LILLIE MAE MERRITT DAVIS
BISHOPVILLE - Lillie Mae Merritt Davis, 93, widow of Jasper J. Davis, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at a local nursing center.
Born in Fort Mill, she was a daughter of the late John Newell Merritt and Bessie Lindsay Merritt.
She was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Dollie M. Thigpen and her husband, Edward M. Thigpen of Sumter, and Louise Watson of Bishopville; seven grandchildren, James E. Thigpen of Mt. Pleasant, Allan D. Thigpen and Jeffrey M. Thigpen, both of Sumter, Len Watson of Lydia, Rhonda A. Hodge and Nancy Wilson, both of Bishopville, and Jackie Buckner of Dalzell; ten great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Merritt, and two sisters, Ruth Tidwell and Ola Gladden.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. B.R. Wallace and the Rev. Jason Wilson officiating.
Burial will be in the Ashwood Baptist Church Cemetery.
Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home of Louise Watson.
Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

HENRY T. SHUMAKER
Henry T. Shumaker, 87, husband of Alice M. Shumaker, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at home. Born in Creston, he was a son of the late Henry J. Shumaker and Mary Ella Smith Shumaker.
He was a member of Southside Baptist Church and was retired from Sumter Machinery after 38 years of service.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years of Sumter; seven daughters, Edith S. Bates and her husband, Bob, Agnes S. Romatzick and her husband, Richard, Joyce S. Davis, Anne S. DeLong and her husband, Richard, and Faye S. Nunnery, all of Sumter, Thomasine S. Price and her husband Hugh Sr. of Pelzer, Doris Ashworth and her husband Tony of Winnsboro; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Robert A. Bates Jr. and Thomas Lloyd Bates.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson and Rev. Lynn Gardner officiating.
Burial will follow in the Sumter Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Harry A. Davis IV, William P. Davis, Hugh Price Jr., Joe Price, Jasper Price, Billy Shumaker, Le Huggins and Chris Edens.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Men of Southside Baptist Church, Sumter Machinery employees, members of the Millaree Hunting Club, members of the Kingsville Hunting Club, Dr. Lea Givens and Dr. Phil Brandt.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 390 Mims Road.
Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church or to a charity of one’s choice.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

JULIUS “PREACHER” DUKES SR.
MANNING - Julius “Preacher” Dukes Sr., 80, husband of Vernice “Doll Baby” Tomlin Dukes, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at his home in Manning.
Born in the Greeleyville section of Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Bungy Dukes Sr. and Mary Simon Dukes. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of Reeseville AME Church, Alcolu, serving on the male chorus and he was Father of the Church. He started a shoe repair shop in Sumter, then he relocated to Manning and the last 47 years as owner of Dukes & Son Shoe Shop & Real Estate Enterprises.
He was survived by a son, Julius (Josephine) Dukes Jr. of Manning; three daughters, Mary Ann King, Louvenia (Ingram) Brunson, both of Manning and Carrie Lee (Odie) Stewart of Marrietta, Ga.; a sister, Ella Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Moses, Wallace, and Dungy Jr. and three sisters; Reatha Robinson, Carrie Daniels and Since Dukes.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mulberry Missionary Baptist Church, U.S. 521 in Sumter.
The Rev. Dr. O.S. Scott, pastor, and the Rev. Marie Harvin are officiating, assisted by elder Carnell Dukes, the Rev. Rufus Gaymon, the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, the Rev. Gerald Tomlin and minister Melvin Chaney.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. for viewing until the hour of service.
Burial will be in Reeseville AME Church Cemetery.
Both pallbearers and floral bearers will be Reeseville and Mulberry Church Families.
The family will receive friends at his residence, 302 Canal St. in Manning.
Samuels Funeral Home, LLC, of Manning, is in charge of the arrangements.

CECIL EMMETT DAYSON
Cecil Emmett Dayson, 82, husband of Ivy M. James Dayson, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 10, 1930 in Jamaica, N.Y., he was a son of the late Emmett Dayson and Hortense Murray Dayson. He was a faithful member of Second Presbyterian Church (USA). He attended high school in New York. He was a graduate of Hampton Institute in Virginia. Further studies were done at the University of New York, Long Island University and City College of New York. He was also a World War II veteran, a Master Mason of Samson Lodge No. 65 and a life member of the NAACP. He was employed as a supervisor for Municipal City Parks of New York for 20 years. After retiring, he and his wife relocated to Sumter. He was very active within the community.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Michele Dayson of the home; and a brother, Vernon Dayson of New York.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Second Presbyterian Church (USA) in Sumter. The Rev. Julia A. Prince, pastor, is officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. R.E. Bligen, the Rev. Emma Thompson, the Rev. W.S. Randolph, the Rev. Dr. Franklin Colclough, and elder Frances Singleton.
The remains will be placed in the church at noon.
Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be the Presbyterian Men.
Floral bearers will be the deacons and the Usher Board.
The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from his home, 35 Wright St. The family will also receive friends at the home.
Williams Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

LOUISE PALMER HILTON
WALNUT, CALIF. - Louise Palmer Hilton, 94, widow of Ferdinand Hilton Jr., died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at her home.
Born in the Summerton Community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late James Palmer and Janie Livingston Palmer.
Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton.

CHESTER YEATTS THOMAS
Chester Yeatts Thomas, 79, widower of Crystal Rorrer Thomas of Englewood, Florida died Saturday, March 15, 2003 at the National Healthcare in Sumter, SC.
He was born, July 26th, 1923, in the Charity community of Patrick County Virginia. He was the 4th child of the late Tom Thomas and Minnie Nolen Thomas.
He was retired following 35 years service from E. I. Dupont deNemours and Co’s Martinsville Nylon Plant. He was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Englewood, Florida. He also frequently attended Mount Bethel United Methodist Church when he visited in Martinsville, Virginia.
He was a member of the VFW. He was honorably discharged from the US Army following service in the European Theatre during WWII.
Surviving are one daughter, Donna Thomas Shields and husband Bill of Martinsville, VA; one son, Stacy Brian Thomas and wife Sonya of Martinsville, VA; three stepdaughters, Janet Sharp and husband Frank of Martinsville, VA; Debra Harris Kaye and husband Harvey of Kaneohe, HI, and Karen Harris-Sweetman and husband Mark of Sumter, SC; one sister, Esther Thomas Elgin of Collinsville, Va., nine grandchildren, Billy Shields, Michelle Harris, Hope Lambert, Joey Kaye, Todd Thomas Cox, Tara Thomas Cox, Tori Thomas, Charlie Kaye, and Ryan Thomas; and one great-grandchild, Mattie Lambert.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, parents, a son, Dale Thomas; a stepson, Edward Lee Harris, Jr.; three sisters, Bessie Thomas Jones, Weda Thomas Hall, and Ora Thomas and one grandchild, Robert Trent.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Collins-McKee Funeral Home Chapel in Bassett, VA. There will be a celebration of life service held at Community Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden in Englewood, FL later in the week where his ashes will be interred.
The family will receive friends at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home prior to the service and at other times at the residence.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to: Community Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden, 401 South McColl Road, Englewood, FL 34223 or Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, 63 Mount Bethel Church Circle, Martinsville, VA 24112.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements.

LARRY G. WOODCOCK SR.
Larry Gene Woodcock Sr., age 57, husband of four years to Carlette Pack Woodcock, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Maxton-Laurinburg, N.C., he was a son of Ruby Lee Conyers Woodcock and the late Troy Curtis Woodcock. He was employed by Telerent Leasing of Raleigh, N.C. He was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church where he was a saxophone player for the church worship team.
Survivors besides his wife and mother are two sons, Larry Gene Woodcock Jr. and Ralph Phillip Woodcock Jr., both of Sumter; two daughters, Cynthia Gene Woodcock of Pawleys Island and Edith LeAnne Woodcock of Sumter; three stepsons, Mitchell Morris Jr. of Turbeville, Greg Morris of Sumter and Darren Morris of Columbia; a brother, Ralph Philip Woodcock of Morrisville, N.C.; two sisters, Wetona Woodcock Warren of Raleigh and Rachel Woodcock Norris of Benson, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Tiffany, Amanda, Gregory, Kirstin, and Ryan Morris.
He was preceded in death by his father, his first wife, Nancy Bartlette Woodcock, and a brother, Troy Curtis Woodcock Jr.
Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Sanders and Dr. Harold Green officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Aysue, Dale Bradshaw, Russell Elmore, Keith Hodge, Frank Shivers and Joe Vasura.
Memorials may be made to the Lakewood Baptist Church, Nazarene Church Road, Sumter, SC 29150.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

JEFFREY D. JONES
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Jeffrey Darryl Jones, 31, husband of Claudia McDonald Jones, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at South Fulton Medical Center due to complications following an outpatient surgery.
Born Oct. 19, 1971, in Sumter, he was a son of Mr. Lee Earnest Franklin and Mrs. Connie Diane Jones. He was a 1989 graduate of Manning High School and after moving to Atlanta, Ga., he attended DeVry Institute. Jeffrey was an active member of the St. James Lodge No. 14, Prince Hall Affiliation in Atlanta, where he was a 32nd degree mason. He also held memberships in the Atlanta Consistory No. 24 and the Nabbar Temple No. 128 A.E.A.N.O.M.S. At a young age, he joined Westminister Presbyterian Church in Alcolu and faithfully attended the Victory Baptist Church after moving to Atlanta.
Survivors besides his wife include, a son, Joshua Darren “J.D. Jr.” Jones; a daughter, Aishah Danielle Jones; four brothers, Derrick Lamont, Rodney Dingle, Tyrone Bowman and Kenneth Frierson; three stepchildren, Andre Scott, Oraine Scott and Gabrielle Scott; a maternal grandmother, Flossie Jones-Delaney and her husband, David; and a paternal grandmother, Lillie Francis.
A wake service will be held from 6 to 9 tonight at the Wages and Sons Funeral Home in Stone Mountain.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Alcolu.
Community Funeral Home of Sumter is handling local services.

PAMELA GREGG
Miss Pamela Gregg, 29, passed away Monday, March 17, 2003, at North Western Street in Sumter.
Born March 1, 1974, she was a daughter of Mrs. Mattie Gregg and Mr. Harold Gregg.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the home, 237 Clement Street.
Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

KENNY L. MARTIN
RIMINI — Kenny L. Martin, 26, passed away Friday, March 14, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born March 6, 1977, in Sumter County, he was a son of Mr. Henry P. Martin Sr. and Mrs. Dorothy West Martin.
He attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Lakewood High School. He was employed by V.B. Williams Furniture Company.
Survivors besides his parents are three brothers, Keith Martin and his wife, Wendy, and Kelvin Martin, all of Rimini, and Henry Pontie Martin Jr. and his wife, Dana, of Sumter; and a sister, Karalene M. Robinson and her husband, James, of Sumter.
The remains will be available for viewing at noon Wednesday, March 19.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Antioch AME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the home of his parents, 11589 Camp McBoykin Road in Rimini.
Community Funeral Home is handling these services.

CAROLYN G. MILLER
RIVERVIEW, Fla. — Carolyn Garrett Miller, 59, was received into the hands of the Lord on Sunday, March 16, 2003, after a long illness.
Born in Arlington, Va., on May 17, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Willard and Virginia Garrett and a widow of Vernon Dean Miller of Tampa, Fla., after being married 29 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn V. Miller of Riverview and Deanna M. Coile and her husband, William, of Lakeland. She was blessed with three grandsons, Matthew Todd Glenn, Nicholas Dean Coile and Christopher Robert Coile. Mrs. Miller is also survived by two brothers, Harry Garrett and his wife, Lois, of New Market, Va., and Roger Garrett and his wife, Luann, of Zebulon, N.C.; three sisters, Mary Harvey and her husband, Clint, of Amherst, Va., Eleanor Harvey of Sumter and Linda Odom and her husband, Marvin, of Hartsville; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Mrs. Miller, a 1961 graduate of Chamberlain High School, was the principal secretary at Tampa Baptist Academy (Spencer Memorial) for 10 years. She carried a lifelong love of children into establishing Berry Patch Kids, a children’s boutique in Plant City.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 tonight at Stowers Funeral Home in Brandon, Fla. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Florida National Cemetery. In lieu of flower contributions may be made to H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Research or LifePath Hospice.

LOTTIE V. NORMAND
Lottie Vera Normand, 83, widow of John Normand, died at her home Friday, March 14, 2003.
Born Nov. 28, 1919, in Richmond, Va., she was a daughter of the Walter E. “Papa” and Marie Byrd Johnson.
She accepted Christ at an early age at the First African Baptist Church. She grew up in a loving family community in Historic Jackson Ward, where she was educated and graduated from Armstrong High School in 1936. After receiving her bachelor of science degree from Virginia Union University, she taught for 17 years. In 1966, she relocated to Sumter, where she joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. She received her master’s degree in 1976 from the University of South Carolina. She taught in Sumter School District 17 until she retired in 1983. After retirement, she taught adult education and was recognized locally and nationally as a caring teacher, who challenged, encouraged and believed in and loved her students. She was a member of the YWCA, PTSA, USC and Morris College Alumni, Senior Citizens groups (Resource Center and Delaine). She was proud to be a member of these organizations, along with Guardian ad litem and church organizations. She was affectionately known as “Gammie” by her grandchildren and their friends and “Auntie” by her many nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda N. White of Sumter, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Emily Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a son, Clay Normand.
The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Walker officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1074 Boulevard Road in Sumter.
Job’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
