Born May 29, 1951, in Sumter County, he was a son of Vermell Brown and the late William Levan. The family will receive friends at the home, 5420 Mayrant Road, Rembert. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

ANNIE C. FLEMING
MANNING — Annie Carter Fleming, 69, widow of Sammie L. Fleming, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at her home. Born March 15, 1932, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Eleazer and Sarah Richardson Carter. The family will receive friends at the home, 4505 Kingstree Highway, Manning. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

BISHOPVILLE — Mamie Holloman, 81, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Jerry and Vinney Roman Smith. The family will receive friends at 689 Lynchburg Highway. Services will be announced by Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville.

REV. JARRETT MILLER
MANNING — The Rev. Jarrett “Roy” Miller, 79, widower of Hester Parson Miller, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Aug. 19, 1922, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Temple and Vonnie Mack Miller. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Evangelist Sarah Miller, 1062 Cambridge Drive, Manning. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

CLIMON WINTERS
LYNCHBURG — Climon Winters, 78, husband of Blanch Jenkins Winters, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at his home. He was born Dec. 22, 1922, in Attala County, Miss. The family will receive friends at the home, 722 Red Top Road, and at the home of his daughter, Angela Winters, 712 Red Top Road, Lynchburg. Services will be announced by Commercial Funeral Home of Lynchburg.

MARY “SUE” BATTEN
WEDGEFIELD — Mary “Sue” Mostellar Batten, 68, wife of Robert E. “Bobby” Batten, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at her home. Born in LaGrange, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Eulous E. Mostellar and Margaret Crowder Mostellar. She was a member of Wedgefield Baptist Church. She was a 1954 graduate of St. Margaret’s Hospital School of Nursing in Montgomery, Ala. She was a registered nurse, having worked in Anderson, Camden and Sumter. Survivors besides her husband of Wedgefield include two sisters, Frances Upchurch of LaGrange and Reba Vetter of Alexandria, Va.; 10 nephews, Lorand R. Batten III, Robert E. Batten II, Marvous E. Mostellar Jr., William E. Mostellar, Byron Weaver, Mike Weaver, Sanford Weaver Jr., Alex Upchurch, Tim Bryson and Todd Bryson; nine nieces, Sandy Arnold, Pam Baker, Melissa Batten, Lisa Gainey, Elaine Gardner, Linda Sue Stengel, Arlene Upchurch, Rheba Vetter and Joanne Holsombeck. She was preceded in death by a brother, Marvous Eulous Mostellar. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. D. McNab Morrison and the Rev. Richard W. Hudson officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Lorand R. Batten III, Mike Earnhardt, C.T. Gulledge Jr., Albert H. Heath, Marvous E. Mostellar Jr. and Sanford H. Weaver Jr. will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

FRANK BILLEY JR.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Frank Billey Jr. died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital. Born Feb. 11, 1910, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Frank and Rosa Billey. He attended school in Summerton. He was married to the late Sarah Brown. He moved to Philadelphia and joined First Timothy Baptist Church, where he served on the Missionary Board until his health failed. Survivors include two daughters, Rosa Witherspoon of Philadelphia and Blossom King of High Point, N.C.; two brothers, Elijah and Clyde Billey; two sisters, Rosa Johnson and Emma Gaines; and a grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles W. Billey. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Beulah UME Church, Highway 120, Panola, with the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Panola Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of Lillie M. McFadden, 128 K St., Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home of Lillie M. McFadden. Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

ZELAH S. DICK
Zelah Sikes Dick, 81, widow of George W. Dick Jr., died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter. Born in Callahan, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Rev. Charlie A. and Minnie Kennison Sikes. She was a longtime resident of Sumter, where she was active in many civic clubs including the Garden Club, the Cosmopolitan Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion. She was a retired practical nurse and a sitter. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Ron LaBorda of Lake Wales, Fla.; a daughter, Janet Heverly and her husband, Byron, of Sumter; a brother, Floyd Sikes of Folkston, Ga.; a sister, Jean Dunlop of Brandenton, Fla.; a grandson, Bill Otto of Sumter; two granddaughters, Beverly Singleton and Barbara Schwetzke, both of Sumter; twin great-granddaughters, Mandy and Brandy Singleton, both of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Sikes; a sister, Eunice Lauderdale; and a granddaughter, Brenda Otto. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Stilwell officiating. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, Janet Heverly. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150; The American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Columbia, SC 29204; or to a charity of one’s choice. NORWOOD E. HODGE
MANNING — Norwood Ervin Hodge, 35, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at his home in Manning. Born May 20, 1966, in Manning, he was a son of Clarence Ervin Hodge and Sarah Elizabeth DuBose Hodge. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors are his parents of Manning. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and other times at the home, 2325 Crossroad Church Road. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

DAN F. LANEY JR.
COLUMBIA — Judge Dan Foster Laney Jr., 70, husband of Emily Holland Laney, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center. Born in Bishopville, he was a son of the late Dan F. Laney Sr. and Mary Olive Anderson Laney. He was a member of Kilbourne Baptist Church in Columbia and was a former deacon of First Baptist Church in Bishopville. He was a retired 3rd Circuit judge. He received a bachelor of arts degree from The Citadel and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law and the National College of State Trial Judges. He was past president of Little League Baseball in Bishopville, a charter member and past president of the Bishopville Jaycees, and past president and a member of the Lion’s Club. He was a past trustee of the Baptist College of Charleston; he was named Young Man of the Year in 1964. He was a member of Phi Delta Phi fraternity. He was a member of the Honor Counsel of Wig and Robe and received a BNA award. He was also a recipient of the Sapp Funderburk Award of the USC law school. He was a first lieutenant judge advocate of the Generals Department of the U.S. Air Force, serving as staff judge advocate of the 52nd Fighter Group. He was a member of the S.C. House of Representatives from 1961-1970. Survivors besides his wife of Columbia include three sons, Dan F. Laney III of Atlanta, Ga., Dr. James Baskin Laney of Columbia and Alan N. Laney of Bishopville; a daughter, Marion L. Ey of Columbia; a stepson, David Campbell of Seneca; a stepdaughter, Catherine Shuford of Millington, Tenn.; five grandsons; a granddaughter; and three stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Adville C. Baskin Laney. Graveside services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Piedmont Cemetery in Bishopville. The family will receive friends at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home in Bishopville immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to the Bishopville Rescue Squad. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

MARILYN H. SEELEY
SUMMERTON — Marilyn Ann Hovey Seeley, 72, wife of Paul T. Seeley, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at her home in Summerton. Born Sept. 7, 1929, in Ithaca, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Claude and Anna Vesely Hovey. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church. She was formerly an executive secretary at Ithaca College and then helped to run a family construction business for a number of years. Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include two sons, Donald Hunt of Summerton and Brion Hunt of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter, Nancy Kotmel of Ithaca; a stepson, James Seeley of Freeville, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Ronda Foley of Freeville; a brother, Bob Hovey of Hollywood, Fla.; a number of grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and a number of stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wagner Funeral Home in Ithaca. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Ithaca. A local memorial service will be held at a later date at Summerton United Methodist Church. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ALVA D. VAUGHN
Alva Delray Vaughn of 1015 Dibert St. died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at his home in Sumter. Born Jan. 16, 1961, in Sumter County, he was a son of Christine Peterson Vaughn and the late Marion Vaughn Jr. He was a 1979 graduate of Sumter High School. In his youth, he attended First Baptist Church and then later attended St. James United Methodist Church. After graduation, he was employed by Crescent Tool Co. and was a disc jockey for radio personality “Barbara T.” He was later employed by Korn Industries, where he retired after 15 years of employment. Survivors besides his mother of Sumter include a son, Alva Ray Vaughn of Sumter; two daughters, Stephanie Renee Vaughn and Brandi Lynn Vaughn, both of Eutawville; a brother, Allen “Kenny” Vaughn of Chicago, Ill.; four sisters, Cynthia Vaughn, Pamela Little and Tonya Singleton, all of Sumter, and Ingrid V. Richburg of Atlanta, Ga.; a grandmother, Dora Peterson of Newark, N.J.; an uncle, Jerry Peterson of Sumter; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Reid Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Eliza E. Black, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. W.S. Randolph and Minister Randolph Black. Burial will be in Dicks Cemetery. A public viewing will be held after 10 a.m. Wednesday. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday until the hour of service. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JULIOUS A. WASHINGTON
ALCOLU — Julious Allen Washington, 62, of 8461 Plowden Mill Road, widower of Juanita China Washington, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 15, 1939, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late George Allen Washington and Loubertha Ceasar Washington. He was a graduate of Manning Training High School. He was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church USA. Survivors include four brothers, Lester Washington of Miami, Fla., Andrella Washington of San Diego, Calif., Robert Washington of Sarasota, Fla., and George L. Washington of the home; two sisters, Camilla Washington of Sumter and Julia C. Burrell of Bronx, N.Y.; and a niece who was raised as a sister, Bobbie Ceasar of the home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Westminister Presbyterian Church USA, 1645 Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu, with the Rev. William Jones Jr., pastor, and the Rev. Jonathan Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Francis Cemetery, Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Camilla Washington, 43-B Miller Road, Sumter. Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

CURTIS PRINCE
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Curtis Prince, 53, husband of Renee Prince, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Coney Island Hospital. Born March 20, 1948, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Emma Burgess Prince and the late Sheldon Prince. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

BETTY N. STRANGE
Betty N. Strange, wife of James R. “Jim” Strange, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Mariner Health of Sumter East. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her son, Kevin Strange, 3477 Cornfield Drive. Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

MILDRED WHITNER
Mildred Whitner died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, in Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Jashmin Whack, 5639 Kingstree Highway, Manning. Services will be announced by Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning.

MILTON L. WILDER
PINEWOOD — Milton Levern Wilder, 52, husband of Mae Frances McFadden Wilder, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born March 22, 1949, in Florence County, he was a son of Pinckney and Louise Adger Wilder. The family will receive friends at the home, 14231 Panola Road, Pinewood, and at the home of his parents, 1143 Coard Road, Panola community, Pinewood. Services will be announced by Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton.

PATSY M. ADAMS
MANCHESTER, N.H. — Patsy Martin Adams, 65, wife of Marcel C. Adams, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at her home in Manchester after an extended illness. Born May 18, 1936, in Sumter, she was a daughter of John Patrick Martin and Mary Fuller Martin. She graduated from Edmond’s High School in Sumter and attended Furman University in Greenville. She lived in Wiesbaden, Germany; Biloxi, Miss.; Syracuse, N.Y.; Independence, Mo.; and had been a resident of Manchester for 33 years. She was employed by Goodbody and Company, was a restaurant owner, and retired as a manager at Credit Bureau Services of N.H. Survivors besides her husband of nearly 43 years include three sons, Alexander M. Adams and Boyce M. Adams, both of Manchester, and Chris M. Adams of Rochester, N.H.; a grandson, Maro P. Adams of Rochester; a granddaughter, Teagan L. Adams of Rochester; two brothers, Edward M. Martin of Camden, S.C., and Charles Robert Martin of Lugoff, S.C.; and two sisters, Lela J. Wiggin of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Mary M. Krumpotich of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret M. Broadway; and a number of nephews, nieces and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Kirk Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Home, Health, and Hospice Care, 22 Prospect St., Nashua, NH 03060. CHRISTINE D. COKER
CEDARTOWN, Ga. — Christine D. Coker, 84, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at her home in Cedartown. Born in Carroll County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late John Wesley Daniel and Marion Florida Daniel. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Cedartown. She was first married to the late Milton C. Ball; she was later married to the late W.B. “Bill” Coker. Survivors include two daughters, Diane Moates of Cedartown and Jane B. Odom of Sumter; a brother, J.W. “Dub” Daniel; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m Thursday at First Baptist Church in Cedartown with Dr. David Taylor and the Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating. Burial will be in Northview Cemetery. Gammage Funeral Home of Cedartown is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES COOVER JR.
Charles Coover Jr., 85, widower of Georgia Roberts Coover, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Covenant Place. Born in Chambersburg, Pa., he was a son of the late Charles Coover and Grace Wingert Coover. He was a retired self-employed insurance agent. Survivors include a brother, Robert Coover of San Jose, Calif. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating. Memorials may be made to Salvation Army of Sumter, P.O. Box 2229, Sumter, SC 29151. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

FLORENCE — Fred Graham, 58, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born Sept. 7, 1942, in Olanta, he was a son of the late Sam and Elveta Frierson Graham. He attended Olanta public schools. Survivors include three daughters, Antoinette McFadden and her husband, the Rev. Tracy McFadden, and Danette McGill, all of Florence, and Dr. Nanette Graham of Hampton, Va.; two brothers, Roosevelt Graham and his wife, Veronica, of Norfolk, Va., and Curtis Graham and his wife, Gloria, of Charlotte, N.C.; four sisters, Estelle Brand and her husband, Larry, and Letha Harrison, all of Turbeville, Oretha McElveen and her husband, Sammy, of Norfolk, and Elther L. Fulmore and her husband, Stanley, of Olanta; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Troy Graham. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Jordan Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Olanta with the Rev. K.L. Gibson officiating. Burial will be in Byrd Cemetery in Scranton. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday. The funeral procession will leave at 1:45 p.m. from the home of his daughter, Antoinette McFadden, 701 E. Sam Harrell Road, Florence. The family will receive friends at the home of Antoinette McFadden. Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of arrangements.
