Born April 17, 1945, in Dalzell, he was a son of Maggie Mae Porter. He worked and lived in Columbia for 10 years.
Survivors besides his mother include one brother, Richard Bradford of Dalzell; and two sisters, Marie Bradford of Columbia and Maggie Johnson of Dalzell.
He was preceded in death by one sister, one brother, two uncles and two aunts.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Grant Hill Baptist Church, Dalzell, with the Rev. R.E. Bennett, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Grant Hill Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Dalzell.

Josie McKenzie Shorter, 77, wife of Clyde J. Shorter, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Harmon Harrison McKenzie and the late Arcie Smith McKenzie.
Mrs. Shorter was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church and was retired from Winn-Dixie with 30 years of service.
Surviving are her husband of Sumter; one son, Bill Jackson and his wife, Nancy, of West Columbia; one daughter, Peggy Edmunds and husband, D.D., of Sumter; two brothers, Dale McKenzie and Richard “Sonny Boy” McKenzie, both of Kingstree; one sister, Jean Kemmerlin of Sumter; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Edmunds Wall, DeS Edmunds, Heidi McGee and Jody McGee; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Anderson and the Rev. Bruce Sayre officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Kennedy Bible Class of St. Marks United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.

ELLIOTT — Julia Mae Fortune Scott, 54, wife of William Claude Scott, died June 30, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.
Born April 7, 1949, in Bishopville, she was a daughter of Julia Toney Fortune and the late Jeremiah Fortune. At an early age, she joined the New Zion AME Church, Wisacky. She attended the public schools of Lee County and was a member of the Mount Pleasant High School Class of 1967.
She relocated to New York, where she worked at the New York Telephone Co. until she moved to New Jersey. She returned home to Elliott in 1986.
Survivors besides her husband and mother include one daughter, Robin (Clausell) Closton of Lamar; one son, Fitzgerald Wilson of Bishopville; two sisters, Catherine Luckey and Rosa Gregg, both of Elliott; one brother, Eddie Lee (Bonita) Fortune of Houston; two stepdaughters, Judy (Anthony) Fleming of Elliott and Linda (James) Burgess of Thomasville, N.C.; one niece, Brandolynn Gregg; one grandnephew, Brandon Gregg, whom she reared in the home; three grandchildren; father-in-law, Sam C. Scott of the home; nine aunts; six uncles; nine sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at New Zion AME Church, Wisacky, with the Rev. Franklin W. Spears, pastor, assisted by the Rev. John A. Sellers and Pastor Charles Foxe. Burial will be in Broad Branch Cemetery, Wisacky.
The body will lie in state Saturday at noon.

MANNING — Margaret “Mutt” Henry, 66, died July 2, 2003, at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility.
Born June 11, 1937, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Maggie and Mitchell Washington and adopted daughter of the late Robert and Alva Davis Henry.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Jackson of South Carolina; seven sisters, Lillie Mae, Daisy Belle and Louvinia, all of South Carolina, Rosa and Lubertha, both of Pennsylvania, Carrie of North Carolina and Susie of New York; four brothers, Jessie, Allan Jr. and Bennie, all of South Carolina, and Jessie of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two special friends, Sammie of South Carolina and Hattie Plowden; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Job’s Mortuary, 312 S. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Mayesville Cemetery, Mayesville.

PINEWOOD — Martha Pauline McGuire Hendrix, 85, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.
Born March 16, 1918, in Buffalo Valley, Okla., she was a daughter of the late W.E. and Lavenia Springs McGuire.
She was retired from Denton State School in Denton, Texas, and was of the Presbyterian faith.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lavenia Ardis and her husband, James, of Pinewood; a half-sister, Diane McGuire Stringer of Owasso, Okla.; two half-brothers, Dr. W.E. McGuire of Moore, Okla., and Rutherford “Ruddy” McGuire of Alabama; two grandchildren, Jimmy Ardis of Sumter and Melody A. Ardis of Pinewood; a great-grandson, J.J. Ardis of Phoenix, Ariz.; a great-granddaughter, Kattie Lavenia Ardis of Pinewood.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Born in Georgetown County, he was a son of the late Edward and Gertie Morgan Gray.
He was a graduate of A&T College, Greensboro, N.C. He taught in Zebulon, N.C., and McBee, S.C., and retired from Stephan Chemical Co. Survivors include one son, Nicholas Gerard (Pearl) Gray of Oxford, N.C.; one daughter, Dorothy Almeta Gray of Ventura, Calif.; one brother, Edward Gray of Charleston; one sister, Verna Lee (Arthur) Dozier of Conway; sister-in-law, Ida Mae Gray of Westminster, Mass.; and brother-in-law, Rufus Davis of Johnsonville.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. from Jerusalem AME Church in Hemingway with the Rev. James Frost officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. William (affectionately called “Bill”) Bonapart, widower of the late Diana Bonapart of San Diego, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at 5090 Cane Savannah Road.
Born Oct. 30, 1935, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Wilhelmenia Bonapart and Charlie Choice.

Deacon Hiram Jenkins Jr, 82, died July 4, 2003, at Mariner Health of Sumter-West. He is survived by his wife Leacy Hunter Jenkins.
Born December 8, 1920 in Sumter, he was the son of the late Hiram Jenkins Sr. and Mattie Josey Jenkins.
Plans for the services are incomplete.

Helen Kellett Lucas, 88, wife of Louie Luke Lucas, died Friday, July 4, 2003 at her residence.
Mrs. Lucas was born in Greenville, S.C., a daughter of the late Isaac Pinckney and Grace Henderson Kellett. She was a retired accounting clerk at The Rouse Company in Columbia, Md. She was a member of the Church of the Holy Comforter-Episcopal in Sumter, a volunteer at Shaw Air Force Base and a volunteer for various other community organizations.
Surviving in addition to her husband of Sumter are one daughter, Karen Lucas and her husband Robert Barrett of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister, Mary Kellett Robinson of Greenville, S.C.; one brother-in-law, Roy “Bud” McKinney of Greenville, S.C.; one sister-in-law, Mac Kellett of Greenville, SC; one grandson, Matthew Barrett and his wife Sara of St. Louis, Mo. and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, John Kellett, and one sister, Dorothy Kellett McKinney.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today, July 6, 2003, at Church of the Holy Comforter-Episcopal on Main Street in Sumter with the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating.

COATESVILLE, Pa. — Elder David McBride, 70, husband of Pearl Ladson McBride, died July 6, 2003, at Brandywine Hospital, Coatesville, Pa.
Born Sept. 29, 1932, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Hammie and Mattie McBride. He and his family moved to Philadelphia, Pa., in 1965 and became affiliated with the Fire Baptized Holiness Church under the leadership of Pastor Moses of the Gist Liberty FBH Church, Camden, N.J. He later served at Gethsemane FBH Church under the leadership of the Rev. C.W. Williams and the late Bishop F.C. Canty, ruling elder of the Pennsylvania District. Elder McBride was sent to pastor at Fort Hill FBH Church (1969-1971) and Mount Pleasant FBH Church (1972-1974). He was later sent to the New Jersey District, where he pastored New Bethel FBH Church (1976-1979). Elder McBride was assigned to the Baltimore, Md., District to lead the New Jerusalem FBH Church (1979-1990). He returned to the Pennsylvania District a second time to pastor the St. Peter FBH Church for one year, after which he moved to the Washington/Virginia District to serve New Hope FBH Church (1991-2001). He was sent for a third assignment to the Pennsylvania District to serve as pastor of the First Apostle FBH Church, Coatesville, Pa., and was appointed elder of the Pennsylvania District by the Rt. Rev. Patrick Frazier, on Dec. 9, 2002.
Survivors besides his wife of 47 years include 11 children; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Rosa L. McBride Gibbs of Sumter; one adopted sister, Bertha M. Singleton of Sumter; one aunt, Virginia (John) Hayward of Philadelphia, Pa.; one uncle, Willie(Mattie) Laws of Bridgeport, Conn.; four sisters-in-law, Easter Ladson of Sumter, Evangelist Rev. Thelma Lawrence and Evelyn Hayes, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Rosa Ladson of New York; three brothers-in-law, Leroy Ladson of New York, Deacon Lindsay Lawrence of Philadelphia, Pa., and Roy Gibbs of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Eleanor Curtis Boone, 72, wife of Theodore E. “Ted” Boone Jr., died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Horace Brogdon Curtis Sr. and the late Eleanor Kolb Curtis.
Mrs. Boone was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was a member of the FaHoLo Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Sumter Art Association and the Poinsett Garden Club. She was a former officer of the United Methodist Women and a former board member of the Salvation Army. She was a volunteer for Sumter Habitat for Humanity.
Surviving are her husband of Sumter; five sons, Dr. James Hoyt Rogers Jr. of Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic, Dr. Richard Curtis Rogers and wife, Debbie, of Greenville, Theodore E. “Trey” Boone III of Columbia, James Alan Boone and wife, Cathy, of Columbia, and Robert George Boone of Columbia; two daughters, Cathy Boone Weeks and husband, Karl, of Columbia, and Captain Debbie Rogers Fisette of Sumter; a brother, Horace Brogdon Curtis Jr. of Sumter; two sisters, Margie Curtis Ward of Sumter and Jane Curtis Ward of Hampton, Va.; and seven grandchildren, Matthew Curtis Rogers, James Edward Lambert, Amanda Kathryn Rogers, Jennifer Leigh Boone, James Adam Rogers, Sarah Elizabeth Boone, and Virginia Brook Boone.

James Porter, 77, husband of Ethel Lee Woods Porter, died July 9, 2003, at Dorn VA Medical Center, Columbia.
Born Aug. 25, 1925, in Dalzell, he was a son of the late David and Annie Sumpter Porter. He attended the public schools of Sumter. At an early age, he became a member of Joshua Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. He later worked as a mechanic.
Survivors besides his wife include six daughters, Mary Busby (Marion) and Everta Porter, all of Columbia, Rubbie Govan of Las Vegas, Nev., Doris Williams (Michael) and Linda Coles (Jeffrey), all of Richmond, Va., Ethel Jackson (Sidney) of New Jersey; one son, James Porter Jr. of Sumter; five sisters, Alma Mitchell and Ruth Cockley, both of New Jersey, Rosa Lee Ballard, Aggie Bradley and Nancy Porter, all of Sumter; one brother, Isaiah Porter of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Chapel, 710 Manning Ave., Sumter, 29150, with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
