JOHN CHAMBERS
BISHOPVILLE — John “Bubba” Chambers, widower of Amelia Brown Chambers and Alphine Fortune Chambers, died May 27, 2003, at Mariner Nursing Facility-East in Sumter.
Born Sept. 15, 1910, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Johnny Chambers and Charlotte Hickman Chambers. Mr. Chambers attended the public schools of Lee County. He retired from the FCX in Sumter and was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church in Bishopville.
Survivors include one son, Bobby Robinson of New Jersey; four daughters, Marie (Bennie Jr.) Charles and Mary Lee Pearson, both of Bishopville, Alice Smalls of Philadelphia and Ella Mae Robinson of New Jersey; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Dickerson and Eliza Holmes.
A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Baptist Church, Bishopville. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Charles Jr., 42 Elliott Highway, Wisacky community, Lee County.
Wilson’s Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

HENRY L. JAMES
NEPTUNE, N.J. — Henry L. James, age 68, husband of Audrey L. Mitchell James, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at his residence in Neptune, N.J.
Born Dec. 14, 1934, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Thomas and Maebell Benjamin James. He was an active member of Antioch UME Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He sang in the quartet choir. Before retiring in 2001, he was employed as a machine operator for more than 40 years. He worked for the Mansville Construction Co. and later for Stacy Construction Co. (now known as Precision Construction). He was a member of the United Masonic Brotherhood Inc. For the past 46 years, he resided in New Jersey.
Survivors besides his wife include one son, Richard A. James of Neptune, N.J.; four daughters, Diane English of Columbia, Toinete Kirk of Asbury Park, N.J., Linda Aaron of Columbia and Cheryl James-Williams of Neptune, N.J.; one brother, William James of Lansing, Mich.; four sisters, Bessie Junious of Pinewood, Dorothy Lane of Lansing, Mable James of New York City and Ruth King of Lansing; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Antioch UME Church, Rimini, with the Rev. Jonathan Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Mitchell family home, White and Rivers Road, Rimini.

CHRISTIAN N. BRYAN
Christian Nicole Bryan, infant daughter of James D. and Casey Carraway Bryan of Sumter, died May 24, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Surviving are her parents; maternal grandparents, Dale and Debbie Carraway of Pinewood; paternal grandparents, Jay and Tamie Bryan of Sumter; great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Welch of Sumter, Ms. Nancy Carraway of Sumter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vitello of Paxville, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bryan Sr. of Litchfield Beach.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Jay Carraway.
Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Bobby Fletcher officiating.
Memorials may be made to The Wee Care Foundation, in care of The First Baptist Church, Leesville S.C.

HENRY SOLOMON
OCALA, Fla. — Henry Solomon, age 81, husband of Aletha Dowdy Solomon and widower of Naomi Carter Solomon, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Palm Garden Nursing Home, Ocala, Fla.
Born Oct. 15, 1921, in Summerton, S.C, he was a son of the late Gus and Elease Boyd Solomon. He was a faithful member of Mount Pleasant UME Church until his health failed.
In 1940 he was married to the late Naomi Carter Solomon and to this union two children were born, Elease Solomon of Summerton and Henry Solomon of Birmingham, Ala. In the late 1950s he married Letha Doughty and to this union four children were born, Henrietta, Lee and Daniel Solomon, all of Ocala, Fla., and Paul Solomon of Detroit. His other children are Gloria Hart, Geneva Taylor, David Parson, Johnny Parson, Dorothy Parson, Carolyn Martin and Cindy House, all of Summerton; Charlie Lawson, Evonne Parson and Michael Johnson, all of New York; Kelvin Robinson, Sylvester Robinson, John Robinson and Charlie Green, all of North Carolina; the Rev. Charlie Thomas of Sumter, S.C., Susie Becastro of Gainesville, Fla.; Regina Mack of San Diego. Other survivors include 15 stepchildren; one brother, Birnie Blanding of Silver; one sister, Sarah Solomon of Orangeburg; 80 grandchildren; 107 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Maggie Robinson of Summerton.
He was preceded in death by four children, Carl Hart, Ronnie Hart, Birnie Briggs and a baby girl.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating, the Rev. Powell Hampton, eulogist, and assisted by the Rev. Charlie Thomas.
Burial will be in Solomon Plot of Brown Cemetery, Panola.
The funeral procession will leave from the home of his daughter, Elease Solomon, 3 Wassau St., Summerton.
The body will lie in state from noon until the time of the service. There will be no viewing after the service.

NAOMI GEORGIA
SUMMERTON — Pastor Naomi “Gertrude” Georgia, 53, widow of John Georgia Sr., died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at her residence.
Born Nov. 14, 1949, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac Dallas and Marie Bethune Dallas. In her youth, she was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church. She was a former member of Clarendon School District 1 School Board and a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School Class of 1968.
Survivors include two sons, John D. Georgia Jr. and Abraham E. Georgia of the home; two daughters, Michelle Smith of Baltimore and Detrice (Desmond) Brown of Summerton; two brothers, William (Doris) Dallas of Port Chester, N.Y., and Johnnie (Helen) Dallas of White Plains, N.Y.; two sisters, Ellea (Lonnie) Evans of Newton, Miss., and Yvette (Bernard) Jones of Spring Valley, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and Mrs. Willie Mae Elma Jackson of the home.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan, pastor, and Bishop Jeffery Johnson officiating, assisted by the Revs. Albert Thomas, Ernest Brown, John Gilliam and Calvin Jackson.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be friends of the family.
Honorary pallbearers will be ministers.
Floral bearers will be friends of the family and honorary missionaries.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from 1056 Urbana Road, Summerton.

MARY L. CRAWFORD
Mary Lee Crawford, 75, widow of Lucius Crawford, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Mariner Health West.
Born Aug. 11, 1927, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Beatrice Logan Spry.
After moving back to Sumter in 1970, she joined St. Paul Holiness Church. She was a faith member of the church and a dedicated member of the Pastor’s Aide until her health failed.
Survivors include a son, Willie James (Annie M.) of Long Island, N.Y.; a sister, Gladys Sinkler of Sumter; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at St. Paul Holiness Church with Pastor Shirley Holliday, Assistant Pastor Ruth Gamble and Bishop Joe Brunson officiating, assisted by Elder Pierson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will lie in state at 2:30 p.m. today.
The family will receive friends and the home of her sister, Gladys Sinkler, 520 S. Harvin St.
Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

DeLOIS S. GRANT
DeLois Harriett Scoville Grant, 61, died May 28, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 13, 1941, in Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of the late Deacon Topping Hamilton Scoville and Mildred Thompson Scoville. She attended East Middle Rosenwald Elementary School and graduated with honors from Bethene Memorial High School (Bowman High School). She attended South Carolina State University and Clafin University Summer School in Orangeburg. She graduated from Morris College in Sumter with a degree in elementary education. She also attended post-graduate studies at Columbia College in Columbia. She completed her internship at Stone Hill Elementary School in Cassatt. Mrs. Grant worked at Ebenezer High School as a librarian and taught at Manchester (summer school), Shaw Heights, Summerton Middle and St. John Elementary School. She was employed by Evergreen Hillside Memorial Park in sales until her illness. She also acted in many Sumter Little Theater productions, including “Bells are Ringing.”
Survivors include one daughter, Gina Linettee Grant of the home; two brothers, Larcus Marcel Scoville (Janie) and Harold Clevland Scoville (Emily), both of Orangeburg; one sister, Hermine Scoville Jenkins of Bowman; and a special daughter, Phatisha Lawan Pitts.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Topping H. Scoville Jr. (Ted) and Curtis I. Scoville.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Salem Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Lamont Newsome, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie Warring.
The processional will leave at 10:30 a.m. from the home, 37B Willow Drive, Sumter.
The family will receive friends at the home, 37B Willow Drive, Sumter.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

HARRY T. LINDLEY
Harry Turner Lindley, 80, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Services will be announced by the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

HERBERT LEWIS
MANNING — Herbert Lewis, 50, husband of Shirley Lewis, died May 28, 2003, in Manning.
Born Sept. 3, 1952, in Manning, immediate family members include Pearl Lewis, mother, and Isaiah Lewis.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, Pearl Lewis, 560 Sunset Drive, Lot 2, Manning.
Services will be announced by Blackwell and Jenkins Funeral Home, Manning.

ELIZABETH C. BROWN
PINEWOOD — Mrs. Elizabeth C. Brown, widow of Mr. Hilliard (Mutta) Brown, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at her home in Pinewood after a brief illness.
Born in Summerton, Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. Ambrose Brown and the late Mrs. Ann White Canty.
The family will receive friends and family at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Canty Brown, 1070 Fullerton Road, Pinewood, in Panola community.
Services will be announced by Fleming Funeral Home of Summerton.

HERBERT LEWIS
MANNING – Herbert Lewis, 50, husband of Shirley W. Lewis, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003.
Born Sept. 3, 1952, in Manning, he was a son of Pearl Lewis and the late Isaiah Lewis. He was employed with McCray’s Landscaping in Miami, IGA in Manning and Lemon’s Landscaping in Manning.
Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Bertha Lee (Rev. Ronald) Bell of Hollywood, Fla., Mrs. Christine (Wilbert) Brunson of Sumter, Mrs. Mable Blanding McLeod of Manning, and a sister reared as a sister, Ms. Jacqueline Lewis of Manning; six brothers, Mr. Willie Lewis and companion, Karen Goodwin, of Hopkins, Mr. Cubit Lewis, Mr. Joe Jerry Lewis, Ronald (Rachel) Lewis, all of Manning, Mr. Floyd (Shirley) Lewis of Coconut Grove, Fla., Mr. Elijah (Renee) Lewis of Hollywood, Fla.; eight aunts, Mrs. Bessie (Rev. Rufus) Jenkins of Miami, Mrs. Minnie Bellinger of Coconut Grove, Mrs. Bertie Lee (Prince Floyd) Briggs of Columbia, Mrs. Beulah McCray, Mrs. Naomia Simmons, Mrs. Daisy (Raymond) Servance, all of Manning, Mrs. Edith (Revrend) McCray of Mullins and Mrs. Mary Ellen Thames of Philadelphia; and three great-aunts, Mrs. Rita Sheriff of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Dessie H. Wilson of Summerton and Mrs. Carrie (Oscar) Briggs of Manning.
A viewing will be held from 3 until 7 p.m. today at Blackwell and Jenkins Funeral Home.
The remains will be placed at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Church of God By Faith, Davis Station. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Elder Thomas Davis, Minister Richmond McDuffie and Prince Floyd Briggs officiating.
Burial will be in Church of God By Faith Cemetery, Davis Station.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of his mother, Pearl Lewis, 560 Sunset Drive, Lot II in Manning.
The family will also receive friends at the home of his mother.
Blackwell and Jenkins Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.

NANA BURNELLE
DALZELL – Nana Eleanor Barton Behilo Burnelle, 69, wife of Ronald Joseph Burnelle, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at National Healthcare Systems of Sumter.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.
