COLUMBIA — Callie Gaymon Brailsford, 90, widow of Hampton Brailsford, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 3, 1911, in Panola, she was a daughter of the late Dolphus Gaymon Sr. and Susan Bates Gaymon. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she joined St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Silver, where she served as a faithful member of the missionary for a number of years. She worked as a seamstress and homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Lee Brailsford and his wife, Flossie, Roddie Brailsford and his wife, Millin, all of Sumter, and Manning Brailsford and his wife, Lila, of Columbia; three daughters, Susan White, Elouise Hilton, and Clara Brown and her husband, Howard, all of Sumter; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Earlie Brailsford; five brothers, Herbert Sr., Ernest, Dolphus, Earlie and Harvey Gaymon; and two sisters, Lila G. Durant and Harriet “Resie” G. Ellison.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Silver with the Rev. Willie Chandler, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Adrian J. McIIwain and Joseph Pringle.
Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

LYNCHBURG — Tony Allen “Ricky” Brown, 39, of 5950 Mt. Sinai Church Road died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, in Turbeville, Sumter County.
Born May 27, 1963, in New Zion, Clarendon County, he was a son of Isiah “Son” Brown Sr. and the late Leola Herring Brown. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a 1983 graduate of East Clarendon High School, Turbeville, where he was a member of the football team and the FFA. In his youth, he joined Howard Chapel AME Church, New Zion. He was a landscaper for a number of years in Clarendon, Sumter, Lee and Williamsburg counties.
Survivors besides his father of New Zion include his paternal grandmother, Ella Mae Brown of New Zion; three sons, Antonio Brown of Turbeville, Devon Brown and Antonio Dickey, both of Lynchburg; a daughter, LaToya Singletary of Turbeville; four brothers, Isiah Brown Jr. and his wife, Ann, of New Zion, Eddie Brown and his wife, Helen, of Manning, Leethaniel Gibbons of Newark, N.J., and Tony McCants of Gable; four sisters, Mary R. Pearson of Sumter, Laura Gibbons of Turbeville, Vivian Gibbons of Lynchburg and Shirley Miller and her husband, Joseph, of Gable; two uncles; six aunts; a great-uncle; three great-aunts; 18 nephews and nieces; four great-nephews; and four great-nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Howard Chapel AME Church, New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Larry Barnes, Alfred Bradley and Jerome McCray. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

Gregory Burnett, 55, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 19, 1947, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Sylvester Burnett and Janie Peterson. He attended Brooklyn, N.Y., public schools.
Survivors include a son, Theodore “Teddy” Flemmings of Sumter; an aunt, Mable Pearson of Sumter; and two sisters, Peggy Lewis of Atlanta and Ada Murdaugh of Queens, N.Y.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home with the Rev. Ernest Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery.

COLUMBIA — Tiffany “Tip” Valarie Davis, 14, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 14, 1988, in Columbia, she was a daughter of Julian and Gloria Hodge Davis and granddaughter of Ben and Marie Davis and the late Harold and Dorothy Hodge Maxfield and Sammie Lee Walters. She was an eighth grader at Chestnut Oaks Middle School, where she was a member of the advanced choir. She attended Crosswell Elementary School, where she was a safety patrol. She was a member of Union Station AME Church, where she sang in the youth choir, was a member of the YPD, and served on the junior usher board. She was a candy striper at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Survivors besides her parents and her paternal grandparents of Sumter include two paternal great-grandmothers, Maggie Jackson of Savannah, Ga., and Thelma Reed of Dalzell; a brother, Earl Stacy Hodge and his wife, Faith, of Atlanta; two sisters, Kenyatta Dionne Jasper and her husband, Erick, and Monica Monique Davis, both of the home; two stepbrothers, Stacy Gadson and his wife, Henrietta, of Columbia and James Gadson of Sumter; two nephews, Jahmal Stacy Hodge of Atlanta and Trevon Daeshawn Julian Davis of the home; two nieces, Kenya Destiny Davis and Armonie Dionne Davis, both of the home; and her godparents, Derrick and Frances Hastie of Sumter.
She was preceded in death by an uncle, Ben Davis Jr.

CHARLOTTE — Marion James, 79, widower of Louise Richardson James, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital.
Born Sept. 19, 1923, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Peter and Arneathea James. He was formerly of Scotkins Court, Sumter. He attended Sumter schools. In his youth, he joined First Baptist Missionary Church, where he served on the deacon board and was a member of the First Baptist Gospel Choir. He served as a faithful member, until his health began to deteriorate. He moved to Charlotte and attended Nazareth Outreach Baptist Church under the watch care of Pastor Hazel Washington. He retired from Georgia Pacific Corp. He was also a member of the BBS Community Club.
Survivors include four daughters, the Rev. Deloris Tucker and her husband, Theodore, Cynthia McCullough and Alelia Yolanda James, all of Charlotte, and Lorraine Avista James of Columbia; a brother-in-law, Hazel Richardson of Philadelphia; a sister-in-law, Ethel R. Green of Sumter; two grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Missionary Church with the Rev. Dr. W.S. Randolph, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Hazel Washington and Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

LYNCHBURG — Frazier “Buster” Laws, husband of Mary Laws, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late John Wesley and Betty Rhodes Laws. He attended Lee County public schools. He was a lifelong member of St. John United Methodist Church, where he served in a number of capacities. He retired in 1990 from Nucor Steel.
Survivors besides his wife of Timmonsville include five sons, Henry Laws and his wife, Harriet, and Anthony James Laws of Lynchburg; Alphonso Laws and his wife, Christine, of Bronx, N.Y., Jefferson Laws and his wife, Gina, and Roger Laws and his wife, Karen, all of New York; four daughters, Lucinda Laws of Lynchburg, Virginia McDowell of Timmonsville, Shirley Green and her husband, Harry, of Baltimore and Gennis Rogers of New York; three brothers, Curley Laws and his wife, Lena, Robert Laws and his wife, Hattie, of Florida and Leroy Laws and his wife, Faye, of Sumter; five sisters, Hattie McCray of Lynchburg, Isabell Frierson and Gracie Sharpe, both of New Jersey, Lucille Isaac and Betty Robinson, both of New York; a special granddaughter raised in the home, Shalandra Laws; a special grandson and care giver, Brandon McDowell of Timmonsville; a special friend, Dan Reddin Jr.; a special cousin, Mary Quattlebaum of Lynchburg; 13 other grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Frazier Allen Laws.

Sarah B. McDuffie, widow of Robert McDuffie Sr., died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at her home in Sumter.
Born June 3, 1924, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Ruff Brunson and Mattie Copeland Brunson. She joined Salem Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member of several organizations including the senior choir and the missionary society. She attended Lee County public schools. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include five sons, Melton McDuffie and Hazel R. McDuffie, both of Sumter, Odell McDuffie of Charlotte, retired SFC Sgt. Willie L. McDuffie and his wife, Vangie, of Fayetteville, N.C., and retired Staff Sgt. Dexter B. McDuffie and his wife, Theresa, of El Paso, Texas; two daughters, Betty B. LeSane and Abigail McDuffie and her husband, Larry, of Sumter; three grandchildren she raised as her own, James L. McDuffie, Michael R. McDuffie and Ashley R. McDuffie; a sister, Dora Mae Carter of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Carrie Bell Carolina and her husband, Nelson, of Mayesville; a son-in-law, Larry Felder of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Maggie Copeland, Rosa Bell McDuffie and Gerona Davis; a cousin, Mabel Rouse; three friends, Viola New, Ella Anderson and Eva Dean; nine additional grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Floyd “Ray” Brunson and Marshall McDuffie; two brothers, J.P. Copeland and Harry Copeland; a sister, Elizabeth Harris; a granddaughter, Stephanie Durant; and a son-in-law, Leroy LeSane.

BESSIE W. MONROE
Bessie Inez Wilson Monroe, 80, widow of Elder Carnell I. Monroe, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at her home.
Born April 13, 1922, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Mackey M. and Ethel V. Watson Wilson. She attended Sumter County public schools, where she graduated from Mayesville Institute in 1941. In 1945, she received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Morris College. She completed further studies at the University of South Carolina. After graduating from Morris College, she began her teaching career for a number of years in several counties and throughout Sumter and the surrounding communities. She was formerly employed with the Sumter County Department of Social Services. Prior to her retirement, she worked at the St. John and the High Hills Day Care Centers.
She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, where she served in a number of capacities, including trustee, member of the stewardess board, senior choir, charge conference secretary, United Methodist Women and a member of the Pastor’s Parish Relations Committee. She was also committed to her community and was active in the local Democratic Party and the NAACP. She was a member of Skyway Chapter No. 351 Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a sister, Lillian M.W. Haynesworth; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mack Ivey Wilson; and two sisters, Rose Wilson and Mable C. McCutheon.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie C. Thomas Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Richard Baxter.
Burial will be in Goodwill Presbyterian Church in Mayesville.

MANNING — Roosevelt “Rock” Pearson, 103, widower of Maggie Montgomery Pearson and Rosa Smith Johnson Pearson, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 12, 1899, in the Freetown section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Henry Pearson and Anna Liza Johnson Pearson. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was one of the organizers and founders of White Oak AME Church.
Survivors include a son, Charles Pearson and his wife, Polly, of Miami; a daughter, Annie Mae McCray of Leisure City, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Inez J. Wilson and her companion, Willie Montgomery, of Manning; a granddaughter and care giver, Madeline Billups of the home; a brother, Beasley Pearson of Manning; 13 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Leola Montgomery Cain; and a son, James Pearson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Triumph The Church Kingdom of God of Christ with Elder Sampson Pearson, pastor, and Mattie Mouzon, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerial Dingle.

COLUMBIA — Brother and retired Master Sgt. Robert L. Strickland Sr., 68, husband of Annie L. Moore Strickland, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.
Born Oct. 5, 1933, in LaGrange, Tenn., he was a son of the late Jasper“Jack” Strickland and Ora Bell Lambert Strickland. He retired from Shaw Air Force Base as the chef house dining facility manager, with 26 years of service to the United States Air Force. He was also a manager for Williams Services, Grant Services for the Army National Guard Dining Facility and volunteered as a Red Cross volunteer at Shaw Air Force Base Pharmacy.
Survivors besides his wife include a son, Robert L. Strickland Jr. of Sumter; two daughters, Jacqueline D. Parks of Fredrick, Md., and Gina E. Strickland Cooper of Jonesboro, Ga.; six sisters, Dorothy Strickland of Memphis, Tenn., Emma Hawkins, Mattie Williams and Vinnie P. Strickland, all of Chicago, Mary Alice Smith and Katie Smith, both of Indiana; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Hardy and James Strickland.
Wake services will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home.
