LENNIE E. MORRIS
PINEWOOD — Lennie E. Morris, 51, husband of Linda Whetzel Morris, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at his home.
Born Aug. 8, 1951, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jack and Nonie Bochette Morris. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and the owner and operator of Morris Home Improvements. He was also a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Surviving besides his wife of Pinewood is a son, Robert E. Morris of Pinewood; a daughter, Nonie Nichols of Sumter; two brothers, Lee Morris and his wife, Hilda, of Pinewood and Richard Boettger of Sumter; a half-brother, Tommy Morris of Sumter; a sister, Linda Griffith of Sumter; an aunt, Darlene Bochette of Sumter; a granddaughter; a niece, Lisa Thomas of Sumter and a number of nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Greene, the Rev. Dale Turner and the Rev. G.W. Harrell officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Sumter.
Pallbearers will be Keith Hodge, Carol Avins, Melvin Avins, Fernando Gomez, Mark McLeod and Julian Simmons. Honorary pallbearer will be Tommy Turner.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and other times at the home, 4385 Bethel Church Road.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150 or to Disabled American Veterans.
Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

DAVID TAYLOR Sr.
LYNCHBURG — David Taylor Sr., widower of Abell Jennings Taylor, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at Carolina Hospital System in Florence.
Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Mabel Butler Anderson and was reared by the late Essie Tucker.
Mr. Taylor was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He joined Mount Olive AME Church at an early age and was a farmer for many years.
Survivors include a devoted friend, Mrs. Earline Garner of Lynchburg; eight sons, David Taylor Jr., John Issac Taylor, Roosevelt Taylor, all of Dalzell, David Jenkins of Sumter, Robert (Mary) Garner of Mayesville, Lemont Garner of Lynchburg, Tyrone (Tangie) Garner and John (Evelyn) Garner, all of Hartsville; 10 daughters, Christine (Levi) Garner of Lynchburg, Fannie Mae Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor and Shirley Jenkins, all of Sumter, Barbara Taylor of Dalzell, Gloria (James) Parker of Bishopville, Sarah (Elijah) Parrott, Mary (Roosevelt) Garner, Frances (Edward) Garner and Shanta Garner, all of Lynchburg; four brothers, Archie (Mary) Anderson and Issac Anderson, all of Sumter, James E. (Thelma) Butler of Washington, D.C., and John P. Butler of Philadelphia; two sisters, Mary Frances (Grover) Wactor and Ruth Ann Wilson; five foster sisters, Doretia Porter, Earlese Holmes, Lillie Mae Rogers and Mabel (J.P.) Abrams, all of Sumter, and Fannie (Hall) Mickens of Irvington, N.J.; 25 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters, a foster brother and a foster sister.
Visitations will be held at the mortuary from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.
The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Mount Olive AME Church in the Woodrow Community of Lee County. Burial will follow in Colclough Cemetery in the Woodrow Community.
The family will receive friends at 195 E. Circle Drive in Lynchburg.
Wilson’s Funeral Home of 403 S. Main St. in Bishopville is in charge of arrangments.

LONNIE M. DuBOSE
Lonnie M. DuBose, 78, widower of LaVern Preast DuBose, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Moses Levi DuBose and the late Ida Jane Player DuBose.
Mr. DuBose was owner and operator of L&L Grocery, and a Master Mason of Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.
Surviving are a daughter, Scarlett Jackson Hurles of Auburndale, Fla.; three sons, Lonnie Gerald DuBose of Santee, Tommy L. Dubose and Heyward Terry DuBose, both of Sumter; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating.
Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Robbie Tedder, Alex Bramlett, Brian DuBose, Dale DuBose, Charlie DuBose, Larry Sutton, Buddy Hauser and Doug Humphries.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Morris, Fred McLemore, Laverne Player, Billy Steele and Broughton Dixon.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the home, 1554 Bradham Blvd.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

IONA P. CAPPER
Iona Peagler Capper, 83, widow of Urban Donald (Don) Capper, died Friday, March, 7, 2003, in Mission Veijo, Calif.
Born in St. Stephen, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Harmon Peagler and Hallie McMickin Peagler.
Mrs. Capper was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Dean Capper and his wife, Beatrice, of Mission Viejo, Calif.; one daughter, Donna Capper Martin and her husband, Terry, of Spokane, Wash.; one brother, Cleo Peagler of Sumter; two grandchildren, Page Capper and Austin Capper; two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Capper and Caden Capper.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Louis Jamison officiating.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

MELVINEE NICKELSON
BISHOPVILLE — Melvinee Nickelson, widow of Elder Arthur Nickelson, died March 12, 2003, in Sumter County, U.S. 15 North, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
The family will receive friends at 11 S. Salem Ave., Sumter.
Services will be announced by Wilson’s Funeral Home of Bishopville.

ALICE F. DURANT
SUMMERTON — Alice Faye “Coote” Durant, 55, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born in Clarendon County on Dec. 26, 1947, she was a daughter of the late Jenkins Lang and Lillie Rhames Lang. She attended Scott’s Branch High School. She was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, Levi Lang of Summerton; three sisters, Carrie Lue (Ernest) James of Bronx, N.Y., Deloris Lang and Julia Ann (Carlos) Lang, both of Summerton; two grandchildren; and one aunt, Malvenia Rhames of Summerton.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Queen Lang.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Baptist Church, Silver community, with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be friends of the family.
Floral bearers will be friends of the family.
The funeral procession will leave from the home of her sister, Julia Lang, No. 5 Third St., Summerton, at 1:30 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the home of Julia Lang.
Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN E. RHAMES
SUMMERTON — John Ervin Rhames, 57, died at his residence, First Street, Summerton, Tuesday, March 11, 2003.
Born in Summerton, Clarendon County, on Oct. 15, 1945, he was a son of the late Lindberg Rhames and Maybelle Merchant Rhames. He attended Scott’s Branch High School. He was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church. He was formerly employed by the town of Summerton Water Department for 26 years.
Survivors include a devoted companion, Rachel Ragin of Summerton; a son, John Ervin Rhames Jr. of Summerton; one adopted son, Devonce Ragin of Summerton; two adopted daughters, Elizabeth Solomon and Shalonda Ragin, both of Summerton; two brothers, Willie (Gayle) Rhames of Belle Glade, Fla., and Minister Jacob (Brenda) Rhames of Summerton; five sisters, Annie Faye (Willie) Stukes and Jacquliean (Thedore) Smythe, both of Summerton, Ernestine Rhames and Helen (Robert) Cage, both of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Minnie Ruth Rhames of Belle Glade, Fla.; two grandchildren; and one aunt, Malvenia Rhames of Summerton.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Baptist Church, Silver community, with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

GEORGE RUSH Jr.
George Rush Jr., husband of Kim Rush, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter County on Dec. 28, 1937, he was a son of George Rush Sr. and Ruth R. Nathaniel.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Blanche R. Mack, 12 Third Ave., Sumter.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel.

ELDER ARTHUR NICKELSON
BISHOPVILLE — Elder Arthur Nickelson, widower of Melvinee Nickelson, died March 12, 2003, in Sumter County, U.S. 15 North, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
The family will receive friends at 11 S. Salem Ave., Sumter.
Services will be announced by Wilson’s Funeral Home of Bishopville.

JAMES BENNETT
REMBERT — James Bennett, one of 21 children born to the late Elijah and Annie (Liddie) Reed Bennett on Oct. 29, 1925, in Lee County, and departed this life on March 12, 2003, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.
James was reared in a Christian home and was a member of Pine Grove AME Church. After marrying Lula Jenkins, he became a faithful member of Union Baptist Church until his death. He served as a member of the gospel choir, male chorus, trustee board, and was an active member of the senior Sunday school class.
Mr. Bennett retired from the South Carolina Department of Transportation after 17 years of service. He was a member of the Rembert Farmers Union and a former member of the National Clouds of Joy. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and babysitting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although he was not able to receive a formal education, he worked very hard to make sure that all of his children finished school.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Maggie, and 16 siblings.
He leaves to cherish his loving memories, a loving and faithful wife of 52 years, Minister Lula J. Bennett of Rembert; four sons, James A. (Vivian) Bennett and Marion O. (Vermell) Bennett, both of Rembert, Franklin D. (Betty) Bennett of Sumter, and Isaac E. (Vivian) Bennett of Orangeburg; two daughters, Lillian (Lorenzo) Dinkins of Rembert, and Gladys L. (Charles) Brooker of Jacksonville, Fla. He is also survived by two special nieces whom he, along with his wife, helped raise, Alice Heriot of Rembert and Wanda (Dabbous) Dajani of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters, Ollie Mae Hickman of Philadelphia, Elizabeth Stavis of Sumter, Anna “Maebe” Bennett of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Hayward “Jack” Bennett of Rembert; one uncle, Ernest Reed of Maryland; one aunt, Lena Hayward of New York; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Dennis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Haile’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PINKIE L. KILGO
Pinkie L. Kilgo, 100, widow of John H. Kilgo, died March 11, 2003, at Mariner Health, East.
Born Nov. 18, 1902, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Moses and Josephine Lovett Dunbar. She joined First Baptist Missionary Church and was a member for more than 50 years. She served on the missionary society board and the Louisa Johnson Thrift Club. She also sang on the senior choir and taught a primary Sunday school class. She was a member of the Morris College Alumni Association, Sumter County Teacher’s Association, South Carolina Education Association, National Council of Negro Women, Federation of Women and Youth, The Progressive Federated Club, The Green Thumb Club — St. Paul Chapter No. 345, Order of Eastern Star, the YWCA and the NAACP. For 33 years, she taught in Sumter at Lincoln High School and Stonehill Elementary School and taught for nine years in the Lee and Barnwell County school systems.
Survivors include two special nieces and caregivers, Audrey Skeens of the home and Willie Mae Glaze of Beaufort; one additional niece, Lottie Williams of Philadelphia; three nephews; and a host of grandnieces, grandnephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Missionary Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. William S. Randolph, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.
The body will be placed in the church Saturday at 10 a.m.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 208 S. Washington St., Sumter, SC 29150.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make contributions to the charity of your choice.
