green and his wife, Diane, of Philadelphia; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Wayman Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Laddie N. Howard, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. F.K. Richardson, John Platt and Charlie Howard. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

SUMMERTON — Mary Eliza Smith Holland, 95, widow of Clurel Holland, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born April 28, 1907, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Minnie Brunson Smith. She attended Clarendon County public schools and also attended a dress-making school in New York. She lived in Bronx, N.Y., for a number of years and was employed as a seamstress. In her youth, she joined Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, and upon her return from Bronx, she served as a missionary until the time of her illness.
Survivors include a brother, Frances Smith of Houston; and a special niece, Thomasine Gibson of Summerton.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at noon today at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m.

Clarence Wood Ives, 71, husband of Betty Neil Nichols Ives, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia.
Born in Ottumwa, Iowa, he was a son of the late Wayne W. Ives and Opal Downy Ives. He was a retired truck driver with A-1 Mobile Storage Company and a U.S. Air Force Korean veteran.
Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Bobby R. Ives and Edward C. Ives Sr., both of Sumter; a daughter, Elizabeth Ives Browder of Sumter; two brothers, Wendel Ives of Long Beach, Calif., and Edward Ives of Olympia, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. G.W. Harrell and Larry Melton officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bertis Vinson Long, 83, widower of Maxine Hodge Long, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at his home in Sumter.
Born June 29, 1919, in Harrisburg, Ill., he was a son of the late Oscar Eugene and Marie Vinson Long. He was a member of Jordan United Methodist Church. He was a World War II Army veteran and a Mason.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Long Blackmon and her husband, Jerry F., and Marilyn Long Warren and her husband, Thomas Kenneth, all of Sumter; a sister, Margaret Long Howard of Richmond, Ky.; two grandsons, Thomas Kenneth Warren Jr. and Michael Vinson Warren, both of Sumter; and three granddaughters, Kerri Blackmon, Sherri B. Dagesse and her husband, Corey, and Codi Warren, all of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Oscar Eugene Long and Edward Dale Long; and two sisters, Mittie Ruth Asherbranner and Barbara Nell Ranz.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. George Gain officiating. Burial will be in Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery.

Born April 8, 1935, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Lincoln and Edna Peterson. He attended Martintown Elementary School and was a 1955 graduate of Lincoln High School.
Survivors besides his wife include five daughters, Deborah B. Williams, Deirdra Mayers and her husband, Dwayne, and Carolyn Peterson, all of Roselle N.J., Gwendolyn Porter and her husband, Charles, of Irvington, N.J., and Catherine Branch of Linden, N.J.; and four grandchildren.
