Hummin Eliza Richburg Tobias, 71, widow of Kenneth O. Tobias, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 7, 1931, in Manning, she was a daughter of Geneva Mitchum Richburg and the late Rubin Richburg. She was retired from quality control at Elkay Manufacturing in Manning and was a member of Graham Baptist Church.
Surviving are her mother of Manning; a daughter, Genny Tobias Waynick and husband, George Waynick Jr., of Sumter; a son, Ken O. Tobias Jr. and wife, Elizabeth Lindsay Tobias, of Irmo; three sisters, Pauline R. Horton of Manning, Ruby R. Lane of Florence, and Cleo R. Farley of Manning; and a grandson, William Kenneth Tobias. She was preceded in death by a son, Kelvin Tobias; and a sister, Evalina R. Ardis.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. John Patrick will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Leon Tobias, Alvin Tobias, Dane Brown, Jeff Davis, Robbie Elmore and Terry Squires.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the residence of George and Genny Waynick Jr., 510 Bendale Road, Sumter.

SUMMERTON — Thomasena “Tommie” Nelson Junious, 36, of 211 Dickson St. Apt. K-1 in Manning, wife of Richard Junious Jr., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties.
Born Sept. 16, 1966, in Summerton, she was the daughter of Laurena Nelson Thompson and Chino Lawson and the stepdaughter of John H. Thompson.
The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, Laurena N. Thompson, 1382 Lilly Martin Road, Summerton.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — John Henry “Brother” Black, 68, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, in Rochester.
Born Jan. 6, 1935, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Pinkey “Pink” Black and Susanna “Bee” Ragins Black.
He was the brother of Mary Ellen Drayton and the brother-in-law of John “Pee Wee” Drayton of Pinewood.
Funeral services will be Tuesday.

CHARLES W. NEAL
Charles Warren Neal, 69, husband of Rosa Stewart Neal, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Springfield, he was a son of the late George Warren Neal and Nancy Stacey Neal.
Mr. Neal was a member of Northside Baptist Church and was a retired master sergeant from the U.S. Army after 21 years of service and was a Vietnam veteran. He was also retired from Suburban Propane Co.
Surviving are his wife of Sumter; one son, Eduard Neal of Sumter; three daughters, Patricia Carpenter of Matthews, N.C., Linda Bolden of Sumter and Carol Nicholls of Dunn, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Mary L. Andrews Jones of Sumter; one sister, Bertha Cassidy of Sumter; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. today in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dennis Welch officiating, with full military honors.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 1700 Ketch Ave.

VIRGINIA S. PALMER
Virginia Lee Smith Palmer, 86, widow of Joseph Palmer Jr., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in Sumter.
Born on Jan. 23, 1916, in Norfolk, Va., she was a daughter of the late John Addison Baxter Smith and Virginia Missoura Hewitt Smith.
Mrs. Palmer was a 1934 graduate of the Nightingale Banford School and a 1938 graduate of Vassar College. She attended the Sorbonne in Paris and did graduate work at the University of Strausbourg. Mrs. Palmer taught French and history in the Sumter School District 17.
Mrs. Palmer was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter where she had served as president of the Episcopal Church Women. She was also an active participant of Trinity Episcopal Church on Edisto Island, and a Daughter of the King.
An active volunteer in the community, Virginia Lee was particularly interested in tutoring. She served for 12 years as a member of the board of trustees for School District 17, past president of the Junior Welfare League of Sumter and a member of the South Carolina Episcopal Church Women Diocesan Board. Her membership included the Readers Club, the Women’s Literary Club, the Drama Club and the Bishop Gadsden Chapter of the Episcopal Church Women.
Mrs. Palmer is survived by four sons, Joseph Palmer III and his wife, Mary Ann Keating Palmer, of Spartanburg, John Addison Baxter Palmer and his wife, Marty Joiner Palmer, of Rock Hill, Edward Porcher Palmer and his wife, Martha Swann Palmer, of Westminster, Md., and Thomas Pamor Palmer and his wife, Alice Kraus Palmer, of Mahwah, N.J.; eight grandchildren, John Addison Baxter Palmer Jr., Heather Palmer Large, Katie Palmer Cate, Andrew Porcher Palmer, Whitney Yung-Hee Palmer, Joseph Samuel Palmer, Thomas Hinsdale Palmer and Frank Langley Palmer; and one great-grandchild, Joshua Langley Large.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. John M. Barr and the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Internment will follow at a later date at Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Edisto Island.

Born in Dillon, she was the daughter of the late Hensley Smith and the late Laura Marlow Smith.
Mrs. Godbold was a self employed seamstress and a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Lee Godbold Jr. of Cayce and Timothy D. Godbold of Sumter; one daughter, Linda G. Carter of Sumter; one granddaughter, Shannon Booth of Columbia and one great-granddaughter, Emily Booth of Columbia.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. — Lou “Sister” Alice Heyward Woods, 84, widow of Joseph Wood Sr., died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at Franklin Medical Center in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
Born May 27, 1918 in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Julian H. Heyward and Lue Hutling Heyward.
At an early age, she became a Christian and joined Mt. Pisgah AME Church in Sumter, where she participated in the Allen League with youth of the church. After graduating from Lincoln High School, she relocated to New York City. She joined Calvary AME Church for Brooklyn, N.Y. in June 1956 and worked in many capacities. She sang in the Senior Choir and served as president for four years. She was a member of the Senior Usher Board No. 2. She was devoted to her family and loved her church. She was an excellent seamstress and used her talent to assist family, friends and the less fortunate.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Woods Jr. of Fallsburg, N.Y. and Melvin Woods and his wife, Ruth, of Peekskill, N.Y.; a daughter, Darlene Lewis and her husband, Jesse, of Monticello, N.Y.; three brothers, Julian H. Heyward II of Columbia, George W. Heyward and his wife, Inez, of Sumter and (Ret.) Col. James O. Heyward Sr. and his wife, Willie Mae, of Huntsville, Ala.; a sister, Willie Mae Chase of Rockville Centre; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Heyward of Columbia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other devoted relatives and friends.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Juenarrl Keith, pastor, officiating. The casket will placed in the church at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in Walker Cemetery.

Bennie Davis Jr., age 65, of Willingboro, N.J., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at the Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County, Willingboro.
Bennie was born and raised in Sumter. He was employed at City Select Auto of Edgewater Park, N.J. He was also a member of the Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, Willingboro.
Bennie leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife of 38 years, Eleanor; four sons, Reginald of Rocky Mount, N.C., Bennie of Philadelphia, Benjamin and Christopher, both of Willingboro; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, Mack of Philadelphia, twin brothers James (Big Ba) of New York and James (Little Ba) of South Carolina; four sisters, Ida Mae White, Mattie Davis, Bessie Love and Mary Rogers, all of New York; five brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.
