Robert J. Fournier, widower of Eleanor Fournier, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was born Jan. 29, 1927, in Mexico, Maine. Services will be announced Bullock Funeral Home.

SPURGEON JACKSON
Spurgeon Jackson died today, March 8, 2001, at Mariner Healthcare of Sumter East. Born July 28, 1925, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jake Jackson and Annie Benjamin Jackson. The family will receive friends at the home of Gertrude White, 490 W. Brewington Road. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

WILLIE McBRIDE
SUMMERTON — Willie “Shorty” McBride, 69, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston. Born Jan. 1, 1932, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Nero and Almeta McBride. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Earnestine Baxter Ragin, 2 Second St. Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service.

AMY S. THOMPSON
BRONX, N.Y. — Amy Sumpter Thompson died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Hebrew Hospital-Nursing Home in Bronx. Born Oct. 30, 1905, in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert and Rena Sumpter. The family will receive friends at the home of Eugene Jackson Jr., 3725 Furman Field Road, Rembert, S.C. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. in Sumter, S.C.

INEZ WILSON
MAYESVILLE — Inez Wilson died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at her home. Born Dec. 25, 1925, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late James and Bessie Joe Sims. The family will receive friends at the home, 208 Willow St., Mayesville. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter.

MARGARET G. BUTLER
Margaret Gregg Butler, wife of Nathaniel Butler, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 20, 1928, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Tom Gregg and Rosa Clark Gregg. Mrs. Butler attended Sumter County public schools. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior in her youth and joined St. Mark United Methodist Church, where she faithfully served on the finance, nomination and personnel committees. She also served as a member of the Inspirational Choir, the stewardess board and the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Survivors besides her husband of 55 years include two sons, Alexander Butler and Sammie Butler, both of Sumter; two daughters, Thelma Davis of Philadelphia, Pa., and Nita Butler of Sumter; four sisters, Clarie Clark and Mary Mack of Sumter, Ada Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Gladys Murray of Washington, D.C.; 30 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Annie Mae Butler; two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Mark United Methodist Church with the Rev. Evette Gadson and the Rev. Telley Lynnette Gadson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Gregory Fleming, the Rev. Jonathan Brown Jr., the Rev. Sammie Simmons and the Rev. Robert E. Galloway. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Members of the United Methodist Men will be pallbearers and members of the United Methodist Women will be flower bearers. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday. The funeral procession will leave at 1:25 p.m. from the home, 610 E. Liberty St. The family will receive friends at the home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM E. DOUGHERTY
William Edward Dougherty, 39, husband of Pamela Chapman Dougherty, died Monday, March 5, 2001. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Frances Kinney Berry and the late Gerald F. Dougherty. Mr. Dougherty was employed by Waste Industries. Survivors besides his wife and his mother, both of Sumter, include two sons, Thomas Dougherty and William Tyler Dougherty, and their mother, Barbara Dougherty, all of Sumter; a brother, Robert C. Dougherty of Sumter; and a sister, Irene Shrack of Manning. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Earl Berry Sr. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Raymond Tobias officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

THOMAS FOWLER
Retired Lt. Col. Thomas “Jack” Fowler, 89, widower of Louise Judd Fowler, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Olive Branch, N.C., he was a son of the late Henry Durant Fowler and Effie Cloe Traywick Fowler. Lt. Col. Fowler was a graduate of North Carolina State University. He was a 30-year veteran of the Air Force and a 10-year veteran of the Civil Service. “Jack” was a flight instructor during World War II. He flew Pursuit aircraft and later, helicopters. During his Air Force career, he served on the Strategic Air Command’s world-wide inspection team and was a deputy base commander. In the Civil Service, “Jack” worked in recreational services. His last job was managing the golf course at Shaw Air Force Base. “Jack” was a very avid and skilled golfer — two holes in one after the age of 65 — and enjoyed playing with the Pee Dee Seniors. “Jack” was a devoted and greatly loved husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Anne Neal of Columbia; a brother, Henry “Speck” Fowler of Monroe, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Morgan Elizabeth, Jacob and Mary Jordan. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with Dr. James Adams officiating. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LYNWOOD GEDDINGS
Lynwood Geddings, 71, husband of Pearl Elizabeth Brewer Geddings, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Patrick Brock Geddings and Mary Oneal Geddings Huggins. Mr. Geddings attended Pine Grove Baptist Church and was owner and operator of Geddings Home Improvement Co. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, Lynwood “Cotton” Geddings Jr. and Richard Patrick Geddings, both of Sumter; two daughters, Linda Oneal Greene of Sumter and Elizabeth Miles of Plant City, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Pine Grove Baptist Church, Old Manning Road, with the Rev. Don Riner officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 284 Pack Road. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

REV. BENJAMIN MOSES SR.
COLUMBIA — The Rev. Benjamin Moses Sr., husband of Lillie Mae Davis Moses, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born March 12, 1933, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Willie Moses Jr. and Lurene Samons Moses. The Rev. Moses attended Sumter County schools and furthered his education at the University of South Carolina, Duke University and Morris College. He served in the U.S. Army. In his youth, he joined Mechanicsville United Methodist Church and served faithfully in various capacities. As a pastor, he served in various pastoral duties in the Florence district. He was a dedicated member of the Legendary Golden Five Gospel Group for many years. He was a successful business owner of Moses Upholstery, serving in the community for more than 40 years. Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Benjamin Moses Jr. of Aiken, Malcolm Moses of Lexington and Mark Moses of Sumter; two daughters, Catherine Robinson of Broad Run, Va., and Gina Grant of Sumter; a foster son, M. Earl Ford of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Willie Moses of Sumter; a sister, Maggie Moses Deas of Sumter; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church in the Ashwood community of Lee County with the Rev. Herbert Fogle, minister, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Golden Five Gospel Group. Members of United Methodist Women will be flower bearers. The casket was placed in the church at noon. The funeral procession was expected to leave at 12:15 p.m. from the home, 1026 Porter St., Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home. Memorials may be made to Mechanicsville United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Mrs. Lillie M. Moses, 1026 Porter St., Sumter, SC 29153. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

ADIRANA G. ROBINSON
BALTIMORE, Md. — Adirana Gibson Robinson, widow of Clarence Robinson, died Sunday, March 4, 2001. Born Sept. 1, 1890, in the Silver community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late January and Adirana Gibson. Mrs. Robinson lived in Baltimore, Md., for several years and worked as a practical nurse in several positions at hospitals in Baltimore. She was a member of Union Baptist Church in Baltimore. Survivors include a daughter, Carrie Robinson of Baltimore; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Fleming-DeLaine Funeral Home, Boyce Street, Manning, S.C., with the Rev. Henry Presley officiating, assisted by the Rev. H.W. Mitchell. Burial will be in Mt. Zero Baptist Church cemetery in Paxville, S.C.. Fleming-DeLaine Funeral Home in Manning, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

CAROLYN B. SMITH
Carolyn B. Smith, wife of the Rev. Sim Smith, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at her home. Born Oct. 7, 1937, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Leonard Branham and Margaret Price Branham. Mrs. Smith was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church, where she had served as pianist, Sunday school teacher and Women on Missions leader. She was very active in all the churches her husband pastored full-time. She was an “A” student in school and was offered a full scholarship to Furman University for scholastics and music. Survivors besides her husband of the home include three sons, Robbie Smith and wife, Joyce, of Pinewood, and Mark Smith and wife, Myra, and Paul Smith and wife, Kelly, all of Sumter; a brother, Leamon Branham of Camden; a sister, Lorene Thomas of Camden; and five grandchildren, Christina, Johni, Anna, Patrick and Kevin. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Lawrence Edward Branham; and a brother, Harvey J. Branham. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Pinewood Baptist Church with the Rev. Carroll Waddell, the Rev. Bennie Barwick and the Rev. Frank Davis officiating. Burial was in Pinewood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Billy Johnson, Dargan Elliott, Joe Pack, Ernest Benenhaley, Wilson Ray and Carl Hansen. The family received at the home, 1966 Pinewood Road, Sumter. Memorials may be made to Long Branch Baptist Church, Carolyn Smith Music Fund, 2535 Peach Orchard Road, Dalzell, SC 29040. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MARY L. STUCKEY
BISHOPVILLE — Mary Lucia Stuckey, 90, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Powder Springs, Ga. Born July 13, 1910, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late James H. “Jay” and Clara Glenn Gibson Stuckey. Miss Stuckey was a graduate of Bishopville High School and attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She was employed in clerical, secretarial and accounting work during most of her working life. She began as a legal secretary in Bishopville and then worked in various U.S. government positions, including the Department of Agriculture, Selective Service, the State Department and the Atomic Energy Commission. During World War II, she served in the Women’s Army Corps with Headquarters Air Transport Command at the National Airport. Upon returning to Bishopville in 1952, she opened a letter shop service, which she operated until her retirement. She was revered as an accomplished genealogist and historian who gave generously of her time and research. She was a member of Hepzibah Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Sumter Chapter Genealogical Society and an associate member of the Old Darlington District Genealogical Society. Survivors include two nieces and three nephews, who live in South Carolina and Georgia, and a number of grand- and great-grand-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hepzibah Presbyterian Church near Manville with the Rev. Tom Kellam and the Rev. Ewell Black officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Norton Funeral Home in Bishopville. Norton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SUSIE H. ALSTON
Susie Hunter Alston, 70, wife of David Alston, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Eagle Road and Patriot Parkway. Born Jan. 30, 1931, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Marion and Lucille Rembert Hunter. The family will receive friends at the home of her husband, David Alston, 885 Panda Road. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

WILLIE P. STUCKEY
BISHOPVILLE — Willie Parker Stuckey died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Carolina Pines Medical Center in Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Roberta Richardson, Spring Hill Road, Bishopville. Services will be announced by Square Deal Funeral Home.

ISAAC J. DIGGS
COLUMBIA — Isaac Jethro Diggs, husband of Rosa Lee Diggs, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born Nov. 5, 1927, in Sumter, he was a son of the late William C. Diggs and Aurelia C. Diggs. Mr. Diggs attended Hopewell Baptist Church in his youth, where he was one of the first members of the gospel choir and served as a member of the trustee board. He was a member of the VFW Post. He attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1951 graduate of Denmark Area Trade School in Denmark, S.C. He was a carpenter for 50 years. He resided in Newark, N.J., for 28 years and was employed with Turaman Construction until his retirement in 1989. Survivors besides his wife of 47 years include a son, Thaddeus Diggs of Newark; a daughter, Catherine Lytch of Washington, D.C.; four brothers, Theodore Diggs of Florida, Ransom Diggs of Virginia Beach, Va., Eleazer Diggs of Rembert and Samuel J. Diggs of Sumter; three sisters, Minervia Mae Mayfield, Aurelia C. Byrd and Annie Lee McCoy, all of Sumter; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hopewell Baptist Church in Dalzell with the Rev. Dr. L.W. Walker, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie Dennis, the Rev. D.L. Grant, the Rev. Willie Jones and the Rev. Gary Miller. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Trustees of the church will be pallbearers. Members of the missionary society and trustees’ wives will be flower bearers. The funeral procession will leave at 1:25 p.m. from the home, 1065 Dyson Court, Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

ROBERT J. FOURNIER
Robert Joseph Fournier, 74, widower of Eleanor Owings Fournier, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Mexico, Maine, he was a son of the late Alfred and Marie Maillet Fournier. Mr. Fournier retired from the U.S. government as a commissary management specialist of the Southeast region. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War. He was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church. Survivors include a son, Robert Alfred Fournier of Jessup, Ga.; a daughter, Peggy Ann Park of Vergennes, Vt.; a brother, Roger Fournier of Mexico, Maine; and a sister, Rita Ricasoli of Naples, Fla. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Fournier. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Bullock Funeral Home. A funeral service will not be held. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 7275, Columbia, SC 29202. Bullock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
