Carol Claudette Leach, age 61, wife of Allen Leach, died on Monday, June 30, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Camden, a daughter of the late Rev. Luther Claude Evans Sr. and the late Lessie Belle Bullock Evans. She owned the Pluperfect Cleaning Service and was a former owner of “The Wig Tree.” She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to her husband are one son, Daniel O. Caines Jr. of Sumter; three daughters, Melody L. Caines of Sumter, Janet D. Putman of Arab, Ala., and Jennifer A. Bramlett of Sumter; one stepson, Shannon Leach of Savannah, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Michelle Evans of Columbia and Deborah Critchlow of Pinewood; two brothers, Lennie C. “Buddy” Evans of Greenville and L.C. Evans and his wife, Celeste, of Summerville; one sister, Betty Ray of Camden and one half-sister, Peggy Branham of Camden; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Joanne White; one half-sister, Mable Dixon; and one half-brother, Jack Evans.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Huggins officiating.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

LYNCHBURG — John E. “J.E.” Nesbitt Jr., 83, husband of Louise Gibbons Nesbitt, died Monday, June 30, 2003.
Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late John E. Nesbitt Sr. and the late Luna Corbett Nesbitt.
Mr. Nesbitt was a member and deacon of Lynchburg First Baptist Church. He was retired from Korn Industries as the plant maintenance supervisor with 37 years of service. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a recipient of the Silver Star. He served in the theaters of Africa, Sicily and Italy.
Surviving are his wife of Lynchburg; one son, John E. Nesbitt III of Lynchburg; one daughter, Terry Nesbitt Mauldin of Simpsonville; two grandchildren, Eddie Mauldin and Joy Mauldin; one great-grandchild, Hannah Mauldin.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lynchburg First Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Belcher officiating.
Burial will be in the Lynchburg Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Baby Marissa Elizabeth Lewis died June 29, 2003, at MUSC, Charleston.
Born June 23, 2003, at MUSC, Charleston, she was a daughter of Michael Lewis Jr. and Nyetta Hill Lewis.
Survivors besides her parents include one sister, Porsha Lewis of Charleston; grandparents, George and Elizabeth Hill of Sumter, Maxine Pearson of Manning and Michael Lewis Sr. of Bronx, N.Y.; great-grandparents, Bertha Hill of Sumter, Willean Hilton of Manning and Sarah Lewis of Albany, Ga.; and a host of other special relatives.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Jamar Lewis; and one sister, Monique Lewis.

MARY M. CARRAWAY
PINEWOOD — Mrs. Mary “Johnnie” James Moore Carraway, a daughter of the late Robin James and Ella Maconico James, was born Jan. 12, 1909, in Clarendon County. She slipped peacefully into eternal rest at her home on Sunday morning, June 29, 2003. She was twice married, first to Robert “Bubba” Moore and, after his passing, to Fred Carraway, who also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Carraway was a lifelong member of Antioch Union Methodist Episcopal (also known as “New Branch”) Church. She accepted Christ as a young adult and remained faithful to the end of her life. She was a member of the missionary society, ministerial wives alliance club and a former member of the senior choir. She also participated in the missionary night program at the Union Methodist Episcopal Church Annual Conference for many years.
She is survived by the following loved ones who will forever cherish lasting memories of her influence in their lives: a son, Wendell C. Moore and his wife, Daisy, of Pinewood; two daughters, Josephine Richardson and her husband, Ransom, of Rimini, and Ruth Moore James of Brunswick, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Willie G. Moore of Pinewood; two sisters, Ethel Heyward of Sumter and Rosa T. Robinson and her husband, Richard, of Pinewood; one brother-in-law, Levi Moore and his wife, Lucille, of Brunswick, N.C.; five sisters-in-law, Anna N. James, Louise T. James, Martha Ann James and Margaret Moore Green, all of Pinewood, and Mary Moore Benjamin, a resident of the state of Florida; 26 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Carraway was also preceded in death by twin sons, Paul and Silas Moore; a daughter, Margaret Carraway Gamble Smoot; four brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Antioch UME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Charlie Thomas and the Rev. Richard James. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.
The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. Wendell and Mrs. Daisy Moore of 6435 Panola Road in Pinewood and at the home, 25 Floodtown Road, Pinewood.
Viewing will take place at Community Funeral Home today from 1:45 p.m. until 9 p.m. and again Wednesday from 8:30 until 10:30 a.m. The body will be placed in state from noon Wednesday at Antioch UME Church until the hour of service.
Grandsons, stewards and trustees will serve as pallbearers, and granddaughters, stewardesses and missionaries as flower bearers.

MAYESVILLE — Flossie Williams Small, 95, widow of Willie Small, died June 26, 2003, at Christ Hospital, Jersey City, N.J. Born Oct. 10, 1907, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late George and Allie Williams. She received her education in the public schools of Lee County.
Survivors include one daughter, Edna Wilson of Jersey City, N.J.; one brother, James Williams of Bishopville; a special cousin, Waddell Williams of Sumter; four grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Williams; and four sisters, Patience Brown, Bertha Wilson, Mary Harriett and Susie M. Williams.
The remains will be placed in the church at noon Thursday.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday from Ebenezer AME Church, Mayesville, with the Rev. Leo Chapman Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Vermel M. Humes.

Jerome Johnson, 31, died June 30, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 23, 1971, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Johnny Johnson and Lue Emma Tuomey Johnson. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1991 graduate of Maywood High School. He later attended adult education class and the Sumter Rehabilitation Center.
Survivors include two brothers, Hezekiah Johnson and Willie Johnson, both of the home; five sisters, Johnnie Mae Stukes, Evelena Johnson and Teresa Johnson, all of Sumter, Laura Johnson and Lether Mae Johnson, both of the home; one grandmother, Vermell McCauley Temoney of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Robert and Emma Doney Temoney Sr.; paternal grandparents, Henry and Molly White Johnson; and a nephew, Mannello Fitzgerald Brown Sr.
The remains will be placed in the church at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

John Bingley “J.B.” Hilton Sr., 80, husband of Elizabeth “Lib” Newman Hilton, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at Baptist Medical Center in Columbia.
Born in Berkeley County, he was the son of the late Paul Tillman Hilton and the late Gussie Welch Hilton. Mr. Hilton was a member and deacon of Grace Baptist Church, where he also was a member of the choir and director of the fifth- and sixth-grade Sunday school class for 55 years. He was a former president of the Sumter Lions Club; was currently a board member of the Farm Bureau Insurance Co.; a former president of Flying Squares; a member of the American Legion Post No. 15; a member of the Sumter Wateree Hunting Club; was retired from the Atlantic Coastline Railroad; and was a retired farmer. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the 747th Railway Battalion.
Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a son, Dr. John B. Hilton Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, Patricia Limoges and husband, Neal, of Sumter; two brothers, Harold Hilton of Ridgeville and Tillman Hilton of Charleston; three sisters, Catherine Dantzler and Bertha Lee Stoudemire, both of Holly Hill, and Laverne Blocker of Charleston; six grandchildren, John B. Hilton III, Margaret Hilton, Tracy Watson Spigner and husband, Jeffrey, Sarah Limoges, Alex Limoges and Kate Limoges.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Baptist Church with Dr. James Chandler officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
