William Jennings Carter, age 76, beloved husband of Carol Shaw Carter, died on Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Ernest Cleo Carter and Vermelle Jennings Carter. He was the president of Carter Grading & Paving Company. He was a real estate developer, worked for the FBI in Savannah, Ga., was a former board member of Covenant Place and served on The Administrative Board of The Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He was a member of The Elks Club, The Cains Mill Club, The McCrays Mill Club, The Trian Club and The American Legion. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Crisis. He was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, William Jennings Carter Jr. and his wife, Gail Andrews Carter, of Sumter; three daughters, Bett Carter Peeler and her husband, Bob Peeler, of Lexington, Vicki Carter Goodwin and her husband, Cliff Goodwin III, of Sumter and Cindy Carter Thompson and her husband, Charlie “Bobo” Thompson, of Georgetown; one brother, Ernest Cleo Carter Jr. of Sumter; five Grandchildren; and two Step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at The Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Louis Jamison and the Rev. William F. “Bill” Rogers III officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Chris Carter, Jay Carter, Pat Carter, Lathan Roddey, Ervin Shaw and Richard White. Honorary pallbearers will be Luke Rogers, Ed Campbell, Alfred Murrell, W.A. Rosa Elizabeth “Picky” Wilson Wactor, widow of Thomas “Deke” Wactor, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. She was 75.
Born July 18, 1927, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Hall Wilson and Flora Robinson Wilson.
She attended the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Mt. Olive AME Church in Woodrow. Her last employment was with Sumter Casket Company.
Survivors include her son, Sammie Thomas Wactor of Plainfield, N.J.; five daughters, Willene Brisbone, Deloris Wactor, Vivian Wactor, Bell Glover and Patricia Coleman, all of Sumter; her aunt, Katie Carter of Charlotte, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 14 grandchildren.
Mrs. Wactor was preceded in death by her adopted daughter, Betty Julius, three sisters, Lillie Mae Mickens, Emma Knox, Eula Lee Council; four brothers, Adam Wilson, Hall Wilson Jr., Henry Wilson and David Wilson.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olive AME Church, S.C. 441, Woodrow. The Rev. Timothy A. Johnson Sr. will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Roberta Wilson. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Memorial Garden.
The funeral procession will leave from 5470 Raymond Jenkins Road at 2:15 p.m.

Louise Coleman Bryant, 99, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center in Bishopville. Born Feb. 16, 1904, in Barnwell, she was a daughter of the late Blythe Myers and Carrie Coleman Myers.
She was a former member of Second Baptist Church in Barnwell. She later joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where she was the mother of the church, member of the senior choir, the missionary society and federation of the blind.
Survivors include two aunts, Floria Bradford and Dorothy Coleman, both of Sumter; and a special cousin, Emily Ann Calhoun of Blackville.
The funeral will be 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry Barnes will officiate. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church at 3:30 p.m.
The funeral procession will leave Shiloh Randolph Manor on Bartlette Street at 4 p.m.

Joyce Ann Ridings Thomason, age 59, wife of the late Olin Donald Thomason, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center of Sumter.
Mrs. Thomason was born in Spartanburg, a daughter of Evelyn Wilson Ridings and the late Lonnie Ridings. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church of Sumter.
Surviving in addition to her mother of Spartanburg are one daughter, Tammy R. McKinney of Sumter; one brother, Lonnie E. Ridings of Simpsonville; two sisters, Peggy Hall and Judy Fisher, both of Spartanburg; three grandchildren, Dallas, Brittany and Cory Beavers.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Westside Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Bordeaux officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Schoenbeck was born in Cleveland a son of the late Vernon and Nettie Elizabeth Roberts Schoenbeck. He was a glass installer for Safelite Glass Co. in Columbia and was a childhood member of the Disciple of Christ in Cleveland.
Surviving are two stepsons, Steve Manross and his wife, Suzie, of Waverly, Iowa, and Jeff Manross and his wife, Adrea, of Irmo; three brothers, Robert L. Schoenbeck of Cleveland, James Gary Schoenbeck and his wife, Judy, of Avon Park, Fla., and Gary Allen Schoenbeck of North Olmstead, Ohio; five grandchildren, Anthony, Christopher, Kyle, Alex and Nichole.

She was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the New Beginnings Sunday School Class.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Pastor Emmanuel Burns, 54, husband of Helen M. Burns, died May 30, 2003, in Yakima, Wash.
Born July 30, 1948, in Sumter, he was a son of Larry and Lena Burns. He worked for the Mt. Adams Furniture and Union Gap Camper Manufacturer from 1967-1970 and later worked for the city of Toppenish as a water and sewer maintenance specialist from 1970-1974. He also worked as a city bus driver. He was employed for the last 28 years by Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., until his early retirement, March 31, 2003. In April 1973, he became a licensed minister. In June 1981, he was ordained as an elder and appointed pastor of Everlasting COGIC Inc.
He led a very full and challenging life and was involved in many community activities and events and was active as a volunteer spiritual leader at the Yakima County Juvenile Justice Center and the Yakima County Department of Corrections in Ahtanum, Wash. He received his certificate of ordination and was appointed as superintendent of the Central Washington District by Bishop Artice Wright, state bishop in July 2002, and became affiliated with the Church of God in Christ, United under the leadership of Bishop Artice Wright, Portland, Ore. He was appointed as pastor of Grace Temple Ministries COGIC, United (formerly Everlasting COGIC), until his health death. He loved fishing, tinkering with his “old green” (previously orange) pickup and driving friends around in his recently acquired motor home.
Survivors include one daughter, April D. Burns of Norfolk, Va.; one son, Justin E. Burns of Lorton, Va.; nine brothers, Elder Marion (Lucille) Burns and John H. Burns, all of Bridgeport, Conn., Eugene Burns and John Johnson, both of New York, Howard D. Johnson and wife of Atlanta, Larry (Janifer) Burns of Petersburg, Va., Rufus (Norma) Burns of Teaneck, N.J., Ezekiel (Jeanette) Burns of Sumter, and Lester (Amy) Burns of Stone Mountain, Ga.; six sisters, Eva Wright and Dorothy Ford, both of New York, Mary L. Davis of Phoenix, Ariz., Sarah Richardson of Bridgeport, Conn., Susan Blackwell and Ada Wright, both of Sumter; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
