BRADENTON, Fla. - Jennie L. Warren Bass Logsdon, 72, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Blake Medical Center.
She was born June 28, 1930, in Sumter. She moved to Manatee County from Kissimmee, Fla., in 1970, where she worked as a receptionist at Freedom Village. She was of the Protestant faith and was a member of the Ladies of the Moose, Manasota Elks Lodge. She was an avid darts player, enjoyed crafting and was bargain hunter.
Survivors include two sons, Earl Bass of Bradenton and Joseph Logsdon of South Carolina; three daughters, Earline Leiss of Kingston, Ark., Charla J. Onderko of Waterford, Mich., and Amie M. Logsdon of Atlanta, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Griffith-Cline Funeral Home in Manasota Chapel.
Visitation was held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Finney Pointe Cemetery in Kissimmee Park, Fla., with the Rev. Bob Reaves officiating.

ORANGEBURG - Services for Rev. Calvin Earl Harris of 1160 Woodbine Drive, will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Francis Burns United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made to Rev. Calvin Earl Harris Memorial Fund, 1160 Woodbine Drive, Orangeburg, SC.
Rev. Harris died Sunday, March 16, 2003. Born in Cowpens, he was a son of the late Horace Franklin and Dorline Bowman Harris. He was actively serving the Rowesville Parish, comprised of Central, Mays Chapel and Prospect United Methodist Churches until the decline of his health. He was a former pastor of Allen Chapel and Florence Chapel United Methodist Church in Spartanburg.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Carter-Harris; children, Noel Kent Harris, Alicia Colette Harris, Mitchell Lamar Burney, Lexington Earl Harris II and Camille Frierson; a brother, Minfred Ming of Spartanburg; a sister, Dreamer Clemmons of Clifton; and grandchildren, Mitchell Lamar Burney II, Phaedra Marie Harris-Smith, Megan Arielle McCullough, Jada Noel Ballard, Leona Michelle Burney and TyJuan Damaje Frierson.

MANNING - Wilbur Cooper Sr., 69, widower of Gertrude "Granny" Gamble Cooper, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 7, 1933, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Sallie Reardon Brunson and the late Willie Cooper. He was reared by his grandparents, the late Professor Lucious Cooper and Moriah Cooper.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1445 527 Subdivision in New Zion.

LOUISE P. HILTON
WALNUT, Calif. — Louise Palmer Hilton, 94, widow of Ferdinand D. Hilton, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at her residence.
Born Aug. 31, 1908, in the Summerton community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late James Palmer and Jannie Livingston Palmer.
She was a graduate of Scotts Brach High School. In her youth, she was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church. After moving to New York, she joined St. James Presbyterian, where she remained for several years. Later, she moved her membership to Church of the Master. She was a seamstress at J.C. Mailie & Co. for many years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of ILGWU.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann L. Palmer Johnson of Walnut; a sister, Jannie Smythe McCoy of Miami, Fla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, a son and a grandson.
The family will receive friends today at the funeral home, 23 S. Duke St., from 4-7 p.m.
The casket will be placed in the church at noon Monday.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. at historic Liberty Hill A.M.E. Church, the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be men of the church and friends of the family.
Floral bearers will be members of the stewardess board and friends of the family.
The funeral procession will leave 12:30 p.m. from the home of her nephew, James E. Palmer, 2001 Lula Road in Summerton.
The family will receive friends at the home the nephew and other times at the home of her niece, Mazie Adger, 1140 Tisdale St. in Summerton.

ALCOLU — Louise Smith Wells, 89, widow of Earl Wells, died Friday, March 21, 2003, in Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.
Born April 3, 1913, in Gallipolis, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late John and Bellva Limbley Smith. She was a retired hotel manager in Miami, Fla., and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Manning.
Surviving are a son, Donald J. Baker and wife, Pearl, of Rutledge, AL; and four grandchildren.
Private funeral services will be held at a later date.

McIVER CAMERON
LAKE CITY — McIver “Boot” Cameron, 79, husband of Ollie Mae Davis Cameron of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at McLeod Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 22, 1924, in Lake City, he was a son of the late Douglas and Viney Singletary Cameron.
He was a printer assistant, truck driver and member of St. Joseph Masonic Lodge No. 450.
Survivors beside his wife include two sons, Norman Cameron and Jefferson Cameron, both of New York; a daughter, Queen Ester Swann of Farmingdale, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at New Zion Baptist Church on Old Georgetown Road in Lake City, the Rev. J. J. Wilson officiating.
Burial will be in Cameron Cemetery in the Camerontown community of Lake City.

RICHARD P. MOORE
PENDLETON — Richard Perry Moore, 68, of 528 S. Mechanic St., died Friday. He was a native of Pelzer, son of the late Walter Lewis and Mary McCall Moore. He was a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel having served for 22 years. He was a 1956 graduate of Clemson University, was a member of First Baptist Church of Pendleton and was a member of the Pendleton Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife, Myrna Talley Moore of the home; sons Alan Moore of Sumter, Darryl Moore of Laurens and Warren Moore of Senoia, Ga.; daughter Karen Taylor of Union, Miss.; brother Earl M. (Mac) Moore of Powdersville; and 14 grandchildren.

Shirley Nucich Evenich, 66, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Tuomey Healthcare Systems.
Shirley was born in Kenilworth, Utah, a daughter of the late Joseph Nucich and the late Angelina and Edward C. Zorn. She was of the Catholic faith and was a loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving are two sons, Charles J. Evenich and wife, Jayne, and Patrick D. Evenich and wife, Debbie, all of Sumter; two daughters, Deborah E. Shade and husband, Joseph, of Dalzell, and Charlene Evenich Thompson and husband, Kenneth, of Jacksonville, Fla; two sisters, Joanne Lessar of Price, Utah, and Margie Duzenak of Wellington, Utah; six grandchildren, Tiffany Apgar, Robbie Christmas, Brandon Shade, Shane Evenich, Keith Coker and Charles Evenich, Jr.; four great grandchildren; and two very special friends, Teresa Martin and Mary Miller.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2003, in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harold Waynick, Jr. officiating.

JAMES L. THROWER Sr.
James Lee Thrower Sr., the sixth of seven children, was born to Mr. Alexander C. and Mrs. Janie Thompson-Thrower on April 24, 1926 in Orangeburg County. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter and from high school he was drafted into the military, where he served for two years in the U.S. Army during World War II. His time of duty included time spent in Japan.
After the military, he matriculated at Morris College, where he received a bachelor of science degree in social studies. He taught for one year in the Cartersville community. He decided that the classroom was not his chosen vocation.
His other working experience included insurance for a while. After insurance, he become a chef at the Elk's Club. Then, Campbell Soup came to town.
He worked untiringly there for 24 years until his retirement on Feb. 1, 1991. After his retirement from Campbell Soup, playing checkers became his full-time job. He was a founding member of the Atlantic Avenue Checker Club, where he served as financial officer for many years. He was also a long-time member of the American Legion Post No. 202.
On Feb. 3, 1957, he was united in holy matrimony with Ruth Bynum. To his union four sons were born: James Lee Thrower Jr., Sidney Cornell Thrower, David Bernard Thrower Sr. and Fredrick Leonardo Thrower Sr. They celebrated 46 years of marriage this year.
James Lee joined Mount Pisgah during his youth and became active in the church activities. During his adult years, he served as church clerk, joined the Royal Usher Board, a Sunday school teacher and also a member of the Steward Board.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Albert Thrower; his mother, Mrs. Janie Thompson-Thrower; his father, Mr. Alexander C. Thrower; two sisters, Willa Mae Thrower and Mrs. Molly Porter and a son, Sidney C. Thrower.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of the home; three sons, James Lee Thrower Jr. and his wife, Sandra; David Thrower and his wife, Ruby, all of Sumter; and Fredrick Thrower and his wife Priscilla of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Willie Thrower and Charlie Lee of the Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Anna Nelson of New York City and Amanda Jones and her husband, Eddie, of Sumter; a host of nieces, nephews and innumerable other relatives and friends.
Services will be held noon Tuesday at Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Church, with the Rev. Juenarral Keith, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Darryl Davids. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.Pallbearers will be American Legion Post 202. Flower bearers will be Missionary and Stewardesses of Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Church.
The funeral procession will leave the home, 614 S. Harvin St., at 11:30 a.m. The family is receiving friends at the home.

JERLEAN K. BENJAMIN
BISHOPVILLE -- Jerlean K. Benjamin, widow of Harry Benjamin, died Thursday night, March 20, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of Mrs. Lucile Murphy King and the late Prince King Sr.She attended the public schools of Lee County and was employed by Lee County Memorial Hospital for 23 years, where she retired. In her early age, she joined St. Mark Baptist Church; she later changed her membership to Elizabeth Baptist Church, where she served faithfully with the Usher's Ministry, the Gospel Choir, former President of the Missionary Ministry and the Pastor's Aide Ministry.
She was a chartered member of Benjamin Chapter No. 346 Order of the Eastern Stars.
Surviving are her mother, Lucile M. King of Bishopville; one son, Harry Benjamin Jr. of the home; one daughter, Lucile Thomas and her husband, Levern, of Bishopville; three grandchildren, Meliakia M. Ford and her husband, Keith, Cornelius Terrell McPherson and Philip Austin Thomas, all of Bishopville; one great-grandson, Kenelius Malik Ford; two sisters, Rosa Williams of Bishopville and Mary Holloman of Rahway, N.J.; three brothers, Boyd King and his wife, Patricia, and Prince King Jr., all of Bishopville and James King and his wife, Queenie, of Hillside, N.J.; two step-grandchildren, Patrick Thomas and his wife, Easter, of Clarksville, Tenn., and Donovan Thomas and his wife, Trina, of Irmo; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elizabeth Baptist Church, Highway 34, Bishopville, with the Rev. Vernon Holland presiding. Assisting ministers are the Rev. Richard Addison, Elder Nathaniel Dixon, the Rev. Willie T. Lee and the Rev. Stanley Hayes.

Jimmie Golden Jr., 68, husband of Alberetta Golden, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Tuomey Healthcare Systems.
Born Nov. 28, 1934 in Sumter, he was a son of the late Martin Golds and Willie Mae Williams.
He attended the public schools of Sumter. He served in the United States Air Force. He was employed with the Quality Heating and Air Conditioning and Hatfield Heating and Air Conditioning. He also worked as a custodian at St. Frances Xavier High School and St. Jude Enrichment Center.
Survivors beside his wife include three sons, Jimme Golden Sr. and his wife, Cynthia, Reginald Golden and Tyrone Lowery, all of Sumter; a step-son, William Walker of Sumter; four daughters, Jacqueline L. Golden of Sumter, Loretta Golden Ellis and her husband, Donald, of El Paso, Tex., and Terrie Golden Crawford and her husband, Jimmie, and Yolanda Golden White and her husband, Billy, all of Sumter; four step-daughters, Tanesha Walker of Ft. Jackson and Nyland Stokes, Carmen Stokes and April Stokens, all of Sumter; three brothers, Martin Golds of Goldsboro, N.C., Henry Tindal of Philadelphia, and Richard Reese of Sumter; six sisters, Shirley A. Durante of Washington, D.C., Barbara J. Williams of Charlotte, Wilhemina Reese, Martha Reese and Henrietta Brown, all of Sumter, and Betty Jean Reese of Wheaton, Md.; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one special granddaughter reared in the home, LaToya T.
