Fumiko Oota Howle, 74, widow of Jim Burrell Howle, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, in Charleston.
Born in Manchuria, China, she was a daughter of the late Kaso Oota and the late Michiyo Jzuchi Oota.
Mrs. Howle was a member of Hickory Road Baptist Church. She was a retired manager of Bits & Pieces Fabrics and a member of the Shepherd’s Center Quilters, Quilters of South Carolina, the FCL Sew Easy Sew Fun Club, and the Herb Society.
Surviving are a son, John Howle and his wife, Heather, of Columbia, N.C.; two daughters, Nancy Patterson and her husband, George, of Germantown, Tenn., and Edith Howle and her husband, Rick Throckmorton, of Charleston; a sister, Mitsuko Kajiyama of Kokura, Japan; a brother, Yoshitaka Oota of Fukuoka, Japan; two grandchildren, Michelle Stenske of Decatur, Ala., and Emily Howle of Columbia, N.C.; and one great-grandson, Connor Stenske.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Yushiaki Oota.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hickory Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Calvin D. Snelgrove Sr. officiating.
Burial will be in the Florence National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

BISHOPVILLE - Betty Rook Welborn Alexander, 74, wife of W. Ray Alexander, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at her home.
Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Charles Harris Welborn and the late Harriet McLaurin Welborn.
She was a member of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church and was a retired teacher and insurance agent. She graduated with a B.A. degree from Coker College and an honorary degree from Clemson University. She taught at Clio, and Ashwood School in Lee County.
Survivors besides her husband include a daughter, Harriet A. Owens and her husband, Randy, of Columbia; a son, Will Alexander and his wife, Elaine, of Bishopville; and two grandsons, Wesley Alexander of Bishopville and Nick Nelson of Columbia.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Rev. Kenneth Phelps officiating.
Burial will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery.

Tommie J. Barfield, 72, husband of Josephine Curry Barfield, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at his residence.
Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Jack L. Barfield and the late Tasker Lucille Welch Barfield.
Mr. Barfield attended Pocalla Holiness Church and was a self-employed farmer and mechanic.
He is survived by his wife of Sumter; four sons, Tommy Larry Barfield of Manning, Robert Lee Barfield of Warner Robbins, Ga., Ricky O’Neil Barfield of Sumter and Leon Barfield of Sumter; a daughter, Joan Pfeifer of Sumter; a sister, Anna Mahoney of Wilmington, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Barfield was preceded in death by a son, Willie Jack Barfield; a brother, Henry Barfield; and two sisters, Odessie Tidleman and Sherry Dennis.

Michael Gene Sulier Jr., 35, died June 5, 2003, at Lexington Medical Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Sumter, he is the son of Michael Gene Sulier Sr. and the son of Dianne Boykin.
Mr. Sulier was in the roofing construction business.
Surviving besides his mother of Gaston and his father of Pawley’s Island are his maternal grandparents, Perry and Marie Baker of Sumter; paternal grandparents, Verne Sulier of California; a son Michael Gene Sulier III of Gaston; two brothers, Tim Sulier of Columbia and Matthew Shealy of Gaston; three sisters, Heather, Rebecca and Savannah Sulier, all of Pawley’s Island.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Alice Gene Crawford.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert H. Sims Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Carnell Robert Moses, 44, died June 3, 2003, at his residence in Mayesville. He is survived by his wife, Georgie Ann Moses, of Mayesville.
Born in Lee County April 15, 1959, he was the son of the late Frank and Lorena Benbow Moses. He was employed by Santee Print Company for over 25 years. He was a member of Galilee Baptist Church in Mayesville.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Carnell Moses Jr. and Derrick Moses, both of Mayesville; a daughter, LaTonya Nelson; seven brothers, Frankie Lee, Charles, Harold, Curtis, Earl Moses, all of Mayesville, Glendell of Bishopville, and Roosevelt of Sumter; a sister, Joann McBride of Mayesville; and three grandchildren.
Moses was preceded in death by a brother, Clayton Moses, and a sister, Martha Ellen Moses.
The remains will be placed in the Galilee Baptist Church in Mayesville at 2:30 p.m. on Monday. Funeral services will begin at 3:30 p.m. Rev. Eugene Myers will be the officiating minister and will be assisted by Rev. Archie Temoney.
Burial will be in the Mayesville Cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave from 310 Wilson St. in Mayesville.
No wake services will be held.

William Jennings Carter, age 76, beloved husband of Carol Shaw Carter, died on Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Ernest Cleo Carter and Vermelle Jennings Carter. He was the president of Carter Grading & Paving Company. He was a real estate developer, worked for the FBI in Savanah, Ga., was a former board member of Covenant Place and served on The Administrative Board of The Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He was a member of The Elks Club, The Cains Mill Club, The McCrays Mill Club, The Trian Club and The American Legion. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Crisis. He was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, William Jennings Carter Jr. and his wife, Gail Andrews Carter, of Sumter; three daughters, Bett Carter Peeler and her husband, Bob Peeler, of Lexington, Vicki Carter Goodwin and her husband, Cliff Goodwin III, of Sumter and Cindy Carter Thompson and her husband, Charlie “Bobo” Thompson, of Georgetown; one brother, Ernest Cleo Carter Jr. of Sumter; five grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 3 p.m. at The Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Louis Jamison officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
