MANNING — Harry Durant, 71, widower of Alpha L. Spry Durant, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born July 27, 1931, in Mannning, he was a son of the late Julian Durant Sr. and Cannie Amos Durant, and a stepson of the late Lillie Briggs Durant. He was a professional carpenter, attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Mt. Zero Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda D. McDuffie of Manning and Denise Littrean of South Plainfield, N.J.; a brother, Hazel Durant and his wife, Josephine, of Manning; five sisters, Lillian Postell and her husband, Roosevelt, Lavern Ross and her husband, Edward, Jewel Boizer, all of Manning, Louise Wilson of Neptune, N.J., and Bonnie Tindal of Bellsville, Md.; and three grandchildren.
A wake service will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Fleming and Delaine Chapel on Boyce Street in Manning. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zero Baptist Church on S.C. 261.
Rev. Henry Presley, Pator Derrick Fort, Rev. Henry Cohen and Prophetess Regina Conyers will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Zero Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home, 2260 Fawn Ridge Road, Manning.

Sammie Lee “Daddy” Wright, 71, husband of Margaret Ely Wright, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia.
Born Dec. 19, 1931, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Joe Wright and Adline Smith Wright. He received his education in the public schools of Sumter County. He served in the Korean War and retired from REA Construction after many years of service.
Survivors in addition to his wife include five sons, Sammie Wright Jr., Ronnie James Wright, Donnie Joe Wright, all of Rembert, Eddie James Wright of Newark, N.J., and Herbert Leroy Wiley of New Rochelle, N.Y.; three daughters, Shirley Alston of Perth Amboy, N.J., Sandra Wright of Bronx, N.Y., and Carrie Nathaniel of Sumter; a brother, Marshall Alston of Neptune, N.J.; seven sisters, Rebecca Williams and her husband, Essie Mae, Jimmie Lee Harper, Susie Mae Alston, Helen Clinton, all of Neptune, N.J., Alice Williams, Emma Broger of Rembert, and Dorothy Butt of Irvington, N.J.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elise Patrick; and three brothers, Moses Williams, Jessie Alston, and Manning Alston. A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St.
The remains will be placed in High Hills A.M.E. Church on Meeting House Road in Dalzell at 2 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. at the church.
Burial will be in High Hill A.M.E. Churchyard Cemetery. Rev. M. Charmine Ragin will officiate, assisted by Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, Rev. James Cooper, Rev. Linda Richbow and Rev. Willie Dennis.
Pallbearers and floral bearers will be friends of the family.
The funeral procession will leave 2:30 p.m. from his home, 8075 Ruggs Lake Road in Rembert.

Thelma Elizabeth Pack Wells, 89, widower of Leonard R. “Boots” Wells Sr., died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at National Health Care in Sumter.
Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Julius M. Pack and Sadie Avin Pack. She was a retired seamstress from Pioneer Ltd. and a member of Unity Baptist Fellowship Church.
Surviving are two sons, Leonard R. Wells and his wife, Jane, of Cohoes, N.Y., and Waverly M. Wells and his wife, Diane, of Charleston; a daughter, Elizabeth McCathern of Sumter; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Pete Mixon officiating. Burial will follow at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Campbell Jr., George Campbell Sr., Randy Campbell, Frankie McDonald, Todd McDonald and Hazel Pack.

Betty Elizabeth James McKnight, 69, wife of Ramsey McKnight, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 15, 1933, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Jeff Burgess Sr. and Eliza Bell Burgess. The family will receive friends at the residence, 15 Webb Ave., Sumter.

SARAH ROBINSON
SUMMERTON — Sarah “Sodia” Robinson, 86, widow of Charlie Robinson, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 12, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 16, 1916, in Clarendon County, St. Paul community, Summerton, she was a daughter of the late James Butler and Florence Green Butler. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. A lifelong and dedicated member of Liberty A.M.E. Church, she served her church as a class leader and member of the missionary society, gospel choir, senior choir, kitchen committee, burial committee, stewardess board and willing workers club until her health failed. Her civic affiliations included the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Clarendon branch of the YMCA organization.
Survivors include a daughter, Emma Gean Robinson of hte home; three sisters, Ida Robinson, Henrietta Carswell of Washington, D.C., and Lillie Johnson of Buffalo, N.Y.; and an adopted niece, Emma Jane Lane of the home.
The remains will be placed in Historic Liberty Hill A.M.E. Church in Summerton noon Monday. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday. Rev. Malachi L. Duncan will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be men of the church. Floral bearers will be missionaries of the church.
The funeral procession will leave 12:45 p.m. Monday from her residence, 2730 Liberty Hill Road. The family will receive friends at her home.

Frances Margaret Turner Turner, 67, wife of Eleazer “Pete” Turner, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at the Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of Thomas W. Turner Sr. and the late Bessie Louise Turner.
Mrs. Turner was a member of the Church of Jesus of Latter Day Saints and retired from Sumter Casket Co. with 27 years of service.
Surviving are her husband of Sumter; her father of Sumter; three sons, Wayne Turner, Donnie Turner and Frankie Turner, all of Sumter; two daughters, Frances Morris and Judy Howell, both of Sumter; two brothers, Tommy Turner and Bobby Turner, both of Sumter; four sisters, Addie Turner, Josie Turner and Susan Smith, all of Sumter, and Norma Jean Osteen of California; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Douglas Turner.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Bishop Marion Ardis and the Rev. Dale Turner officiating.
Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Paul Franklin Slemmer Sr., 70, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at the Intermedical Hospice of South Carolina in Columbia.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Julius Franklin Slemmer and the late Pearl Rodgers Slemmer.
Mr. Slemmer attended Smithville Evangelical Church. He was a retired long distance truck driver and served as a security watchman for Korn Industries. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Cuban Crisis.
Surviving are two sons, Paul F. Slemmer Jr. and Michael Anthony Slemmer, both of Florence; two daughters, Kaye Lyons and Karen Thompson, both of Mooresville, N.C.; two sisters, Vivian Stevens of Sumter and Pauline Baker of Fayetteville, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Smithville Evangelical Church with the Rev. Freddie Gaymon and the Rev. Lewis Reed officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

MANNING — Mary Alice Way Barwick, 66, wife of J.M. Barwick Jr., died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born Dec. 25, 1936, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Charlton C. and Blanche Way Way. She was former owner of Barwick’s Flower and Gift Shop for more than 20 years, co-owner of Barwick’s Monuments in Manning and a retail merchant in Manning since 1960. She was a member of Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church for more than 20 years.
Surviving are her husband of Manning; a son, Joseph M. Barwick III of the home; a daughter, Angie Jordan and husband, Bill, of Manning; two sisters, Elva W. Albertson and Barbara Jane Way, both of Ridgeland; and two granddaughters, Mary Ashley Jordan and Amanda Paige Jordan.
