BROADALBIN, N.Y. — Odion “O.D.” Archer, 83, widower of Clarisy Hastie Archer, died Thursday morning, April 5, 2001, at his home in Broadalbin. Born March 9, 1918, in Halifax County, N.C., he was a son of the late Odion and Ellen Dickens Archer. Mr. Archer attended Halifax County schools, and then moved with his family to Richmond, Va. He moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1941, and then to Broadalbin in 1970. He, along with his wife, owned and operated the former Archer’s Grove in Broadalbin since 1970. He retired in 1986. He attended Peoples AME Zion Church and Johnstown AME Zion Church. He was a member and past worshipful master of Mount Lebanon Masonic Lodge No. 33 of Saratoga Springs and obtained the 32nd degree. He was also a member of Sacandaga Lodge I.B.P.O.F.W. No. 1462 of Gloversville and was the chief antler of the Capital City Council No. 95 for several years. Survivors include two daughters, Delores Archer Patterson of Raleigh, N.C., and Lillian Archer Johnson of Broadalbin; four sisters, Margaret Hines of Rocky Mount, N.C., Violet Whitaker and Irene Moore, both of Baltimore, Md., and Zella Powell of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at Cedar Creek Baptist Church in Scotland Neck, N.C. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Haynesworth Cemetery in Sumter, S.C. The family and friends will meet at Haynesworth Cemetery in Sumter, S.C., at 1 p.m. Friday. A memorial service was held by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home in Broadalbin. MANNING — Jeff Deschamps Ardis, 81, widower of Louise Richbourg Ardis, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Aug. 21, 1919, in Manning, he was a son of the late Marion Watson Ardis and Sarah Frances DuBose Ardis. Mr. Ardis was a retired foreman of Stuckey & Southwood Lumber Co. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, 729 Field Artillery, and fought with the 5th Army in Italy and the 7th Army in France, Germany, Belgium and Austria. He was a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church and a life member of Black Oak Hunting Club. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Ardis Galloway and husband, Carl, of Sumter and Angela Ardis McCord and husband, Donald, of Manning; a brother, Franklin Ardis of Downsville, La.; three sisters, Tora Richburg and Faye Ward, both of Manning, and Ruby Wilson of West Columbia; and three grandchildren, Steve Galloway, Angela McCord and Donnie McCord. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Upright, the Rev. William L. Selman and the Rev. Danny Bridges officiating. MANNING — Christine Robinson Felder, 95, widow of the Rev. Willie Felder, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility. Born May 10, 1905, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Luke Robinson and Mollie Bennett Robinson. Mrs. Felder was a lifelong citizen of Clarendon County and attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she became a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church in the Jordan community. Later she moved her membership to Mt. Chapel Baptist Church, where she served in several capacities, most notably as a member of the missionary society and pastor’s aide club. Survivors include a son, Seymore Felder of Manning; three daughters, Mary Lee Miller and Alice Reid, both of Manning, and Willie Mae Lemon of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Luke Robinson Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa.; four sisters, Mable Crenshaw, Louise Kirksey and Pauline Walker, all of Philadelphia, Pa., and Margaret Lemon of Westover, Md.; 28 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven siblings. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Chapel Baptist Church, in the Jordan community of Manning, with the Rev. Lewis W. CHARLESTON — Helen Romonda Taylor Pearson died Friday, April 6, 2001, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital. Born April 29, 1967, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Sammy Taylor Sr. and Josephine Thomas Sanders. She attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1985 graduate of Hillcrest High School in Dalzell. In her youth, she received Christ at Good Hope Methodist Church, and later she joined Rafting Creek Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member of the nurse’s ministry, adult choir and mass choir. She also worked with the children and assisted the Sumter County Library bookmobile at her church. She was a diligent worker, never complained and loved to travel. Survivors besides her father of Rembert and her mother of Dalzell include a son, Victor L. Pearson Jr.; a brother, Sammie Taylor Jr. of Moncks Corner; and three sisters, Natalie Brevard Perry of Conyers, Ga., and Carol Taylors Sanders and Barbara J. Carolina, both of Rembert. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lt. Col. Lawrence C. Brevard. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Rafting Creek Baptist Church in Rembert with the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Heyward Hinton and Minister John F. Kennedy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Members of Men of Goal will be pallbearers. James Vaughn, husband of Willie Lou Guest Vaughn, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at his home. Born May 23, 1920, in Oswego, he was a son of the late Henry and Janie Bradley Vaughn. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his Lord and savior and joined Clark United Methodist Church, where he remained a faithful member and served in many positions including lay leader, trustee, treasurer and president of United Methodist Men. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, Thomas Howard Vaughn of Queens, N.Y., and Raymond Earl Vaughn of Sumter; two daughters, Jimmie Lee Vaughn of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Constance Betty Vaughn of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Herbert Vaughn and William Vaughn, both of Sumter, and John Vaughn of Elizabeth, N.J.; five children whom he reared, Anthony Mathis of Sumter, Gladys Mathis Pope of Augusta, Ga., Remita “Myke” Mathis-Snyder and Mary Pearl Mathis, both of Brooklyn, and Kristian Joi Wright; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Carter Jr., Willie Vaughn and Henry Vaughn Gaile; two sisters, Frances Lucky and Marie Pugh; and Garcia Mathis Wright, whom he reared. Born July 13, 1931, in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Willie and Conelia Ross Session. Mrs. Harvey attended St. Mark United Methodist Episcopal Church in the Salterstown community in her youth. She later moved to New Jersey and became a member of Mt. Zion AME Church in Trenton, where she served in many capacities including the lay organization, pastor’s aide, nurses aide and usher board. She was employed as a private duty nurse for many years. She was a member of the Lady M. Hill and the Lady U.R. Smith Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include two brothers, Willie Session of Sumter, S.C., and Joseph Session of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a sister, Hattie Session of Sumter. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Arthur O. Pellerin, 73, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his home in St. Petersburg surrounded by his family. Born in Fall River, Mass., he was a son of the late Arthur and Edith Pellerin. Mr. Pellerin served 22 years in the U.S. Air Force and 18 years as a teacher in Sumter, S.C., in school Districts 17 and 2. He was a long-time member of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church, where he served as a lay reader and vestry member. He was devoted to his family. Survivors include his wife, Betty; four children, Patricia S. Hester of Sumter, Sandra K. Grebe of St. Petersburg, Arthur W. Pellerin of Bowling Green, Ky., and Sherry A. Pellerin of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other family members.
