Mrs. Sarah “Nellie” Adams Mathis, 80, widow of Johnny Mathis, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.
Born Sept. 1, 1922, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. Snow and Mary Thomspon Adams.
She was a member of Antioch AME Church, where she served in the following capacities: Missionary Society, president of the senior choir, a member of the Y.M.C.A., Sunday school board, the A.C.E. League and many other auxiliaries. She served until her health began to decline.
She attended the public schools of Sumter County.
Survivors include two nieces that she reared, Ruth Williams of Pinewood and Beatrice B. Price of Staten Island, N.Y.; and a sister, Emma A. Bennett of Bronx, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Adams.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Antioch AME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Dr. Sylvester R. Miott, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Warren E. Hatcher, the Rev. Saymon James and the Rev. Amos Hatcher.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Trustees of the church and friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.
Missionaries of the church and friends of the family will serve as flower bearers.
The funeral procession will leave at 11:15 a.m. from the home of her niece, Ruth Williams, 1119 Coard Road, Pinewood.
A viewing will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today.

Mr. Marion Douglas Riley, 61, husband of Mrs. Ruth Bracey Riley, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
He was born Feb. 2, 1942, in Clarendon County.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Betty and Mr. Anthony Billup of 520 Pioneer Drive, Sumter.

PEARL R. GODWIN
Pearl Roberta Godwin, 82, widow of Foster Godwin, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, in Burke, Va.
Born July 14, 1920, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Ruth Lawrence and Estell Coulter Brown.
Survivors include two sons, Foster Godwin of Blythewood and Samuel Lawrence Godwin of Hopkins; a daughter, Vera Jones of Burke; a sister, Ruby Timmons; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra LaNell Truett Inman and a brother, Joe Earl Brown.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sumter Cemetery with Vinning Long officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at 175 Macy St.

FLORENCE — Violet Woods, 91, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, in Olanta.
She was a daughter of the late Vant and Elizabeth Herring Woods.
Survivors include a son, Marvin Jackson of Lake City; a brother, Rufus Woods of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jordan Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, Olanta, with Elder James Hanna officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

PASTOR BERTHA M. RUFUS-BROWN
Pastor Bertha M. Tindal Rufus-Brown, 58, widow of Booker T. Brown, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 9, 1944, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Clifton Tindal Sr. and Addie Singleton Tindal.
She attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Sumter Beauty College, A.L. Williams Class of Insurance and the School of Religion at Morris College. She was a bold witness for the Lord, fervent in her knowledge of the scriptures and a steadfast believer in the name of Jesus. She touched the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Survivors include four sons, Thomas Rufus Jr. (Lula), Barry Rufus (Regina) and Jeffrey Laron Rufus, all of Charlotte, N.C., and Terry Rufus (Jacquelyn) of Sumter; a daughter, Wilhelmenia Tindal Massey (Derrick) of Charlotte; an adopted son, Apostle Phillip O. Coleman; three adopted daughters, Mary Hilton of Sumter, Debra Thomas of Columbia and Brenda White of Manning; a brother, Sammie Lee Tindal of Sumter; four sisters, Mary Lou Spencer of Wilmington, Del., Dorothy M. Davis of Forrestville, Md., Rosa Lee Tindal of Washington, D.C., and Ella Nora Gamble (Otis) of Landover, Md.; 11 grandchildren; two adopted grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; an aunt; an uncle; and a host of nieces nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Supernatural Deliverance Tabernacle, Lynchburg. Apostle Phillip O. Coleman, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Minister Adam Culps and the Revs. Baxter and Vermell Humes.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary, 312 S. Main St.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Frances Bunce Hall, 87, died Monday.
Survivors include three sons, Norman Hall of Godwin, N.C., Worth Hall of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Preston Hall of Olympia, Wash.; a daughter, Iris Johnson of Pinewood, S.C.; two brothers, Earl Bunce of Godwin and A.B. Bunce of Fayetteville; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday and Cross Creek Cemetery No. 4.

GREELEYVILLE — Samuel James “Buster” Reid, 93, husband of Beulah Dukes Reid, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Carolina Hospital Systems in Florence.
Born Aug. 12, 1909, in the Greeleyville section of Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Richard Reid and Sarah Whack Reid. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County and attended Vorhees Trade School in Denmark, S.C. He was a retired building contractor and worked during World War II in Charleston and Florida.
He was a member of a Pride of Foreston, Masonic Lodge No. 296, former chairman of the Trustee Board, YMCA Lodge No. 17 and a life-long member of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ave’ Maria (James) Bowman of Atlanta; two grandchildren, James Bowman Jr. and Crystal (Kenneth) Marshall, both of Atlanta; an uncle, George Jones of Greeleyville; an aunt, Virginia Whack of Greeleyville; a sister-in-law, Sarah Dukes of Moncks Corner; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, S.C. 375, Greeleyville, with the Rev. Richard Addison, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. O’Neal Miller and the Rev. Clifford Levine. Burial will be in the Whack Cemetery, Greeleyville.

Frances White Dunlap, age 89, wife of the late Robert Gordon Dunlap, died on Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Covenant Place.
She was born in Sumter, a daughter of the late Belton Richleau White and Martha Dora Andrews White.
She was educated in Sumter city schools and received her degree in nursing from the Tuomey School of Nursing. She was a member of The Church of the Holy Comforter.
Surviving are one daughter, Sarah Dunlap Mikell and her husband, John Calder Mikell Jr., of Sumter; two brothers, Richard Michaux White of Wedgefield and Dr. Welbourne Andrews White of Gilbert; and three grandchildren, Frances Marie Mikell, John Gordon Mikell and Grady Edwin Calmes.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward Warren Moise; one daughter, Martha Louise Moise Calmes; and two brothers, Belton Richleau “B.R.” White and Dr. Charles H. White Sr.
Graveside services will be held on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Archer officiating.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at the residence of her daughter in Stateburg.

Rosa Lee Daniels Ford, 57, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 30, 1945, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Mose Daniels and the late Willie Bell Pearson Daniels.
She received her formal education in Sumter County. At an early age, she joined Mulberry Baptist Church. She served faithfully on the senior usher ministry and the adult choir ministry.
She later joined Faith Enterprise, where she served as an usher and as a member of the choir. She had a great love for gospel singing. She sang with the Gospel Queens, the Majestics and the Volunteers. She was employed by Tuomey Health Care System for many years and later employed by McElveen Manor until she became ill.
Survivors besides her father include a daughter, Claudette (Stacy) Dyches of Bushkill, Pa.; three god-daughters, Angela David of Effingham, Theresa Holiday of Sumter and Tyeshia Gordon of Germany; a brother, Mose Daniels Jr. of Sumter; four sisters, Mary Bell (Robert) Tomlin of Sumter, Eloise (Willie Frank) Gordon of Roosevelt, N.Y., Jeannie (Alfred) Williams of Sumter and Ciera Daniels of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Rondretta and Kevin Dyches; a sister-in-law, Bernette Daniels of Sumter; two aunts, Maggie Wilson and Perleane Rufus of Sumter; two uncles, Julius Daniels and Freddie Rufus of Sumter; a special friend, Freddie Jones of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today.

Ivory Marie Cartwright Evans, 68, widow of Leon J. Evans, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born in Burntwood, England, she was a daughter of the late Stanley Cartwright and the late Gwendolyn Florence Cartwright.
Mrs. Evans was a member of the Church of England. She was a former PTA president at Crosswell Drive Elementary School and a former officer with the Sumter High School Athletic Booster Club.
Surviving are: three sons, Robert Evans, Glenn Evans and his wife, Sherran, and Dean Evans and his wife, April, all of Sumter; a daughter, Lyn Mathis and her husband, Michael, of Bishopville; two sisters, Glenda Bundy and Christine Cartwright, both of Burntwood, England; and eight grandchildren, Kimberly Evans, Ashlyn Curtis, Christopher Evans, Amber Evans, Caycee Evans, Adam Mathis, Joshua Evans and Carlee Evans.
