JEANETTE T. GENTELE
Jeanette Truett Gentele, 59, wife of Edward L. Gentele, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late W.J. Truett and the late Roxie Mae Truett.
Mrs. Gentele was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and was business office manager for The Item.
Surviving besides her husband; one son, Edward Louie Gentele Jr. and his wife, Melanie; one daughter, Karen G. Kinsey and her husband, John, both of Sumter; one sister, Betty Watry and her husband, Phillip, of Hartsville; one brother, Harold Truett and his wife, Linda, of Sumter; four grandchildren, Britton and Michael Kinsey and Brook and Ashleigh Gentele, all of Sumter Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Scott Lowry and the Rev. James Thrower officiating.
Burial will follow in the Wells Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tony Watry, Nick Watry, Maynard Dorr, Rob Speed, Harry Truett and David Croft.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1350 Airport Road.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

VIOLA BOYD
BISHOPVILLE — Viola Boyd died March 13, 2003, at Carolina Pines, Hartsville.
The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Ann Holloman, 326 Kings Ave., Bishopville.
Services will be announced by Boatwright Funeral Home.

RUTHIE B. SPELLERS
Services for Ruthie B. Spellers will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Reid Chapel AME Church in Columbia with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Ms. Spellers will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. on Saturday for viewing. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge.
Ms. Spellers died Tuesday, March 11, 2003.
Surviving are a daughter, Debbie B. (Troy E.) Rivers of Columbia; grandchildren, Alex X. Brown, Troy E. Rivers Jr. and Shakenya M. Rivers, all of Columbia; sister, Jessie M. Bradley of Bishopville; brothers, Walter Bradley, Abner Bradley III, both of Bishopville, and Roland Bradley of Bronx, N.Y.; sisters-in-law, Minnie Bradley, Bernice I. Bradley, both of Bishopville, and Earnestine Bradley of Bronx; and brothers-in-law, John C. Bradley of Bishopville and George Moss of Columbia.

HELEN R. SHULER
MANNING — Helen Roark Shuler, 77, widow of Ira “Son” Shuler, formerly of Jamestown, died Friday, March 14, 2003, in Regency Hospital in Florence.
Born March 27, 1925, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., she was a daughter of the late George and Emma Roark. She attended Little White Church of Greeleyville.
Surviving are a son, the Rev. Rowland Shuler and wife, Linda, of Bennettsville; a daughter, Emma Ard and husband, Johnny, of Greeleyville; a brother, the Rev. Charles Roark of Camden; four grandsons, David Shuler, Maxie Shuler and wife, Shannon, John Ard and wife, Carey, Ricky Ard and wife, Dawn; three great-grandchildren, Briana and Shelby Ard and Aaron Shuler; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Eric Shuler will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Greeleyville.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the residence of Emma Ard, 2860 Manning Hwy., Greeleyville.
Memorials may be made to Little White Church, Greeleyville.
Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

MANNING — Willie Mood Blanding, 72, widower of Elouise Blanding, died March 14, 2003, at his residence.
The family will receive friends Monday at 1216 McDowell St., Manning, Red Hill community.
Services will be announced by Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning.

ELIZABETH J. ROBERTSON
MANNING — Elizabeth Juanita Gause Robertson, 81, widow of John Robertson, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, in Brian Center in Columbia.
Born Oct. 6, 1921, in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Claude DuRant Gause and the late Valera Dean West Gause. She was first married to the late Francis Edwards, was a retired restaurant manager, and a member of Santee Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Linda Connor of Columbia and Gladys Metzger of Bradenton, Fla.; a brother, John Gause of Bradenton, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Claudine Gause Robertson.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home. The Rev. Jimmy Eldreth will officiate. Burial will follow in Manning Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Santee Baptist Church, c/o Rev. Jimmy Eldreth, 1057 Davis St., Manning, S.C. 29102.

MANNING — Ruth Conyers Fulton, 82, widow of Eugene Fulton, died March 14, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning. She was born in Clarendon County.

Services will be announced by Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning.

JESSIE L. WOODS
Jessie L. Woods, 43, husband of Geraldine Phillips Woods, died March 14, 2003, at Tuomey Healthcare Systems.
Born Aug. 2, 1959, in Mayesville, Lee County, he was a son of the late Willie and Olivia Melton Woods.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary.

ALBERT YATES
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Albert Russell Yates, 62, husband of Evelina Green Yates, died March 4, 2003.
Born Aug. 29, 1940, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Susan Yates and Fred Dow. He was a long time member of Mt. Olive AME Church, Woodrow, S.C.
Survivors besides his loving wife, Evelina Green Yates of Brooklyn, N.Y., include a son, Clarence Yates of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a daughter, Helen Vaughn of Florida; a sister, Emma Y. Jackson of Dalzell; three grandchildren, Monique Vaughn, Katrina Vaughn and Chandella Houser.
He was preceded in death by three siblings, Mazarene Prescott, Clarence Yates and Doretha Dozier.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. today from the Mt. Olive AME Church, S.C. 441, Woodrow, with the Rev. Timothy A. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Colclough Cemetery, Sumter.
The funeral procession will leave at 2:20 p.m. from the home of Colclough Jackson, 39A Cannery Road, Dalzell.

Cornell Washington, husband of Beverly Washington, died at Tuomey Healthcare System, March 14, 2003.
The family will receive friends at the home, 395 Albert St., Sumter.

BETTY JHO LOWDER
Betty Jho Lowder, age 59, died on Friday, March 14, 2003, at her residence.
She was born in Sumter, a daughter of the late Clayton Ralph Lowder Sr. and Jho Eleanor Player Lowder. She was a cheerleader at Edmunds High School. She was a Sr. Superlative, being voted “wittiest.” She was formerly employed by Farmers Telephone where she climbed telephone poles for a living. She attended St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Jay Rowland and his wife, Jacquelyn Maria, of Sumter; two daughters, Kimberly Shawn Hobgood and her husband, Garland, of Columbia and Alice Page Sirois and her husband, Gregory, of Mont Verde, Fla.; two brothers, Clayton Lowder Jr. and Jimmy Lowder, both of Sumter; one sister, Alice Lowder Robertson of Sumter; nine grandchildren, John Preston Rowland, Wyatt Duke Rowland, Rachelle Breanne Lawrence, Ryan Curtis Lawrence, John Ashton Hobgood, McKayla Hope Hobgood, Hunter Garland Hobgood, Chelsea Lee Sirois and Dakota Jho Sirois. Also survived by a special cousin, Martha Lowder Sturgeon.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bruce Sayre officiating.
A visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her sister, Alice Lowder Robertson.
Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or a memorial of one’s choice.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

JULUIS DUKES Sr.
MANNING — Juluis “Preacher” Dukes Sr., 78, husband of Vernice Tomlin Dukes, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at 302 Canal St., Manning.
Born March 8, 1925, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Bungie Dukes and Mary Simon Dukes.
The family will receive friends at his residence, 302 Canal St., Manning. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC.

KENNY MARTIN
RIMINI — Kenny Martin, 26, died March 14, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born March 6, 1977, he was a son of Henry and Dorothy West Martin.
The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, 11589 Camp McBoykin Road, Rimini.
Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

LOTTIE J. NORMAND
Lottie J. Normand, 83, widow of John C. Normand, died March 14, 2003, at her residence, 1074 Boulevard Road, Sumter.
Born Nov. 28, 1919, in Richmond, Va., she was a daughter of the late Walter E. Johnson and Marie Byrd Johnson.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1074 Boulevard Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

ALBERTA H. STEVENS
Alberta Harrison Stevens, age 65, of Knightsville, Ind., died at 2:55 a.m., March 13, 2003, at Methodist Hospital, in Indianapolis.
She was born on Feb. 26, 1938, in Clay County, the daughter of Joe and Dorothy Parr Harrison. On July 24, 1979, she married Gale Stevens in Brazil, he survives. She was previously employed at Mallory’s in Greencastle, Metz Lunch and was the first woman foreman at Great Dane. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed racing of all kind with Dale Earnhardt as her favorite. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joe Harrison; a son, Danny Joe Hadley; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Harrison.
Survivors include her husband, Gale; mother, Dorothy Harrison; a daughter, Lori Brown and husband, Bill; two grandchildren, Lacey and Kyle; three brothers, Jack Harrison and wife, Marilyn, Larry Harrison and wife, Emma, and Darrell Harrison and wife, Carol; five sisters, Marlyn Wolf and husband, Muretsel, Diana Pearce and husband, Tom, Brenda Godsey and husband, Dick, Terri Clodfelter, and Cathy Traverse and husband, Brian; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Lawson-Slack Funeral Home, Brazil, Ind., with services Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Paul Zurcher officiating.
Burial will be at Calcutta Cemetery.

DIANNE McLEOD
LYNCHBURG - Sylvia Dianne McLeod, 54, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Camden, she was a daughter of the late Norman C. McLeod and Doris Peake McLeod Hornsby.
She was a member of Lynchburg Baptist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Shannon McLeod Shirah of Lynchburg; three brothers, Ream Hornsby Jr. and Jasper Hornsby, both of Lynchburg, and Jimmy Hornsby of Seneca; one sister, Marilyn McLeod Collins of Sumter; one grandchild, Kayla Shirah.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Lynchburg Baptist Church.
Burial will follow in Lynchburg Presbyterian Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 44 Griffin St., Lynchburg.
