SPARTANBURG — James Warren Jones, 71, of 764 North Church St. Apt. 701, Spartanburg, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Restorative Care Facility.
He was a native of Sumter and the son of the late Douglas Stanley and Ruby Inez Artis Jones. He was the widower of Annette Tisdale Jones. He is survived by a sister, Margaret Jones Singletary of Hamlet, N.C.

GEORGE S. WAITE Sr.
George Scott “Pop” Waite Sr., 79, widower of Agnes Waite, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Shotts, Lankashire, Scotland, he was the son of the late George Scott Waite and the late Annie Welsh Waite Flanagan and his stepfather, Pop Flanagan.
Mr. Waite retired after 25 years from Sears Roebuck in Miami and served his country in World War II.
Surviving are his son, George Scott Waite Jr. and his wife, Dianne, of Sumter; a son-in-law, Ben Rivers of Lilburn, Ga.; two brothers, James Waite and his wife, Maureen, of Fair Lawn, N.J., and P.J. Flanagan of York Town Hgts, N.Y.; three sisters, Agnes Donaghy and her husband, Frank, of Walhill, N.Y., Joan O’Neil of Cortland Manor, N.Y., and Elizabeth McCabe of Long Beach, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and special family members Larry and Wanda Rodgers of Rembert and Bobby and Juanita Rhodes of Sumter.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Ann Rivers, and a brother, William Heaney.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sumter First Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Larry Christopher officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the home, 1020 Santa Fe Trail.

Joe E. Griffin, 75, widower of Mary Bartlette Griffin, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late George Griffin and the late Emma Turner Griffin.
Mr. Griffin was a self-employed contractor and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Green Acres Assembly of God Church.
Surviving are a son, Joby Griffin of Sumter; four daughters, Nancy Graham, Ruby Allsbrook, Sandra Springs and Joanne Yarborough, all of Sumter; two brothers, Allen Griffin and Otto Griffin, both of Sumter; three sisters, Janie McLeod, Alpha Boyce and Cornell Geddings, all of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, George Griffin.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Collins and Rev. Hope Avins officiating.
Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Cecil Mitchum Jr., James Wright, Ben Wright, Doug Hayes and Danny McLeod.

OLANTA — Mary Ella Capers Cooper, 81, widow of M.C. Cooper, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at the residence, 113 Calhoun St. in Olanta.

ROBERT V. GRAHAM Jr.
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Robert Virgil Graham Jr. passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Savannah’s Hospice House after a long illness.
He was born in Elloree, the son of the late Robert Virgil Graham Sr. and Verleta Rast Graham.
He was a graduate of Carlisle Military School in Bamberg and studied engineering at Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton, N.C. He was owner of Garden City Sports and Marine in Orangeburg and an owner of Cranman’s Sporting Goods in Savannah. He was a well-known wildlife artist and master firearms engraver. He was a member of the Firearms Engraver’s Guild of America, Forest City Gun Club, Mid-Carolina Gun Club, Ducks Unlimited, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Order of the Stars and Bars, a former Vice Flotilla Commander in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, a former officer in the Coastal Scottish Heritage Society and a former trustee of Clan Graham Society of North America. He was a Presbyterian and attended Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church of Savannah.
Surviving are five daughters and three sons-in-law, Teresa Graham Stark and James Keith Stark Sr. of Wilmington, N.C.; Lisa Graham Pinckney and Andy Pinckney of Rock Hill; Ginger Graham Wilkins and Adam L. Wilkins of Savannah; Christy Graham Miller of Gastonia, N.C.; Laurie Graham Zimmerman of Charlotte; and grandchildren, Sarah Morgan and James Keith Stark Jr. of Wilmington; Wayne and Andrew Pinckney of Rock Hill; Olivia Marie and Harrison Robert Wilkins of Savannah; Alexander Zimmerman of Charlotte; aunts, Hazel Fickling, Shirley White and Margaret Yates, all of Sumter.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.

Pauline Whitaker Morrison, 73, wife of Herbert W. Morrison, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at her home under the care of hospice, family and friends. She had fought a courageous six-year battle with cancer.
Born in Quitman County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late James G. Whitaker and Effie Ellis Whitaker.
She lived her early childhood in Georgetown, Ga., until 1956, when she moved to Dothan, Ala. In 1970, she and the family settled in Dalzell. She was a homemaker and enjoyed doing for her family and friends. She enjoyed quilting and being active in church and supported the Relay for Life cancer walk with the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Morrison was a member of Springbank Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of the home; one son, James I. Webb and his wife, Julie, of Augusta, Ga.; one daughter, Elaine Hood and her husband, Larry, of Dalzell; two sisters, Gussie Smith and her husband, Mickey, of Coleman, Texas, and Mary Lisenby and her husband, Bill, of Dothan; one brother, George Whitaker and his wife, Martha, of Coleman; three grandchildren, Jamie Hood, Amanda Webb and Stacy Hood; and four stepgrandchildren, Justin, John, Kristin and Sarah Sancken.
She was predeceased by one sister, Frances Locke of Dothan.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Springbank Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. — Lou “Sister” Alice Heyward Woods, 84, widow of Joseph Woods Sr., died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Franklin Medical Center in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
Born May 27, 1918, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Julian H. Heyward and Lue Hutling Heyward.
At an early age, she became a Christian and joined Mt. Pisgah AME Church in Sumter, where she participated in the Allen League with youth of the church. After graduating from Lincoln High School, she relocated to New York City. She joined Calvary AME Church for Brooklyn, N.Y., in June 1956 and worked in many capacities. She sang in the senior choir and served as president for four years. She was a member of the senior usher board and the stewardess board No. 2. She was devoted to her family and loved her church. She was an excellent seamstress and used her talent to assist family, friends and the less fortunate. Survivors include two sons, Joseph Woods Jr. of Fallsburg, N.Y., and Melvin Woods and his wife, Ruth, of Peekskill, N.Y.; a daughter, Darlene Lewis and her husband, Jesse, of Monticello, N.Y.; three brothers, Julian H. Heyward II of Columbia, George W. Heyward and his wife, Inez, of Sumter and (Ret.) Col. James O. Heyward Sr. and his wife, Willie Mae, of Huntsville, Ala.; a sister, Willie Mae Chase of Rockville Centre; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Heyward of Columbia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other devoted relatives and friends.
Services will be held 11 a.m. today at Mt. Pisgah AME Church with the Rev. Dr. Juenarrl Keith, pastor, officiating. The casket will placed in the church at 10 a.m.

BISHOPVILLE — Baby L’Shaunti, 0, departed this earthly life on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at Baptist Hospital in Columbia. She was the daughter of Leroy and Melissa Woods of Bishopville.
She leaves to cherish her memories: a surviving twin sister, L’Shaun, along with two other sisters, Alexandria and Rubria of the home; two brothers, James and Trevon of the home; maternal grandparents, John and Ruby Singleton of Bishopville; paternal grandparents, Dorothy Perkins of Timmonsville and J.C. Frazier of Darlington; several aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. today at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church cemetery in Dalzell.

MANNING — Isaac “Ike” Levy Jr., 83, widower of Inez Pearson Levy, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 23, 1919, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Edmond Levy and Hattie Frazier Levy.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2454 Bonaza Crossing Road in the Jordan community of Manning. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

Col. (Ret.) William F. “Bo” Marshall, age 69, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at his residence.

WILLIAM P. JAMES Sr.
William Penn “Penny” James Sr., 59, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in Rimini.
Born June 14, 1943, in Clarendon County, he was son of the late Samuel Allen and Julia Fairy James.
He was a member of Williams Chapel AME Church and later joined Felderville AME Church in Santee. He was a graduate of Manchester High School Class of 1960. He earned a bachelor of science and master’s of education degree from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg and completed further studies at the University of South Carolina-Columbia.
He was employed as an agriculture teacher at Jenkins High School in Harleyville and at Scott’s Brach High School in Clarendon County. Later, he served as assistant principal at Scott’s Branch High School, where he retired in August 1993. After retirement, he worked as a construction contractor.
Survivors include two sons, William Penn James Jr. and his wife, Georgia, of Charlotte and Wayne Ulmer James of Orangeburg; two daughters, Whenda James Williams and her husband, Wayne, of Atlanta and Candye Velazquez of Columbia; five brothers, Wiley P. James, Washington C. James, the Rev. Saymon James, Wilkie James and Harold James; four sisters, Julia B. Boyd, Florance E. Knight, Ruth Diane James and Alice M. Cummings; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by Sammy James III.
The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Antioch AME Church in Rimini.
Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday at Antioch AME Church, the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott, pastor, presiding, the Rev. L.E. Simmons, eulogist, assisted by Pastor Stanley E. Hayes Sr., the Rev. Manuel Fogle, Pastor Marion Newton, Presiding Elder Rev. W.J. Baxter.
Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery in Rimini.

CHARLES “CHUCK” ROSE Jr.
Charles “Chuck” Rose Jr., 68, of 268 Club Acres, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2003, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
Mr. Rose was born in Pineville, Ky., a son of the late Charles Edward Rose and Margie Powell Rose.
He was retired district manager of Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Company after 27 years service. Mr. Rose was member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and was a Mason and Shriner. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Stack Rose, of the home; two daughters, Tammy Schriver and her husband, Tim, and Natalie Ferguson and her husband, Tony, all of Orangeburg; two sons, Jack Rose and his wife, Debbie, of Summerville, and Charles “Chucky” Rose of Afghanistan; a sister, Wanda Beavers and her husband, Robert, of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Donald R. Rose of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, John C. “Jack” Rose.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Schriver, 1548 Lee Blvd., and the funeral home.
Services will be held 3 p.m. today at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Smith and Rev. Frank Hay officiating.

MURRAY SMILING Sr.
SUMMERTON — Murray Smiling Sr., 85, widower of Evelyn Witherspoon Smiling, died Jan. 29, 2003, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility, Summerton.
Born Aug. 2, 1917, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Jack Smiling and Sarah Sweat Smiling. He received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter County. He joined Bethesda Baptist in Sumter at an early age and later he attended Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Murray (Wanda) Smiling Jr. of Sanford, Conn., James Riley, Louis (Sylvia) Riley and Jack (Norma) Smiling, all of Manning; five daughters, Flora Riley of Oakland, Calif., Lizzie Johnson, Leila (Kenneth) Carson and Joann Smiling, all of Sumter, and Margie (Randolph) Gaymon of Columbia; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Winston; and a brother, Harry Smiling.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church, Manning, with Elder Shelley Hickson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister Gregory Wilson, Minister Micheal Gilbert, Evangelist Lizzie A. Johnson and Evangelist Willie Mae Tomlin.
Burial will be in Bethesda Baptist Church in Sumter.
Pallbearers will be trustees.
Floral bearers will be the missionary society.
