Janie Osborne Kendrick, 98, wife of the late Henry James Kendrick, died Sept. 24, 2003, at Tuomey Healthcare System.
Born July 12, 1905, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late William and Hattie Haile Osborne. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in the Rafting Creek Baptist Church where she was an active and dutiful member. In 1925, she joined High Hill Baptist Church and was a dedicated soldier for 78 years until the time of her death. In 1946, she was elected president of the Ushers Ministry and held that position for 14 years. She also served in numerous ministries throughout her lifetime in the church. She was a consecrated Christian who was untiring in her effort to live a meaningful and peaceful life.
She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Morris College High School. She was employed as a domestic worker in Sumter and New York and also was a substitute teacher at Rafting Creek Elementary School. Later, she enjoyed farming as an occupation and worked very hard to make it successful.
On Feb. 23, 1925, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Henry James Kendrick and to this loving union a child, James Kendrick Sr., was added. They shared in a closely committed marriage and the addition of their son produced a loving family unit that always remained close. She was a quiet, reflective woman who never spoke above a whisper, yet was a strict disciplinarian. She never spoke negatively about anyone or any situation. She was passionate about farming, cooking and growing beautiful flowers. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her.
