NEW ZION — Margaret Virginia Kennedy Higgins, 62, widow of William Higgins, died Sunday morning, April 8, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after an illness. Born March 17, 1939, in the Gable community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Margaret Cooper Kennedy and the late William “Butter” Kennedy. The family will receive friends at her home, 527 subdivision, Black River Road, New Zion. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home in Manning.

ELLA P. KING
BISHOPVILLE — Ella Porter King, wife of Larry King, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at her home. She was a daughter of the late Thomas and Martha Porter. The family will receive friends at her home, 617 James St. Services will be announced by Square Deal Funeral Home.

WILLIS McCRAY JR.
ALCOLU — Willis “Buck” McCray Jr., 90, died Sunday morning, April 8, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning after an illness. Born Oct. 15, 1910, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Willis McCray Sr. and Carrie Frierson McCray Hannah. He was first married to the late Peggy Smith McCray, and then to the late Amanda Manning McCray. The family will receive friends at the home, Cooter Creek Road, U.S. 521, Alcolu. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home in Manning.

FREDDIE R. McFADDEN
FREDERICK, Md. — Freddie Ruben McFadden, 47, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Frederick. He was a son of Wilhelmina McFadden and the late Freddie McFadden. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 21 Hampton Manor Apartments, Sumter, S.C. Services will be announced by James Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter, S.C.

BETTY B. SIMON
BISHOPVILLE — Betty Boyd Simon died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Carolina Pines Medical Center in Hartsville. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of Hester Boyd and the late Wilbur Boyd. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 285 Mac Stuckey Road, Bishopville. Services will be announced by Square Deal Funeral Home.

HOBSON THOMPSON
BISHOPVILLE — Hobson Thompson, husband of Geneva Simon Thompson, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home, 119 Jesmer Lane. Services will be announced by Square Deal Funeral Home.

ANNIE B. BRAND
Annie Mae Brown Brand, widow of Willie Brand, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Ethel McKnight. Born in Mayesville, she was the second oldest child born to the late David and Mattie Eaddy Brown. Mrs. Brand was a lifelong member of Brown Chapel Baptist Church. On Oct. 27, 1928, she was married to the late Willie Brand. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, gardening, bicycle riding and spending time with her family. Survivors include two daughters, Ethel McKnight and Elizabeth Williams, both of Sumter; three brothers, James Brown of Sumter, Woodrow Brown of New York and Joseph Brown of New Jersey; two sisters, Janie Gardner of Sumter and Maybelle Brown of New York; 19 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 32 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, David Brown; and a sister, Julia Brown. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Postell officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Saint Julian Snider and Bishop W.T. English. Burial will be in Beulah AME Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Ethel and Leroy McKnight, 24 Martin St., Sumter. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MANNING — Jeff Deschamps “J.D.” Ardis, 81, widower of Naomi Louise Richbourg Ardis, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Services will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

MALANTHA T. KING
MANNING — Malantha Timothy “Lank” King, 89, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 12, 1911, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Charles King and Lou Plowden King. The family will receive friends at the home of his niece, Ruth W. Ratchford, Route 2, Box 232, off the Greeleyville Highway, Manning. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

DOROTHY MIKELL
Dorothy Mikell, 54, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 7, 1946, in Sumter, she was a daughter of James A. Mikell and the late Mary Lou Witherspoon Mikell. The family will receive friends at the home, 109 Webb Ave. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

DOROTHY SIMS
Dorothy Mae B. Sims, wife of William Sims Jr., died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 14, 1940, in Mayesville, she was a daughter of Sarah E. Clavon Blyther and the late Willie Blyther. The family will receive friends at the home, 917 Oswego Road. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

THOMAS ALSTON
REMBERT — Thomas Alston, widower of Ida Mae Alston, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born March 30, 1923, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Fannie Alston Bowen. Mr. Alston accepted Christ as his savior in his youth and joined Wayman Chapel AME Church, where he was a faithful lifetime member until his health declined. He attended Sumter County public schools. He worked as a brick mason, carpenter, auto mechanic, land surveyor, barber and farmer. Survivors include a son, Edward Alston of Dalzell; seven daughters, Katherine C. Ford of Washington, D.C., Deloris Fraiser of Bayonne, N.J., Dorothy Addison of Rembert, Barbara Bell of Oglethorpe, Ga., Sandra Quick of Sumter, Nancy A. Pollard of Rembert and Thelma “Tina” Brevard; a sister, Rosa Abram of Dalzell; 24 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas Alston Jr. and Louis Alston; two brothers, Sammie Alston and David Bowen; and a son-in-law, Lawrence C. Brevard. A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel in Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wayman Chapel AME Church in Stateburg with the Rev. L.N. Howard, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. F.K. Richardson, J. Platt Jr., C.S. Howard and E.E. Black, Presiding Elder Robert L. McCants and Elder Thomas C. Bell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends at the home, 2071 Alston Road, Rembert. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

HORATIO B. FRASER
Horatio Browne Fraser, 85, widower of Elizabeth Culverwell Fraser, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Georgia. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late John Miller and Mary Hugh Fraser. Mr. Fraser was a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and Navy, serving in World War II. He was a resident of Broward County, Fla., for 53 years and was president of Brown Engineering and was a Pan American World Airways communications officer. He was of the Presbyterian faith, an honorary lifetime member of the Masons Claremont Lodge No. 64 AFM of Sumter and a member of the National Association for Amateur Radio. Survivors include a son, John Miller Fraser and wife, Lisa Marie, of Sanford, Fla.; a daughter, Elizabeth Boothe and husband, Danny, of Covington, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Mary Fraser of Sumter; three grandchildren, Mellissa Boothe, Denise Fraser and Jack Trundle; and a great-grandchild, Mia Elizabeth Collado. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Hebron Presbyterian Church cemetery on U.S. 15 North with the Rev. Ewelle Black officiating. Memorials may be sent to Hebron Presbyterian Cemetery Trust, 30 Baker St., Sumter, SC 29150. Bullock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

KEITH W. GOVRO
YORK — Keith Wayne Govro, 14, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born June 3, 1986, he was a son of Everette Govro and Erica Wilson. He was a seventh-grade honor student at Saluda Trail Middle School in York County. Keith was a resident of Sumter from 1993 until 1997. Survivors besides his father of St. Louis, Mo., and his mother of Catawba include his paternal grandparents of St. Louis, Mo., his Aunt Jessie and Uncle Robert Gunderson of York County, and his Aunt Samantha and Uncle Gerald Pack of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Adnah United Methodist Church, Adnah Church Road, in York County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bass Funeral Home, East Main Street, Rock Hill. Bass Funeral Home in Rock Hill is in charge of arrangements.

BISHOPVILLE — Ella Porter King, wife of Larry King, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at her home. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Martha Porter. Mrs. King attended Lee County public schools. Survivors besides her husband of Bishopville include four sons, Victor Thomas Porter and Richard L. King, both of Greenville, and Larry King and Carey King, both of Bishopville; two daughters, Martha Queen King of the home and Shauntea Holmes of Hartsville; and a grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of God on Jamestown Road with the Rev. Ragin Mitchell, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. CHAPMAN L. OUTLAW
BISHOPVILLE — Chapman “Bo” Lawrence Outlaw, 66, husband of Carolyn H. Outlaw, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at his home. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Irby Outlaw and Sally Pate Outlaw. Mr. Outlaw attended Concord United Methodist Church and was retired from DuPont. He served in the S.C. Army National Guard for 12 years. Survivors besides his wife of Bishopville include two sons, Tony Outlaw and wife, Amy, of Atlanta, Ga., and Keith Outlaw and wife, Angie, of Bishopville; a daughter, Deana Outlaw of Bishopville; a brother, Wayne Outlaw of Bishopville; three sisters, Carolyn Davis of Bishopville, and Jeanette Hall and Adonia McClain, both of Cassatt; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Concord United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stewart Kidd officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 3152 Lucknow Road, Bishopville. Memorials may be made to Concord United Methodist Church. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home in Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Square Deal Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of her mother, 285 Mac Stuckey Road, Bishopville. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Square Deal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
