COLUMBIA — Ashley Dommance Whack, 13, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 12, 1989, in Baltimore, she was a daughter of the late Linda Joyce Clark. She was an eighth-grade student at Southeast Middle School in Columbia.
Survivors include her foster parents, Booker and Shelley Nelson and family; previous foster parents, George and Eleanor Stukes and family; Bridgette Toomer of Mentor Inc.; her case manager, Hallie Conyers; and the family of Sumter County Department of Social Services.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Laura Whack.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the chapel of Job’s Mortuary Inc. with the Rev. Joan Murrill officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lennard Nelson. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery.

BETHUNE — James Wilson died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at his home.
Born Dec. 12, 1920, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Elliott Simon and Diana Wilson.
Survivors include a niece and care giver, Precilla Mack of the home; and a number of other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Square Deal Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mark Cemetery.

REUBEN F. ATKINS
BISHOPVILLE — Reuben Franklin Atkins, 65, husband of Margaret Ann Farmer Atkins, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Talmadge and Mattie House Atkins. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was retired from Cross Welding Co.
Survivors besides his wife of Bishopville include three daughters, Nancy Kelley, Donna Clyburn and her husband, Freddy, and Vickie Moniz and her husband, Luis, all of Bishopville; three sisters, Betty Branham and Estelle Baker, both of Sumter, and Mary Tidwell of Bishopville; and five grandchildren, Justin Atkins, Frankie Kelley, Kayla Clyburn, Alison Clyburn and Jacob Moniz.
He was preceded in death by a son, Reuben Darrel Atkins.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Miller and Lonnie Watford, and Johnny Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

HAROLD S. BOOZER
Harold Smith Boozer, 73, husband of Patricia Zeigler Boozer, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Denmark, he was a son of the late Harold Smith Boozer and Willie Dell Hutto Boozer. He was a graduate of Clemson University with a degree in civil engineering. He was co-founder of Boozer, Wharton & Zeigler Construction Co. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Sumter Wateree Hunt Club, Brohun Lake Club and Mt. Vernon Coffee Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a member of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School class.
Survivors besides his wife of 51 years include a son, Harold “Pal” Smith Boozer III of Sumter; a daughter, Lynda Beth Boozer of Charlotte; a brother, Charles Boozer of Edisto Island; and two grandchildren, Michael Wesley Boozer and Elizabeth Lee Boozer, both of Sumter.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Louis Jamison officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
Dr. Charlie Andrews, Sam Crawford, Cecil Crayton, Bob Long, Kim Seebeck and Whit Wharton will serve as pallbearers.

Thomas S. Cain, widower of Mattie Howard Cain, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was a son of the late Melvin and Minnie Johnson Cain. He attended Sumter County public schools. In his youth, he joined Goodwill Presbyterian Church. He later joined Unionville AME Church, where he was a member of the trustee board, usher board, class leader, and a number of other organizations.
Survivors include four sons, Melvin S. Cain and his wife, Mary, John Cain and his wife, Viola, of Mayesville, Harry M. Cain and his wife, Shirley, of Winnsboro and Charlie Cain and his wife, Mary E., of Capital Heights, Md.; two daughters, Dorothy M. Wright of Sumter and Jannie Wells and her husband, William, of Capital Heights; two adopted daughters, Victoria Carter and Virginia Carter Thomas of Bishopville; a brother, Bryant C. Cain of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Eliza Frierson of Bishopville; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Wednesday at Unionville AME Church in St. Charles with the Rev. Joshua Dupree, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Laddie Howard. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

Esther McLean Osteen, 88, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at her home.
Born in Georgia, she was a daughter of the late John O. McClain and Maybell McClain Sharpe and stepdaughter of the late Benjamin B. Sharpe. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church. She was retired from Pioneer Ltd. She was twice married, first to the late W.B. Bradley Sr. and later to the late Lonnie Osteen.
Survivors include two sons, W. Arthur Bradley of Sumter and W.B. Bradley Jr. of Sunnyvale, Calif.; two daughters, Nadine Lowery and Mary R. Ridgill and her husband, H. Frank, of Sumter; a sister, Ollie Mae Meeks of Sumter; a brother, Frank Sharpe of Livermore, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Evan E. Osteen Sr.; a grandson, Frank Bradley; a sister, Rena Hinson; and a brother, Arthur McClain.

MANNING — Mamie Lee Baker Reed, 56, wife of Jasper Reed, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born July 31, 1946, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Willie Baker and Rosa Bell Hunter Baker. She attended Lee County public schools.
Survivors besides her husband include two godsons, Danny Johntrell Baker and Drayquan Shaw; three brothers, Thomas, Sammy and Calvin Baker; and five sisters, Willie Mae Goggins, Pauline Brisbon, Geraldine Baker, Gean Toney and Dorothy Green.

Bobbie Haywood Therrell, 95, widow of William Sollie Therrell, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at a local nursing facility.
Born in Waxhaw, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert Edward Haywood and Sue Dauster Haywood.
She was a member of Bonds Grove Methodist Church in Waxhaw.

John Matt Atkinson, 33, husband of Stephanie Atkinson, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Ocala Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Fla.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of William “Billy” and Loretta Atkinson. He was a Baptist and attended First Black Creek Baptist Church in Penney Farms, Fla. He moved to the Clay County community in 1988. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was dedicated to coaching football.
Survivors besides his wife of 13 years and his parents of South Carolina include four sons, John Mathew Atkinson Jr., Joshua Caleb Atkinson, Brody Chester Atkinson and Seth Daniel Atkinson; and two brothers, William “Bill” Atkinson and Charles Atkinson, both of South Carolina.

Born March 26, 1917, in Johnsonville, she was a daughter of the late John Sheriff Hodge and Lola Myrtle Lambert Hodge. She was a graduate of Sumter High School. She was a member of Armenia United Methodist Church. She was a charter member of the Order of Eastern Star Chester Chapter No. 15. She was a retired manager of the Chester office of the S.C. Employment Security Commission.
Survivors include three sons, Francis L. Atkinson and Douglas J. Atkinson, both of Chester, and Ernest A. Atkinson II of Matthews, N.C.; two sisters, Mildred Brown of Sumter and Lilla Belle Cauldle of McCormick; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
