KAY F. LANDRY
SUMMERTON — Kay R. Fromey Landry, 65, wife of William Joseph Landry, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002.
Born in Canastota, N.Y., she was a daughter of Violet Eckerlin Bicknell and the late Paul K. Bicknell Sr. She was formerly of East Syracuse, N.Y. After retirement, she and her husband resided in Summerton, for the past three years.
Survivors besides her husband of Summerton and mother of Easley include three sons, William J. Landry Sr. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Robert Gregory Landry and Joseph Michael Landry, both of Syracuse, N.Y.; a daughter, Teresa Wright of Syracuse; grandchildren, William Jay Landry Jr., Buddy Landry, Melissa Kay Wright, Emma Corrine Wright, Jennifer Clark Landry, Joseph Michael Landry Jr., Michael Thomas Landry, and Brittany Landry; a brother, Paul K. Bicknell of Easley; and a sister, Carole Anderalli of East Syracuse, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, James E. Landry and mother-in-law, Corrine M. Landry.
Memorial mass will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 8, 2003, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton and at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in East Syracuse at a later date.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Post Office Box 1110, Summerton, SC 29148.

MADALINE S. MOORE
Madaline Sanders Moore, 65, wife of Wardell Moore, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 7, 1937, in Mecklenburg County, Va., she was a daughter of Lillian Oliver Reed and the late James Day. She was a graduate of Kingsonton High School in Philadelphia. In her youth, she became a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church. She later moved to Baltimore, where she met and married John W. Sanders and joined Second Antioch Baptist Church. After retirement from the Department of Social Security of Baltimore, she and her family moved to Sumter in 1983. In Sumter she rejoined St. Matthew Baptist Church, where she was a member of the M.G. Walters Inspirational Choir, missionary society, and Deliverance Choir. She was employed at the Daisy Shop of Piggly Wiggly until her illness. On Jan. 7, 2000, she married Wardell Moore.
Survivors besides her husband and mother include four sons, William Sanders and his wife, Geraldine, and Steven Sanders and his wife, Janie, both of Sumter, Melvin Spriggs and Julius Bolger-Bey both of Baltimore; six stepsons, Wardell Moore Jr., Franklin Moore and his wife, Harriet, Wendell Moore and his wife, Emma, Richard Protho, James Protho, and Roger Protho of Sumter; a daughter, Nicole Sanders of Sumter; two stepdaughters, Geraldine Sanders and her husband, William, and Bernadine Moore, both of Sumter; four brothers, Bernard Day, Lenny Scott and Roger Taleaferro all of Baltimore, and Leroy Day of Philadelphia; 12 sisters, Ludelia Williams and her husband, Harold, of Ft. Washington, Md., Mary Delarge, Ophelia Day, Terry Evans and her husband, Perry, Lillie V. McClanahan, and Ronnie McClanahan and her husband, Mark, all of Philadelphia, Lucille Wilborn, Lou-Ethel Farmer, Frankie Rawlings and Frances Griffin, all of Baltimore, Lorraine Day of Carolina County, and Beverly McCleary of St. Mary County; three children she raised as her own, Rosa Wilder White and her husband, Jimmy, of Bloomfield, N.J., Jerome James and his wife, Geraldine, and Ralph Richardson and his wife, Dorothy, both of Sumter; a dedicated caretaker, Gloria Felder of Sumter; special friends, the Rev. and Mrs. M.G. Walters of Sumter; 29 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry Reed and Leroy Moody.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Baptist Church with the Rev. M.G. Walters, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Wilbur Witherspoon and John Platt. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Granddaughters will serve as floral bearers.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. until the hour of service.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home, 835 St. Matthew Church Road.
The family will receive friends at the home, 835 St. Matthew Church Road.

HENRY T. RUSSELL
Henry Thomas Russell, 92, husband of Henrietta Loney Russell, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 17, 1910, in Winnsboro, he was a son of the late Orin and Lucy Harrison Russell. He attended Washington, D.C., public schools. He was a member of Rafting Creek Baptist Church, where he served as an ordained deacon. He spent a number of years as a longshoreman and in 1943, he joined the military. He later enjoyed his own business in the pulpwood industry prior to his retirement.
Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Henry Russell Jr. and Robert Russell, both of Sumter, and Johnny Russell of Baltimore; five daughters, Pauline Russell, Addie Herriott, Amy Brown and her husband, Herman, all of Sumter, Lurece Brown and her husband, Willie, and Dinell Pratt and her husband, Charles, of Baltimore; a surrogate daughter, Mary Ingram and her husband, Kaiser, of Sumter; a devoted granddaughter, Cheryl Russell Spearman and her husband, Jerry, of the home; a special nephew, George Russell of Lake City; a brother, Charles Russell of Baltimore; a sister, Addie Vatoukian of Silver Springs, Md.; a brother-in-law, James Osborne of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Janie Russell of Baltimore; two sons-in-law, James Wheeler of Dayton, Ohio, and Kaiser Ingram of Sumter; 37 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Ernestine Wheeler and Dorothy Mae Russell; a stepdaughter, Florence Cooper; two grandsons, Antonie Brown and Michael Russell; a brother, John Russell; and three sisters, Lucinda Russell, Narby Russell and Lilla Southerland.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rafting Creek Baptist Church in Rembert with Dr. Charles H. Davis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
Deacons of Rafting Creek Church will serve as pallbearers.
Missionary women of Rafting Creek Baptist Church will serve as floral bearers.
The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from 1244 Cherryvale Drive.
The family will receive friends at 1244 Cherryvale Drive, Sumter. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

RACHEL M. SCRIVEN
Rachel Mae Scriven, 39, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Geraldine Anderson Scriven and stepdaughter of Arthur McBride. She attended Sumter County public schools.
Survivors besides her stepfather of Sumter include a daughter, Stephanie Denise Scriven; three brothers, her twin, Richard Scriven, Randy Scriven and Timothy Scriven, all of Sumter; and three sisters, evangelist Joann Scriven and Brenda Scriven Robertson of Sumter and Sharlene Scriven of Washington, D.C.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Scriven Jr. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Deliverance Miracle Tabernacle with Bishop Manning Scriven of Philadelphia officiating. Burial will be in St. Mark Four Bridge Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, evangelist Joann Scriven, 27 Hospital Circle.
Scriven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PORTER L. THOMPKINS
LUGOFF — Porter Lee Thompkins, 77, husband of Myrtle Rush Thompkins, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002.
Born in Andrews, he was a son of the late Thomas Randall Thompkins and Francis Lambert Thompkins Thompson. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, a member of the VFW of Camden and the James Leroy Belk Post 17 American Legion. He was retired from Keenan Transport.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Thomas Randall Thompkins of Aiken and Porter Lee Thompkins Jr. of Sumter; a brother, Raymond Thompkins of Columbia; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, David, Donald, and Michael Thompkins; and two brothers, Walter Ronald and Woodrow James Thompkins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Kornegay Funeral Home Lugoff Elgin Chapel with the Rev. Willie Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Quaker Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Kornegay Funeral Home of Camden is in charge of arrangements.

RAVEN E. WALTON
Baby girl Raven Elizabeth Walton, 1 day old, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 11, 2002, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Bryant Walton and Nerrisa Hunsucker Walton.
The family will receive friends at 403 Alice Drive, Apt. 16. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

JAMES WILLIS
James Willis, 86, husband of Martha Sumpter Willis, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born May 8, 1916, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late James Willis Sr. and Eloise Pinkney Willis. He attended Sumter County public schools. He was employed at Santee Print, Shaw Air Force Base, and retired from Williams Furniture Co. He enjoyed gardening for friends and neighbors in his latter years.
Survivors besides his wife include a son, Charles Willis of Maryland; three daughters, Helen W. Carter and Barbara Colclough, both of Sumter, and Edith Healand of Fairhaven, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and a granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke AME Church with the Rev. Robert R. Hooper, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lula Gary, the Rev. Sandra Clark, Brother Clarence Hunter and Brother Robert Brewer. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers. Women’s missionary society and ushers will serve as floral bearers.
The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m.
The funeral procession will leave at 3:25 p.m. from the home of his daughter, Helen Carter, 825 Willis St.
The family will receive friends at 825 Willis St.

RALPH BARWICK
PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. — Ralph Barwick, husband of Betty Barwick, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002.
He was a former resident of Sumter.
Survivors besides his wife of Peachtree City include a daughter, Lynn “Linda” Fitchpatrick of Peachtree City; three grandchildren, Ryan Fitchpatrick, Erin Todzia, and Ian Fitchpatrick; and a great-grandchild, Emily Todzia.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Fayetteville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Hagan officiating.

GENEVA BROCK
PINEWOOD — Geneva Brock, widow of Willie Brock, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
She was born May 15, 1919, in Clarendon County.
The family will receive friends at the home, 9635 Stukes Road, Pinewood.
Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

LUCRETIA J. CHARLES
Lucretia Jane Charles, 41, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at Ashley Chase Apartments.
Born April 4, 1961, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Willie J. Charles and Mary J. Charles Singleton. She attended the public schools of Sumter County.
Survivors include three sons, Andre Charles and Tyrell Charles both of Sumter and Kevin Charles of Texas; one daughter, Gelenda Charles of Sumter; four brothers, John Earl Farmer, Donald Lee Charles, Willie James Charles, and Jimmy Charles all of Sumter; three sisters, Willie Mae Laws and Geneva Pugh both of Sumter, and Betty Pearson of Parkton, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home with Elder Lawrence McElveen officiating. Burial will be in the Bradford Cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 3:15 p.m. from 125 Webb Ave.
The family will receive friends at 125 Webb Ave., Sumter.

MARGARET M. DARRAN
Margaret M. Darran died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
She was a former resident of Sumter and Punta Gorda, Fla. She was a retired service representative of New Jersey Bell.
Survivors include two sons, Walter W. Darran Jr. of Port Washington, N.Y., and Douglas C. Darran of Johns Island; and a sister, Olga Keichel of Easton, Pa.
Funeral and entombment services will be held at Charlotte Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum in Punta Gorda.

BETTY L. FOSTER
MANNING — Betty Lee Foster, 79, widow of George H. Foster, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Services will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home of Manning.

LATRICE A. ISAAC
FLORENCE — Latrice Andrea “Trice” Isaac, 20, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, from injuries received in an automobile accident in Darlington County.
Born March 31, 1982, in Darlington, she was a daughter of Julious Henderson and Loretta Isaac and stepdaughter of Kenneth James. She attended Florence County public schools and was currently attending Florence-Darlington Technical College. She was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church of Society Hill.
Survivors besides her mother of the home, father of Maywood, Ill., and stepfather of Atlanta, Ga., include two brothers, Julious Henderson Jr. of Maywood, Ill., and Steve Sellers of Florence; four sisters, Lori Ashley Isaac and Lauryn Audrea Isaac, both of the home, Julia Henderson and Jasmine Henderson, both of Maywood; maternal grandparents, Henry and Arsinia Isaac of Society Hill; and paternal grandmother, Dessie Hester of Maywood.
Viewing will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Smith’s Funeral Services, 307 Johns St., Florence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethesda Baptist Church, Society Hill, with the Rev. Byron Wilson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Juanita Singleton and the Rev. R. McAlister. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1805 Beth Court, Florence.

ESSIE S. WATSON
HARTSVILLE — Essie Smith Watson, 78, wife of W.J. Watson, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002.
Born in Lamar, she was a daughter of the late Ralph M. and Scotter Davis Smith. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she was a member of the relief society of the church. She retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 40 years of employment. She was a member of the Old Timers Club.
Survivors besides her husband of Hartsville include two sons, Russell Watson Sr. of Hartsville and Kyle Watson of West Columbia; five brothers, James, Melvin and Jack Smith, all of Sumter, and Billy and Willie Ray Smith of Lamar; four sisters, Ethleen Watson and Ruby Stevens, both of Bishopville, Zada Merideth of Lamar and Elizabeth Dill of Sumter; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with President Ronald D. Krein and Bishop Cliff Barfield officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
