BISHOPVILLE — Melvinee Harrell Nickelson, widow of Elder Arthur Warren Nickelson, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in Sumter County from injuries sustained in an accident.
Born in Dallas, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Harrell Sr. and Helen Mae Harrell. Mrs. Nickelson attended Pasadena High School and Pasadena City College in Pasadena, Calif. Earlier in life, she was a secretary at Standard Register Co. and was owner of Mel’s Day Care Center. She attended the House of Prayer of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Church.
Survivors include a son, Minister Karl Lance (Angela) Evans of Sumter; a stepson, Johnny (Jean) Nickelson of Los Angeles, Calif.; three daughters, Heidi (Roland) Sprewell of Pasadena, Calif., Gerri Paula Brown of Clarkston, Ga. and Nikki Warrenette Nickelson of Nashville, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Barbara Nichols of Los Angeles, Calif. and Artis (Allen) White of Temple Hills, Md.; a special niece reared as her daughter, Patricia Akison (Ellis) Kitchen of Pasadena; two brothers, Wesley Harrell of Pasadena and Benjamin Harrell Jr. of Arizona; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leon K. Hawkins and Wilbert Harrell.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church, Sumter. Burial will be in Boone Memorial Gardens in the Browntown Community of Lee County.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
Visitations will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the mortuary.
The family will receive friends at 11 S. Salem St.

NORMAN O. SMITH
Norman Oscar Smith, 68, husband of Florence Raye Smith, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Corning, N.Y., he was a son of the late James Z. Smith and Isabelle Hatter Smith. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, the Cuban Conflict and the Korean War and retired as a sergeant. He later worked with Civil Service in the maintenance department at Shaw Air Force Base. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his wife include, a daughter, Valeria Ann Smith Gilbert and her husband, Staff Sgt. Steven Gilbert, of Ramstein, Germany; two sisters, Shirley Totten of Houghton Lake Heights, Mich., and Jeanette Bartlette of Phoenix, Ariz., and a grandchild, Raven Raye Gilbert.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be held Monday, March 24, at the Florence National Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Hamp Benenhaley, Lynn Benenhaley, Vernon Buckner, LeRoy Howard, Jimmy Mood and Ken Ray.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

James Lee Thrower Sr., 76, husband of Ruth Bynum Thrower, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at his home.
Born April 24, 1926, in Orangeburg County, he was a son of the late Alex C. Thrower and Jannie Thompson Thrower.

Joshua McFadden, 69, died Monday, March 17, 2003, in Baltimore, Md.
Born May 15, 1933, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Felix and Annie Davis McFadden.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the Congruity Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Gable. The Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr., pastor, will be officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Lucinda Colclough, 127 Lincoln Ave., Sumter.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Willie Mae Woods Gibbons Mickens, 81, widow of Forreston Gibbons and Earnest Mickens, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at Providence Hospital.
Born in Richmond, Va., she was a daughter of the late Willie and Harriet McFadden Woods. She was a member of Thankful Baptist Church in Washington.
Survivors include four sons, Clifton Gibbons and his wife, Maggie, and Clarence Carlthon, all of Washington, Foreston Gibbons Jr. and his wife, Dorothy, of Hyattsville, Md., and Micah Mustafa of Sumter; and three daughters, Harrolee Gibbons of Irving, Texas, Rhonda Gibbons and Patricia Pierce, both of Washington.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Edith V. Carlton and a son, Theodore R. Gibbons (Peter Gunn).
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, March 22, at Thankful Baptist Church with Pastor Darnell Thompson officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon at 5060 Jay St. in Washington.

Elder Nickelson was the senior elder of the House of Prayer of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Church, Sumter. He was a brick mason for many years and owned a trash route in Charles County, Md. and later a maintenance business in Los Angeles, Calif.
Survivors include a son, Johnny MacArthur (Jean) Nickelson of Los Angeles; a stepson, Minister Karl Lance (Angela) Evans of Sumter; three daughters, Barbara Jean Nichols of Los Angeles, Artis Jean (Allen) White of Temple HIlls, Md., and Nikki Warrenette Nickelson of Nashville, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Heidi (Roland) Sprewell of Pasadena, Calif., and Gerri Paula Brown of Clarkston, Ga.; three sisters, Louise Chapman of Columbia, Bernice Hinton of Bronx, N.Y., and Eloise Cooke of Philadelphia, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Katie Bell Williams.

Born Nov. 28, 1934, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Martin Golds and Willie Mae Williams.

Uther Pringle-Harrison, 48, wife of Willie Harrison Sr. died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at her home on Brand Street.
Born Dec. 25, 1954, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Bessie Scarborough Pringle and the late John L. Pringle Sr. At an early age, she joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter and graduated from Sumter High School in 1973. She later attended Congruity Holiness Church in Sumter County.
Survivors besides her husband and mother, include three sons, Rico Pringle of Petersburg, Va., Roderick (Charlene) Pringle-Harrison and Willie Harrison Jr., all of Sumter; a daughter, Lashauna Harrison-Allen of Petersburg; six brothers, Charles Pringle and Henry (Marilyn) Pringle, all of Queens, N.Y., John (Lourine) Pringle Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., Joe Lane Pringle, Kenneth Pringle and Chico (Lelia) Pringle, all of Sumter; two sisters, Rosa Witherspoon of Queens and Ilie Belle (Vernell) Conyers of Sumter; eight grandchildren, five aunts, two uncles, a host of nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Johnnie Mae, Mary Louise, Julia and Bertha.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 24, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton officiating, assisted by Minister Irene Anthony and the Rev. Willie Wilson and the Rev. Ricky Simmons. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

Born in Eatonton, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Thomas P. Beale and the late Mary Blizzard Beale. Miss Beale was a member of Adgateville Baptist Church.
Surviving are two nephews, Dr. Phil Cook of Sumter and Rembert Beale of Macon, Ga.; three nieces, Ann Bishop of Rockledge, Fla., Laverne Bohleber of Waynesville, N.C. and Lynn Stewart of Atlanta, Ga.

MANNING - Joe Wade "J.W." Miles, 66, husband of Ella Hodge Miles, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at his home.
Born May 3, 1936, in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Joe Edward and Eliza Barfield Miles. He was a retired machine operator at Cooper Tools in Sumter, and was a member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving besides his wife of Manning include a son, Jamie Tucker of Manning; five daughters, JoAnn Revis, Debbie Lee, Tammy Matthews, and Sandra McGee, all of Lake City, and Fran Hyman of Timmonsville; a brother, Dale Miles of Charleston; three sisters, Myrtle Lee Parker of Lake City, Willa Dean Robinson of Kingstree and Eloise Tarte of Myrtle Beach; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 23, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Bennie Turner will officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ray Barfield. Burial will follow in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Julia Isaac McFadden, 75, widow of William McFadden Sr., died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Halifax Medical Center.
Born June 15, 1927, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Dolphis and Emma Ceaser Isaac. She received her formal education from the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Mount Nebo Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, William McFadden and his wife, Vermel, of Manning and Tony McFadden and his wife, Laquanda, of Sumter; two daughters, Emma Lyons and Frances Dinkins and her husband, Charles, all of Daytona Beach; a brother, William Calvin; three sisters, Mary Lee Wells, Mariah Daniels and Bessie Calvin; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Lee Isaac; a daughter, Mary A. McFadden and six grandchildren.
The remains will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. today.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Mount Nebo Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Brock officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joe Lewis Glassco, Warnobia Abraham, Richard Beckman and Albert Nelson.
