BISHOPVILLE — Louise E. Brown, 86, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at a local nursing center.
Born in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Edward R. Peach and the late Ruby Horton Peach.
Mrs. Brown was a Presbyterian and a retired farmer.
Surviving are two daughters, Claudette E. Collins and her husband, Gary, of Bishopville and Katie E. Smart of Lillington, N.C; three sons, Claude S. Elmore and his wife, Susan F., John B. Kelley and his wife, Ann T., of Bishopville, and Clarence A. Elmore and his wife, Jean G., of Hartsville; two sisters, Mary Peach Smith of Camden and Jeanette Peach Gardner of Kershaw; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Clarence A. Elmore officiating. Burial will follow in Piedmont Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home and other times at 361 Elmore Road in Bishopville.

MANNING — Moses McDuffie, 78, widower of Sarah Hilton McDuffie, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at his home.
Born Jan. 2, 1925, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Doc McDuffie and Hennie Huggins McDuffie.
The family will receive friends at the home, 101 Richburg St. in Manning.

PHILADELPHIA — Selena “Lena” Bennett Roberson, 70, wife of Benjamin Roberson Sr., died Monday, March 24, 2003, at her home.
Born May 22, 1932, in the Jordan community of Manning, she was a daughter of the late Susan and Arthur Bennett.
She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her personal saviour and joined Union Cypress AME Church in the Jordan community of Manning. After moving, she joined Simpson-Fletcher United Methodist Church. She was employed by Lankenau Hospital and retired July 1, 1993.
Survivors besides her husband of the home include a son, Benjamin Roberson Jr. of Philadelphia; two daughters, Gracie Bennett of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Brenda Roberson of Philadelphia; five brothers, King, Arthur Jr., Willie and Rufus Bennett, all of Manning, and Romie Bennett of Sumter; four sisters, Florine Dingle of Manning, Lizzie Taylor and Roxie Bennett, both of New York, and Rosa Smith.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at Simpson-Fletcher United Methodist Church.

OLYMPIA PARK, Ill. — Henry “Blue” Dinkins, 55, husband of JoeAnn Benford Dinkins, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at St. James Hospital.
Born June 10, 1947, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Willie Dinkins and Cornelia Parker Dinkins.
He attended Moore Elementary School in Sumter County, Nichlos Junior High School and Evanston Township High School in Evanston, Ill. He has been a part of the Hassett Air Express family for 10 years where he hardly missed a weekend run to Boston. Prior to Hassett, he was employed at Jay-Bee Cartage Company for 26 years.
Survivors include six children, Chiquita Hogue, Kimberly Dinkins, Clifton Benford, Deitra Smith, Cornelia Dinkins and Antonio Dinkins; a brother, Henson Dinkins Sr. of Zion, Ill.; four sisters, Carrie Lloyd of Sumter, Rena Stuckey of Dalzell, Rebecca Woodridge and Glorena Dingle, both of Evanston; and five grandchildren.
The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Rembert with the Rev. Anthony Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers and floral bearers will be friends of the family.
The funeral procession will leave at 11:30 a.m. from the home of his sister, Carrie Lloyd, 707 Brockington St.

Dorothy Smith Monroe, widow of the late Jessie Monroe, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 1, 1922, in the New Zion community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late John and Elouise Cousar Smith.

MANNING — William Bryant Jr., husband of Sadie Hilton Bryant, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born May 26, 1949, in Clarendon County, he was a son of William Bryant Sr. and Marie Johnson Bryant. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. Mr. Bryant was a member of St. John Baptist Church in the Bloomville community of Clarendon County, and he worked in different capacities in Clarendon County.
Survivors besides his wife of Manning include a son, Gary M. Bryant (Iris) of Manning; a daughter, Tammy L. Dingle (Jimmy) of Manning; a brother, Rickie Bryant (Paula) of Summerton; two sisters, Mary L. Tomlin (George) and Linda A. Harris (Thomas), both of Manning; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Chris Bryant; and two sisters, Rosie Marie Bryant and Pearline Bryant McDuffie.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at St. John Baptist Church, Bloomville community, with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson presiding. The Rev. Otis Wright Sr., Elder George McKnight, Prophet George R. Mitchell and Minister Calvin Burgess will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mathew Cemetery.

MARY H. CRANK
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mrs. Mary Ann Hoge Crank, 31, of Charlotte, N.C., died Thursday, March 31, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mrs. Crank was born July 9, 1971, in Enid, Okla., the only daughter of Ret. Col. William H. Hoge and Loyce Fish Hoge. She was a 1989 graduate of Clovis High School in Clovis, N.M., and attended Concord College in Athens, W.Va., the Panama Canal College in the Republic of Panama and graduated from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C., in 1995. Throughout high school and college, Mary was a member of the Honor Society.
While living in Clovis, N.M., she was a student and instructor with The Dance Academy and later served as a lifeguard in Clovis and in Panama. Mary was associated with Toys R Us from 1993 until 1998 and later with The Sports Cafe in Charleston, S.C., and most recently worked with Patterson Business Systems in Charlotte.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, from Our Lady of the Skies Catholic Church at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, S.C. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, from the Newell Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Charlotte, with the Rev. Martin L. King officiating.

Mary is survived by her parents, Ret. Col. Wiliam H. Hoge and Loyce Hoge, both of Sumter; a daughter, Paisley Anna Crank; her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Ruth M. Hoge of Princeton, W.Va.; two brothers, Michal W. Hoge and his wife, Laura, of Sumter and Marshall K. Hoge and his wife, Ashley, of Charleston; a nephew, Michal W. Hoge Jr.; two uncles, Wayne W. Fish and his wife, Sue, of Bartlesville, Okla., and Robert K. Hoge and his wife, Linda, of Bluefield, W.Va.; two aunts, Betty Hoge of Cowpens, S.C. and Barbara Davidson and her husband, Dennis, of Bluefield; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Timothy Allen Crank on March 21, 2003, and grandparents Wilson C. Hoge and Earl C. and Hazel A. Fish.

MANNING — Cornelia Bryant McFadden, 68, widow of Charlie McFadden, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at her home in Alcolu.
Born July 16, 1934, in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late James Ernest Bryant and the late Lizzie Jane Hickman Bryant. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Horse Branch Freewill Baptist Church and recently attended Graham Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Hope Miller of Pinewood; a son, William K. Miles of Alcolu; four sisters, Nell B. Heins of Kingstree, Virginia McNeill of Florence, Jane Moore of Mt. Pleasant and Jerry Holladay of Sumter; a brother, James Carlisle Bryant of Hanahan; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. John Patrick will officiate. Burial will follow in Horse Branch Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Turbeville.

MANNING — Gerald Sage “Jerry” Bradshaw Sr., 65, husband of Lola Tomlinson Bradshaw, died Monday, March 31, 2003, in Manning.
Born Aug. 20, 1937, in Fredericksburg, Va., he was a son of the late Randolph Loriener Bradshaw and the late Alta Sage Bradshaw. He was a graduate of William and Mary Richmond, a U. S. Army veteran, owner and operator of Jerry’s Truckstop, attended the Presbyterian Church at Manning and was past chairman of the Clarendon County Airport Commission, a member of the S.C. Governor’s Billfish Commission, past Business Person of the Year for Clarendon County, and a member of various committees with Unocal.
Surviving are his wife of Manning; two sons, Maj. Gerald Sage “Brad” Bradshaw Jr. of Las Vegas and Randolph Lee “Randy” Bradshaw of the home; four daughters, Ann Forrest Bradshaw of Kansas City, Mo., Kell B. Culclasure of Manning, Carlie B. Green of Sumter and Cuen B. Livingston of Pinewood; a sister, Pat Button of California; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at 1452 Canterberry Drive, Manning. The Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes will officiate.

During her youth, she was a member of Friendship Presbyterian Church. In the late 1930s, she moved to Sumter and joined the Second Presbyterian Church, where she served faithfully.
Survivors include two daughters, Edith Smith of Sumter and Bernice Daniel of Austin, Texas; a sister, Jeanette Davis of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jessie Monroe, and a brother, Charlie Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Julia Prince officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. R.E. Bligen Jr., the Rev. Emma W. Thompson and Elder Frances D. Singleton. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery.
The Presbyterian men will serve as pallbearers and the Presbyterian women will serve as flower bearers.
The funeral procession will leave from 34 S. Salem St. at noon.

Lou Ella “Gurdie” China Britton, wife of the late Henry Britton Sr., died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at her residence.
Born in Clarendon County on April 21, 1911, she was the second oldest child of the late Robert China and Elizabeth McCoy China.

VERMELL D. WATSON
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Vermell Davis Watson, 56, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the Carolinas Medical Center.
Born Nov. 10, 1946, in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of Romeo and Corene Lowder Davis. She received her education in the public school system of Sumter. After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1964, she furthered her education by attending Morris College in Sumter and graduated in 1968 with a bachelor of science degree. She received her master in education degree from the University of North Carolina of Charlotte.
She began her teaching career as a teacher in the public school system of Horry County and Sumter County School District No. 2 and ended her teaching career in Charlotte, Mecklenburg school system at West Charlotte High School.
At a young age, Vermell joined St. Paul AME Church in Sumter. While residing in Charlotte, she joined C.N. Jenkins Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Pages Turning Book Club and the NAACP of Charlotte.
Survivors include a son, Robert “Bobby” Lee Watson Jr. of the home; adopted brothers, Charles Lowder of Baltimore and Dr. Thomas Gay of Michelville, Md.; two aunts, Lillian Lowder Barr of Baltimore and Lucille Davis of Sumter; an uncle, Roy Davis of Baltimore; and a grandson, Jordan Sykes of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy and Christopher Davis and a sister, Mrs. Connie Davis Hammond.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul AME Church, Plowden Mill Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. B.J. Glover officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert Galloway. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The Lincoln High School Class of 1964 will serve as pallbearers and flower bearers.
The funeral procession will leave at 12:45 p.m. from the home of her parents, 60 Hillard Drive, Apt. 50, Sumter.
The casket will be placed in state at the church at 12:30 until the hour of service.
Viewing will take place from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Community Funeral Home.
A wake service was held Wednesday evening at the C.N. Jenkins Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.
The family will receive friends and relatives today and tomorrow in Sumter at the home of her mother, Mrs. Corene Lowder Davis, 60 Hillard Drive, Apt. 50, Sumter.
