Thelma Roach Gardner, 80, died May 18, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 15, 1922, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Richard Roach and Ellen Young Roach. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County.
Survivors include one daughter, Katie Gardner Conyers of Rembert; five brothers, Coleman Dennis, Eugene Dennis and Marcus Dennis, all of Rembert, Leland S. Dennis of Washington, D.C., and John Dennis of Dallas; five sisters, Mary Williams of Sumter, Emma Dennis Ramsey of Cleveland, Louise Davis of Rembert, Ella M. Dennis Christan of Saluda, and Carrie M. Dennis of New York City; one grandson; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Della Grant, Helen Young and Gertrude Marshall; and one brother, Richard Roach Jr. The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday from the Rafting Creek Baptist Church, S.C. 261 North, Rembert, with the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert L. Cleckley, the Rev. Dr. Marvin Hodge Sr., and the Rev. Freddie Thomas.
Burial will be in Rafting Creek Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Rembert.
Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

NATHANIEL LOWERY Sr.
LYNCHBURG — Mr. Nathaniel Lowery Sr., of 2004 Pleasant Grove Road, Lynchburg, died on Saturday, May 17, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Hospital in Florence, after a sudden illness.
He was born Sept. 15, 1942, to the late George and Lucille Lowery. “Tootsie,” as he was affectionately known, received his formal education in the public schools of Lee County and, in his early youth, joined Warren Chapel United Methodist Church, where he accepted Christ as his personal Savior.
Mr. Lowery was joined in holy matrimony to Mary Wilson of Lee County. This union was blessed with four children.
He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Mary Wilson Lowery of the home; two sons, Nathaniel Lowery Jr. (Mary Letha) and Ervin Lowery (Jenny), both of Lynchburg; two daughters, Cecile L. Townsend (Chris) of Lynchburg and Denise L. Kennedy (Lorenzo) of Jacksonville, N.C.; one daughter-in-law, Cathy Carter of Lynchburg; four sisters, Elease Faulknew (Grant) and Hermenia M. Smith (Kenneth), both of Washington, D.C., Blanche G. Montgomery of Fort Washington, Md., and Lillie B. Williams Stewart (Crest) of Temple Hills, Md.; one brother, George Lowery Jr. (Vermelle) of Hyattsville, Md.; one sister-in-law, Josephine Fleming (Harry) of Lynchburg; four brothers-in-law, Curtis Wilson of the home, George Wilson of Winston Salem, N.C., Charles Wilson of Myrtle Beach and Ernest Wilson of Florence; a devoted and special cousin, M.L. Lowery Sr. (Lottie Bell) of Timmonsville; 12 grandchildren; eight aunts; two uncles; and a host of other relatives and friends.
One son, Harry Lee Carter, and one brother, Chalmus Lowery Sr., preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Warren Chapel United Methodist Church in South Lynchburg with burial following in Hawkins Cemetery. The Rev. John A. Sellers, pastor, will be officiating.

ELIZABETH B. HARRIS GAINER
CLEVELAND — Elizabeth Harris Gainer, 90, died Thursday, May 15, in Cleveland.
Born in Lee County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Lucius and Mary Franklin Byrd. She attended public schools in Lee County and Voorhees College, where she obtained her cosmetology license and enjoyed her profession as a hairdresser for many years. In 1945, Elizabeth moved to Cleveland. There she worked for Crile VA Hospital. Later she was employed with Cleveland Municipal School System, where she retired.
Elizabeth accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age while attending New Bethel AME Church, Bishopville. After she moved to Cleveland, she continued her walk with Christ and joined East Side Methodist Church. She later joined Parkwood CME Church and was a longtime devoted member and dedicated her time until her health failed.
She was married to the late David Harris (1949-1969) then to the late Donald Gainer (1982-1986).
Surviving are one sister, Elease Stephenson; one foster brother, Robert Thomas (Queen); one nephew, Willie Alford Jr. (Florine), all of Cleveland; cousin, Marion Franklin of Bishopville; two nieces, Gloria Byrd of Atlanta and Dorthy Mae Clark of New York; grandnieces, Yvonne Alford, Carlean Alford, Brenda Alford-Daniels (Chuch) and Felicia Alford-Johnson; grandnephew, Craig Alford, all of Cleveland.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Square Deal Funeral Home with the Rev. Phillip Mixon presiding. Burial will be in Cousar Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the family home, 146 Harlem St., Bishopville.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ray Cooper of Washington, D.C., formerly of Lynchburg, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, in a Washington hospital after an illness.
Born March 17, 1957, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Anna Cooper.

Born Dec. 13, 1941, in Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of Deacon Topping Hamilton Scoville and Mildred Thompson Scoville.

FREMONT — Elizabeth Ballenger Norman, 78, widow of Clevie E. Norman Sr., died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Wilson Medical Center.
A native of Craven County, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Ballenger and Della Chase Ballenger.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont with the Rev. Barry Williamson and the Rev. Richard Glosson officiating.

Born March 25, 1963, in Rembert, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Alston.

BISHOPVILLE — Kathryn Nesbitt Caughman, 81, widow of Roy Caughman, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Wilson McCoy Nesbitt and the late Elizabeth Pierce Nesbitt.
She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Elliott.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Chavis and her husband, Don, of Bishopville; a son, Andy Caughman of Bishopville; two sisters, Molly Moore and Carol Johnson and her husband, Calbert, all of Bishopville; a granddaughter, Donna Nutter of Timmonsville; a grandson, Jason Chavis of Timmonsville; and a great-grandson, Noah Nutter of Timmonsville.

MANNING — Mr. Mack Hilton Sr., husband of Mrs. Mamie Essie Hilton, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at his home.
Born Feb. 10, 1937, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Rev. Joe Hilton and Mrs. Margaret Stukes Hilton.
He was a deacon at Mount Calvary FBH Church and was also one of the musicians. Prior to his retirement he was employed by Burris Refrigerated Services of Sumter.
Survivors besides his wife of Manning include five sons, Mack Hilton Jr. of Chilie, South America, Kenneth Hilton (Mary) of Sumter, Michael Hilton (Andrea) of Bloomfield, Conn., Carlos Hilton of Florence and Harold Whack (Janie) of Hampton, Va.; four daughters, Doris Hilton and Cherene Hilton, both of Columbia, Rosa Hilton of Sumter and Joann Billie (Phillip) of Manning; an adopted daughter, Stacey Salters of Manning; three brothers, Joe Hilton II (Hattie) of Akron, Ohio, and the Rev. Cecil Hilton (Sally) and Levan Hilton (Chinese), all of Manning; a mother-in-law, Mrs. Lucille McKnight of Sumter; and 21 grandchildren.

Mary Lee Crawford, 75, widow of Lucius Crawford, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Mariner Health West.
Born Aug. 11, 1927, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Beatrice Logan Spry.
After moving back to Sumter in 1970, she joined St. Paul Holiness Church. She was a faith member of the church and a dedicated member of the Pastor’s Aide until her health failed.
Survivors include a son, Willie James (Annie M.) of Long Island, N.Y., a sister, Gladys Sinkler of Sumter, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Holiness Church with Bishop Joe Brunson, pastor, and the Rev. Ruth Gamble, assistant pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder Pierson and the Rev. Shirley Holliday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will lie in state at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

COLUMBIA — Services for Agnes Eagerton Green, 88, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Rembert Church in Woodrow, conducted by the Rev. Robert Riegel. Burial will take place immediately afterward in the family plot.

Mrs. Green, wife of the late, Ralph Thompson Green, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003.
Born in Pinewood, Dec. 25, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Henry Council Eagerton and Cleopatra Elliot Eagerton.
Surviving are her daughters, Cleopatra (Patsy) Green, Mary Green Petersen and Roberta Green Scott, all of Columbia, and Donna Green McGinnis of Houston and Saudi Arabia; sons, Ralph T. Green of Columbia and Henry E. Green of Abbeville; eight grandchildren, Nelson and Ashley Green, DesChamps Harris, Mary Gwyn, Elizabeth Muir, Katherine Knapp, Thomas B. Scott III and Darrell Scott; a brother, Robert Eagerton; and sisters, Carolina Waterbury, Roberta Eagerton, Josephine Wallace, Claire Snyder and Adaline Goddard.
She was predeceased by her son, William McDonald Green IV.

Mr. James C. “Snook” English, 89, husband of Dora English, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at his home.
Born March 19, 1914, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Mr. Doughtery and Mrs. Alethia English.
He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Sumter for many years. Mr. English retired from Georgia Pacific Corp. after working many years.
Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, John English and James Jeffery English Jr., both of Sumter; eight daughters, Jannie Dixon and her husband, Russell, of Alcolu, Geraldine Brunson of Baltimore, Susan Barker and her husband, Victor, of Kansas City, Mo., Jane English, Virginia Dwyer, Linda Dwyer, Debra Brady and her husband, Allan, and Ida Taylor and her husband, Lee, all of Sumter; a sister, Edith Johnson of Sumter; and a host of grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman English.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. LaMonte Newsome, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Thomas Blyther and the Rev. Barbara Lash. Interment will follow in the Greenhill Baptist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the home of his wife, 151 Hoyt St. in Sumter.

SUMMERTON — Charlotte Epps Allen, 91, widow of Steve Allen, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home.
Born June 23, 1911, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of Dock Epps Sr. and Lillie Mae McFadden Epps.
At an early age, she joined Little Zion Baptist Church. Later the church split and First Baptist Church of Crown Heights was formed, where she become a member and sang on the gospel choir. Mrs. Allen resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., for many years before moving back home to Sumter.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Charlene Scarborough; two sisters, Anna Terry of Brooklyn and Amelia Epps of Sumter; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Epps of Sumter, Johnnie Lee Epps of Montgomery, Ala., Lucinda Epps of Manning and Patricia Epps of Brooklyn; and a brother-in-law, Richard McCleary of Sumter.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Deloris E. Scarborough; a grandson, Henry Scarborough; four brothers, David, John, Ceasar and Dock Epps Jr.; and three sisters, Lillie Mae Zinnerman, Sarah Pearson and Mary Jane McCleary.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc. with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating, assisted by the Rev. Marion H. Newton. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery.
