Leola Marie LeGros Cook, 80, wife of Thomas H. Cook, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Biloxi, Miss., she was a daughter of Edgar LeGros and Amelia LeJeune LeGros.
Mrs. Cook was a volunteer and supporter of the SPCA.
Surviving are her husband of Sumter; a son, Robert Cook of Farmington, N.Y.; four daughters, Lori Cook Briggs and Cindy Cook, both of Sumter, Paula Byrd of Huntsville, Ala., and Sharon Butler of Saratoga, Calif.; a brother, George LeGros of Illinois; and 12 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas H. Cook Jr.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiating.

BENJAMIN FLEMING
TURBEVILLE — Benjamin “Moses” Fleming, 90, husband of Roberta Garland Fleming, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Carolina Hospital System, Florence.
Born Oct. 29, 1913, in the Turbeville section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Isaac Fleming and Lula Benjamin Fleming. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church, where he served faithfully until his health failed.
Survivors include a daughter, Edna Carson of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Julia (Julius) Johnson of Turbeville, Rosa Johnson of Raleigh, N.C., and Sudie Herring of East Orange, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Carnell Fleming; a brother, David Fleming; and three sisters, Maggie McFadden, Reva Wilson and Leola Fleming.
The remains will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church, Turbeville. The Rev. Shelley Hickson, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
The family will receive friends at his residence, 1303 Plantation Village, Turbeville.

Virginia “Jenny” Gertrude Prescott, 93, widow of Taylor Prescott, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at a local nursing center.
Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Luther Hartwell Barnes and the late Amanda Eugenia Hodge Barnes.
Mrs. Prescott was a member of Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Leon Prescott of Sumter; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Lee Phillips and the Rev. Jerry Watson officiating.
Burial will be in the Brunson Cemetery on Plowden Mill Road.

CLINTON, Md. — Thomas Owens, 80, husband of Vera Britton Owens, died Feb. 6, 2003, at Clinton Rehabilitation Facility.
Born Sept. 2, 1922, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Gus Owens and Dinah Richburg Smith. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.
SIDNEY B. BRITT
Sidney B. Britt, 75, widower of Em Johnston Britt, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at a local nursing center.
Born in Elizabethtown, N.C., he was a son of the late Cula H. Britt and the late Lena Blackmon Britt.
Mr. Britt was a retired automobile mechanic with Bundy Motor Co. with 22 years of service.
Surviving are a son, Larry D. Britt of Sumter; two daughters, Ginger B. Griffin and Cindy B. Cribb, both of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Cribb and the Rev. Buddy Griffith officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Eric Griffin, Brantley Britt, Glenn Avins, Keith Brown, Phil Clement and Dustin Cribb.

Joseph T. Jackson, 87, died Feb. 6, 2003, at Mariner Health East.
Born June 22, 1915, in Columbia, he was a son of the late Henry W. and Thomasina Robinson Jackson.

JERRY R. MILLS
WYTHEVILLE, Va. — Jerry Rodney Mills, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
He was the son of the late Harold K. and Margaret C. “Polly” Mills. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 9, the Wytheville Moose Lodge and Wytheville Golf Club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was retired from U.S. Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia.
He is survived by one son, Jerry Rodney Mills Jr. of Tujunga, Calif.; two daughters, Kimberly Ann Desanto and Loura Lynn Serody, both of Philadelphia; a brother and sister-in-law, Hal and Shelby Mills of Sumter; a sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Vance Hash of Rural Retreat; special friends, Pat King of Rural Retreat and Eric and Christy King of Wytheville; four grandchildren; two nieces; three nephews; and many friends at Glisan’s and Turn One restaurants.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home or at the home of Peggy and Vance Hash at anytime.

Born June 3, 1928, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Century McCray Sr. and Frances Washington McCray Brown, and stepdaughter of the late William Brown.

GABLE — Hayward W. Rhodes, 83, husband of Leola Johnson Rhodes, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Medical Center in Columbia.
Born July 1, 1919, in the Gable section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Martin Rhodes and Amy Bines Rhodes. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He joined Melina Presbyterian Church, USA, and served as an elder for many years. A member of the NAACP Manning branch, he was self employed as a farmer his whole life, retiring in 1987.
Survivors other than his wife include a son, Hayward E. (Patricia Eady) Rhodes Sr. of the home; a daughter, Haretha L. (Rev. Dr. Johnny L.) Ceasar of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Martha McFadden of Miami, Elizabeth Johnson of Bronx, N.Y. and Rosa Lee Cratch of Rembert; and four grandchildren, Lakeisha D. Rhodes, Hayward E. Rhodes Jr., Cassandra Rhodes, all of the home, and Trevor T. Ceasar of Brooklyn.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Elex, Johnny and Sidney Rhodes; and two sisters, Emma Boyd and Rebecca Jenkins.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Melina Presbyterian Church, USA, in Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Johnny L. Ceasar.
The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

THOMAS OWENS
Thomas Owens, 80, husband of Vera B. Owens, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Clinton Rehabilitation Facility in Clinton, Md. Born Sept. 2, 1922, in Summerton, he was a son of Gus and Dinah Owens Smith.
Thomas was a construction worker in New York City before he moved to Washington, D.C. Thomas entered into a partnership that formed a construction company while in Washington, D.C. After 20 years with the construction company, he retired and became a building manager for a major apartment complex in Washington, D.C., until his illness in December of 2002.
Survivors besides his wife include three daughters, Queen Trotman of Hillside, N.J., Shirley Wheeler of Ft. Washington, Md., and Ella Page Owens of Bronx, N.Y.; six sons, Thomas Owens of Bronx, Isiah Owens of New York City, Levi Owens of Bronx, George Owens of New York City, Robert Owens of New York City and Ollie Owens of Summerton; five sisters, Lillie Ida Owens of Bronx, Norvelle Frazier of New York City, Ida Mae Ellison of Sumter, Francis Dingle of Sumter and Alice Owens of New York City; two stepsisters, Reatha Bell Coard of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Dorthy Mae Witherspoon of Sumter; three brothers, Robert Owens and Augusta Owens of Sumter and John Owens of New York City; a stepbrother, Edward Owens of Brooklyn; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A wake will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Heritage Chapel, 710 Manning Ave. in Sumter.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
Burial will be at Gum Spring Baptist Church Cemetery in Silver.

ABRAHAM ROSE
Abraham “Pee Wee” Rose died Feb. 8, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 21, 1931, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Wigfall Rose and Wilhelmenia Washington Rose. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where he served on the senior usher board. Mr. Rose was a member of the Tindal Baseball Team and the coach for the team for many years. He was one of the founders of the Palmetto Gospel Singers.
Survivors include four sons, Alvin Rose, Larry Rose, Johnnie L. Rose and Dr. Kenny W. Rose, all of Sumter; four daughters, Alice Louise Young, Janice R. Leneau, Susan E. Prioleau and Chris Gibson, all of Sumter; three brothers, John Rose, Wigfall Rose Jr. and Herbert Rose, all of Sumter; two sisters, Alice R. Bracey and Susie L. Bracey, both of Sumter; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Cora Lee Farmer; and one brother, Cole B. Leneau.
Services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Wright, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Larry W. Barnes, the Rev. Isaac Johnson and the Rev. Donald E. Greene Jr.
Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 2:15 p.m. from the home, 231 Alexander Place, Sumter.
