John Ray Lee II, 52, husband of Deborah J. Lee, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late John Rae Lee Sr. and Margaret Thackston Morgan Lee. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and a mason. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, John Ray “Tripp” Lee III of Dalzell and Charles Christopher “Chris” Lee of Sumter; a stepson, Daniel Lee Kelley of Sumter; a brother, James F. Lee of Sumter and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Charles F. Walton Jr. officiating. Pallbearers will be L.E. MANNING — William “Manboy” Johnson, husband of Annie Mae Walker Johnson, died Friday, March 30, 2001, in Clarendon County. Born April 29, 1940, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Walter Cleveland Johnson and Alice Walters Johnson. He was educated in the Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Society Hill AME Church. He was employed by Sumter Builders, Thompson Construction, McIntosh Inc. and CIC. He was a successful businessman and owner of Jordan Merchandise for 17 years. Survivors besides his wife include four daughters, Deloris Johnson Mack of Columbia, Wanda Marie Johnson and Chanelle Denise Johnson, both of Manning, and Dorothy Aiken of Eutawville; a brother, Grant Johnson of Manning; four sisters, Nellie McFadden of Manning, Onetta Williams of Beaufort and Grace Servance and Lillie Mae Melvin, both of Stanford, Conn. STAMFORD, Conn. — Jessie Lee Melvin, husband of Lillie Mae Melvin, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Tandet Center after an illness. Born on May 18, 1914, in Fayetteville, N.C., he was a son of the late William Melvin and Rena Smith Melvin. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged. Prior to his retirement, he worked for Clairol in the shipping department. He attended Bethel AME Church. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Robert Allen Spencer of Stamford, Conn.; and a sister, Carolyn Melvin of Pennsylvania. KINGSTREE — Charlie Cecil “CC” Gordon, 77, husband of Betty M. Gordon, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence after an illness. Born Oct. 19, 1923, in Hemingway, he was a son of the late Mackie and Lula Pressley Gordon. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. He attended Allen University, Morris College and South Carolina State University. He was a member of Bethel AME Church in Lane. He retired from Hemingway Area Vocational School and was the owner of Gordon Concrete Products. His organizational affiliations were: NAACP, Williamsburg Company SE Reg., Center for Drug Free Schools and Communities, 33 Degree Mason, Knights of Pythagoras, past deputy director PHJ, Chavis Mason Lodge No. 446, Chavis Chapter No. 328, OES, Holy Royal Arch Chapter No. 20, Night Temple Consilislant 33, King Soloman Consistory No. 330, Shriner, Home Charity Lodge No. 18 and others. Survivors besides his wife, include three sons, Edward Gordon and Walter Stuckey, both of Hemingway, and Alfred Gordon of Pamplico; a daughter, Charlene Cooper of Philadelphia, Penn.; four stepchildren, the Rev. Frankie White, Leon White, both of Kingstree, Stencil White of Walterboro and Roselyn Miller of Bronx, N.Y.; three sisters, Della Cook and Lula Rogers, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mary Cooper of Hemingway. Julius Heyward Tyler, 56, husband of Lee Holland Tyler, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late James Woodrow Tyler and the late Letha Coker Tyler. He was a member of Open Bible Baptist Church. He attended Mayewood High School, was a former volunteer fireman and was retired from Bridges Construction Company. Survivors include his wife, Lee Holland Tyler; three daughters, Sharon Hodge and her husband Andy, Tammy Sanders and her husband Jimmy, and Racheal Posey and her husband Glenn, all of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Christian A. McLeod, Elizabeth Nicole McLeod, Whitney Sanders, Wayne Sanders, Daniel Sanders, Sydne Posey and Kaylee Posey; one brother, Billy Tyler of Sumter; and two sisters, Madeline Olson and Barbara Beneski, both of Sumter. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Harvin Tyler and James “Buster” Tyler; and one sister, Wanda Sue Rudd. Survivors include his parents, his wife, five daughters, La-Shawn Michele McCord, Debra Anderson, Tangee Anderson and Naskeisha Anderson, all of Jersey City; four sons, Alonzo, Antonie, Joseph and Darius, all of Jersey City; fifteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six sisters, Catherine Anderson of Jersey City, Betty Wright, Lucille Anderson and Loria China, all of Wedgefield, and Dorothy Conyers of Pinewood; a brother, James Anderson of Wedgefield; and a maternal grandmother, Lucille Johnson of Wedgefield. Alice R. Jackson, widow of Sean Jackson, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born April 16, 1912, in Orangeburg, she was a daughter of the late Della Witherspoon and stepdaughter of the late Oliver Witherspoon. Mrs. Jackson was a member of Salem Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the gospel and senior choirs. She lived many years in New York, N.Y., and later moved back to Sumter, where she was employed by Campbell Soup Co. until her retirement. Survivors include two aunts, Mamie Witherspoon and Ethel Weeks, both of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a son, James Jennings. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. T.O. Everett, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery.
