ANNIE M. GIBSON
Helped fight to desegregate schools
SUMMERTON — Annie Virginia Martin Gibson, 90, widow of William Gibson Sr., died Tuesday afternoon, March 6, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning after a brief illness. Born June 16, 1910, in Summerton in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Hampton P. Martin and Amanda Hilton Martin. Mrs. Gibson attended Clarendon County public schools. Being reared in a Christian home, she joined Liberty Hill AME Church, where she served faithfully as a former Sunday school teacher, vacation Bible school teacher, choir member, member of the kitchen committee, women’s missionary society, lay organization, steward and stewardess boards, a class leader and a member of many other special boards and committees. Mrs. Gibson was one of the original signers of the petition for the Court Case “Briggs vs. Elliott,” one of the major cases leading to the 1954 Supreme Court Decision, Brown vs. the Board of Education, declaring that “segregation has no place in public schools” and was the last living petitioner in the court case. She served as a food service employee in Clarendon School District 1 until her retirement. She was an executive board member of the Clarendon County Branch NAACP, a member of the Briggs-DeLaine-Pearson Organization, the Clemson Family Life Club, the Christian Aide Burial Association (formerly YMCA) and other clubs, organizations and special committees. She received many awards and honors by her church, the legislative delegation, civic organizations and community groups. Gov. Jim Hodges awarded Mrs. Gibson the Order of the Palmetto during the annual Briggs-DeLaine-Pearson banquet in May 1999. Survivors include two sons, William Gibson and Harold Gibson, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; two daughters, Maxine Buey and Julia Jacobs, both of Philadelphia; a brother, Abraham Martin of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Willie M. Richburg of Sumter; 10 grandchildren, including a granddaughter she reared, Yolanda Neal; nine great-grandchildren; and a special care giver, Trenia Busby. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Clarendon County Cultural Center in Summerton. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan, pastor, the Rt. Rev. Henry A. Belin, presiding bishop, and the Rev. B.P. Boston, presiding elder, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Joseph Postell, the Rev. Henry W. Mitchell, the Rev. Rufus Gaymon and the Rev. William T. Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Men of the lay organization of the church, men of the NAACP and friends of the family will be pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. Members of the women’a missionary society, stewardesses and friends of the family will be flower bearers. The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from her home, Route 1, Box 5, Gibb Road, Summerton. The family will receive friends at her home. Fleming Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

RAYMOND HARVIN
Raymond Harvin, husband of Sarah Green Harvin, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Sumter. Born March 1, 1954, in Sumter, he was a son of Ruth Bowen Jackson and the late George Harvin. Mr. Harvin was reared in the Wedgefield community and was a member of Tiverton Missionary Baptist Church. He was formerly employed with Georgia Pacific and Becton Dickinson. He was a 1973 graduate of Hillcrest High School. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter and his mother, Ruth Bowen Jackson, and stepfather, Robert Jackson of Wedgefield, include a son, Raymond Harvin Jr. of Sumter; two daughters, Ruth Johnson and Cynthia Harvin, both of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Tanya Green of Sumter; a sister, Shirley Choice of Sumter; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Angeline Peoples. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tiverton Missionary Baptist Church in Wedgefield with the Rev. James G. Carter, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at noon Saturday. The family will receive friends at the home, 125 Carver St. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

SPURGEON JACKSON
Spurgeon Jackson died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Mariner Healthcare of Sumter East. Born July 28, 1925, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Jake Jackson and Annie Benjamin Jackson. Mr. Jackson attended Sumter County public schools. He served a tour of duty in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed as a stone mason for many years. He was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA). Survivors include his many relatives and friends, especially the Lewis and Gertrude White family of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA) in Dalzell with the Rev. Dr. Franklin D. Colclough, moderator, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Trustees of the church and friends of the family will be pallbearers. Ushers of the church and friends of the family will be flower bearers. The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. The funeral procession will leave at 11:30 a.m. from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis White, 490 W. Brewington Road. The family will receive friends at the home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

DOROTHY D. JOHNSON
SUMMERTON — Dorothy “Dot” Dingle Johnson, 36, widow of Kent Johnson, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born March 22, 1964, in Summerton in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Elizabeth McDonald Dingle and the late Roosevelt Dingle. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Briggs Chapel Baptist Church. She graduated from Scott’s Branch High School. She was employed by Travel America of Manning (Jerry’s Truck Stop). Survivors besides her mother of Summerton include a son, Terry Dingle of the home; three daughters, Lakendra, LaTasha and Laquander Dingle, all of the home; a brother, Alvin Dingle of Summerton; three sisters, Rosa Cantey and Shanena McLeod, both of Summerton, and Stephanie Brailsford of Newnan, Ga.; and three stepsisters, Tira, Chimere and Shantell Lee, all of Summerton. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Scott’s Branch High School gymnasium, Alex Harvin Highway, U.S. 301 South, with the Rev. Bobby McDonald officiating, assisted by the Revs. O’Donald Dingle, J.H. Pringle, David Lawson and Willie M. Starks. Burial will be in Briggs Chapel Baptist Church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of her mother, Route 1, Box 237, Rowe Drive, in the Goat Island community of Summerton. The family will receive friends at the same home. EUNICE S. MEDLIN
MANNING — Eunice Strickland Medlin, formerly of Scranton, 88, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, in a local hospital after an illness. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Rube M. Vause and Mary Jane Locklair. Mrs. Medlin was a homemaker and a member of Santee Baptist Church. She was first married to the late Clyde Strickland, and then to the late Wesley Medlin. Survivors include a daughter, Letida S. (Cecil) Langston of Manning; a daughter-in-law, Melba Rae Strickland of Scranton; a brother, Rudolph R. Vause of Timmonsville; three sisters, Alice Lee, Mary Lee Cole and Willie Mae Goff, all of Columbia; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, the Rev. Rudy Strickland. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. JAMES WELLS JR.
MIAMI, Fla. — James Wells Jr., widower of Rose Lee Barnes Wells, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at his home in Miami. Born Sept. 8, 1931, in Lee County, S.C., he was a son of Mary Henry Wells and the late James Wells Sr. Mr. Wells attended Lee County public schools. He retired as a chef after 25 years of service. Survivors besides his mother of Florida include two sons, Jeffrey Wells and Michael Wells; three daughters, Margaret Stupnger, Delores Frederick and Gloria Wells; two brothers, Nathaniel Wells and Ernest Wells, both of New York; two sisters, Carrie Marshall and Margret Benn, both of New York; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Orlando Wells. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant AME Church in Lynchburg, S.C., with the Rev. Davie Brown, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Chandles Cemetery in the St. John community of Lynchburg. The funeral procession will leave at 3 p.m. from the home of Thompson and Ethel Isaac, 135 Jefferson St., Lynchburg. REMBERT — E.B. Lacy, 50, husband of Louise Richardson Lacy, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Nov. 17, 1950, in Money, Miss., he was a son of the late Henry and Fannie Green. The family will receive friends at the home, 2080 Alston Road, Rembert. BERDELL PEARSON
Berdell Pearson died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 4, 1924, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Winfield Pearson and Carrie Sinclair Pearson. HUGH E. BROWN
BALTIMORE, Md. — Hugh Eugene “Bull” Brown, 80, formerly of the New Zion community of Clarendon County, S.C., and husband of Fannie Lue Eaddy Brown, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Born June 1, 1920, in the New Zion community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Itley Brown and Minnie Rose Brown. Mr. Brown joined Howard Chapel AME Church in New Zion as a youth. He was a farm worker for many years. After moving to Maryland, he worked for Acme Warehouse Inc., and later became a construction worker until he retired in the 1970s. Survivors besides his wife of the home include five sons, James Brown, Willie Brown, Jerry Brown, Atlee Brown and Jasper Brown; a daughter, Bertha Pendergrass of New Zion; a sister, Marie Evans; 24 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Howard Chapel AME Church, Old Manning Road, New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Bertha Mae Pendergrass, Route 1, Box 283-C, Newman-Branch Road, New Zion. RUBY P. CONYERS
OCEANSIDE, N.Y. — Ruby Lee Peoples Conyers, widow of Allie Conyers, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at South Nassau Community Hospital. Born Feb. 18, 1912, in Silver, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Sarah Postell Peoples. In her youth, she accepted Christ and joined Friendship AME Church in Silver, where she was a faithful member until she moved to Marion, S.C. In 1963, she moved to Long Beach, N.Y., and joined Christian Light Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the missionary board and was mother of the church. In 1990, she moved back to Sumter, S.C., and reunited with Friendship AME Church. Survivors include three daughters, Lillie Ann Madden and Irene Dingle, both of Long Beach, N.Y., and Jimmie Boatwright of Sumter; an adopted daughter, Josephine Robinson of Long Beach, N.Y.; three sisters, Lillie Smock and Anna Hilton, both of Philadelphia, Pa., and Sarah Richburg of Sumter; 28 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Leroy Conyers; a daughter, Ruby Lee McCummings; two brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Friendship AME Church in Silver with the Rev. Dr. Henry L. Cohen, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends at the home, 111 N. Pike, Sumter. Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

BOBBY C. FLOYD
Bobby C. Floyd, 54, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after an illness. Born in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Mack Zander Floyd and Mary Virgin Parker Floyd. Mr. Floyd was an employee of Korn Industries. He was a member of Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include a son, Bobby L. Floyd of Scranton; four brothers, John J. Floyd, Elgen Floyd and O’Neil Floyd, all of Sumter, and John B. Floyd of Kingstree; and two sisters, Louise Evans of Sumter and Della Garner of Olanta. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in Floyd Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery near Lake City. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church. GENERAL GREEN JR.
SUMMERTON — General “Little Bubba” Green Jr., widower of Emma McConico Green, died Saturday afternoon, March 17, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Jan. 19, 1900, in Rimini, he was a son of the late General and Phillis Green. In his youth, he accepted Christ and joined St. Phillip RMUE Church in Pinewood and continued his membership until his death. Survivors include six sons, Thomas Green and Willie Green, both of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Levi Green of Florence, and John Green, Leroy Green and General Green, all of New York, N.Y.; three daughters, Grace Green of Silver, Mary Jones of Boca Raton, Fla., and Sarah Brunson of the home; a son-in-law, Moses Johnson of New York, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Christie Bell Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Phillip RMUE Church in Pinewood with the Rev. Warren E. Hatcher, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bobby McDonald. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Eunice Helton, widow of Ben Helton, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born May 25, 1904, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Cornelius Capers and Patience Jenkins Capers. Mrs. Helton attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she joined Antioch United Methodist Church, where she served in many ways. After her marriage, she joined Bethlehem Second Presbyterian Church, now known as New Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she served on the deacon board, usher board and missionary society. Survivors include three sons, James Helton and Freddie Helton, both of Sumter, and Ben Helton of East Orange, N.J.; six daughters, Mamie Witherspoon of Manning, Mable Helton of Sumter, Ernestine Brown of Newark, N.J., Audrey Jackson and Blondell Harris, both of Perth Amboy, N.J., and Barbara Mitchell of Newark, N.J.; 34 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Walter; a daughter, Addie; four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Covenant Presbyterian Church (USA) with the Rev. Retha Nelson officiating, assisted by the Revs. C. Hampton, G. Hilton, F.E. Williams Sr., L. Walker and M. Sapp and Elders S. Muldrow and T. Miner. Burial will be in the church cemetery. CORNELL JOHNSON
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Cornell Johnson, 68, formerly of Turbeville, S.C., died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn. Born Dec. 24, 1932, in Turbeville, S.C., he was a son of the late Horace Johnson and Bessie Hickson Johnson. Mr. Johnson attended Clarendon County public schools. He was employed for many years at the Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. In his youth, he accepted Christ and joined Union Hill Baptist Church in Turbeville. Survivors include a sister, Magglen “Sue” McElveen of Olanta, S.C.; two aunts, Ola Herring of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Gretha Johnson of Turbeville; a sister-in-law, Almetta Johnson of Turbeville; six nieces and three nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul Johnson, Horace Johnson Jr., Jimmy Johnson and McThy “Pete” Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church, Horse Branch Road, Turbeville, with the Rev. Shelley Hickson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister R. SUMMERTON — Mary Lemon Jones, 78, widow of Elliott Jones Sr., died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Oct. 23, 1923, in Summerton in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late John Henry Lemon and Carrie Rose Bennett Lemon. Mrs. Jones attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she was a member of St. James AME Church. After her marriage, she joined Spring Hill AME Church, where she served as a missionary, stewardess and kitchen committee member. She was a member of Spring Hill Chapter No. 263 Order of Eastern Star and YMCA Lodge. Survivors include two sons, Ezelial Jones of Gaston, N.C., and John Jones of Atlanta, Ga.; eight daughters, Gertie Session, Isalie Jones, Azalee Jones, Jannie Jones, Mary Koko, Shirley Jones and Cynthia Williams, all of Baltimore, Md., and Gwendolyn Taylor of Pinewood; two brothers, Mose Lemon of Summerton and James Lemon of Buffalo, N.Y.; two sisters, Pastor O’Celia Blue of Davis Station and Carrie Mae Lemon of Buffalo, N.Y.; 30 grandchildren, including a grandson she reared as her own, Anthony Jones of Baltimore, Md.; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three children. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Spring Hill AME Church with the Rev. Phillip Mixon officiating, assisted by the Revs. Albert Thomas, Mary E. Pearson, Patricia Levy and Julia W. Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Members of Spring Hill Masonic Lodge No. 188 will be pallbearers. Members of Spring Hill Chapter No. 263 Order of Eastern Star will be flower bearers. Mary P. “Biggie” McLeod, wife of Melvin E. McLeod, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 5, 1951, in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late Irvin and Mamie Alston Simon Greene. Mrs. McLeod was reared by her paternal grandmother, the late Susie Greene, and also James and Lucinda Simon. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she joined Mechanicsville United Methodist Church. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a son, Melvin L. McLeod of Sumter; two daughters, Sheila Williams and Francine Greene, both of Sumter; four brothers, Marion Alston of Orlando, Fla., Zeke Alston of Maryland, and Ashby Greene and Billy Jett, both of Sumter; five sisters, Thelma Butler of Washington, D.C., Rosalee Greene of Maryland, Evelina Prioleau of New York, Lucille McLaughlin of Eastover and Martha Mickens of Sumter; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Jett and Irvin Greene. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Fogle, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Antioch United Methodist Church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends at the home, 1160 Flamingo Road. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
