Virginia Wagner Webster, widow of Walter C. Webster Jr., died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. She was born in Newport News, Va. Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home.

W. FURMAN BAKER
CHARLESTON - William Furman Baker, 74, husband of Lucille Smith Baker, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at his home. Born April 17, 1927, in Rembert, he was a son of the late William Frank and Mae Hatfield Baker. He retired from the DuPont Cooper River Plant in 1981 and became active in several senior bowling leagues in the Charleston area. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where he served as church treasurer. Mr. Baker was a past president and life member of the Greater Charleston Bowling Association and was elected into their Hall of Fame in 1999. Survivors besides his wife of John's Island include two sons, Ricky and Larry Baker of Camden; three daughters, Linda Pope of Clinton, N.C., Brenda Melton of Columbia and Rebecca Hedinger of Camden; a stepson, Bill Smith of John's Island; four stepdaughters, Lucille Vidrine of Goose Creek, Sally Curry of Phoenix, Georgia Bozard of James Island and Rachel Glover of Simms, Texas; a brother, Tom Baker of Pinewood; three sisters, Libby McLeod of Rembert, Carrie Lenior of Horatio and Lila Delk of Surfside Beach; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Highway. Burial will be in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 441, John's Island, SC 29457. James A. MARY K. FORSBERG
Mary J. Kawan Forsberg, 66, wife of Donald K. Forsberg, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born in Central Falls, R.I., she was a daughter of the late Bashir and Jamilla Kishfy Kawan. She was employed with Campbell Soup for 18 years. She sang in the choir at 'Our Lady of the Skies' Church at Shaw Air Force Base, was a former Sunday school teacher at Shaw View and eucharistic minister at Our Lady of the Skies Chapel. She was a former member of St. Jude's Catholic Church and was a current member of St. Anne's Catholic Church. Survivors besides her husband of 46 years include two sons, Karl S. Forsberg and his wife, Leigh Ann, of Wedgefield and Steven W. Forsberg and his wife, Edie, of Gadsden; and two grandchildren, Dylan Reid Forsberg and Matthew Kenneth Forsberg. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth C. Forsberg; five brothers, Michael, Anthony, William, George and Fred Kawan; and a sister, Annie Kawan. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anne's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. AYNOR - Tom P. Squires 94, of 7th Ave., died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Conway Hospital after an illness. Born in Horry County, he was a son of the late Jerry M. and Martha Carolina Jenerette Squires. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church and a retired farmer. Mr. Squires was owner and operator of Sea Squires Motel at Surfside Beach. Survivors include a son, Robert L. Squires of Conway; a daughter, Jo An S. McNair of Conway; a brother, Isaac Squires of Cool Springs; a sister, Jeanwood Squires of National City, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Cynthia S. Adams of Greenwood, Maj. Mark Squires and Dr. Calita S. Richards, both of Atlanta, Ga., Thomas H. Squires and Terrence I. Squires, both of Sumter, Scotty D. McNair of Gallatin, Tenn., and Tracy T. McNair of Conway; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Dix Squires; a son, James Deyerl Squires; four brothers, Herbert, Jack, Hampton and Coli Squires; and two sisters, Eva Martin and Frostie Squires. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Reviskey and the Rev. Gary Harrelson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. HERCULES BENNETT
SUMMERTON - Hercules 'Plunker' Bennett, husband of Katherine R. Bennett, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Jan. 21, 1937, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Thomas Bennett and Onetha Oliver Bennett. Mr. Bennett graduated from Scott's Branch High School. He was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church, where he sang with the gospel choir and the male chorus and served as president of the senior choir. He also served as a trustee, superintendent of Sunday school, a Sunday school teacher and member of the usher board. He was named Father of the Year in June 1993. He was employed with St. Paul School, Jomac Products and King's Funeral Home for many years prior to his illness. Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include a son, Patrick Bennett of Columbia; a daughter, Jacquelyn E. Bennett of Summerton; two sisters, Glorious P. Adger of Elizabeth, N.J., and Betty Lou Franklin of Baltimore, Md.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Onetha B. Ragin and Hilton C. Drayton. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. Malachi Duncan officiating, assisted by the Rev. Edythe DeLaine and the Rev. GILBERT - John David Frick, 80, husband of Margaret Avin Frick, died Monday, May 28, 2001. Born in Newberry County, he was a son of the late Jonas Berley and Annie Mae Riddle Frick. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, adult Sunday school class, Lutheran Men in Mission Committee of 100, Sonlighters of St. Paul s, American Legion Post 7 and the Hollow Creek Community Club. Survivors besides his wife include four daughters, Diane Jumper and Jonette Cutter, both of Gilbert, Cathy Boling of Johnston and Pamela Hodge of Blessing, Texas; three brothers, Earl, Darr and Larry Frick, all of Chapin; two sisters, Nezzie Koon of Tennessee and Pelion and Margaret Hallman of Chapin; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Dwayne Hodge; and two brothers, Willie Mac and the Rev. Vernon Frick. TROY, N.Y. - James M. Gamble, 80, husband of Lucille Gamble, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at his home in Troy, N.Y. He was born in Greeleyville, S.C. He was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church for more than 60 years, where he served as treasurer of the laymen, a Sunday school member, a senior choir member, as an usher and trustee, a founder of the usher ministry, a worthy patron of Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 75, treasurer of Lodge No. 25, member of Zerrubabel Chapter No. 18, Albany Consistory No. 90, Altabar Temple No. 121 and as grand general inspector No. 33. Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Robert and David Gamble, both of Troy, N.Y., and Edward Joe Gamble of Oak Park, Mich.; two sisters, Elizabeth Small of Troy, N.Y., and Gertrude Ballard of Sumter; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. BESSIE P. HAILE
CAMDEN - Bessie Pickett Haile, 89, widow of Richard H. Haile Jr., owner of Haile's Funeral Home in Camden, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Providence Medical Hospital in Columbia. Born July 12, 1911, in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Dr. John P. Pickett Sr. and Bessie Hamlin Pickett. Mama Bessie attended Laney School, formerly known as Haines Institute in Augusta, Ga. She received dual bachelor of science degrees in chemistry and mathematics from Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C. She received a master's degree in education from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg. She taught in the public school system for 38 years. Mrs. Haile was a member of Camden First United Methodist Church. She was a life member of Composite Lodge No. 227 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the South Carolina Morticians Association and the National Morticians Association. Survivors include a son, Ralph H. Haile of Columbia; five grandsons, Don. H. Nelson of Greenville, Richard Haile Nelson, Ivan F. Nelson and Anthony L. Nelson, all of Camden, and Ralston H. Haile of Columbia; 13 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia Loretta Haile. Wake and Eastern Star ceremonies will be held at Camden First United Methodist Church from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today. MANNING - Mary Sue Hanks Keller, 47, wife of George Adam Keller, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born Aug. 31, 1953, in Cameron, Mo., she was a daughter of Mervin M. Hanks and Ruby McDaniel Hanks. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Alcolu. Survivors besides her husband of Manning and her parents of Fort Myers, Fla., include a daughter, Melissa Ann Keller of Manning; a brother, Kenneth M. Hanks of Bowman; and two sisters, Janet L. Wharton of Jacksonville, Fla., and Patricia A. Pooser of Fort Myers. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Stephens Funeral Home chapel in Manning with the Rev. MANNING - Tessa Marie Lorenz, 11, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born April 4, 1990, in Portales, N.M., she was a daughter of Timothy John Lorenz and Lisa Hillock Lorenz. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Manning and a fifth-grade student at Manning Elementary School. Survivors besides her parents of Manning include two sisters, Erika and Tracy Lorenz, both of the home; her paternal grandparents, John and Judy Lorenz of Mays Landing, N.J.; her maternal grandparents, Marcella Hillock of Clovis, N.M., and Roland Hillock of Midland, Texas; and her maternal great-grandmother, Julia Symcox of Farwell, Texas. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Manning with Dr. William J. Holmes officiating. Virginia Wagner Webster, 90, widow of Walter C. Webster Jr., died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Newport News, Va., she was a daughter of the late Adolph and Anna Virginia Watts Wagner. She was an avid bridge player and a member of Sunset Country Club. She was a resident at Covenant Place and a member of The Church of the Holy Cross. Survivors include a son, Walter C. Webster III and his wife, Marcia, of Sumter; a sister, Barbara Wagner Smith of Richmond, Va.; and two grandchildren, Jessica Anne and Natalie Mary Webster, both of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a brother, A. Watts Wagner. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Archer officiating. MARGARET R. BURNS
Margaret Ellen Roper Burns, 81, wife of the late Dr. Cornelius Benton Burns, died on Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. She was a native of South Carolina, born in Clio, the daughter of the late Thomas Wesley and Theodora Ortmann Roper. She received her education at the University of South Carolina and graduated from the following: U.S. Navy Midshipman Training School, Smith College, Northampton, Mass and the U.S. Navy Graduate School of Supply at Harvard University, Radcliffe Branch. During World War II she served three and one half years in the U.S. Naval Reserve as purchasing and supply officer. She also served as women's reserve representative for 7 activities of the 12th Naval District in San Francisco. On Oct. 23, 1943, she was the sponsor and christened the USN Destroyer Escort USS Major, DE 796 at the Consolidated Steel Corporation, LTD, Shipbuilding Division in Orange, Texas. This honor gave her the privilege of a membership in the Society of Sponsors United States Navy in which she was a life member. While stationed in New Orleans Maisie met her husband, C. Benton Burns, M.D. FAAP, who was a practicing pediatrician in Sumter. Between college and her Navy career, she was the confidential clerk that prepared the payroll and the cost accounting for the salaried employees of the E.I. Dupont Co., in Richmond, Va. The Woman's Auxiliary to the S.C. Medical Association was one of Maisie's first loves. She was active in local, state and regional affairs, served in many offices and as committee chairmen. She was twice the president of the Sumter-Clarendon Auxiliary and state president 1964-1965. She was honored with a life membership in the state organization. For 24 years she worked in the Girl Scouts as a lone troop leader, raising money to bring Sumter Girl Scouts into the Congaree Area Council in all phases - a Brownie leader, a Junior leader, a Neighborhood chairman and a Neighborhood Board member. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother and PTA room mother for 12 consecutive years. Her Garden Club activities included: past president of the Sumter Garden Club, Sumter Council of Garden Clubs, Sumter National Accredited Judges Club (she was a Master Flower Show judge). She received life memberships in the Sumter Council of Garden Clubs, Garden Club of S.C. and the National Council of State Garden Clubs. She spent ten years on the State Board of the Garden Clubs of S.C. and was also an accredited landscape appraiser. Her civic activities included: sustaining member of the Sumter Junior Welfare League. She conducted membership drives for the Sumter Little Theatre and served three years as vice president. She was co-chairman of the Sumter County Historical Commission from 1980 to 1983. She completed 8 years on the City of Sumter Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, serving the last two years as chairman. She served on the S.C. Governor's Council for Arts and Humanities in 1966 and worked in establishing the Sumter Gallery of Art. She was a charter member of the Sumter Artist's Guild and the Gallery of Art. she was chairman of the Mother's March of Dimes, serving from 1961 to 1964. She was on the fund raising committee for the building of the Garden Center in Sumter and served on the original committee for Historic Camden and was S.C. Chairman of the Committee that made application and received an award for making the city of Sumter a Tree City U.S.A. She was listed in the South Carolina Lives 1963, Marquis Who's Who of American Women 3rd, 4th, and 5th editions from 1964 to 1969, Who's Who in the South and Southwest from 1967 to 1968, Directory of International Biography 1966 and in the National Social Directory. Her memberships included: DAR, Daughters of the Founders and Patriots of America, Carolinianna Society, S.C. Historical Society, Sumter County Historical Society, Friends of St. Mark Episcopal Church, U.S. Navy Supply Corps Association, University of S.C. Alumni Association, Society of Sponsors U.S. Navy, South Carolina Readers Club, Sumter Art Association, Colonial Dames XVII Century and S.C. Medical Association Auxiliary. Her hobbies included family projects, painting, drawing, quilting, sewing and updating the family histories. She was voted S.C. State Mother of the Year and was president of the S.C. Medical Auxiliary. Her church activities included serving on the Bishop's committee for establishing St. Christopher Episcopal Mission in Sumter, adult Sunday school teacher, member of the choir, president of the church, altar guild chairman and 1st woman elected to Vestry of the St. Christopher Mission. As a member of the Church of the Holy Comforter, she was the chairman of the altar guild and a member of the choir. Survivors include a son, Cornelius Neil Benton Burns Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; three daughters, Henrietta 'Henri' Burns Wade and her husband, Robert, of Aiken, Margaret 'Sue' Burns Smoak and her husband, John, of Charleston, and Cornelia 'Tootie' Burns Adams and her husband, Jim, of Sumter; a brother, Thomas Roper Chambers of Louisville, Kent.; two sisters, Harriet Chambers Wilson of Louisville and Jacqueline Roper Stackhouse of Waynesville, N.C.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Anita Roper Fogg. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. John Barr officiating. Burial will follow in the Quaker Cemetery in Camden. Pallbearers will be: Moultrie Burns Jr., James Burns, John M. Burns, Major General Julian Burns, John D. Smoak III, Baxter Smoak, Benton Wade and David Adams. Honorary pallbearers will be: Dr. Mary Elizabeth Blanchard, Tillman Cuttino, Tom Foster, Robert Hazelhurst, John Hoar, Robert James, Vaughn Jennings, Ross McKenzie, Lovick Mims, Dr. Davis Moise, Richard Reiger, Dr. Jack Rhame and Dr. Hugh Stoddard. FARMERSVILLE, Texas - Margaret Louise Harris Osborne Wares, 83, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, in Farmersville. Born Oct. 15, 1917, in Sumter, S.C., she was the mother of Charles B. Osborne Jr. and Kathy Smith. Services in Sumter are being planned.

ADA V. CAPERS
PHILADELPHIA - Ada Vernell Sumpter Capers, widow of Leroy Capers, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Fairview Nursing Home. Born Jan. 17, 1900, in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Florence Deas and Moses Sumpter. Mrs. Capers was raised and educated in Dalzell, S.C. She was baptized and a member of Joshua Baptist Church until she married Leroy Capers in 1942. Immediately after marriage, she and her husband moved to Philadelphia. There, she joined St. Paul's Baptist Church where she served on the senior usher board and assisted the church in numerous fundraising events, especially the ones that required cooking. She attended St. Paul's Baptist Church until her health prohibited her from attending. She was an excellent role model for her children, grandchildren and family members, who will always remember her. Survivors include two daughters, Delores Capers of West Chester, Pa., and Dorothy Walker of Philadelphia; three brothers, Jasper, Nathaniel and Leroy Sumpter; a sister, Martha Willis of Sumter; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis and Son Sumpter; and a sister, Verlene Jackson. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Joshua Baptist Church in Dalzell with the Rev. Eugene Dennis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Joshua Baptist Church Yard Cemetery in Dalzell. Pallbearers and floral bearers will be friends of the family. The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home of her sister, Martha Willis, 125 W. Bartlette St., No. 306, Sumter.
