Angeletia Nicole “Button” Melton, 18, died Friday, May 23, 2003, on High Street.
Born Dec. 17, 1984, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Nathaniel and Lillie Melton Peterson.
At the age of eight, she accepted Christ as her personal savior. From the year 1996 to the year of 2000, she lived in Winston-Salem, N.C., where she was an active member of the Fellowship Bible Baptist Church. She attended Reynolds High School and later transferred to Parkland High School. After returning to Sumter, she attended Crestwood High School and later transferred to Sumter High School. She was a senior nominated for Who’s Who among many and was a member of the Kodak Honor Society. She received many scholarships and was planning to attend Florida State University and major in law.
Survivors besides her parents include a brother, Jacolby Peterson of the home; maternal grandfather, Eugene Melton (Dorothy); five aunts, Cynthia Capers, Lynda Melton (Tony), Shirley Peterson, all of Sumter, Ethel Baxton of Columbia and Lynda Peterson of Florida; three uncles, Henry Melton (Jane), Ben Peterson, all of Sumter, and Jammie Melton of Seattle, Wash.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Eliza Melton, Vermell Peterson and Ben Peterson.
A wake service will be held from 6 to 8 tonight.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Cherryvale Baptist Church with Pastor Ed Bowen officiating, assisted by Pastor Gregory Dennis. Burial will be in Goodwill Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her aunt, Ethel Melton, 2830 Frierson Road in Dalzell.

Mrs. Margie V. “Miss Margie” Ard Durham, 74, widow of Andrew Jackson “Jack” Durham Jr., died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greeleyville, she was a daughter of the late William Ard and the late Maybelle Browder Ard.
Mrs. Durham was a member of Smithville Evangelical Baptist Church. She was former owner and operator of Kiddie Korner Day Care Center.
Surviving are five sons, Andrew Jackson “Andy” Durham Jr. of Reno, Nev., Paul Gary Durham of Aynor, Dwayne J. Durham of Wedgefield, and Randy William Durham and Lewis Keith Durham, both of Sumter; two daughters, Candice B. “Candy” Moody of Columbia and Cathy Renee Lee of Blythewood; three sisters, Mrs. George (Wanda) Mundy of Prosperity, Mrs. David (Agnes) Rogers of Orangeburg and Mrs. Wesley (Judy) Copeland of Sumter; two brothers, Billy Ard of Sumter and Wayne Ard of Clarksville, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Chris Durham; a sister, Mrs. Tom (Ivey) Moody; four half-sisters, Mrs. Annie Ard Marshall, Mrs. Kizzie Ard Mason, Mrs. Etta Ard Moore and Mrs. Naughty Ard Fleming; two grandchildren, Chad Durham Blackwell and Holly Durham.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Freddie Gaymon officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Randy Durham, Matthew Moody, Cameron Durham, Zack Durham, Jamie Foxworth and Rory Hair.
Honorary pallbearers will be Peter Anderson, Raymond Truett, Jim Baker Sr., Jim Baker Jr. and Hoyt Parker.

ALBERTUS BAKER
Albertus Baker, 91, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 15, 1912, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Norman Baker and Julia Moses Baker. He was educated at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind in Spartanburg. He was a member of the National Federation of the Blind. He completed his training for the South Carolina Commission for the Blind as a business enterprise manager in January 1977 and went on to manage several concession stands, which included stands at USC Sumter, Moncks Corner and at Morris College, where he served for more than 20 years.
He was a faithful and loyal member of Clark’s United Methodist Church, where he began playing music for the church in 1932 and continued as church musician until the end. He also served as director of music and church school superintendent.
Survivors include two sons, Leroy Wilson of Sumter and Thomas Johnson of North Carolina; a daughter, Aletha Capers of Sumter; two sisters, Alice Baker and Edna Baker of East Orange, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Isaac, Howard, James, and Hayes Baker Sr.; and a sister, Wilhelmina Wertz.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Clark’s United Methodist Church, S.C 401, with the Rev. Eddie C. Thomas Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie Lawson, the Rev. James Jackson, the Rev. James E. Williams and the Rev. Raymond Cooks Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
United Methodist Men will serve as pallbearers, and United Methodist Women will serve as flower bearers.
The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m.
The funeral procession will leave at 3:30 p.m. from the home, 3000 Cubbage Road in Sumter.

MINNIE IDA C. MACK
MANNING — Minnie Ida Caldwell Mack, 99, widow of Deacon Dean Mack Sr., died Monday, May 26, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born May 10, 1904, in the St. Paul and Davis Crossroad section of Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Junious and Amanda Josephine Briggs Caldwell. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined Taw Caw Baptist Church in Summerton. After her family moved to Manning, she joined Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church, serving on the deaconess board, missionary board and the senior choir.
Survivors include one son, Dean Mack Sr. of Manning; two daughters, Virginia Bowman of Manning and Helen (Thomas) James of Summerton; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four children, James Edward Mack, Ellison Mack, Martha McFadden and Mary Fulton.
The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. G.K. Carter, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. J.H. Richburg, the Rev. G.P. Windley Sr. and the Rev. J.H. Pringle. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be men of the church and friends of the family.
Floral bearers will be ladies of the church and friends of the family.

BISHOPVILLE — Ollie Moore, 95, died Monday evening, May 26, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Lee County, March 11, 1908, he was a son of the late Josh Atkinson and Flora Moore Davis. He attended the public schools of Lee County. He joined New Hope Baptist Church at an early age. He was a faithful member of Lucknow Lodge No. 324, where he received his 50th Masonic pin in May 2003.
Surviving are one daughter, Ruby Butler of the home; four granddaughters, Ora Moore and Willia Nelsoms, both of Philadelphia, Carrie Young of Sumter and Myra Bulter of Bishopville; four great-grandchildren, Shanda Butler of Philadelphia, Brandon, Terrence and Sierra, all of Bishopville; one great-great-grandson, Davion Lowery of Lynchburg; his sister’s children whom he raised, Anna Mae Wilson of Glen Mills, Pa., Edward Brisbon and Margaret Brisbon, both of Philadelphia; one brother, Melvin (Modena) Davis of Philadelphia; two sisters, Catherine McMaster of Bishopville and Frances Wilson of Washington, D.C.; nephews, nieces and other relatives.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, Bishopville, with the Rev. W.B. Johnson presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

PINEWOOD — Mrs. Annie Eliza “Gallie” DuBose of 1773 Bomar Trail, age 92, widow of Henry DuBose, died May 25, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born Aug. 5, 1910, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Mary Davis Burgess and Frank Richardson. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. In her early youth, she joined Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood where she remained until her death.
Survivors include one son, Henry DuBose Jr. of Pinewood; one daughter, Elease Canty of Pinewood; three granddaughters, Yolanda Canty, Trecia Canty of Cedarhurst, N.Y., and Deyun Riley of Pinewood; one grandson, Ray Crosby of Pinewood; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Beatrice Harvin, Lucille Davis and Louise Richardson; and one granddaughter, Lorretta Johnson.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood with the Rev. E.L. Sanders, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Cammie Greene, the Rev. Jonathan Smith and the Rev. Roosevelt Body. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

BISHOPVILLE — Kathryn Nesbitt Caughman, 81, widow of Roy Caughman, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Wilson McCoy Nesbitt and the late Elizabeth Pierce Nesbitt.
She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Elliott.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Chavis and her husband, Don, of Bishopville; a son, Andy Caughman of Bishopville; two sisters, Molly Moore and Carol Johnson and her husband, Calbert, all of Bishopville; a granddaughter, Donna Nutter of Timmonsville; a grandson, Jason Chavis of Timmonsville; and a great-grandson, Noah Nutter of Timmonsville.

VARIAN D. NELSON
CHARLESTON — Mr. Varian D. “Kelly” Nelson, age 26, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at the Medical University of Charleston.
He was born in Sumter County on April 12, 1977, to Ms. Jean Kelly and the late Mr. Larry Donnell Nelson. He was educated at Manchester Elementary School in Sumter County. After his family moved to Charleston, he attended Norman C. Toole Middle School and graduated from North Charleston High School. After graduation, he was employed by the Collum Maniacal Construction Co. as a sheet metal technician for four years. He later joined Job Corp and, after completion of Job Corp training, he gained employment with the Charleston Air Force Base. He also worked as a security personnel at the Naval Weapon Station, Charleston. At an early age, he joined St. Thomas the Apostle Church in North Charleston.
Survivors include his mother, Ms. Jean Kelly of the home, Charleston; one sister, Minister Roneika China of Sumter; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Annie McKnight Kelly of Charleston; maternal grandfather, Mr. Blease “BJ” White of South Bend, Ind.; maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Betty White of South Bend, Ind.; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Angeline Sanders Nelson of Sumter; paternal grandfather, Mr. John Felix Nelson of Sumter.
Funeral service will be held Saturday at noon at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 6650 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, with Father Williams F. Leonard. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.

Mr. James C. “Snook” English, age 90, 13 L St., husband of Dora English, died May 23, 2003, at his residence.
Born March 19, 1913, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Mr. Doughtery and Mrs. Alethia English.
He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Sumter for many years. Mr. English retired from Georgia Pacific Corporation after working many years.
Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, John English and James Jeffery English Jr., both of Sumter; eight daughters, Jannie Dixon and her husband, Russell, of Alcolu, Geraldine Brunson of Baltimore, Susan Barker and her husband, Victor, of Kansas City, Mo., Jane English, Virginia Dwyer, Linda Dwyer, Debra Brady and her husband, Allan, and Ida Taylor and her husband, Lee, all of Sumter; a brother, Willie Wright of Manning; a sister, Edith Johnson of Sumter; and a host of grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman English.

WILLIE E. WILLIAMS Jr.
Mr. Willie E. Williams Jr., of 29 Murphy St., age 54, died May 24, 2003, at S.C. 261, Sumter County.
Born Feb. 27, 1949, in Sumter County, he was a son of Dorothy Black Williams and the late Willie E. Williams Sr. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, he joined Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged after four years. He was a member of the Thunder Guard Motorcycle Club in Sumter where he enjoyed riding. Willie was twice married, first to the late Mrs. Rebecca Heyward and second to Mrs. Florence Thompson.
Survivors besides his mother include his wife, Florence T. Williams of the home, Sumter; two sons, Jermaine Antonio Williams of Sumter and Willie Harrison of Sumter; two stepsons, Alonzo Thompson and Willie Golden Jr., both of Sumter; four daughters, Wanda (Tim) Heyward, Susie (Calvin) Martine, Takaha Hurley and husband, Decture Sr., all of Atlanta; and Teresa Hayes of Bronx, N.Y.; one stepdaughter, Marilyn Thompson of Sumter; one brother, Marvin Williams of Sumter; four sisters, Carrie Williams of Sumter, Shirley William of Bronx, N.Y., Sharon Wright and husband, Percel, of Queens, N.Y., and Doris Walters of Albany, N.Y.; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Larry Weston, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ruth Oliver, the Rev. Kenneth Choice and the Rev. James Jackson. Burial will follow in the Florence National Cemetery, Florence, on Monday at 11 a.m.
