DAVID S. CARRINGTON III
SUMMERTON — David Simms Carrington III, 63, died Feb. 7, 2003, at 7325 Rickenbaker Road, Summerton.
Born April 13, 1939, in New York City, he was a son of the late David S. Carrington Jr. and Ada Frierson Carrington. He received his education in the public schools of New York. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged.
Survivors include a nephew, William Frierson Sr. of Sumter; a special friend, Joann Minus of the home; and a host of other cousins, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Carrington.
Burial services will be at noon Wednesday at Mt. Zion AME, Rickenbaker Road, Summerton, with the Rev. Manuel Fogle, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Mt. Zion AME Church cemetery.
Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

HENRY HOLIDAY
Henry Holiday died Feb. 9, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
The family will receive friends at the home, 70 Athena Court.
Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

EDITH S. WISE
PELION — Edith Sturkie Wise, age 86, wife of the late Thomas W. Wise, died on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Mariner Health Care East.
She was born in Pelion, a daughter of the late Levi Sturkie and Jennie Harley Sturkie. She retired from Pacific Mills after 35 years of service. She was a lifelong member of the New Hope Baptist Church and was active in her Sunday school class and church work.
Surviving are: one daughter, Margaret Wise Taylor and her husband, Thomas, of Sumter; one brother, Coolidge Sturkie of West Columbia; two sisters, Gerald Faye Keisler of West Columbia and Jean S. Backman of Pelion; three grandchildren, Thomas “Jerry” Taylor and his wife, Annette, Renee Brunson and her husband, David, and Melanie Dixon and her husband, Tim; four great-grandchildren, Jessica Brunson, Taylor Brunson, Alicia Dixon and Burrell Taylor.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at the St. James Lutheran Church, 1137 Alice Drive, Sumter. The Rev. Earl Hartley and Pastor Ronald Briggs officiated. Burial followed in the New Hope Baptist Church cemetery in Pelion.
Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.
Junior pallbearers were great-grandsons.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

MARGIE BURGESS
Margie Burgess died Feb. 9, 2003, at Tuomey.
The family will receive friends at 1154 Moose Hill Drive, Pinewood.
Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

JOLETHA C. WILSON
MANNING — Joletha Canty Wilson, 62, widow of Willie J. “Bill” Wilson, died Feb. 10, 2003, at 214 Alfred Henry Drive, Manning Garden Apts. 5-C, Manning.
Born Aug. 7, 1940, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Johnnie Canty and Patty York Canty.
The family will receive friends at her residence, 214 Alfred Henry Drive, Manning Garden Apts. 5-C, Manning from noon to 8 p.m. daily and at the home of her sister, Clara David, 1 Branch St., Manning.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

ENA E. BOYKIN
Ena Elise Boykin, 95, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, in Hopewell Healthcare.
Born Aug. 24, 1907, in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late J.F. and Aliza Belvin Boykin. She was a retired secretary for the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce and attorney Wendell Levi, and was former secretary for Lawsons Drug Store and Stokes Exterminating Service. She was an honorary member of Sumter Business and Professional Women’s Club, and was presented outstanding member in 1965. She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a nephew, Lerue Medlin and wife, Rose, of Sumter; and a great nephew.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Salem Methodist Church Cemetery in Bishopville. The Rev. Bruce A. Sayre will officiate.
Friends may call at the residence of Mrs. Charlton H. “Ada” Griffin, 39 Moise Drive, Sumter.
Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

AUDREY M. WHITE
Audrey M. Colclough White, 43, wife of Ronald White, died Feb. 9, 2003, at her residence, 3 Middle St., Sumter.
Born Aug. 25, 1959, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Geneva Colclough Gavin and the late John A. Colclough Jr. and stepdaughter of Arthur Gavin Jr.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 3 Middle St., Sumter, SC 29150 and at 72 James Haskell Road, Wedgefield, SC 29168.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

WILLIE BUTLER
BISHOPVILLE — Willie Butler, husband of Catherine H. Butler, died Feb. 7, 2003, at Kershaw County Hospital.
Born in Lee County on Nov. 20, 1921, he was a son of the late Allen and Minnie Atkinson Butler.
Survivors include four daughters, Willia Butler Neloms, Darlene Butler Rogers, Daisy Butler Hodge and Laquisha Butler; a sister, Juanita Brown; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at New Hope Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. W.B. Johnson officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home, 2020 Browntown Road, Bishopville.
The family will receive friends at the home, 2020 Browntown Road.
Boatwright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GLENDA P. HICKMAN
Glenda Ann Pointe Hickman, age 51, wife of Mark Hickman, died on Feb. 10, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home.

MARY BRELAND
WALTERBORO — Mary Lee Robertson Breland, 75, widow of Julius Augustus Breland Jr., died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, in a Sumter nursing facility.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Hans Wunch officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Breland was born Feb. 3, 1928, in Colleton County, and was a daughter of the late George Hampton Robertson and Minnie Lee Cook Robertson. She was a retired machine operator with Walterboro Dress Plant and was a member of the Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church where she was in the Dorcas Sunday School Class.
Surviving are: three sons, Timothy David Breland of Greenwood, Julius A. Breland III and Mark Breland, both of Walterboro; two daughters, Kathryn Pace and Cheryl Vogel, both of Sumter; and two sisters, Juanita Robertson and Georgia Stanfield, both of Walterboro. 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren also survive.
Friends may call this evening from 6 until 8 at the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel, 1193 Bells Highway, Walterboro.

HENRY B. SANDERS
EATONTOWN, N.J. — Henry Benjamin Sanders, 90, widower of Maria B. Pitts-Sanders, died in Eatontown, N.J., on Feb. 7, 2003.
Born in Sumter County, S.C., Aug. 13, 1913, he was a son of the late Thomas Sanders and Joanna China Sanders.
The family will receive friends starting Thursday at the Mt. Vernon Inn, 2 Broad St., Sumter, and on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the same location.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

RUTH B. YATES
TURBEVILLE — Ruth B. Yates, 75, wife of Sam Edward Yates Jr., died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born Aug. 11, 1927, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Earl L. and Mary Coker Bochette. She was a retired clothing manufacturing inspector, and was a member of Turbeville Southern Methodist Church.
Surviving besides her husband, Sam Edward Yates Jr. of Turbeville, are a daughter, Claudette Dixon and husband, Charles, of Sumter; a son, Harry E. Yates of Turbeville; a sister, Doris Kaminer of Irmo; a brother, Howard L. Bochette of Nashville, Tenn.; four grandsons; two great-grandsons; and a special daughter, Barbara Ann Geddings of Turbeville.
She was preceded in death by a son, Russell Yates.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Larry Crowe will officiate. Burial will follow in Turbeville Southern Methodist Church Cemetery in Turbeville.
Pallbearers will be Craig Dixon, Rusty Dixon, Chad Yates, Brooks Yates, Wayne Kelly and Cliff Matthews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the residence, 1573 Pope St., Turbeville.
Memorials may be made to Turbeville Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P. O. Box 229, Turbeville, SC 29162.
Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

Funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today for Henry “Puddie” Holliday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Wright, pastor. Burial will follow in Bradford Cemetery. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 70 Athena Court, Sumter.
Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HARRY DURANT
MANNING — Harry Durant, 71, widower of Alpha L. Spry Durant, died Feb. 12, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
The family will receive friends at 2260 Fawn Ridge Road, Manning.
Services will be announced by Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home.

DONNA C. YOUMANS
Donna Marvette Clayborne Youmans, 43, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Georgetown County, she was a daughter of Carolyn Collins White and the late Billy Tisdale.
Mrs. Youmans was a member of Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are her mother of Sumter; two sons, Joseph Clayborne and David Clayborne, both of Sumter; three sisters, Denise Tisdale of Manning, Deanna Fort and Penny Floyd, both of Sumter; a brother, Billy White of Charlotte, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Luchanna Hartzog of Summerville; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Driggers officiating. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at 1560 Bar-Zee Drive.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

JOHN W. McKNIGHT
MANNING — John Wesley McKnight, 73, husband of Easter Stukes McKnight, died Feb. 11, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.
Born Feb. 10, 1930, in Davis Station, he was a son of the late Moses McKnight and Alma White McKnight.
The family will receive friends at his residence, 1307 Cambridge Drive, Manning.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC.
