HELEN S. CAVENDISH
Helen Stone Cavendish, 77, of 401 Robbins Ave., widow of Robert J. Cavendish, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Edgar Jones Stone and Olive Ernestine Davis. Mrs. Cavendish was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church in Sumter. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Survivors include a daughter, Elisa Cavendish Grier of Florence; a stepson, J. Brad Cavendish of Austin, Texas; two grandsons; a nephew; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Olive Davis Price. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sumter Humane Society, 1140 S. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC, or to the American Diabetes Association. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home, 2402 S. Irby St., Florence. GEORGE D. GRIFFIN
George David Griffin, 48, husband of Alice Harrelson Griffin, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at his home. Born Jan. 22, 1953, in Sumter, he was a son of Joe E. Griffin and the late Mary Bartlette Griffin. Mr. Griffin was a member of Green Acres Assembly of God Church. Survivors besides his wife and father, both of Sumter, include two sons, James A. Mount III and David Joe "D.J." Griffin; a daughter, Dorian Strickland; a brother, Joby Griffin; four sisters, Nancy Graham, Ruby Allsbrook, Sandra Springs and Joan Yarborough, all of Sumter; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Collins and the Rev. Buddy Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Pallbearers will be Randy Springs Jr., Mark Yarborough, Wayne Allsbrook, D.J. Kelley, Wayne Poole and Cecil Mitchum Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Osteen and Allen Grooms. FELIX LUCKEY
BISHOPVILLE - Felix Luckey, husband of Eunice Luckey, died Monday, May 28, 2001. He was a son of the late Mable Carpenter. Mr. Luckey served in the U.S. Army and Air Force for 20 years. He was a job recruiter for several years and a volunteer recruiter for Allen University. He was a member of Cousar Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent until he became disabled. He was an elder, a clerk of session, a member of the choir and a Boy Scout leader. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Gregory and Felix D’John; a mother-in-law, Annie Mae Dozier; a sister-in-law, Johnnie; a brother-in-law, James; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Cousar Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Phillip Mixon and the Rev. Ernest Jackson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the National Armed Service Cemetery in Florence. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

Augustine Barry Medeiros, 44, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at the Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach. Born Sept. 25, 1956, in Providence, R.I., he was a son of Augustine and Dorothy Medeiros. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Independence for three years. He lived in Myrtle Beach, where he was employed by the Ocean Blue Cab Co. Survivors besides his parents include a sister, Theresa Jones of Sumter; a brother, Gregory Medeiros of Sumter; two nephews, Robert Crump and Seth Medeiros of Sumter; and a niece, Mary Medeiros of Sumter. Funeral services were privately held for the family.
RALTH M. RACHOW
COLUMBIA - Ralth Martin Rachow, 40, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at 767 St. Andrews Road in Columbia. Born Feb. 25, 1961, he was a son of Robert L. Colclough and Brunhilde Loth Rachow Colclough. He attended Zweibruckn Middle School Air Force Base, Germany, and Socastee High School. He was a 1970 graduate of Manning High School. He attended Loma Linda College in Victorvile, Calif. Mr. Rachow was a member of a Presbyterian Church in Hesperia, Calif. He was employed as an assistant manager with Hilltop Restaurant in Columbia. Survivors besides his parents of Alcolu include a brother, David Colclough of Paris Island; a paternal grandmother, Rebecca Colclough of Alcolu; an uncle; an aunt; and two great-uncles. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Franklin Colclough officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

CHARLESTON - Maggie "Tuti" Sweat, widow of Clifton Sweat, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston. Born June 10, 1913, in Andrews, she was a daughter of the late Melvin and Annie Williams McCullough. She attended South Carolina public schools. In her youth, she became a member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She was a cook and a housewife. Survivors include a brother, Willie McCullough of Rochester, N.Y.; two sisters, Sennie Mae Latta of Philadelphia, Pa., and Alamae Reed of Rochester; eight grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Josie Richburg; two sisters, Mabel Hazelton and Flossie Allison; five brothers, Wesley, Andrew, Walter, James and Sammie Moyd; two grandchildren, Elease Richburg and James Lee Richburg; and a great-grandchild, Davonta Dashun Mack. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Paxville with the Rev. Clifford Gaymon, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr., the Rev. D.L. Grant and the Rev. J.H. Pringle. Burial will be in Calvary Baptist Church cemetery in Pinewood. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday. TURBEVILLE - Marshall Welch, 68, husband of Harriet Lynn Scott Welch, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his home after a brief illness. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Jake Welch and Hester Atkinson Welch. Mr. Welch was a construction worker and was a member of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Turbeville include two daughters, Sarah Lynn Welch Sharenberger and Marri Anne Welch, both of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Marshall Jamie Welch of Turbeville; and three brothers, Bill Welch and Jack Welch, both of Turbeville, and Tom Welch of Timmonsville. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Lonnie, Coker, J.W., Glenn and Charlie Welch. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church. James Linvel Price, 84, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at McElveen Manor. Born in Johnson City, Tenn., he was a son of the late Jessie Price and Jettie Patterson Price. Mr. Price was a retired Greyhound Bus Driver and U.S. Army World War II veteran. Survivors include a daughter, Laura P. Elam of Kissimmee, Fla. Rickey Leon Williams, 34, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 1, 1966, in Sumter County, he was a son of Jessie Mae White and stepson of Milton White. He attended Sumter County District 2 public schools. He was employed by DeAngelo Co. at Shaw Air Force Base until his health failed. He truly loved his family and his friends. Survivors besides his mother and stepfather include a grandmother, Evelina Williams of Horatio; a brother, James Williams of Bronx, N.Y.; and a sister, Stephanie White of Dalzell. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John W. Williams; and an uncle, Abraham Harold Williams. A wake service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel at Williams Funeral Home, 821 Main St. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Willow Grove AME Church, Horatio. Burial will be in the church yard cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of his grandmother, 3365 S.C. 261, Horatio.
