JOHN W. BRYANT
John William Bryant, 57, husband of Linda Geddings Bryant, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Turbeville, he was a son of the late Dargan Scott Bryant and Rhoda Lee Parker Bryant. He was retired from Crescent Xcelite Industries after 22 years.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Johnny Bryant and his wife, Cindy, and Scott Bryant and his wife, Mary Beth, both of Sumter; a daughter Kimberly Bryant of Sumter; a brother, James Bryant of Sumter; two sisters, Glenda Jean Coulter and Marion Benenhaley, both of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Courtney Bryant, Lindsey Bryant and Haley Bryant.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Bryant.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Frances Strickland Sims and Ronald Lee officiating.
Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bill Daley, Wesley Goodwin, Bill Friel, Tripp Barkley, Michael Murphy and Robert Carpenter.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of Watson Hunting Club.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of her son, 3895 Selma Lane.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BLANCHE L. BURGESS
Blanche L. Burgess, widow of Wilford Burgess, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at her home, 40 Wen-Let Court.
Born April 11, 1932, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Sam Lewis Sr. and Rosa Pringle Lewis.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Helen Lewis, 640 Mims Road.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter.

CARL F. DARGAN
BISHOPVILLE — Carl F. Dargan, 38, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of Carl D. Dargan and the late Betty Jones Dargan.
Survivors besides his father of Durham, N.C., include a sister, Ann Elizabeth Dargan-McDonald of Salt Lake City.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Kingstree.
Norton Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

LEMAR DOUGLAS
DALZELL — Lemar Douglas, 68, died Monday, December 30, 2002, at his home.
Born in McColl, he was a son of the late Fred Douglas and Delma Dean Douglas. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran.
He retired from Springs Industries and was employed by Security Management of Sumter as a security guard.
Survivors include a daughter, Tiffany Marsh and her husband, Kirk, of Sumter; and a grandson, Joshua Marsh.
Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Concord Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Hord officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 490 Pinecrest Drive.
Memorials may be made to Concord Baptist Church, 1885 Myrtle Beach Highway, Sumter, SC 29153. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN E. EADY JR.
John E. Eady Jr., husband of Mary Davis Eady, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born Nov. 25, 1916, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late John E. Eady Sr. and Rachel Sanders Eady.
The family will receive friends at the Eady’s home, 150 Bethune Park Drive, Mayesville.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter.

MARGURITE B. MICKENS
Margurite B. Mickens, 89, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Hopewell HealthCare Center.
She was born Sept. 29, 1913, in Sumter.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Barbara Dupree, 1042 Old Pocalla Road.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary of Sumter.

ERNEST SPANN
Ernest Spann Sr. died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at 874 S. Harvin St.

JAMES A. TREXLER
James Alfred Trexler died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 15, 1930, in Irmo.
Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

WILLIE WITHERSPOON
Willie Witherspoon, 92, husband of Lillie Mae Walters Witherspoon, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 12, 1910, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Ivory and Catherine Witherspoon. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was employed in the Sumter area as a plumber for a number of years. In his youth, he joined Rock Hill Baptist Church, where he served on the board of trustees. In later years, he joined Jehovah Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Ada Witherspoon and her husband, Leroy, and Fannie English and her husband, Henry, both of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Sadie Witherspoon of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Willie Witherspoon Jr. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Irene Anthony, the Rev. Nate Brock and Pastor Leon Winn. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery.
Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Granddaughters and great-granddaughters will serve as floral bearers.
The casket will be placed in the church at noon. The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Fannie and Henry English, 601 Caroland Drive. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Fannie and Henry English.
Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES ANDERSON JR.
James Anderson Jr., 65, husband of Viola Spann Anderson, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 30, 1937, in Sumter County.
The family will receive friends at the home of his son, William Anderson, 270 Hess Lane, and also at the home of his sister, Martha Dicks, 704 Broad St.
Services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

ALTON HOLLIDAY
MANNING — Alton Holliday, 50, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 8, 1953, in Manning.
The family will receive friends at 101 Breedin St., Manning.
Services will be announced by Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning.

BLANCH L. BURGESS
Blanch L. Burgess died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at her home.
Born April 11, 1933, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Sam Lewis Sr. and Rosa P. Pringle. In her youth, she joined St. Luke AME Church, where she sang in the junior choir. She later became a member of Bethel AME Church, where she served as a president of the missionary society, class leader, member and secretary of the senior choir, president of the Stewardess Board No. 1, member of the budget committee, adviser for the young people’s choir, church program coordinator and a sponsor of a number of programs and rallies for the church. She was a 1952 graduate of Lincoln High School and received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Claflin University. She later completed graduate work at South Carolina State University and began her teaching career in 1957 in Mullins. In 1964, she began teaching in District 2 at Eastern High School. She later taught at Oakland Elementary, from where she retired after more than 30 years of service. Her professional organizations included the South Carolina Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the Grier Town Community Club and Club No. 52.
Survivors include a son, Troy Burgess of Sumter; a daughter, Chanise Lovae Burgess of Trenton, N.J.; seven brothers, Andrew J. Lewis and John Lewis of Columbia, Sam Lewis Jr. of Sumter, James Lewis of Richmond, Va., Charles Lewis of Garner, N.C., Woodrow T. Lewis of Spartanburg and Robert Lewis of Jersey City, N.J.; three sisters, Helen Lewis and Marie Wilson, both of Sumter, and Rosa L. Manigo of Bamberg; an aunt, Berthenia Spann of Sumter; a special niece, Ruby Stuckey Hendrix of Charleston; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Katie M. Stuckey.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethel AME Church, Calhoun Street, with the Rev. Robert L. Galloway, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. R.R. Hooper, George F. Manigo Jr., R.E. Bligen, O’Neal Miller and Harriet Massingill and Elder Dr. R.L. Mcants. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.
Members of the Lincoln High School Class of 1952 will serve as pallbearers and the Bethel AME Church Steward Board will serve as honorary pallbearers.

A viewing will be held from noon until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

BARBARA MAY-CANTY
Dr. Barbara May-Canty, widow of William M. Canty, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at her home.
Born July 20, 1937 in Bronx, N.Y., she was a daughter of Thelma E. Kirkland and the late Abram May. She was a stepdaughter of Dorsey Kirkland. She attended schools in Harlem, N.Y., and New York University. She was employed by a psychiatric unit of Manhattan State Hospital and later by Jacobi Hospital. She later attended Long Island University in New York, where she received a Ph.D. in nursing administration. After relocating to Sumter, she became an active participant in a number of clubs and organizations, including the NYCTA Retirees of South Carolina, Senior Citizens of the South and Sisters Who Care.
She was also involved with the Delta Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and multiple chapters of the American Nursing Association, including those in New York and South Carolina. She was also employed by Ramrod Construction Co.
Survivors besides her mother and stepmother include a stepdaughter, Stacey M. Duke; a sister, Arlene E. Green of Bronx; and a number of nieces, nephews and godchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Joelle Webster.
Memorial services will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Fairlawn, N.J. Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN P. JEFFERSON
PINEWOOD — John Peter Jefferson, husband of Mary Green Jefferson, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at his home in Rimini.
Born Jan. 9, 1937, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Charlie Briggs and Lillie Richardson James. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Antioch UME Church.
Survivors besides his wife of the home include three sons, Robert Lee Jefferson of Pinewood, Johnny Lee Jefferson of Greensboro, N.C., and Richard Jefferson of Ft. Stewart, Ga.; three daughters, Canza Green Jefferson and Elease Jefferson, both of Pinewood, and Ernestine J. Robinson of Thomasville, N.C.; four brothers, Ransom Richardson, Charlie Briggs, Henry Lee Briggs and Ransom Briggs of Pinewood; four sisters, Mary McCall and Sara Puryear, both of Irvington, N.J., and Margaret Watson and Doris B. Green of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Antioch UME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Willie Green, James Robinson and Amos Hatcher. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 2:15 p.m. from 2083 White-River Road.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at 2083 White-River Road, Rimini.
Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PATRICIA R. BLANDING
Patricia Gregg Rogers Blanding, 42, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 27, 1960, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Claudia Linton Gregg and the late Willie Gregg. She was a member of Clark United Methodist Church. She was employed by Martin Color Fi for more than a decade.
Survivors include a son, Douglas Steven Rogers Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, Desiree Faith Blanding of Sumter; three brothers, Johnnie Gregg and Larry Gregg and his wife, Shirley, both of Sumter, and Willie Gregg and his wife, Winifred, of Columbus, Ga.; a god brother, David Pencil; two sisters, Sallie Mae Cheatham and her husband, Ronald, of Campbellsville, Ky., and Claudine Gregg Heard of Sumter; a god sister, Patricia Reames; a grandmother, Rosa Linton; and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Claude Linton; and paternal grandparents, William and Mary Gregg. Wake services will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clark United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie C. Thomas officiating, assisted by the Rev. Prince Albert. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, 110 Dant St.
