Betty Elizabeth McKnight, wife of James Ramsey McKnight, died Feb. 15, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 13, 1933, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Eliza Bell James Burgess. She was a lifelong member of St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfully in many capacities, including president of the senior usher board, member of the YWA, the Golden Girl Club and vice president of the Assurance Choir. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a homemaker and caregiver for her family.
Survivors include a son, James Ray (Kim) McKnight of Spartanburg; three daughters, Frances McKnight, Caroline McKnight and Eve Susan McKnight, all of the home; three brothers, Joseph (Mamie) James Sr., Jeff (Jainree) Burgess of Sumter and Willie Mozel Burgess of Goldsboro, N.C.; nine sisters, Lillie Bell McFadden, Julia Ann (James) Perry, Shirley Ann Tiller and Joyce (Harold) Goodman, all of Sumter, Janet Head of Goldsboro, N.C., Dorothy (Perry) Welch of Goldsboro, N.C., Margaret Timberlake of Newport News, Va., Lubertha (Jerry) Sizer of Greenville, and Willie Mae Rose of Bronx, N.Y.; two foster sisters, Earline (Tommy) Bradley and Luree Wells, both of Sumter; a grandson raised in the home, Eugene McKnight of Sumter; a foster daughter, Theresa Washington of Sumter; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a son, Frankie McKnight; and two brothers, Raymond Lee Daniel and Major Lee Steward.
The remains will be placed in the church at noon Saturday at St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. M.G. Walters, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Mulberry Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be the trustee board of St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church and friends of the family.
Floral bearers will be trustee wives of St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church and YWA.
The funeral procession will leave from 15 Webb Ave. at noon Saturday.
The family will receive friends at 15 Webb Ave., Sumter.

Reginald T. Cureton, 50, died Feb. 19, 2003, at the residence, 1924-15th St., N.W., Washington, D.C.
Born Jan. 18, 1953, in Sumter, he was a son of Jimmy R. and Martha J. Cureton.

Damon J. McKenzie, 10, died Feb. 20, 2003, at Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 13, 1992, in Sumter, he was a son of Curtis McKenzie and Jacqueline Jefferson McKenzie.

EMILY W. MORIARTY
ARLINGTON, Va. — Emily Wells Moriarty, widow of Retired Lt. Col. Edward J. Moriarty, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, N.Y.
Born Aug. 19, 1919, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late LeRoy and Wayne Wells.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara M. Fleming and Emily M. Stone; two brothers, Leroy W. Wells of Sumter and O. Whit Wells of Camden, S.C.; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Moriarty Caprio Webb.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
FLOSSIE M. GARDNER
PHILADELPHIA — Flossie Mae Gardner, 59, died Feb. 14, 2003.
Born Dec. 16, 1943, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Samuel McGee and the late Thelma June McGee. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1964 graduate of Ebenezer High School, Dalzell. At the age of 18 she moved to Philadelphia where she met and married Abner Gardner. She worked at Abbotts Dairies Ice Cream, Wonder Bread Co. and was last employed by Penn Maid.
Survivors include two daughters, Veonda Gardner and Cassandra Gardner-Kearse; three grandchildren, David Gardner, Amanda and Khalil Kearse, all of Philadelphia; seven brothers, Samuel Jr. of California, James of Florence, Henry, Willie, Leon, Roosevelt and Alonza, all of Sumter; and three sisters, Loraine, Thelma and Loretta, all of Sumter.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the New Covenant Presbyterian Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Retha Nelson, pastor, officiating.
Pallbearers will be brothers.
Floral bearers will be nieces.

BISHOPVILLE — It has pleased the Almighty God to take our beloved Ella Louise Roary to his reward on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003.
She was born in Darlington County on March 13, 1964, to Frank and Stella Mae Roary. She graduated from Bishopville High School in 1982. Ella was reared in a Christian environment. She knew God and loved to pray. She was a wonderful mother, sister, aunt, cousin, niece and friend. Those who knew her felt her sweet spirit.
She was employed at the Scott Center for 10 years. Her last employment before her illness was with the Pee Dee Health Care Center.

COLUMBIA — Linda Lee Adams Grant, 51, widow of Norman Grant Sr., died Feb. 17, 2003, at Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born May 8, 1951, in Manhattan, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Joseph Adams and Alberta Carolina Adams. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1969. Linda worked for the Kershaw County School District for many years. Prior to her illness, she was employed by Kershaw County Medical Center as a registration clerk. She was a member of both Unity United Methodist Church and Gordon Street Church of God.
Survivors include her children, Janell Grant Daniels, Jameika Grant Middleton, Norman Grant Jr. and Michele Huggins; four grandsons, DaChon Grant, Cameron Grant, Khalil Daniels, and Shawn L. Middleton Jr.; a granddaughter, Aiyanna J. Daniels; her companion, Ronald Blanding; two stepchildren, Tyiesha Blanding and Anthony Blanding; two brothers, Larry Adams Sr. and Joseph Adams; a sister, Catherine Counts; and her mothers-in-law, Bertha Grant and Geneva Blanding.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday from the Unity United Methodist Church, 1332 Fort Jackson Road, Lugoff, with the Rev. Kenneth Carter, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Claretha B. Free.

MANNING — Ella Samuel Blanding, 100, widow of Joseph Blanding Sr., died Feb. 17, 2003, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Baltimore.
Born March 11, 1902, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late January and Lula Samuel. She was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Mark AME Church, where she served as president of the stewardess board, member of the missionary society, choir and Sunday school, prior to moving to Baltimore because of illness.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Blanding Jr. (Alice) of Alcolu; two daughters, Rachel Harvin (Rev. John Harvin) of Baltimore and Ethel Mae Miles of Alcolu; a brother, January Samuel of Bamburg; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Elijah; and one daughter, Ruth.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Mark Church, Alcolu. Alderman Camp Road, with the Rev. John Harvin, evangelist Dorothy Miller, the Rev. E. Blackstone, the Rev. J.E. Harvin and the Rev. Leroy Green officiating.

Charlie “Hosea” Hannibal, 80, husband of Susanna Rhodes Hannibal, died Feb. 18, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 13, 1922, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Richard and Rilla Williams Hannibal. He was reared in Mayesville, where he attended the Galilee Baptist Church. He attended Mayesville Institute and later served in the United States Army. He operated a service station in Sumter for many years and later retired from E.I. DuPont after 15 years of working. He was a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee.
Survivors besides his wife include his children, Charles (Joann) Hannibal Jr. of Columbia, Randolph (Sharon) Mack of Brooklyn, N.Y., Patricia H. (Ransom) Smith of Camden, Alice H. Rogers of St. Marys, Ga., Velma H. Miles, Audrey H. Covington, Linda (Roger) Hannibal-Wheat, all of Sumter, and Carolyn Haynesworth of Washington, D.C.; 23 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Hattie W. James of Sumter, Daisy Sims and Viola Rhodes of Bronx, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, Albert Rhodes of Troy, N.Y., and Paul Edward Rhodes of Bronx, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Mae Witherspoon Hannibal; and two brothers, Jesse Hannibal and Hallie Hannibal.

DALZELL — Johnny Lee Buchanan, age 44, beloved husband of Catherine Wand Buchanan, died on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
He was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., the son of Charles and Joy Culbreth. He was a sergeant first class in the South Carolina Army National Guard. He attended the Westside Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Joshua Ryan Buchanan of Dalzell; three daughters, Ashley Buchanan Jordan, Meagan Nicole Campbell and Emily Margaret Campbell, all of Dalzell; two brothers, Richard Buchanan of Greer and Scott Culbreth of Rock Hill.
He was predeceased by one sister, Donna Lynn Culbreth of Greer; maternal grandparents, Lewis and Mae Russell of Greer.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Edgar Boles officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.
