MANNING — Hattie McCants Cooper McFadden, 94, widow of both John Fleet Cooper and Paul McFadden, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born April 30, 1908, in Gable, she was a daughter of the late Richard McCants and Elmer White McCants. She attended the Melina Parochial School in Sardinia. In her youth she joined Melina Presbyterian Church, where she later served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the St. Marys Chapter of the Eastern Star No. 156 and the Heroines of Jerico No. 12.
Survivors include four sons, Willie McCants of Alcolu, Otis Cooper and his wife, Betty, of Washington, D.C., Douglas Cooper of Bronx, N.Y., and Thomas Cooper and his wife, Eva, of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two daughters, Johnnie Mae Benbow and her husband, James, of Manning and Mary Lee and her husband, Wilbur, of Bronx, N.Y.; a granddaughter she raised as her own, Jana M. Murray of Wilson; a foster daughter, Margie Jones and her husband, Wayne, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters, Erie Rose and Marie McCants, both of Gable, and Dorothy McCants of Manning; 39 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sons, Jerimiah, Napoleon, Luther and Oliver Cooper.
Wake services will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Melina Presbyterian Church USA in Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
Golden Gate Lodge No. 78 will serve as pallbearers.
St. Marys Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 156 and Heroines of Jerico No. 12 will serve as floral bearers. The casket will be placed in the church at noon.

Master Eddie Lee Pringle III died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born Dec. 8, 2002, in Columbia, he was a son of Shonda T. Miller and Eddie Lee Pringle Jr.
Survivors besides his parents include maternal grandparents, Juanita Miller and Roosevelt Levy; paternal grandparents, Eddie Lee Pringle and Bettie Bennett; maternal great-grandfather, Joseph Miller; and paternal great-grandfather, Rhuel Pringle.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Little Miss Tytianna F.S. Pringle.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Bradford Cemetery with the Rev. Leroy T. James officiating.

Zola J. Saunders, 87, widow of Ladson F. Saunders, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002.
Born in Salisbury, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Charlie A. and Reese Richardson Johnson. She was a member of Gantt Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include a grandson, Robert L. Saunders; a granddaughter, Christina E. Metro and her husband, Paul, of Florida; a brother, Charles R. Johnson of Florence; and a nephew, Michael Barrs of Sumter.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert L. Saunders; and three sisters, Mary Barrs, Lillie Johnson and Ruth Johnson.

Born June 28, 1918, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late William Herrington and Lucy Wells Herrington. She attended Lee County public schools.
Survivors include three sons, Willie Grant Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Wali Islam of Hartford, Conn., and John Missouri of Kentucky; a brother, Henry Speech of Columbus, Ga.; two sisters, Susie Williams and Willie Mae Martin, both of Rembert; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. CHARLESTON — Silas Pearson Sr., 56, widower of Lessie Mae Butler Pearson, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital.
Born Oct. 2, 1946, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Marion Pearson Sr. and Emma Dow Pearson. He attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1965 graduate of Lincoln High School. He was employed by Madison Industries for 33 years as a supervisor.
Survivors include three sons, Julius Pearson Sr. and Silas Pearson Jr., both of Sumter, and Eric Pearson of Columbia; six brothers, Aaron Pearson, William Pearson, Elijah Pearson, the Rev. Thomas Pearson and Roosevelt Pearson, all of Sumter, and Sulton Pearson of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Mary V. Pearson of Bronx and Martha Kelly of Columbia; and four grandchildren.

BISHOPVILLE — Walter J. Bowman, 77, husband of Genevia Toney Bowman, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at his home in Bishopville.
Born Nov. 19, 1925, in Lee County, he was a son of James and Mary Bowman. He was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church. He worked for a number of years at Reeves Brothers Factory in Bishopville and retired from Mathis Farm.
Survivors include two sons, Levern Bowman of St. Charles and Heriot Bowman of Bishopville; three daughters, Cheryl Bowman of Bishopville, Bettye and Olethia Bowman, both of Baltimore; a brother, Roland Bowman of Paterson, N.J.; two sisters, Mary L. Mickens of Bishopville and Earlene Yeates of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three daughters-in-law, Dora and Gladys Toney, both of Baltimore, and Sandra Bowman of St. Charles; two sisters-in-law, Carrie Bradley of Wisacky and Mamie Bowman of Paterson; a brother-in-law, Elijah Teates of Bishopville; a dedicated niece, Bessie Davis of Bishopville; three grandchildren he raised, Jacquetta, Ricardo and Jennifer Bowman, all of Bishopville; three stepchildren, Corine Carter and Leroy Toney, both of Baltimore, and Johnell Toney of Bishopville; 31 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

BALTIMORE — Thomas Lee “Day” Cooper, 47, companion of Denise Everette, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, in Laplace, La. Born Jan. 30, 1955, in the Gable section of Sumter County, he was a son of Marshall Kennedy and the late Elouise Cooper Jackson, and a stepson of the late Odell Jackson. He attended Walker-Gamble School in New Zion and was a 1974 graduate of Mayewood High School in Sumter. He also attended a Technical College in Baltimore. He was a member of Melina Presbyterian Church USA in Sardinia. After 25 years of service he retired from Giant Food. He was employed with the USA Trucking Co. He was also a member of the East Warrior Motorcycle Club for 20 years.
Survivors besides his companion of the home and his father and his wife, Belinda, of Greenville include four sons, Dwayne T. Born Nov. 15, 1927, in the Scranton section of Florence County, he was a son of the late Rev. Sam Gamble and Edna McFadden Gamble. He attended Florence County public schools. In his youth he joined St. John AME Church, where he served on the steward board. He was a former employee of Coker Builders of Turbeville.
Survivors besides his wife of 56 years of the home include two sons, Woodrow Gamble of Alcolu and Jimmy J. Gamble of the home; five daughters, Victoria McCoy and her husband, Allen, of Forestville, Md., Dorothy White and her husband, Glenn, of Mitchellville, Md., Rebecca Wilson of Scranton, Rachel Muldrow of Seabook, Md., and Mary Lee Gamble of Manning; two sisters, Jessie Burgess and Oveda McFadden, both of Lake City; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Born April 5, 1903, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac Robinson and Minnie Spann Robinson. She attended Sumter County public schools.
Survivors include two sons, Leroy Helton of Maplewood, N.J., and the Rev. George Helton of Sumter; five daughters, Neomi Wilson and Ruby Moses, both of Sumter, Dorothy McCants of Bishopville, Bernice Wilson and Gloria Jean Helton, both of Washington, D.C.; 41 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sons, Ernest, James, Robert and Neal Helton.
