Born Aug. 27, 1928, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Ruff and Mattie Copeland Brunson.

Edith Fannie Herring Jolly, 82, wife of William Gordon Jolly Jr., died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Little Rock, S.C., she was a daughter of the late McKeever Herring and the late Blanche Ratley Herring.
Mrs. Jolly was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church. She was retired from Sumter Casket Co. and later retired from S.H. Kress Co. as the lunch counter manager.
Surviving are her husband of 65 years of Sumter; three sons, William T. (Bill) Jolly of Visalia, Calif., Wayne J. Jolly and Harry E. Jolly, both of Sumter; two daughters, Eunice J. Baker and Clara J. Touchberry, both of Sumter; a brother, Reedy Herring of Sumter; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Morris and Sudie Coker.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Mendle Baker and the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating.
Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Doc Jolly, Johnathon Baker, Stephen Touchberry, Al Bolt, Mike Love and Tracy Jolly.

MAJOR McFADDEN Jr.
NEW ZION — Major McFadden Jr., 78, husband of Clara Fulton McFadden, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital, Columbia.
Born Nov. 10, 1924, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Major McFadden Sr. and Eddie Burgess McFadden. He received his formal education at the Goodwill Parochial School. At an early age, he sought the need for a personal Savior and joined Melina Presbyterian Church. He was an active member of the trustee and usher boards and the men’s council. He was a 57 year member of Golden Gate Lodge No. 78. He retired from Campbell Soup Co. in 1987 after 18 years.
Survivors include four sons, Major (Ella) McFadden III of Baltimore, Md., Delbert McFadden of Alcolu, Kenneth McFadden of Riverdale, Md., and Jake McFadden of Rembert; three daughters, Clarita, Senorita and Cynthia McFadden, all of Landover, Md.; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sons, James Allen “Spark,” William “Dub,”and Eddie “Jackie”; two sisters, Ruth and Angie Kennedy; and one brother, Roy McFadden.
The remains will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Melina Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
Pallbearers will be members of trustee board and Golden Gate Lodge No. 78.

SUMMERTON — Thelma Broadway Thomas Furse, 95, widow of Benjamin B. Furse, and first married to the late John S. Thomas, died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.
Born Sept. 13, 1907, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late Judson F. and Maude Hilton Broadway Coskrey. She was a former secretary and retired buyer for Capital Department Store in Sumter, and a member and choir member of Summerton Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Billie Bradham of Sumter and Helen T. Owen of Florence; a son, John E. Thomas of Sumter; a half-sister, Mary Bell of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James D. Thomas.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Summerton Baptist Church. The Revs. Rob Pierce and Thomas Mellette will officiate. Burial will follow in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.
Grandsons and a great-grandson will serve as pallbearers.

Born Dec. 14, 1962, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Eartha Lee Johnson and Stephen L. Dickey. She attended the public schools of Sumter and was employed by Cutler Hammer.
Survivors include four daughters, Elizabeth Johnson, Joyce Ann Johnson, Jessica Johnson and Sheila Denise Anderson, all of Sumter; two sons, Michael Johnson and Kevin Anderson, both of Sumter; grandparents, Susie Mae Anderson and Albert Anderson of Sumter; four grandchildren, Late’rer Covington, Roderick Zishawn Holmes Jr., Raheim A. Burroughs and Jaheim T. Burroughs; a special cousin, Sheryl Ann Smoot (Nathan) of Sumter; a special friend, Jerry Smoot; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Eliza Atkinson Tolson, 80, widow of Frank Tolson, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003.
Born in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Purdy Atkinson and the late Lula Logan Atkinson.
Mrs. Tolson was a member of Faith Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are a daughter, Shelby Mitchum Vaughan and husband, Patrick, of Sumter; four sisters, Evelyn Stokes and husband, Stanley, of Bishopville, Ila A. Herrington, Ruth Weatherford and husband, Marion, and Thelma Elmore, all of Sumter; two brothers, James P. Atkinson and wife, Kathryn, and Hubert Atkinson and wife, Lorena, all of Sumter; three grandchildren, Jerry McLeod of Sumter, Ellen Cassity and husband, Eric, and Allen McLeod and wife, Jessica, all of Columbia; and seven great-grandchildren.

Born Oct. 31, 1987, in Sumter County, he was a son of Barbara Taylor of Dalzell and James Pearson of the home. James was a student at Crestwood High School, Sumter.
Survivors include one brother, Willie James Taylor of Dalzell; three sisters, Belinda Taylor of the home, Jennifer Peeples and Brionna Pearson, both of Bishopville; and a paternal grandmother, Hattie Mae Pearson of Rembert.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Abel Jennings Taylor and David Taylor Sr.; and his paternal grandfather, Boston Pearson Jr.

She was a daughter of the late George Washington Sanders and Sueanna Singletary Sanders. She attended Berkley High School and Morris College. She taught in Florence County public schools. She was retired from Lower Florence County Hospital, Lake City.
Survivors include four daughters, Sandra (Calvin) Whetstone of Fort Washington, Md., Mozell (Charles) Smedley of Matteson, Ill., Brazzilia Nowlin and Easter Nowlin of Temple Hills, Md.; one sister, Ella Rae Reid of Moncks Corner; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

ALCOLU — Leona James Hudson, 93, widow of Harry Hudson Sr., died Monday, July 28, 2003.
Born Oct. 11, 1909, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Hannibal James and Octavia McFadden James. She was educated at the Congruity Parochial School. She was a lifelong member of Congruity Presbyterian Church, having served as a deacon, trustee and member of the senior choir. She was also a member of YWCA Lodge No. 22. She was the founder of the Community Tiny Tots Savings Club and Feed-A-Child program.
Survivors include four sons, Harry (Rosa) Hudson Jr. of Baltimore, Carnell (Ruby) Hudson and Leroy Hudson, both of Roxburg, Mass., and Raleigh Hudson of Bronx, N.Y.; a grandson she reared as her own, Steve (Angela) Hudson of Atlanta; three daughters, Ruth Epps and Louise (Lewis) Epps, both of Alcolu, and Catherine (Furman) Wilson of Baltimore; two granddaughters she reared as her own, Gwendolyn (Donald) Harris of Charlotte, N.C., and Doris Felder of Manning; two brothers, Robert (Bascom) James of Gable and Johnny James of Sumter; one sister, Ruby Billie of Gable; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a god daughter, Francina Johnson of Manning.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Freddie Hudson; three sons, Thomas James, Robert Hudson and Herman Hudson; two daughters, Francis Hudson and Mildred James; five brothers, Aaron James, Leon James, Gilbert James, William James and Raymond James; and four sisters, Lucinda McBride, Josephine Clark, Almeta Miller and Alice James.
