DARCAS B. CARPENTER
Darcas B. Carpenter, 72, wife of 48 years to Joe T. Carpenter, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at her home.
Born in Cherryville, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Henry Carl and Elizabeth Linheart Beam.
She retired from the Shaw Air Force Base Exchange and later worked with Keep-In-Touch Inc. She was a Baptist.
Survivors besides her husband include a son, David Ray Carpenter of Bishopville; a daughter, Nelta K. Carpenter of Sumter; three brothers, Jake Beam of Gastonia, N.C., Tom Beam of Cherryville and Henry Carl Beam Jr. of Wiggins, Miss.; and two sisters, Nell Parker and Kay Willis, both of Cherryville.
She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Cole Carpenter; two brothers, Ray Beam and Pratt Beam; and a sister, Ruth Haxby.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Victor Cheek officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

PHILIP M. SANDERS
DALZELL — Philip Matthew Sanders, 23, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Born in Valdosta, Ga., he was a son of Stephen K. Sanders and Carolyn Wiley Sanders. He was general manager of Papa John’s Pizza.
Survivors besides his parents of the home include a brother, Christopher M. Sanders and his wife, Leah Sanders, of Greenville; a paternal grandmother, Maria B. Sanders of Martinez, Ga.; and a maternal grandfather, Dudley L. Wiley of Evans, Ga.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Thomas officiating.
Bob Smith, Leo Sustaita, Mike Lessard, Ryan Sivec, Jeremy Beben and Kenny Boyd will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

MARY D. STRANGE
Mary “Decky” Dobson Strange, 71, widow of Oscar Rivers Strange, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at the home of her sister in North Myrtle Beach.
Born in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Howard Drexel Dobson and Mary Alderman Dobson. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, David Strange of Sumter; three daughters, Mary Anne Brown and her husband, Mike Brown, of Virginia, Beth White and her husband, Scooter White, and Gingi Dooley of Sumter; two sisters, Jean Gulledge and her husband, Lucius Gulledge, of North Myrtle Beach and Betsy Richardson and her husband, Robert Richardson, of Sumter; eight grandchildren, Toby Brown, David White, Jimbo Brown, Fran Ricks, Brian White, Garet Strange, Heather Dooley, and Mary Beth Dooley; and a great-grandchild, Woods White.
She was preceded in death by a son, Buddy Strange. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Rowan and the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
John Sutton, Ricky Weathersbee, Lee Commins and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home.

MARY W. WALKER
Mary Wilson Walker, 96, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Covenant Place.
Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Rev. James Bentham Walker and Gertrude Wilson Walker.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and was a piano instructor in the Philadelphia area for many years.
Survivors include four sisters, Catherine W. Stradley, Elizabeth W. Edmunds and Virginia W. Bland, all of Sumter, and Helen W. Haltiwanger of Columbia; and 22 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. R. Murdoch Walker.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating.
The family will receive friends at the homes of local relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter Building Fund, P.O. Box 338, Sumter, SC 29151.

ROSA MCKNIGHT WHITE
PINEWOOD — Rosa “Dute” McKnight White, 99, widow of Christopher C. “Pee Vine” White, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Hopewell Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 18, 1902, in Rimini, she was a daughter of the late Johnnie and Lillie Hampton McKnight. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County.
For a number of years, she and her husband were prosperous farmers in the community of Clarendon County. She was a dedicated and faithful member of Antioch A.M.E. Church in Rimini, and served as a devoted member of the Missionary Society and Stewardess Board.
She was extremely proud of her family whose lives have been touched, directed and given purpose through her influence and motivation. She was blessed to have lived beyond the “three score and 10 years” and was a loyal friend, family member and neighbor. She believed in not sparing the rod and spoiling the child.
Survivors include two grandsons, Ben White and Tony White of Miami, Fla.; four nephews, Richard A. McKnight Sr., Moses McKnight Jr., John McKnight and Eddie McKnight Jr.; 11 nieces, Sarah Benjamin, Julia Cooper, Gardenia Graig, Elaine Davis, Lillie M. Frazier, Lillie Harvin, Lillie Hunter, Lucinda Johnson, Betty Merill, Doretha Stone, and Rosa Walker; a godchild/niece, Beatrice McKnight; a devoted cousin and caretaker, Camilla Briggs (Pernell) and her children, Linda Dawns, Brenda Briggs, Ophelia Briggs, Beverly Briggs, Larry Briggs, Pernell Briggs Jr., and Kenneth Briggs; an adopted niece, Ophelia Thomas; and an adopted nephew, Malachi Caldwell, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Antioch A.M.E. Church in Rimini, with the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott, pastor, the Rev. Mary Brailsford and the Rev. Warren Hatcher officiating.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in the Antioch A.M.E. Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Briggs, Freddie Junious, Elijah Riley, Leroy Dinkins, Albert McKnight, Elijah Stewart and Anderson B. Thomas. Floral bearers will be missionaries and fiends of the family.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of her niece, Beatrice McKnight, 2002 Drayton and McKnight Road in Rimini. The family will receive friends at the home as well. Fleming Funeral Home of Summerton is in charge of the arrangements.

LEONARD C. DUBOSE
Leonard Clastur DuBose, husband of Helen Herndon DuBose, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Anglo P. DuBose and the late Cynthia Hodge DuBose.
He was a member of Providence Baptist Church, the American Legion Post No. 15 and the VFW. He was a World War II Army veteran and a retired self-employed truck driver.
Survivors other than his wife include three sons, David Leonard DuBose and his wife, Cindy, Daryl Bruce DuBose and his wife, Marie, and Randal Herndon DuBose and his wife, Sarah, all of Sumter; two daughters, Karen DuBose Geddings and her husband, Wayne, of Sumter, and Melanie Moss and her husband, Roy, of Columbia; two sisters, Milford D. York of Sumter and Lester D. Jones of Jupiter, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Providence Baptist Church with Dr. Harold Greene and the Rev. Jerry Hodge officiating.
Burial will be in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Hodge, Dargan Hodge, Lynwood Hodge, Kenneth Pack, Douglas Hodge, Gene Hodge, Neal Geddings Jr. and Dr. E. M. DuBose.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 1030 Pearson Road.
Memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church.

FERDINAND NATHANIEL SR.
Ferdinand Nathaniel Sr., 93, husband of Janie Jackson Nathaniel, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at the McCoy Nursing Facility in Bishopville.
Born March 28, 1908, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Charles and Charity Golden Nathaniel.
The family will receive friends at the home at 4260 Wedgefield Road.
Services will be announced by James Funeral Home, Inc.

GENEVA VIRLYN MCLEOD
Geneva Virlyn McLeod, 54, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at her home.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of Sam McLeod and Murine Coulter McLeod. She was a member of Calvary Nazarene Church.
Surviving are her parents of Sumter; three sisters, Frances Gillespie and her husband, Fred Gillespie, of Gray Court, Donna Bell and her husband, Murry Bell, of Sumter, and Betty McLeod of Florence; two brothers, Floyd McLeod and his wife, Kathy McLeod, and Samuel James McLeod and his wife, Trina McLeod, all of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Calvary Nazarene Church with the Rev. Billy Williams and the Rev. G.W. Harrell officiating.
Burial will be in Coulter Cemetery in Wedgefield.
Pallbearers will be Alan Crawford, Steve Welsh, Lee Brown, Edward Barwick, Chuck Brown, Samuel James McLeod and Murry Bell.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

JOHN C. MCCOY SR.
John Clifton McCoy Sr., 58, husband of Ruby Effler McCoy, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Lamar, he was a son of the late Leon McCoy and Nancy Ann Lynch McCoy. He attended Pocalla Holiness Church and was a retired self-employed mechanic.
Survivors other than his wife of Sumter include two sons, John Clifton McCoy Jr. of Sumter and William T. McCoy of Clarendon County; a daughter, Connie Ann Malott of Missouri; four brothers, Leon McCoy, Tim McCoy, Glenn McCoy and Melvin McCoy, all of Sumter; two sisters, Patsy Frye of Sumter and Myrtle Ann Gibbons of Turbeville; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Collins and the Rev. Tim Hudson officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Trae Smoak, Johnny Houston, Robbie Hardin, Gregg Zepko, Ronnie Cooper and Neil Turner.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

MORRIS J. BRAILSFORD SR.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Morris J. Brailsford Sr., 56, husband of Della Ashby Brailsford, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Brooklyn Hospital.
Born July 30, 1945, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late William and Inez James Brailsford.
Services will be announced by Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton.

JESSICA CARSON CAMPBELL
Jessica Carson Campbell, infant daughter of Stacey L. and Stephanie L. Campbell, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Sumter and attended Sumter Baptist Temple.
Survivors other than her parents include a sister, Kansas Hope Campbell of the home; paternal grandparents Dean and Shirley Bell Campbell of Lexington; maternal grandparents Charles and Joyce Barr of Leesville; paternal great-grandparents Kenneth and Florence Campbell of Muncie, Ind.; maternal great-grandparents Don and Ruby Tyner of Bishopville; paternal great-grandmother Frances Bell of Bishopville; and a maternal great-great-grandmother, Lizzie Strickland of Hendersonville, N.C.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Richardson officiating.
Burial will be in the Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

John Neomia “Book” Jenkins, 92, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at National Care Nursing Home.
Born June 15, 1909, in Sumter, he was a son of the late James Sylvester Jenkins and Sarah Ann Bannister Jenkins.
The family will receive friends at 2725 Lowder Road.

NETTIE M. DURANT
BISHOPVILLE — Nettie M. Durant died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Mariner Health Center East in Sumter.
She was born in Lee County.
