SUFFOLK, Va. — Florence Ashburn Richards, 91, widow of Curry B. Richards Sr., died Sunday, April 29, 2001, after a lengthy illness. Born Jan. 7, 1910, in Suffolk, she was a daughter of the late Harvey and Mamie Ashburn. Mrs. Richards graduated from State Teachers College in Farmville (now Longwood University). After graduation, she was married and taught elementary school for more than 40 years in the Suffolk School System. She was a lifelong member of Oxford Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and served as a president of United Methodist Women. She lived in Suffolk her entire life. Survivors include a son, Curry B. Richards Jr. and his wife, Loretta, of Sumter, S.C.; a sister, Ella A. Cross of Suffolk; a daughter-in-law, Frances E. Richards of Suffolk; three grandchildren, Mary Alice Sutherlin and Joyce R. Gardner, both of Greenville, S.C., and Barry A. Richards of Charlottesville, Va.; a great-grandson, Brett Sutherlin of Greenville; a step-great-grandson, Justin Gardner of Greenville; a niece, Sarah Cross Eyre of Richmond, Va.; and a nephew, Joseph M. Cross of Williamsburg, Va. She was preceded in death by a son, Frank A. Richards. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, in Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. DALZELL — Estella “Nadine” Ashmore, 81, wife of 65 years to John “Bob” Ashmore, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001. Born June 21, 1919, in Yakima, Wash., Mrs. Ashmore was a daughter of the late Lincoln and Vivian Miller. Prior to moving to Dalzell in 1993, she lived in San Jose, Calif., with her husband. She was a wonderful wife and mother and will be missed so much by her husband and family. We love you. Survivors besides her husband of Dalzell include two sons, Jerry Ashmore and his wife, Gladys, of Bellevue, Wash., and John Ashmore and his wife, Shirley, of Sumter; a daughter, Joan Ashford and her husband, Lyle, of San Jose; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vina Reed of San Jose. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home in Sumter with the Rev. James C. Pitts officiating, assisted by the Rev. Adolphus Ray. Queen Esther Salley Mitchell, wife of Howard Mitchell Jr., died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Mariner Health of Sumter East. Born June 26, 1925, in Orangeburg, she was a daughter of the late Clifton F. and Maude L. Keitt Salley and the stepdaughter of the late Addie Miller Salley. Mrs. Mitchell attended Felton Elementary School and Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg. For many years she resided in Chester, Pa., and Falls Church, Va. She was employed by the Workers’ Garment Union in Philadelphia. While residing in Chester, she was a member of Providence Baptist Church. After moving to Sumter, she attended Jehovah Baptist Church and Treadwell Street Church of God in Orangeburg. Survivors include two brothers, the Rev. John W. Salley of Orangeburg and Alvin L. Salley of Columbia; three sisters, Rose A. Magee and Mellie Jeter Benjamin, both of Orangeburg, and Vivian S. Davis of Columbia; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Heritage Chapel, 710 Manning Ave., with the Rev. Ragin Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at noon Friday. Born May 1, 1943, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Paul Wilson and the late Esther Wilson. Mrs. Richardson moved to Washington, D.C., where she resided until she moved back to Sumter in 1980.
