Evelyn McCoy Britton, 94, wife of the late Leonard K. Britton, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003.
Born in St. Charles, she was the daughter of the late Wesley Kistler McCoy and the late Sarah Cummings McCoy.
Mrs. Britton was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church and co-founder of Young at Heart Senior Citizens Group.
Surviving are two sons, Robert K. Britton and James “Jay” W. Britton and his wife, Suzette, both of Sumter; one daughter, Carolyn Davis and her husband, E.W. Davis Sr., of Sumter; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard K. Britton; one son, Leonard Knox Britton Jr.; six sisters, Sarah Edens, Margaret Chandler, L.E. Belk, Julia McCoy, Mary Mayes and Alberta Pickett; and three brothers, Wesley McCoy, Wofford McCoy and Ashby McCoy.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Lee Philips officiating and the Rev. Jerry Watson assisting.
Burial was in the Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Luke Rogers, Warren Davis Jr., John Britton Boney, Dr. J.J. Britton, Dave McInnis and Russell Miller.

MAYESVILLE — Charlie V. Wells Sr., 42, husband of Veronica Franklin Wells, died Feb. 3, 2003, at 1057 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Road, Mayesville.
Born Aug. 29, 1960, in Sumter, he was a son of Sue Mae Plowden Wells and the late Ben Wells Sr.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 1057 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Road, Mayesville, and the home of his wife, 308 Main St., Lynchburg.

ROBERT H. BREWER
MONROE, N.C. — Robert Howard “Bud” Brewer, 77, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, in Monroe Square.
He was born on Oct. 18, 1925, in Union County, N.C., son of the late Robert A. and Anna McCain Brewer. He attended Jackson High School. He was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran, retired after 32 years as a service supervisor with Firestone of Monroe and retired after 15 years with Galloway Trucking. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Methodist Men. He was also a member of Woodmen of the World.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Gordon Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Lawrence. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Bennilee “Bennie” Walkup Brewer, on Jan. 30, 2002.
He is survived by daughters, Sandra Lee Brewer of Sumter and Sherry Council and husband, Chip, of Charlotte; brother, Davis Starnes Jr. of Monroe; sister, Gladys Ott of Charlotte; grandchildren, Robbie, Rebekah and Richard Council; and a very special friend, Robert Helms.
The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Gordon Funeral Service.

DENNIS L. ELMORE Sr.
Dennis Lee Elmore Sr., 83, husband of 64 years to Maybelle Thames Elmore, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Clarence E. Elmore and the late Mary E. Beasley Elmore.
Mr. Elmore was a founding member of Holy Cross Presbyterian Church and was a current member of Bondovlove Baptist Church. He was retired from the Carolina Coca-Cola Bottling Co. with 35 years of service. He was the 1982 recipient of the Friends of Sumter High School Award.
Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Dennis L. Elmore Jr. of Tampa, Fla., William R. “Bill” Elmore and his wife, Dee Dee, of Chapin, and Gerald Wayne Elmore and his wife, Elaine, of Summerton; a daughter, Catherine E. Gaylord and her husband, Gerald, of Dalzell; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by nine brothers, Luther, Claude, Ernest, Theo, Harris, Darwin, Walter, Ted and D.C. Elmore; and one sister, Bessie E. Skinner.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Bondovlove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Deacons of Bondovlove Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be the employees of the Carolina Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and Grady Locklear.

FLOREA McCULLOUGH
Florea McCullough, 82, widow of David McCullough, died Feb. 1, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Rocky Mount, N.C., Sept. 1, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Alonzo L. and Capitola Richardson Roberts.
She was a 1936 graduate of Lincoln High School. She then continued her education, graduating with a B.S. degree from Wilberforce University in Zenia, Ohio, in 1940. She received her master’s degree from the University of Michigan. She taught for many years in Los Angeles and Texas before returning to Sumter in 1972. She continued teaching at Alice Drive Middle School and Sumter High School. In 1981, she returned to Texas and worked at Bay Ridge Christian College, Houston. She then returned again to Sumter where she worked with the Sumter Literacy Program until her death.
Mrs. McCullough was a member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church while living in Sumter from childhood to adulthood. After she moved to Texas, she affiliated herself with the Church of the New Testament in Austin, Texas. After returning to Sumter in 1972, she affiliated herself with Walker Avenue Church of God, where she served faithfully in many capacities, to include: past president of the senior missionary society, past youth director of the church, adult Sunday school teacher, musician for the church, a member of the trustee board, constitution and bylaws committee.
Mrs. McCullough was key member of the state brotherhood and for 10 years she was the founding editor of the Brotherhood Magazine. She was a member of the Sumter County Retired Teacher’s Association Retired and the AARP. She was secretary of the Edwards Street Block Association and secretary of the Everready Willing Workers Club.
Survivors include a son, David Wayne McCullough; three grandchildren, Nikki Davon McCullough, Wanda LaFay McCullough and David Matthew McCullough, all of Austin, Texas; a nephew/son whom she raised, Samuel F.T. Brown; a sister, Mrs. Everette R. Brown; two nephews, Huroy H. Brown Jr. and Hakiim Sabur (Alonzo R. Brown); a niece, Evetta B. Vaughn; a brother-in-law, Huroy H. Brown Sr.; cousins and friends.
A wake service will be held today from 6 to 7 p.m. at Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.
The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Avenue Church of God.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at Walker Avenue Church of God at 3 p.m. with Pastor Bobby G. Damon officiating.
Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
The funeral procession will leave at 2 p.m. Wednesday from 19 South Blanding Ave., Sumter.

Ann Louise Leonard Roberts, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, in Sumter.
Born March 31, 1918, in Perrine (Dade County), Fla., she was a daughter of the late John and Eliza Leonard and wife of the late Edward B. Roberts Sr. An accomplished pianist, she performed often in the Miami area in the early 1930s, both as a soloist and with her sisters (the Leonard Sisters). In addition, she was a member of the White Temple Orchestra. She was a 1936 graduate of Miami High School. She was a member of the Alpha Mu chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International, serving as president 1959-1960. Moving to Naples, Fla., when her husband retired, she joined the East Naples United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the hand bell choir. In 1999, she moved to Sumter, where she attended Swan Lake Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Myrna L. Clark of Vancouver, Wash., sons, Edward B. Roberts Jr. of Sumter and John W. Roberts of Naples, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at Hodges Funeral Chapel in Naples Tuesday, Jan. 28. Burial was at Naples Memorial Gardens, beside her husband.

Rudolph V. Ward Jr., 48, died Feb. 2, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
Born Dec. 5, 1954, in Sumter, he was a son of Rudolph Ward Sr. and Sally Franklin Ward.

MANNING — Thomas Nelson of 1400 Williams Acres, Manning, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
Born in the Turbeville section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Gertrude Nelson and was reared by his grandmother, the late Etta Janie Felder. He received his formal education at Alcolu Elementary School. In his youth, he attended Mount Carmel Freewill Baptist Church Sunday School and worship service.
Survivors include a granduncle, William Penn Harrison of Manning; a grandaunt, Bernice McKinney of Manning; a host of cousins; and a caregiver, Eartha Williams of Manning.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Sophia S. Williams officiating, assisted by Dr. Cokley Richburg and evangelist Elizabeth Richburg.

Freddie Solomon Sr., 70, husband of Bessie Jones Solomon, died Feb. 4, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 18, 1932, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Isaac and Maggie Gamble Solomon. He attended the public schools of Lee County. He was employed by the Sumter Venetian Blind and Sumter Shoe Repair for a number of years before he retired. Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Richard Solomon of Plant City, Fla., Freddie (Delila) Solomon Jr. of Plant City, Fla., O’Neal (Dorothy) Solomon of Sumter and Roger (Gloria Jean) Solomon of Sumter; an adopted son, Shyquan M. Solomon of Sumter; a daughter, Shirley Ann Pugh of Sumter; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a granddaughter reared in the home, Breanna Solomon; five foster children, Victoria Evans, Michael Evans, David Thrower, Harold Hicks and Norris Harvin; one sister-in-law, Flossie (Humsey) Way; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rudolph V. “Rudy” Ward Jr., 48, died Feb. 2, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 5, 1954, at Shaw Air Force Base, he was a son of Rudolph Ward Sr. and Sally Franklin Ward. He attended St. Jude Elementary School and was a 1974 graduate of Sumter High School. He attended Voorhees College and Sumter Technical College. He also served in the United States Army. He had a great sense of humor and was known for making people laugh.
Survivors besides his parents include a son, Kendrick D. Ward of Sumter; a daughter, LaToya Ward of Atlanta; a brother, Michael G. (Shirley) Ward of Manassas, Va.; a sister, Terri W. (Clarence) Hanley of Clearwater, Fla.; a grandchild, Kendrick Ward Jr. of Columbia; estranged wife, Linda Young Ward; two stepsons, Richshawn Young and LaQuinton Young; two nieces; one nephew; six aunts; one uncle; and a host of other relatives and friends.

GABLE — Hayward W. Rhodes, 83, husband of Leola Johnson Rhodes, died Feb. 6, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Medical Center, Columbia.
Born July 1, 1919, in the Gable section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Martin Rhodes and Amy Rhodes.
