BARNWELL — Peter Coutrier Jr., 63, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Barnwell County Hospital.
Born Oct. 9, 1938, in Charleston, he was a son of Inez Brown Coutrier and the late Peter Coutrier Sr. He attended New York City public schools. In 1993, he retired as a master fabric cutter and relocated to Williston.
Survivors besides his mother include a son, Peter Coutrier III and his wife, Alexandria, of Coram, N.Y.; two daughters, Helena Teresa Young and her husband, Charles, of East Orange, N.J., and Petrea Ellen Coutrier of Williston; three brothers, Rubin Brown of New York City, Melvin Coutrier and his wife, Marion, of Charleston and Nathan Coutrier of Summerton; two sisters, Christine Washington and her husband, Julius, and Nancy Goodwin and her husband, Leonard, both of Goose Creek; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Matthew Coutrier; and two sisters, Bebe Porter and Edna Mae Coutrier-Davis.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hayes Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with Albert Thompson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. James AME Church in the Potato Creek section of Summerton.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 1103 Blaney Road, Camp Bob Cooper community of Summerton.

LAKE CITY — Joel B. Floyd, 53, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Lonnie Bethea Floyd and Ruth Carolyn “Jolene” Calcutt Floyd. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Law. He was affiliated with Folkens Law Firm and was a member of the South Carolina Bar Association. He attended Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include a son, Joel Bethea Floyd Jr. of Lancaster; a daughter, JoAnna Lynn Floyd of Lancaster; a brother, Michael V. Floyd of Lake City; a sister, Mary Beth Lee of Lake City; a special friend, Elaine Huggins; four nephews; and a great-niece.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, April Tiffany Floyd.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Eva Loutitia Shorter McGee, 95, widow of Horace Dupree McGee, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Davis Station, she was a daughter of the late Julius Allen Shorter and Margaret Elizabeth Shorter. She was a member of Harmony Church.
Survivors include two sons, Herbert D. McGee and Cody R. McGee, both of Sumter; four daughters, Dorine M. Sievers, Helen M. Polito, Marguerite M. Coward and Betty M. Willette, all of Sumter; a sister, Bardie Cross of Atlanta; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lewis N. McGee; two brothers, Cole Blease Shorter and Julius Allen Shorter Jr.; two sisters, Lorena E. Felder and Flaga A. Shorter; and a grandson, Robert Michael Willette.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Drew Choate and Billy Williams officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Veneda P. Sutton, 83, widow of Heyward S. Sutton, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Poplar Bluff, Mo., she was a daughter of the late Jess Franklin Preast and Grace Irene Dean Preast. She was a member of Lemira Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a son, Larry A. Sutton of Sumter; a daughter, Patricia A. Livingston of El Paso, Texas; six sisters, Lillie Hill of Bishopville, Claire Junkin of Myrtle Beach, Helen Austin, Minnie Bolyn, Jessie Lucas and Shirley Mathis, all of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace LaNell; a brother, Lawrence Preast; and two sisters, Louise Haley and LaVern DuBose.

BALTIMORE — Walter “Buster” Jefferson Thomas, 92, husband of Ruby Cox Thomas, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, in a Baltimore hospital.
He was born in Lynchburg. He attended Lynchburg public schools. In his youth, he moved to Baltimore and remained there until his death. He and his late cousin, Clifton Jefferson, were raised together as brothers by their grandparents, the late Johnny and Carrie Jefferson. He was an entrepreneur in Baltimore.
Survivors besides his wife include a son, Walter Smith of Baltimore; two brothers, David Cook of Florence and Jeffery Thomas of New York City; and two sisters, Helen Harrison of Florence and Laureen Duren of Lynchburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Metropolitan United Methodist Church, 1121 Lanvole St., Baltimore. Burial will be in a Baltimore cemetery.

Deacon Ishmel Jackson Sr., 89, widower of Delphine Carroll Jackson, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Mariner Health Care of Sumter East.
Born July 10, 1913, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Charlie Jackson and Mattie Josey Jackson. He was raised in the Dalzell area of Sumter County. He became a Christian at an early age and joined the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church USA, where he served with the men’s council and deacon board.
Survivors include two sons, Paul Jackson and Richard Jackson, both of Dalzell; a daughter, Susan Brailsford of Dalzell; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Ishmel Jackson Jr. and McKinley Carroll; and a daughter, Geneva Scriven.
A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church USA, Dalzell, with the Rev. Dr. Franklin D. Colclough, moderator, officiating, assisted by Dr. James Jackson and the Rev. Ernest Jackson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

GREENVILLE — Willie Carl “Wild Bill” Palmer, 50, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital.
Born April 10, 1952, in the North Santee section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Seward “Bo” Palmer Jr. and Eliza “Tee” Robinson Palmer Bennett. He was the stepson of the late Frazier Channie Bennett. He was educated at St. Paul Elementary School and Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton and was employed at Sanitary Plumbing Contractors.
Survivors include a son, Willie Carl Palmer Jr. of Gray Court; a daughter, Angela Palmer of Columbia; a brother Charlie J. Palmer of Gray Court; two sisters, Janie Palmer and Roberta Burns and her husband, Robert, both of Coolidge, Ga.; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oaks AME Church, North Santee, with the Rev. Marco Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Walter A. Moore Jr., 50, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002.
Born in Kinston, N.C., he was a son of Beatrice Langston Johnson and the late Walter Albert Moore. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, was a Baptist and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Survivors besides his mother of Sumter include a special friend, Susan White of Sumter; a son, Jamie Moore of Sumter; a daughter, Stephanie Moore of Manning; a brother, Butch Moore of Sumter; two sisters, Brenda Ross and her husband, Wayne, and Patricia Timmons and her husband, Hank, all of Sumter; two nieces, Angelia Kirk and Kayla Timmons; and two nephews, Robert Kirk and Ryan Timmons.
A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Deloris Lawson Hill, 66, widow of Hamilton Daniel Hill Sr., died Monday, July 29, 2002, at her home.
Born Oct. 5, 1935, in Wedgefield, she was a daughter of Susan Lillie Lawson and the late Andrew Louis Benjamin Lawson and a foster daughter of the late Ephesian and Susan Jones Lawson. She was a graduate of St. Michael School in Wedgefield. At an early age, she became a member of Orangehill AME Church and later a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board, the women’s choir and missionary society. She was employed by the Campbell Soup Co. for many years.
Survivors besides her mother of Camden, N.J., are four sons, Hamilton D. Hill of Pasadena, Calif., Wayne G. Hill and his wife, Valerie, of Wheaton, Ill., Michael L. Hill and his wife, Lucreatia, of Savannah, Ga., and James H. Hill II of Dalzell; a daughter, Debra H. Gilbert and her husband, Eddie, of Stockbridge, Ga.; two brothers, Charlie Lawson and his wife, Eva Mae, of Sumter and Calvin Lawson of Norwalk, Conn.; five sisters, Odell Harris of Manhattan, N.Y., Lillian Johnson and her husband, Herman, of Summerdale, N.J., Lenell Bey and her husband, Claudius, of Camden, N.J., Mildred Lawson of Pennsauken, N.J., and Susan Lawson of Wayne, N.J.; two foster sisters, Annie Bell Gooden of Sumter and Emma Mashore of Richmond, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

ALBANY, Ga. — Carl Avery Bryant, 51, husband of Debra McFadden-Bryant, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at his home.
Born Oct. 24, 1950, in Vildalia, Ga., he was a son of the late Wilson Jennings Bryant and Fannie Rosa Dunham. He was a criminal defense and civil law attorney, who practiced for more than 27 years throughout the United States. He was a 1972 graduate of Albany State College and earned his juris doctorate from the University of Florida College of Law in 1975. He previously associated with the law firm of King, Phipps and Associates. In 1991, he launched a solo practice, forming the law office of Carl A. Bryant P.C. His professional associations included pass president of the Georgia Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, vice chairman of the Georgia Indigent Defense Council and numerous bar and trial lawyer associations.
Survivors besides his wife, a former Sumter, S.C., resident, include a son Jelani Hakeem Bryant; a daughter, Sahaar-Jade; mother-in-law, Lenell D. McFadden of Sumter; a stepmother, Alberta Bryant of Albany; two aunts, Ella Mae Dunham Williams and her husband, R.B., of Phenix City, Ala., and Fannie Mae Dunham of Columbus, Ga.; two uncles, Willie Dunham of Columbus, Ga., and John Dunham and his wife, Kate, of Dayton, Ohio; and a sister, Carolyn Green of Albany.
A memorial service was held July 25 at Albany State University ACAD Auditorium, Albany.
