NEW ZION — Alfred Vernell Smith, 59, departed this life on Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at his residence in New Zion.
He was born on May 21, 1943, a son of the late Mr. Wade Hampton Smith and Mrs. Isielene Eugenia McClary Smith. He received his former educational training from the Lodabar Grammar School and was a 1961 graduate of Walker-Gamble High School. He continued his education at the Temple School of Business in Washington, D.C.
He was formerly employed as a data processor at Hahn’s Shoe Co. in Washington, D.C., and Merita Bakery in Florence, and retired from Model Dye in Sumter.
He was a member of Friendship Presbyterian Church (USA).
Loved ones who will cherish his memories forever are: one son, Mr. Aldric Smith of Lynchburg; three daughters, Mrs. Maria Smith of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Tracie Smith of Beltsville, Md., and Mrs. Ashley Wright and her husband, Jermaine, of Jacksonville, N.C.; a brother, Mr. Wade Smith Jr. and his wife, Ada, of New Zion; four sisters, Mrs. Gloria Frieson and her husband, Ulysses, of Florence, Mrs. Charlena Timmons and her husband, James, of Quinby, Mrs. Slyvia Ivey and Mrs. Mirian Smith, both of New Zion; three grandchildren; an aunt, Mrs. Gertrude McDuffie of Kingstree; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Patricia Smith of New Zion; nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
Funeral services for the late Mr. Alfred Vernell Smith will be held at 11 a.m. today at Friendship Presbyterian Church (USA) in New Zion. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Stanley W. Jones, pastor, will conduct the religious services.

Lou Bertha Mack McCall, 83, widow of William McCall, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 19, 1919, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Jarett Mack and Martha Deas Mack. She attended Sumter County public schools.
Survivors include four sons, Elder Clarence McCall and Elder Jerry McCall, both of Rembert, Herbert McCall of New Jersey and Olin McCall of Springfield, Va.; a stepson, Deacon Harvin Grant of Rembert; a foster son, Leroy Mack of Rembert; three daughters, Annie Lee and Azalee, both of Rembert, and Mary Singleton of Sumter; two stepdaughters, Bertha Alston of Rembert and Wilhelmenia Lee of Columbia; two brothers, James Mack of Sumter and Clifton Mack of Philadelphia; two sisters, Thelma Reid of Sumter and Vermell Williams of Newark, N.J.; two special caretakers, Dina McCall and Frances Barett; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by six children and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Grant Hill Baptist Church, Black River Road, Rembert, with the Rev. R.E. Bennett, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. R. Williams, the Rev. H. Bradley and Bishop M. Pressley. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Granddaughters will serve as flower bearers.

Bertie Louise Brown McLeod, 73, wife of Len McLeod, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Lexington, she was a daughter of the late John H. Brown and Lila Mae Jeffcoat Brown. She was a member of Open Bible Baptist Church.
Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include three sons, Eddie Connor and Jamie Connor, both of Sumter, and Calvin Connor of Texas; two daughters, Sharon Berry of Sumter and Lori Johnson of Wisconsin; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jacqueline Connor.

GABLE — Sarah Hudson Cooper, 95, widow of James J. Cooper, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Hopewell HealthCare Center in Sumter.
Born Sept. 28, 1907, in Mayesville section of Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Jenkins Cooper and Dora Fleming Cooper. She attended the public schools of Mayesville Institute. In her youth she joined Ebenezer AME Church in Mayesville. After marriage she joined Melina Presbyterian Church in Sardinia. She served on the senior choir, deaconess board, and as a member of the Eastern Star of the St. Mary Chapter No. 165.
Survivors include two sons, Jenkins Cooper and his wife, Deloris, of Gable and George Cooper of Sumter; two brothers, Sylvester Hudson and Isiah Hudson and his wife, Hellen, both of Baltimore; four sisters, Evelyn Durant of Sumter, Sallie Thomas and her husband, Elijah, of Baltimore, Ollie Hampton of Mayesville and Victoria King of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Carli, Herbert, Albertis, McQuillan Hudson and Jenkins Hudson Jr.; and two sisters, Rosa Green and Olivia Wilson.
Wake services will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel.

Born Sept. 14, 1960, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Isabell White and Lawrence Isaac. She attended Sumter County public schools and Central Carolina Technical College. In her youth, she joined Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she served on the Sunbeam Choir, junior choir, junior ushers, Bolden Ensemble, and as church secretary. She later joined Bonnettsville Baptist Church, where she served as secretary. She was employed for a number of years as a home health nurse with the Personal Care Service of Sumter. Survivors besides her husband include a daughter, Shanita Antrell Joe of the home; a stepson, Phillip Lamont Stuckey of Bishopville; two brothers, Eddie Lee and Johnnie of Sumter; and a sister, Flora Lee White of Sumter.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Etta Mae Addison. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry W. Barnes, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Barbara Lash, Robert Thompson, Telly Gadson, A. Hill and Stanley Hayes. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery.
