SCRANTON — Bobby Matthews, 71, husband of Ruby Evans Matthews, died Monday, June 11, 2001, after an illness. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late E.J. and Rudolph Anderson Matthews. He was a farmer and attended High Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Scranton include three sons, James A. Matthews and Mark L. Matthews, both of Scranton, and Bobby J. Matthews of Darlington; two brothers, Harold Matthews of Florence and Jimmy Matthews of Coward; a sister, Anita Galloway of Florence; four stepsisters, Linda Strickland of Olanta, Brenda Altman of Florence, Dianne Coward of Coward and Bonnie Faye Lamb of Florence; six grandchildren, Benjamin Mark Matthews of Bennettsville, Jennifer and Blake Matthews, both of Darlington, Linda Matthews and Jerry Krusen, both of Myrtle Beach, and Renee Matthews of Coward; and three great-grandchildren, Jozie and Elizabeth Flowers and Shannon Thomas, all of Coward. HONEA PATH — William Luther “W.L.” Mills, 83, of 3217 Jones Chapel Road, husband of Rachel Banister Mills, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at the Brookside Nursing Home in Anderson. Born in Greer, he was a son of the late Bunyan and Lizzie Green Mills. Mr. Mills was a 1940 Clemson College cadet graduate. He served in the infantry division of the U.S. Army in five U.S. states, including Hawaii, and also served in New Guinea, the Netherland East Indies and the Philippines. He left the military as a major with four combat medals, the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars. He taught agriculture in South Carolina schools, while living in Summerton, Kingstree and Camden. He retired from an administrative position at Sumter area schools. He was a member of the Lions Club, where he was a previous Lion of the Year. He was also a member of the Young Farmers Association and of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in Belton, where he was a past deacon. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sisters, Lila Watkins of Myrtle Beach and Dorthy Whitener of Greer. He was preceded in death by an infant son; a brother, Delus Mills; and four sisters, Lula Lance, Patsy Mills, Nancy Sloan and Callie Atkins. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Rubert Reed and the Rev. Landrum Reece officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday. REMBERT — Mary Ellen Diggs Moody of 5170 Ellerby Mill Road died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at her home. Born Jan. 20, 1918, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Cleveland and Helen Young Miller. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she joined Rafting Creek Baptist Church. She was first married to the late June Diggs; she was later married to the late Oliver Moody Sr. Survivors include two sons, June Diggs Jr. of Rembert and Sampson Diggs of Washington, D.C.; six daughters, Virginia Wade, Carolyn Diggs, Marion Diggs, and Beulah Diggs, all of Rembert, Beverly Davis of Paterson, N.J., and Mary Osborne of Washington, D.C.; three stepsons, Oliver Moody of Bridgeport, Conn., Bernard Moody of Rembert and Jerimiah Moody of Sumter; four stepdaughters, Naomi Moody of Sumter, Mary Moody and Daisy Black, both of Rembert and Elder Juanita Dinkins of West Haven, Conn.; a brother, John Miller of Dalzell; five sisters, Theresa Dennis, Emma Clea, Georgia Mae Floyd, Minnie Mayrant and Queen Dennis, all of Rembert; 80 grandchildren; and 69 great-grandchildren. Born Nov. 4, 1912, in Greenwich Village, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Franklyn and Sara Bree Rhoades and an adopted daughter of the late Daniel and Isabella Sheehan. Gloria Brown, widow of George R. Brown Jr., died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at McCoy Nursing Center in Bishopville. Born July 11, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Samuel C. and Priscella Richardson Ragins. She attended Sumter County public schools and Lincoln High School. In her youth, she was baptized and confirmed at St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Wedgefield. She later became a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal in Sumter. She was a homemaker who enjoyed flowers and gardening. Survivors include a brother, Leroy Ragins of Pinewood; and four sisters, Millicent Hampton of Sumter, Madge Miller of Manning, Veola Kennedy of Columbia and Earlene Simuel of Atlanta, Ga. She was preceded in death by nine brothers, Hugh, Olia, Samuel Dewey, Richard, Harold, Carl, C.R., James Hugh and Willis Ragins; and two sisters, Gladys R. Holliday and Evaughn R. Prince. COLUMBIA, Mo. — William Pou Herlong Jr., husband of Barbara Morton Herlong, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at his home in Columbia. Born May 26, 1933, in Paxville, S.C., he was a son of the late William Pou and Varnie McLeod Herlong. He received a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. Mr. Herlong received the rank of first lieutenant, while serving in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. He retired as manager from Crawford and Co. Insurance Adjusters in 1991. He was a member of Community United Methodist Church, the Missouri Quarterback Club and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Jill McCallie of Fulton, Mo., and Joy Boan of Overland Park, Kan.; a brother, Don Herlong of Sumter, S.C.; five sisters, Varnie Mae Rodwell and Freddie Lynn Crymes, both of Charleston, S.C., Gloria Lewis of Sumter, S.C., Beverly Nettles of Lake City, S.C., and Catherine Ard of Manning, S.C.; and three grandchildren. In her youth, she joined Galilee Baptist Church in Mayesville and later Jones Tabernacle Baptist Church in Baltimore. She was employed as a dialysis technician and as a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of Martha Chapter No. 25 and Order of the Eastern Star Prince Hall Affiliation.
