Louise Gregg Boone, widow of Oliver P. Boone, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Life Care Center in Columbia. Born April 2, 1921, in Elloree, she was a daughter of the late Walter Gregg and Almeta Brigman Gregg. She attended Sumter elementary schools, Morris College, Allen University, Hampton University and New York University. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church, where she served on Stewardess Board No. 2 and the Hospitality Club. She retired from Sumter School District 17 after 40 years of employment. Survivors include a sister, Frances B. Sanders of Sumter; and several nieces and nephews. A wake service will be held at 6 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church with the Rev. Johnny N. Yeadon officiating, assisted by the Rev. George A. Thomas and Pastor Eugene Mason. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. The Rev. Christopher C. Burgess, husband of Dr. Agnes Hildebrand Wilson Burgess, died Monday, June 4, 2001. Born March 25, 1908, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Rev. G.B. Burgess and Rosa Dukes Burgess. He attended Clarendon County public schools and Lincoln High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Allen University and a Bachelor of Divinity from Dickson Theological Seminary in Columbia. He played football and baseball for Lincoln High School and Allen University. He became an ordained itinerant elder in Nov. 1935, and served churches in the Central, Palmetto, South Carolina and Northeast conferences. He began his ministry in the Central Conference at Biggers AME Church near Manning in 1935, and retired in 1995 from Bethel AME Church, St. Matthews. He had a radio ministry, which broadcasted from St. Luke AME Church and reached listeners in North Carolina and Florida. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a daughter, Betty Dicks of Columbia; three foster children, Thomas Wilson of Washington, D.C., Barbara Gamble of Knightsdale, N.C. and Lucille Muldrow of Sumter; two brothers, William Shakespeare Burgess of Freeport, N.Y. and Emerson Beecher Burgess Dukes of Orangeburg; two sisters, Hattie B. Irick of Philadelphia, Penn. and Christalee Burgess Dukes of Summerton; a grandson, Louie A. Dicks Jr. of Greenville; a granddaughter, Angela Dicks of Charleston; and a number of nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Connie L. Johnson; three brothers, the Rev. Longfellow B. Burgess, General Lee Burgess and Livingston Burgess; and three sisters, Helen B. Richburg, Mae B. Nelson and Rosa B. Blackwell. A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Williams Chapel AME Church in Orangeburg. The Rev. Roderick D. Willie Mae Sanders Dickerson, widow of Roy Arthur Dickerson, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. She was 94. Born in Fairfield County, she was a daughter of the late William Thomas Sanders and Sarah Lewis Sanders. Mrs. Dickerson was a member of First Baptist Church and was formerly employed by Burns Gift Shop. Survivors include a sister, Frances Rabb of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, Dr. Robert Sanders of Winnsboro, N.C.; two nieces, Lisa Sanders and Julie Thompson, both of Sumter; several nieces and nephews; two great-nephews. MANNING — Gracie Ann Tomlin Epps, widow of Willie James Epps, died Saturday, June 2, 2001. She was 87. Born March 3, 1914, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Edward Tomlin and Mary Davis Tomlin. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a lifelong member of Harmony Presbyterian Church. Survivors include seven sons, Willie Tomlin of Sumter, Wallace Epps, James Epps, Charles Epps, Eli Epps and Isiah Epps all of Alcolu and Lewis Epps of Gable; three brothers, Edward Tomlin of Charleston and Jerry Tomlin and Samuel Tomlin both of New York, N.Y.; 45 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Epps was preceded in death by her son, Frank Epps and two daughters, Lue Ethel Epps and Elouise Epps. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Harmony Presbyterian Church in Alcolu. The Rev. Carnell Hampton Moderator will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. PATERSON, N.J. — Roosevelt T. Gass, husband of Margaret Moses Gass, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was 60. Born April 16, 1941, in Sumter, he was a son of the late James Edward and Carrie Pinckney Gass. He was a member of First AME Zion Church for 37 years. He served as the church treasurer, chairman of the trustee board and as an usher. He worked for Dupont Company before he became an agent for John Hancock Insurance Co. for 19 years. He was an independent broker for Columbia Mutual Life Insurance until his retirement in 1992. Survivors besides his wife of Paterson include two sons, Theodore Gass and Eric Gass both of Paterson; his daughter, Aleshia Brandon of Bloomfield, N.J; two brothers, Dennis Gass and Thomas Gass of Paterson; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Arthur, Willie and Clyde Gass. A viewing will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Job’s Mortuary. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. John Dwight “J.D.” Hunt Jr., husband of Shirley A. Hunt, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Maryland, he was a son of Lillian Davis Hunt and the late John Dwight Hunt Sr. Mr. Hunt was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter. He was a graduate of Hartsville High School and attended Coker College. He was a former announcer for the Hartsville radio station and a television announcer for WBTW in Florence. He retired from WRJA in Sumter and was a former president of the Jaycee’s in Hartsville. He also was a shriner. Survivors besides his mother of Darlington and wife of Sumter include his daughter, Robin Hunt Schmidt and her husband, Mike Schmidt of North Charleston; his son, Neil Anthony Hunt of Sumter; a stepson, Will Owens of Sumter; his stepdaughter, Celeste Shelley of Orangeburg; five grandchildren, Nicholas and Jennifer Schmidt, Ansel Owens and Chance and Ethan Shelley. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville with the Rev. Dr. John M. Barr and Dr. James Chandler officiating. SWOYERSVILLE, Pa. — Joseph John Kalna, husband of Bernardine Veronica Kalna, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was 71. Born in Swoyersvillle, he was a son of the late Michael Gabriel and Anna Novak Kalna. Mr. Kalna graduated from Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He was a sales representative for the Lipton Tea Company prior to his retirement. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War and was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree. He belonged to the Emanon Country Club in Fall, Pa. and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He also was a member and past president of the Northeastern Association of Manufacturers Representatives, the Holy Name Society and Swoyersville League. Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Col. Michael S. Kalna of Stafford, Va., Dr. Mark D. Kalna of Sumter, Paul E. Kalna of Shavertown, Pa., and Dr. Chris “T.J.” K. Kalna of Swoyersville; his daughter, Karen M. Kalna Blum of Kingston, Pa.; and nine grandchildren. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Bernie Porter Rock, widow of Lander “Pete” Rock, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Mariner Health Care of Sumter West. Born March 10, 1919, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Layafette Porter and Tama Holmes Porter. She attended Sumter County public schools and graduated from Morris College. She taught at public schools in Lee County for 36 years. After retiring, she was employed as a site manager with Santee Senior Citizens Services. Prior to her illness, she served in God’s house as a youth adviser, Sunday school and Vacation Bible School teacher, a member of the Committee on Pastor Parish, Gospel Choir, as secretary of the Missionary (WSSC) and other various organizations. Survivors include a son, Edward Kirk Rock of Nagatuck, Conn.; a daughter, Gloria Y. Rock of the home; a sister, Elizabeth Porter Robinson of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Lutelia Rock of Sumter; and two grandchildren, Troy O. Rock and Essie Tama Marie Haynesworth. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m Thursday at Antioch United Methodist Church, Dubose Siding Road, with the Rev. James Mack, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Telley L. Esther Boney Shaw, 86, widow of Bartow S. Shaw Sr., died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at her home. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Ephraim Boney Jr. and Esther Juanita Davis. She was a graduate of Edmunds High School and attended Blackstone College for Girls in Blackstone, Virginia. She was a sustaining member of the Junior Welfare League and past president of the Sumter Art Association. She served on the advisory board of the Salvation Army. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was the first woman elected as an Elder there. On being designated Elder Emerita, she was presented a plaque during church service in appreciation for her commitment to her church. She was a member of McLaurin-Berean Sunday School Class. She was active in the work of the Women of the Church and was presented a Life Membership. Survivors include a son, Bartow “Bo” Shaw Jr. and his wife, Victoria Livingston Shaw, of Sumter; a sister, Dorothy Boney Lewin of Sumter; five grandchildren, Paul H. Lamb IV, Bartow Livingston Shaw, Marianne Davis Shaw, Martha Rutledge Shaw and Charles Alderman Shaw. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Esther Marian Shaw; and a sister, Edna Davis Boney. Vaughn and Mattie Inez Rush Vaughn. Mr. Vaughn was a member of Memorial Chapel at Ashwood and was a retired vice president with the National Bank of South Carolina. He was a U. S. Korean War veteran. Survivors besides his wife of Bishopville include two sons, David O. Vaughn of Sumter and Donald Bruce Vaughn of Florence; a daughter, Kathryn Susan Brown of Cleveland, Mississippi; and five grandchildren.
