STEPHEN T. BELANGIA JR.
MANNING — Stephen Tucker Belangia Jr., 16, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born Sept. 5, 1985, in Orangeburg, he was a son of Stephen Tucker Belangia Sr. and Terri Moody Belangia. He was a rising junior at Laurence Manning Academy, where he played football and was All-Area, All-Conference and All- State in baseball SCISA Division III. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors besides his parents of Manning include a sister, Jessica Belangia of Manning; maternal grandparents, Frank and Elizabeth Stevens of Orangeburg; paternal grandmother, Isabelle Belangia of Midland, N.C.; and maternal great-grandfather, Herbert Courtney of Orangeburg.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Laurence Manning Academy gymnasium with the Rev. Mike Lowder officiating, assisted by Jeff Lowder and Allen Johnson. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Manning.
Chris Jordan, Jamie Rowe, coach Mike Windham, coach Ricky Coker, Bill Brewer and Toy McCord will serve as pallbearers.
The Laurence Manning baseball team and the Manning-Santee American Legion baseball team will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of Bill Brewer, 5057 Bloomville Road, Manning.
Memorials may be made to the Laurence Manning Academy Athletic Department.

JANIE BRADLEY
ORANGEBURG — Janie Bradley, 73, of 824 Legare St., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Orangeburg Nursing Home.
Born May 5, 1929, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Ellison Bradley and Margaret Givens Bradley. She attended Sumter public schools. In her youth, she became a member of Clark United Methodist Church, where she served on the stewardess board. In the community, she was a member of North Main Community Club. After the death of her mother, she relocated to Orangeburg and attended Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
She became active with the Orangeburg Seniors, where she sang with the seniors on the choir and participated in a variety of activities and visited many of their scheduled trips.
Survivors include three brothers, Hazel Bradley of Brooklyn, N.Y., Willie E. Bradley Sr. of Orangeburg and Kenneth A. Bradley Sr. of Hopewell, Va.; and three sisters, Daisy Clemons of Hampton, Va., Willie Mae Haughton of Manassas, Va. and Ruth B. Harrison of Orangeburg.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Clarks United Methodist Church, U.S. 401, with the Rev. Willie Lawson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
The United Methodist Men will serve as pallbearers.
The funeral procession will leave at noon from the home of the Rev. Julius C. and Ruth Bradley Harrison, 630 Gadsden St., Orangeburg.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 8:30 p.m. today at the John Wesley Williams Sr. memorial chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., and other times at the home of the Rev. Julius C. and Ruth Bradley Harrison.
Simmons Funeral Home of Orangeburg is in charge of arrangements, assisted by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

EARTHA L. HAYNES
Eartha Lee Haynes, 77, widow of Sammie Haynes, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 24, 1924, in Santee, Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of the late Billy Anderson and Emma Giles Anderson Rittenbaker. She attended Elloree public schools.
In her youth, she joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully with the nurses aide ministry until her health failed. She was employed by Big Jim’s Restaurant for a number of years until she retired.
Survivors include a stepson, James Haynes of New York City; six daughters, Mattie Butler-Stroble and her husband, Chris, Sammie Lee Carter and her husband, Joseph, Betty Nelson and her husband, Willie, Dianne McKelvie, Charlene Wright and Wilhelmenia Warren, all of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Gin Franklin of Ohio; a grandson raised in her home, Robert McKelvie; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Rosa Lee and Janie Mae; two sisters, Reesa Thrower and Cora Lee Davis; and a brother, Billy Anderson.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Irene Anthony, Ellie Palmer, Larry Weston and Joshua Dupree. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, S.C. 6, Santee.
The casket will be placed in the church at noon.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Mattie Butler, 107 Woodlawn Ave.

PEARL B. RICHBURG
MANNING — Pearl Baggett Richburg, 89, widow of Joe Edward Richburg, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at her home in Manning.
Born Dec. 2, 1912, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Calvin Hartwell Baggett and Julia Parker Baggett. She was a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Richburg and his wife, Nancy, of Tupelo, Miss., and Bobby Richburg and his wife, Mackey, of Lugoff; two daughters, Betty Ruth Robinson of Orangeburg and Irene Brewer and her husband, Bill, of Manning; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Stacey Richburg; a son-in-law, Rennie Robinson; two brothers, Clarence and Bennie Baggett; and three sisters, Helen Baggett, Eva Hicks and Eula Brewer.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Revs. Kenneth Upright and Walt Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.
Grandsons, Hal Richburg, Chris Richburg, Marshall Robinson, Steve Robinson, Don Robinson, Mickey Brewer, Mike Richburg and Joe Richburg will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the home, 2531 Liberty Church Road, Manning.

Born Feb. 2, 1922, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Friendly Stukes and the late Millie Lawson Stukes.

CORA L. HUDSON
Cora Leviner Hudson, 75, widow of Robert Marvin Hudson Jr., died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Rockingham, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Berry Leviner and the late Donnie Leviner. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, and was retired from Pinewood Manufacturing Co.
Survivors include one son, David Shealy of Sumter; one stepson, Glen Hudson of Manning; four daughters, Josephine Boley and Donna Difford of Sumter, Linda Gregory of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Brenda Shealy of Columbia; six brothers, James Leviner and Benny Leviner, both of Gary, Ind., Jimmy Leviner of Raleigh, N.C., Henry Leviner of Wadesboro, N.C., Charles Leviner and Harvey Leviner of Hamlett, N.C.; and 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucky Woolard and Donnie Leviner, and one brother, Neil Leviner.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. James Grasty and G.W. Harrell officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Randy Helms, Thomas Mays, Tripp Mays and deacons of Bethel Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of her daughter on Nazarene Church Road.

VIRGINIA J. KENNERLY
GASTON — Virginia Johnson Kennerly, 65, died Friday, May 31, 2002.
Born in Watertown, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Claude Devanie Johnson Jr. and Helen Juanita Averitt Johnson. She retired from Kroger and was an organ donor.
Survivors include her daughter, Gina M. Kennerly of Gaston; son, Steven Douglas Kennerly of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Jane Sanford Winn of Groveland, Fla., and Claudette Trout of Harrissonburg, Va.; brothers, Bob Johnson of Cayce and Claude D. Johnson of West Columbia; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by a son, Mitchell Lynn Kennerly.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, with the Rev. William C. Cloer.
Entombment will follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Thompson Funeral Home.

LILLIAN P. LANE
Lillian Pergerson Lane, 80, widow of Roy Henry Lane, died Friday, May 31, 2002, in Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born Dec. 7, 1921, in Louisburg, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Henry Clay Pergerson and the late Ertie Roberson Pergerson. She attended Manning United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Madeline Lane of Manning; three sons, Roy Kenneth Lane of Raleigh, N.C., James Robert Lane of Vero Beach, Fla., and David Julien Lane of Manning; two sisters, Vivian P. Dickerson of Durham, N.C., and Carolyn P. Harmon of Mechanicsville, Va.; and 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday in Stephens Funeral Home chapel in Manning with the Rev. Ron Pettit officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Raleigh Memorial Park in Raleigh, N.C.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

JOHN W. MOORE
Retired Maj. John Wylie Moore, 71, U.S. Air Force, husband of Ann Mathis Moore, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Born Jan. 25, 1931, in Chester, he was a son of Susie Wade Moore and the late Alonzo Moore.
He was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church. He graduated from Chester High School and was an Eagle Scout. Later, he was accepted into the Corps of Cadets at Clemson University. Upon entering the Air Force after a year as civilian he was received a commission as a second lieutenant. He underwent undergraduate navigator training, and served his career as a flight bomber weapons system officer.
He flew B-57s from Shaw Air Force Base, Johnson AFB, Japan, Kunsan AB, Korea, and later served as an exchange officer with the Royal Australian Air Force. He also flew RB-66s from Shaw during the Cuban missile crisis. From 1966 to 1975, he served as a flight instructor for the RF-4C. From October 1972 to 1973, he flew combat missions in Vietnam, earning 12 Air Medals and two Distinguished Flying Crosses.
He was a member of the Jamil Shrine Temple in Columbia, the Sumter Elks Lodge No. 855, and the Sumter chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as the Exalted Ruler in 1979 and was a past District Deputy, Grand Exalted Ruler for the Eastern Region of South Carolina in 1981.
He was a co-founder of the Rimini Condo Owner’s association.
Survivors besides his wife and mother include two sons, Michael Moore and wife Beth of Columbia, and Mitchell Moore and wife Jamie of Dacula, Ga.; two daughters, Kathy Lowery and husband Steve of Sumter, and Lisa Mahoney and her husband Tom of Charlotte; two brothers, Joe Moore of Conover, N.C., and Jim Moore of Hendersonville, Tenn.; a half-brother, Bart Moore of Monticello, Ind.; and eight grandchildren, Nikki Green, Brandon Moore, Melissa Robertson, Blake Moore, Bryce Moore, John Austin Moore and Ashley Moore.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and other time at the home, 332 Stuckey St.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

LARRY BRIGGS
RIMINI — Larry Briggs, 45, died Thursday, May 20, 2002, at Elliott’s Landing, Rimini.
Born July 7, 1956, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Pernell and Camillia Briggs. He was a member of Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church and was educated in the public schools of Sumter County.
He was formerly employed at the Yuasa Exide Battery Co. He enjoyed fishing as a hobby.
Survivors besides his parents include two daughters, Kenetra Martin and Maheesha Martin of Rimini; two brothers, Pernell Briggs Jr. of Lamar, and Kenneth L. Briggs of Rimini; four sisters, Linda B. King and husband Wilber of Rimini, Georgia Mae Briggs of Hartford, Conn. Afelia Briggs and Beverly Briggs, both of Pinewood.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Greater St. Philip RMUE Church in Rimini with the Revs. Warren Hatcher, Amos Hatcher, Richard McKnight Jr., Earl Galloway and Dr. Sylvester Miott officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be former employees of Yusa Exide Battery Co.
The family will receive friends at the home of the parents, 1280 Emerald Drive, Rimini.
Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

JOHNNIE L. SMITH
Johnnie Landson “J.L.” Smith Sr., 75, widower of Sallie Lowery Smith, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born July 26, 1926, in the New Zion area of Clarendon county, he was a son of the late William Smith and the late Anna Bell Collins Hammett Smith and a stepson of the late Benjamin Hammett.
He was educated at Lodabar Parochial School and Good Will Parochial School. He was member of Friendship Presbyterian Church where he served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, trustee, deacon elder, financial church secretary and Presbyterian Men’s Organization. He was a retired farmer and barbecue chef.
Survivors include three sons, Johnnie L. Smith Jr. and wife Betty of New Zion, Alvin D. Smith and William L. Smith, both of the home; a grandson he raised, Mark Smith of Charlotte; and five daughters, Yvonne S. DeLotach of Baltimore, Md., Janice Smith of the home, Marcia S. Jones, Josephine C. Smith, both of Charlotte, and Jonell McFadden and husband Norrel of New Zion and one sister, Beatrice C. Cooper of Washington, D.C.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Lee and brother Bennie Hammett.
The remains will be placed in the church 9:30 a.m. Monday.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, at the Friendship Presbyterian Church U.S.A., Black River Road, New Zion. The Revs. Stanley W. Jones, I.B. Herbert, Carnell Hampton and Juenarrl Keith will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1301 Munn Drive, New Zion.

LYNCHBURG — John Ivory Anderson died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. He was a son of the late John Anderson Sr. and Annie Mae Kennedy Anderson. BISHOPVILLE — Rosetta Mickens, 83, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. She was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Lee County. She was a mother of James Mickens, June Dailey, O’Donnell Mickens and Cynthia York. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church in Bishopville. The family will receive friends at 506 Donald Davis Road, Bishopville. Boatwright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BISHOPVILLE — Mary Simon New, 78, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. She was born March 2, 1923, in Lee County. Survivors include a sister, Rosa S. Durant, and a niece, Sadie M. McDowell. The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, 50 John Wesley Road, Bishopville. Boatwright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

TURBEVILLE — John Bernard Cooper, 31, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Nov. 11, 1970, in New York City, he was a son of Sandra Cooper. He graduated from Bayside High School in New York City and was an interior decorator and landscaper. Survivors besides his mother include a brother, Michael Tyrone Cooper and his wife, Sandra, of Sumter; two foster brothers, Oneal Cooper and John Cooper, both of Gable; and an adopted brother, Celese McCants of Alcolu. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Melina Presbyterian Church (USA) in Gable, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The remains will be be placed in the church an hour before the service. The family will receive friends at the home, 1903 Plantation Village, Turbeville.
