Derick Darnell James, 23, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Providence Hospital. Born Aug. 7, 1978, in Sumter, he was a son of Draford Smith and Viola James Noel. He was raised by his aunt, Thelma J. Chaney. He attended Sumter County public schools. In his youth, he joined Calvary Baptist Church where he was a member of the Brotherhood Club. Following an accident, he resided at Central Carolina Health and Rehabilitation Center in Columbia. Survivors besides his father of Sumter and his mother of New York include a daughter, Nayonna Shaynice Gardner of Sumter; a brother, Charles Chaney of Sumter; and his grandmothers, Geneva M. James and Ruby B. Smith, both of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood with the Rev. E.L. MANNING — Josephine Canty Mallett died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston. Born Oct. 17, 1917, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Aaron and Amanda Singleton Canty. She was a graduate of Morris College. She was a member of Providence AME Church, where she was a member of several auxiliaries of the church. She was also a member of New Light Chapter O.E.S., the Manning branch of the NAACP, and the Mary McLeod Bethune Council of Negro Women. She retired in 1979 after teaching for several years in the Clarendon County public schools. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia M. McFadden of Myrtle Beach; an adopted brother, Rollins Canty of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and a grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Jesse Aaron Mallett. Wake services will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Fleming and Delaine Chapel, Boyce Street, Manning. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Providence AME Church, Mallett Road, Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, the Rev. MANNING — Rebecca Geneva Jones Marion, 77, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at 1262 McDowell St., Red Hill community, Manning. Born May 27, 1924, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Zero and Lillie Conyers Jones. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior and gospel choirs, YWCA, Community Missionary, church clerk, vice president of Missionary Society, adult Sunday school teacher, president of union and member of the executive board of the Sumter Association. She was a retired employee of D and H Bar-B-Que of Manning. Survivors include a son, Bennie Jones of Boston, Mass.; two daughters, Kathy Reed and Betty Richardson, both of Manning; a sister, Elizabeth Smith of Corona, N.Y.; a step-daughter, Celestine Marion of Columbia; a niece she raised as her own, Lillie Ann Miller of Manning; and a grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sons, James Marion Jr. and Thomas Marion; a brother, Albertus Jones; and a sister, Francis Simmons. She retired from NASA Johnson Space Center in June 1995 as an accounting technician. She also worked in the county treasurer’s office before moving to Houston, Texas. She was a resident of Sumter and attended Bethel Baptist Church. Samuel Nathaniel Sr., 85, husband of Lelia Nathaniel, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Windsor Manor Health Care Facility. Born Aug. 20, 1916, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Rev. Willie and Hattie Richardson Nathaniel. In his youth, he joined the Bold Pilgrim Baptist Church. He later joined Trinity Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the trustee board for more than 50 years. He then joined New Fellowship Baptist Church, where he was chairman of the trustee board, Sunday school chaplain, member of the senior choir, prayer band, Bible study class, church program committee and church van driver until his health failed. He was a member of the Scottish and York Rite Mason for more than 40 years. He ran a dray line and wood service for more than 65 years in Sumter. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include three sons, Samuel Nathaniel Jr. and Richard Nathaniel, both of Sumter, and Mark Nathaniel of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Annette Blair and Bernice Nathaniel, both of Brooklyn; a stepson, Clevenland Simmons of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Willie Mae Nathaniel; two brothers, Ezekiel and Timothy Nathaniel; and a sister, Genvia Nathaniel White.
