Friendly Wilder, 55, widower of Lillian Rhames Wilder, died Sunday,
Aug. 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 19, 1946, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Bertie Wilder and Rebecca Johnson Wilder. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was employed by Mack’s Rabon Jr. Farms in Aynor for 13 years.
Survivors include two sons, Rochester Wilder of Summerton and Freddie Wilder of Sumter; two daughters, Rochelle Wilder of Sumter and Diane Robinson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Leo Wilder of Wilmington, N.C., and Earl Wilder of Summerton; two sisters, Easterover “Feola” Adams and Eva Mae Brown and her husband, Leo, all of Summerton; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Silver community, with the Rev. William L. Chandler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.
The funeral procession will leave at 3 p.m. from the home of his sister-in-law, Barbara Rhames, 11 First St., Summerton.
Viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Rochelle Wilder, 514 E. Charlotte Ave., Sumter.

MARTHA FOWLER POMPEY
COLUMBIA — Martha Fowler Pompey, 89, widow of Chester L. Pompey, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Heartland Rehabilitation Medical Center in West Columbia.
Born Dec. 20, 1912, in Wake County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Thomas Fowler and Alva Stewart Fowler.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Dorothy Pompey, 1734 Overhill Road, Columbia.

MURRAY C. BLANDING
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Murray C. Blanding, 57, husband of Irene Bradford Blanding, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at Greater Southeast Community Hospital.
Born Dec. 17, 1944, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Murry Brunson and Rebecca Blanding. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Maj. Murray K. Blanding Sr. of
El Paso, Tx., and Marvin L. Blanding of Hartsville; a daughter, Angela M. Blanding of Sumter; four brothers, Earl Brunson, Richard Blanding, and Elijah Blanding, all of Sumter, and Leroy Brunson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Mamie Lee Mathis of Brooklyn, N.Y., Winnie Washington of Sumter, and Rosa Julius of Elizabeth, N.J.; a mother-in-law, Annie Bradford; and 17 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Martin; two sisters, Dorothy Moon and Rebecca Blanding; and four brothers, Lucious Blanding, Murray Brunson, Dallas Brunson and James Brunson.
The remains will be placed in the church 12:30 p.m. Monday, and services will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Mt. Olive AME Church, S.C. 441, Woodrow.
The funeral procession will leave 1 p.m. from 28 James St., Sumter.
The Revs. Timothy A. Johnson and Ernest Jackson will officiate, assisted by Revs. Roberta Wilson, J. Elbert Williams, Frank E. Williams Sr. and Virginia E. Williams.
Burial will be in Colclough Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be relatives and friends of the family. Floral bearers will be members of the Women’s Missionary Society.

JOHNNY E. BUTLER
CAMDEN — Johnny Eugene Butler, 54, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Kershaw County Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 14, 1947, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Willie Butler and Lugenia Harriot Butler.
Survivors include a daughter, Anne Lugenia McDaniel of Savannah, Ga.; a son-in-law, Michael McDaniel of Savannah, Ga.; two brothers, John D. Butler of Bishopville, and Lucius Jenkins of Lugoff; three sisters, Ruby Williams, Winnie Wilson and Emma James, all of Bishopville; and two grandchildren.
Services will be held 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Mt. Olive AME Church, S.C. 441, Woodrow. The Rev. Timothy A. Johnson will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Roberta Wilson.
The funeral procession will leave 4:10 p.m. from the home of his sister, Emma James, at 1933 Rembert Branch Church Road, Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home.
Burial will be in Cooksfield Cemetery in Dalzell. Pallbearers will be members of the Elite Club of Woodrow. Floral bearers will be grandnieces and friends of the family.

JANIS PATRICIA MARTIN HULING
Janis Patricia Martin Huling, wife of James William Huling Jr., died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was the daughter of Joseph Martin and Rosemarie Buechele Martin. She graduated from Penn State University and after graduating taught elementary school in Blair County, Pa. She attended St. Anne’s Catholic Church.
Survivors beside her husband and parents include two sons, Jim Huling and Joseph Huling, both of the home in Sumter; a daughter, Linda Huling of Sumter; three brothers, Joseph Martin of Bellfonte, Pa., Jim Martin of Reading, Pa., and Lee Martin of Timmonium, Md.; and one sister, Elizabeth Kilcoyne of Hummelstown, Pa.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anne’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Daniel Carboy, C.S.s.R. officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday with a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home. Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
MATTHEW JONES
Matthew Jones Sr., 68, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 14, 1933, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Edmond Jones and Millie Spigner Jones. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He was a member of Beulah UME Church in Sumter and served as chairman of the steward board and as a member of the senior and gospel choirs, the usher board and the Sunday school department. He retired from the Boozer-Walton Construction Company and was a self-employed carpenter.
Survivors include his wife, Earline M. Jones of the home; six sons, Matthew Jr. and his wife, Marie, Larry and his wife, Rose Mary, Michael and his wife, Jacqueline, Jerome and his wife, Sharri, Wayne and his wife, Tara, all of Sumter, and Cloyd and his wife, Maria, of Columbia; two daughters, Qwendolyn McCants and her husband, Derrick, of Florence, and Renishica Jones of Sumter; two brothers, Leroy Jones and his wife, Geneva, of Sumter and Mark Jones of Brooklyn, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Curtis, Ulysee and Jake; and four sisters, Elouise, Dorothy, Millie and Priscilla.
Services will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Beulah UME Church. The Revs. Roosevelt Boyd, Richard Jordan, Sammie Simmons, Herbert Bailey, Elder Jackie Holland and Minister Ivory Mitchell will officiate.
Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
The funeral procession will leave 2:15 p.m. Monday from the home, 917 Jensen St., Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home.
A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Community Funeral Home.
