WEST COLUMBIA — Valerie Baxton Gaines, 48, wife of Robert Gaines, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Lexington Medical Center.
Born Aug. 14, 1954, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Sadie Richardson Baxter and the late William Braxton. The family will receive friends at the home, 2415 Bryson Road, Sumter.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home, Inc.

CLIFTON W. ROSE
LYNCHBURG — Clifton W. Rose died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at his home.
He was the son of Annie Mae Rose Prince and the late William Rose. The family will receive friends at the home, 5195 Mt. Sinai Church Road in Lynchburg.
Services will be announced by Jefferson Funeral Home.

DEAUNDRICK L. NELSON
Deaundrick L. Nelson died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002.
Born Sept. 5, 1976, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Sammie and Mary Riley Nelson.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1087 Billups Road, Pinewood. Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

ROBERT McCOY
COLUMBIA — Robert McCoy, 46, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 23, 1956, in Sumter County, he was a son of James and Maggie McCoy Skipper.
The family will receive friends at the home, 12 Woodlawn Ave., Sumter.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home.

BETTY LEE FOSTER
MANNING — Betty Lee Foster, 79, widow of George H. Foster, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born Feb. 19, 1923, in Monkton, Md., she was a daughter of the late Robert M. Lee and the late Lottie Troyer Lee.
She was a retired secretary-bookkeeper for Robert E. Lee Construction, Inc., and was a member of Manning Second Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy L. Foster of Manning; a brother, Clifton M. Lee of Seminole, Fla.; a granddaughter, Heidi Ruehl of Spartanburg; a grandson, Howell Ruehl of Jacksonville, Fla.; two nephews and a niece.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning. The Rev. Phares E. “Pec” Chatham III will officiate. Burial will follow in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Bob Lamb, Brandon Tucker, John Land, Cal Land, Steve Boersema and Larry Williamson. Honorary pallbearers will be Rock Ouzts, Jack Morant, Jimmy Hipp, Burgess Sprott, Dr. Walter Cottingham, Dr. Vaughn Barnick, Keith Josey Jr., Ron Vega and Lee Dickson.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Memorials may be made to the Clarendon County Animal Shelter of the American Heart Association, SC Office, P.O. Box 23128, Columbia, SC 29244-3128.

JAMES A. TAYLOR JR.
MANNING — James Andrew “Drew” Taylor Jr., 28, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Manning.
Born June 3, 1974, in Sumter, he was a son of James Andrew Taylor Sr. and Mary King Taylor. He was a 1992 graduate of Laurence Manning Academy, a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in biology and a member of the Kappa Alpha Order of S.C. He was in pharmaceutical sales and a member of Manning United Methodist Church.
Survivors besides his his parents of Manning are a brother, Joseph Leffel “Jody” Taylor and wife, Amanda, of Manning; paternal grandparents, Hubert Leffel and Esther Ridgeway Taylor of Alcolu; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Dr. Joe Henry King and Ruth Jones King, and a paternal uncle, Hubert Leffel “Fet” Taylor Jr.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday in Manning United Methodist Church. The Rev. Debra Quilling and the Rev. Dr. James Carl Adams will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.
Pallbearers will be Paul Newman Jr., Badge Baker, Kerry Brewer, Ben Jordan, Jamie Hodge and Chad McClary.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1061 Apache St., Manning.

GENERAL RAGIN SR.
MANNING — General Ragin Sr., 82, widower of Mittie Bethune Ragin, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born Nov. 15, 1920, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late John and Minnie Watson Ragin. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Linda Ragin, 1013 Armour Hill Drive, the River Road section of Pinewood.
Services will be announced by King Funeral Home of Summerton.

CONSTANCE P. FIGUEROA
CHARLESTON — Constance Paff Figueroa, 53, wife of Paul Carter Figueroa, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born June 8, 1949, in Norristown, Pa., she was a daughter of Edward Paff and the late Jean Hannah Paff.
Surviving besides her father of Chatham, Mass., and her husband of Charleston are two daughters, Tracy Jean Figueroa and Shayne Leslie, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, Carter Edward Figueroa, Paul Andrew Figueroa and Alex Michael Figueroa of Charleston; a sister, Kay Paff Joyner of Dearborn, Mich.; two brothers, Michael Paff of Los Altos, Ca. and Andrew Paff of Boulder, Colo. A private service is planned by the family.

Joseph Gadson, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in at Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia.
Born July 25, 1922, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Sammie and Katie Gadson.
The family will receive friends at the home, 5120 John Franklin Road.
Services will be announced by James Funeral Home Inc.

CHARLES S. YOUNG
MANNING — Charles S. Young, 47, husband of Oletha Evans Young, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at his home.
Born March 28, 1955, in Baltimore, he was a son of Mary Smith Young and the late Joseph E. Young.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1099 Travis Lane, Manning.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC.

HOLLAND MACK
Holland Mack, 83, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at National Health Care Center.
Born July 5, 1919, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Melvin Mack and Daisy Cabbagestalk Mack.
The family will receive friends at the home of Walter and Annie Mae McMillan, 510 Dicks St.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

HELEN T. BROGDON
Helen Thorne Brogdon, 82, widow of Joseph Benjamin Brogdon, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born March 23, 1920, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Franklin Howard Thorne and Talithia Vick Thorne. She was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church and received an Honorary Life Membership for outstanding service and leadership in Presbyterian Women. She was a former employee in the administrative office of Sumter School District 2.
Survivors include two sons, Michael T. Brogdon and his wife, Cindy, of Pinewood and Jeff S. Brogdon and his wife, Evelyn, of Sumter; a daughter Betsy Brogdon Beard and her husband, Grant, of Summerton; two sisters, Margaret Thorne Kolb and Virginia “Snooky” Thorne Montague, both of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Wilton Brogdon and Joseph Benjamin Brogdon Jr.; a great-grandchild, Robert Player Brogdon; five sisters, Thelma T. Raymond, Mary T. Chandler, Hilda T. Whisnant, Kate T. Salisbury and Mildred T. Hurst; and two brothers, Raymond Thorne and Frank Thorne.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Concord Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William Albert and her nephew the Rev. Hal Salisbury officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Benjamin Brogdon III, Keenan L. Beard, Joseph Cadby Beard, Jeffrey Robert Brogdon, Brett Stewart Brogdon and Mark Anderson.
The family will receive friends at the home, 2095 Tudor St.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or to Concord Presbyterian Church, 3350 E. Brewington Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

MARTHA I. FORSYTHE
Martha Jean Isbell Forsythe, 62, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Waren, Ariz., she was a daughter of Sybeth Christine Isbell and the late Shelton Isbell. She worked as the activity director for Hopewell Nursing Home and had previously worked for Laidlaw Environmental in Pinewood. She was a member of Green Acres Assembly of God Church.
Survivors besides her mother include a son, Mitchell J. Forsythe of Sumter, a daughter Vicki J. Forsythe Wise of Sumter; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Isbell.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating.
The burial will be private.
Members of the adult Sunday school class of Green Acres Assembly of God Church will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Green Acres Assembly of God Church, 537 Lewis Road, Sumter, SC 29150, or to the Sumter Cemetery Fund, 700 W. Oakland Ave. Sumter, SC 29150.

JOHN W. BRYANT
John William Bryant, 57, husband of Linda Geddings Bryant, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Turbeville, he was a son of the late Dargan Scott Bryant and Rhoda Lee Parker Bryant. He was retired from Crescent Xcelite Industries after 22 years.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Johnny Bryant and his wife, Cindy, and Scott Bryant and his wife, Mary Beth, both of Sumter; a daughter Kimberly Bryant of Sumter; a brother, James Bryant of Sumter; two sisters, Glenda Jean Coulter and Marion Benenhaley, both of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Courtney Bryant, Lindsey Bryant and Haley Bryant.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Bryant.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Frances Strickland Sims and Ronald Lee officiating.
Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bill Daley, Wesley Goodwin, Bill Friel, Tripp Barkley, Michael Murphy and Robert Carpenter.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of Watson Hunting Club.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of her son, 3895 Selma Lane.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WENDELL GREEN
Wendell Green, 50, husband of Henrietta Holmes Green, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at his home.
Born Nov. 12, 1952, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late David and Carrie Lee Gamble Green. He attended Sumter County District 2 schools and was a 1972 graduate of Furman High School. He later attended Sumter Area Technical College.
Survivors besides his wife of the home include a son, Adrian J. Green and his wife, Anitra, of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Adrianna Alexandra, Amara Nicole Henrietta and Adrian Jerome Green II, all of Charlotte; two brothers, David Green of Sumter and Johnnie Green and his wife, Joyce, of Clarendon County; two sisters, Pandora Nesbitt and her husband, Felton, of Charlotte and Pearl Edwards of New York City; two adopted brothers, Albert Gamble and his wife, Loretta, and Jonathan Gamble and his wife, Evelyn, of Sumter; an adoptive sister, Marguerite Gamble of New York; a special aunt, Elouse Gamble; father and mother-in-law, Henry and Alice F. Holmes Sr. of Sumter; three brothers-in-law, Reginald Holmes and his wife, Carla, Henry Holmes Jr. and his wife, Pia, and Vincent Holmes and his wife, Christie, all of Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Beverly Magazine of Charlotte; six god-daughters, Jashema Coplin, Bridgett M. Henderson, Evelyn Holmes, Lecinda Jennings, Sandra Jennings, and Tyeisha Wright; and a number of uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Green; a sister, Evelyn Green; and two adopted siblings, Delores Green and Kenly Burroughs. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Greater St. Paul Non-Denominational Church with Bishop W.T. English, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder James Johnson. Burial will be in W.T. English Memorial Park.
Brotherhood of Greater St. Paul Non-Denominational Church will serve as pallbearers.
Ushers of Greater St. Paul Non-Denominational Church will serve as floral bearers.
The funeral procession will leave at noon from 1065 Cutleaf.
The family will receive friends at 1065 Cutleaf, Sumter.
Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

KIA ARTRIP
Kia Artrip, widow of Noah Artrip, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at her home in Haliewa, Hawaii.
Services will be held at Sunset Beach in Haliewa at a later date.

Bertie Jacobs Rhames, 57, wife of Clarence Rhames, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital.
Born Feb. 11, 1945, in Mayesville, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Wilhelmenia Benjamin Jacobs.
The family will receive friends at the home, 319 Wyoming Drive.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.
